apartment complex in south san jose this morning looking into an overnight shooting and the e detectives still looking for the gunman. this is happening on snow drive and branham lane and highway 101. the crime scene tape still up this hour, bob. >> it is. but looks like it is coming down soon. good morning to you, scott. police have had a wrecker come out here and removing the silver lexus and the man in the jacket walking towards the camera. that lexus somehow is connected to this shooting. police won't say how it's not clear if that belongs to the suspect. if that belongs to the victim. as you mentioned, there is no arrests as of yet, but a man who was shot. a man in his 30s and he's in the hospital and serious but stable condition after he was shot about two, three hours ago outside that small apartment complex out here on snow drive. >> and then like who is that? is that really, real shots? yeah, they were.

>> that's what one man awoke to, that's what one man awoke to at 3:00 this morning. several gunshots. when police arrived they found this man bleeding from one gunshot wound and he was conscious and talking and anything to help them find the person who shot him. they are at the hospital keeping an eye on his condition. he's stable, but his condition is serious. not clear what led up to this shooting, but a man who lives a few doors down, the one we just heard from, he tells us that his neighborhood has gotten rougher over time in his opinion. >> i told my brother that i would really like to move out. you know what i mean? just getting nasty here sometimes. >> you had this conversation before the shooting? >> oh, yeah, just friday, just last friday. talked to my brother, yeah, we better move. >> as far as the investigation goes, as i mentioned police are getting ready to remove that silver lexus that was parked in the middle of snow drive with

the driver's side door open and also searching in front of this small apartment complex. and in front of a house that's next door. not clear what evidence they are gathering out here. they have spoken to people out here and from those interviews, they have not intdicated whethe or not they have a better idea who committed this shooting. they do know who the man is in the hospital, but, again, as i mentioned they were first talking when they found him out here. reporting live here in south san jose, bob redell. more breaking news now in san jose. crews put out a fire at a commercial building in north san jose this morning. someone reported seeing smoke called 911 and crews arrived and called for backup once but did contain the flames within an hour. the building is on old bayshore highway right where 880 and highway 101 intersect.

it is possible someone was living inside that building when that fire started. new video this morning, damage left behind by a group of vandals flipping over smart cars. >> "today in the bay" christie smith is live in san francisco where police are trying to figure out why people would do this. so sad to see them tipped over on their sides. >> good morning to you. we've been looking at this video this morning and it is an odd sight. three smart cars tipped over in different position, but, of course, also vandalism against someone's property. san francisco police got a call at about 1:00 this morning about a group of people tipping a car over and running. that smart car was left tipped up on its rear near interstate 280 and on anderson street, another one tipped on its side in the street. we went back this morning just a short time ago, though, and the cars were gone. so, possibly the owners are aware of what happened. but 1:00 this morning, one man tells us he was surprised to see

people going after a tiny car as he stepped out to have a smoke. >> all of a sudden, i see eight hooded figures just walk out from the corner over here and walk up to the car. i thought they looked like they were up to no good and then, sure enough, they walk up to this smart car right here all huddled around it and then just lift it up and set it on its hind legs. >> now, a third smart car was tipped up on its roof on anderson street, too. i checked the website and one of the models listed $13,000. certainly not amusing to the people who own them. but this apparently isn't new. on that website there is a forum by owners with conversations about what can be done to stop smart car tipping. reporting live in san francisco, christie smith, "today in the bay." >> before you go, do you or the

neighbors have a sense that maybe this is a tech protest sort of thing, we've seen that, or just a bunch of eight guys that maybe left the bar and saw a smart car or several smart cars? >> well,ia kno iyou know, it's say. that's something we considered. when we were driving around we saw a number of other smart cars. some of them that were convertib convertibles and they weren't tipped over, just parked there. hard to say exactly what these people's intention was. >> what in the world they were thinking. >> make a whole lot of sense. thank you, christie. also new this morning olympian oscar pistorius took the stand at his own murder trial. pistorius started his testimony by apologizing to the family of his girlfriend, reeva steenkamp. >> i would love to apology. there hasn't been a moment since this tragedy happened that i haven't thought about your family. >> cameras were not allowed to

show pistorius' face as he testified in front of steenkamp's family. pistorius said he wanted to protect her and he killed her by mistake, thinking she was an intruder. prosecutors say he killed her after an argument. happening now, crews are honing in on a promising lead for the missing malaysia airline plane. several ships have picked up pings in the water from the indian ocean, however that part of the ocean is, of course, very deep. and time is running out. those pings could stop at any moment. however, search officials are calling this the most promising lead and best information yet. tomorrow marks one full month since malaysian airlines flight 370 just vanished with 239 people onboard. 6:07 right now. let's check your forecast and give you a live look at the sunrise. my goodness, anything else we should do today but just stare at that? >> hard to get up in the morning, but that is your payoff. >> living on one of the greatest

places on urthearth. >> it is beautiful. >> i'm waiting for you two to break out "take my breath away." 54 to start the day. it is really nice out there at half moon bay. even at the coast this morning, we are waking up with some comfortable temperatures. i want to take you through your day, hour by hour. right now 54 degrees by lunchtime. in san jose it was 80 degrees and by 4:00, once that sun starts to set, still mild out there at 82 degrees. so, definitely warm day. this is oakland for today. 72 degrees right at room temperature. at lunchtime, you'll round out the day at about 77 degrees in oak town, so, it's going to be warm out there, but, hey, feeling like baseball weather, which is great news because the giants home opener is tomorrow. i'll show you that forecast in just a minute. for today 84 degrees in the south bay and 83 can degrees along the peninsula and 75 degrees in beautiful san francisco. one of those day physical you can get outside and have those lunch plans so nice out there on the water in san francisco. 84 degrees in the tri valley a

little warm out there. 79 degrees for the east bay and wine country is at straight up 83 degrees. warm day. by 10 to 15 degrees above average, matter of fact. this is what we're expecting for tomorrow. 75 degrees and the boys are back in town, and hey, we're going it be out there live tomorrow morning. lots of fun to be had right here on "today in the bay." make sure you wake up with us tomorrow, you don't want to miss it. let's check out your drive. >> with that beautiful forecast for today, we're looking at probably a loose interpretation of lunch hour. over here the bay bridge. a rush hour. that's starting to build as beautiful sunrise comes up behind these cars. headlights lighting it up. bay bridge toll plaza metering lights turned on just before 6:00. a little slowing down the east shore freeway and not so bad on the rest of your approaches including the maze and 580 through oakland. more slowing 580 westbound and this is more traffic than we saw last week through the tri valley and those schools were off and a lot of parents coming back from

family vacs. if you're lucky enough to do that, a little more traffic, not a dramatic slow down. 101 in san jose just north of 80, your typical pattern here. 101 through the peninsula, this is a lighter volume of traffic from here and in san francisco. on the other side coming into san francisco, peggy, a warning for folks coming across the golden gate bridge. starting today, commuters crossing the golden gate will pay $1 more. drivers with fastrak will be charged $6 without and $7 without. reaching $8 by 2015. that increase is to prevent a $142 million budget shortfall. time now 6:10. still ahead, prince george reports for royal duty at just eight months old. coming up, all that new video of the arrival in new zealand. we'll tell you why he's stirring up some controversy, as well. >> look at kate bringing back

lots to go over for your various microclimates in moments. as we focus on your microcommutes. the different areas of the bay showing a different pattern. 580 here through dublin and more traffic than we saw last week and south bay looking good northbound 101 right here on this camera. explain the differences in the flow this week as well as the tri valley coming up. here are today's top stories. police are trying to figure out who vandalized smart cars. one was even lifted on its back end. a witness at one of the scenes said he saw a group of eight people walk up and lift the car. olympian oscar pistorius took the stand at his own murder trial this morning. pistorius started his testimony by apologizing to the family of his girlfriend, reeva steenkamp. during his testimony, pistorius said he wanted to protect steenkamp and killed her by mistake thinking she was an

intruder. prosecutors said he killed her after an argument. chuck hagel is in china for a landmark visit. go for china's first aircraft carrier. urging china to be more transparent about its expanding military. new this morning, prince jor george and his parents are kicking off their tour of new zealand. the family got off the plane in wellington. prince william and the duchess handed the baby off to helpers why they said hello to the crowd. >> he is awfully cute, isn't he? not without controversy. some people are protesting the car seat that the little boy will be using. new zealand national child care agency released this picture showing the official car seat, as you can see, it's facing front. protesters say it should be a rear facing car seat until little george turns 2. the seat was chosen by the royal family and not its own staff and the age limit is a

recommendation and not actually the law. >> i think they're right. you should be rear facing seat, much smaller, too. >> unless your child is like mine and grew very quickly and you flip it around a little earlier. depends on your child. >> keep the future king of england safe. checking in, also, getting a look at that forecast. what a beautiful weekend we had. >> a lot of kids headed back from spring break this week. count on heavier than normal traffic from what we have been dealing with the last couple weeks. it appears to be the case, though, based on all the cameras i looked at. thanks for joining us this morning. if you can peek your head out right now, it is so spectacular out there. temperatures are comfortable and we have such a pretty sunrise over the greater bay area. head throughout the day today, oakland is at 72 degrees by lunchtime and 77 degrees by 4:00 p.m. and then highs today, especially in the city by the bay and around the inner bay are going to end up in the 70s and 80s. 84 degrees today in the south bay. little bit warmer than average

and that will be the case as we head throughout most of this week and then by the end of the week, you'll notice here on your five-day forecast, more changes coming our way and a little bit of rain expected, mostly to the north of golden gate bridge and 75 degrees here by friday in the south bay. let's check your drive, here's mike. >> bay bridge toll plaza wanting to stay clear. subtle difference in the patterns and you see these lanes right here, these lanes off to your left as you approach between the car pool lanes and fastrak lanes are starting to back off. the lights were turned on and those are the ones that still hold the volume and that's typical of a little later in the commute, again, a little lighter volume seems to be the pattern. the map will show you how things are shaping up around the bay as you're coming towards the area and no major problems at the east shore freeway and the maze moving smoothly and we'll zoom into a couple spots where you see oranges and reds and 84

westbound coming down through livermore and over here at the dublin interchange and seeing more slowing develop, once again, and the volume starting to cause speeds dipping down to 60, maybe 55 at their very worst down past and nothing dramatic. but heavier than last week because the tri valley schools are back this week. that means the parents and commuters are back, as well. tri valley and you are seeing slowing for north 238 and volume builds for southbound 580. d dumbarton bridge. this is a dramatic change. we have been telling you about that because of the new apple campus and you'll see traffic disrupted and maybe folks taking that route a little slower and towards wolf and that is circuit there and adjusting over the next week or so. just a note for south bay drivers. but the rest of your south bay, freeways move slowly.

some south bay school districts have the week off. i think the mountain view, some of those schools are off and you'll see a change to the flow in this area, as well. north bay southbound 101 and no major issues traveling through san rafael and a little slowing here as volume builds and in towards theiv central area. reports of a fender bender and watch the transition route, but sounds like the lanes should be completely clear in a few minutes. back to you, peggy. general motors dealers will begin repairs on the faulty ignition switches. more than 2 million cars are expected to be repaired over the next six months. the switches can be bumped and cars can switch off which disables power steering and braking. now, the repairs are free and they take about half an hour, if you need to take yours in. yahoo! may be looking to latch on to the success netflix

distance after a very nice weekend. >> let's take another look over the bay bridge toll plaza as well as traffic begins to build. we'll check in with mike coming up in just a minute. the search for a missing hiker has been called off. more than 100 people and canine units scoured mt. tam park looking for any sign of magdalena glinkowski. no one has seen her since march 30th. this is her buying a parking perm permit. on friday rangers found her i.d., credit cards inside her rental car that was parked in the parking lot. >> as of right now we're still back with the vehicle at a parking lot and a description of a woman. besides that, we don't have much else. >> they say that glinkowski is fairly new to the bay area and her family is expected to fly in from baltimore this week. a spring break party turned

to chaos near the uc santa barbara campus. police say 15,000 people crowded into several blocks for the unsanctioned deltopia party. now, police used flash grenades, tear gas and rubber bullets after one officer was hit in the head with a backpack filled with bottles. another officer was hit in the face with a brick. >> there were so many, things on fire, everyone's screaming. all of a sudden and there were people down the street. >> investigators say they are hoping new surveillance cameras installed in the area will help them track down suspects who are still on the loose. some students taking to social media to blame out of towners for the violence. >> saying it was not them. in this case, we know who was involved in this brawl. this on long island where a

charity hockey game turned into an all-out brawl. if you are wondering why someone didn't call the cops, they were the cops down there on the ice. annual police versus firefighters hockey game. with the score tied up at 3-3. the gloves came off. no pun intended here. officials had trouble figuring out the penalties, you could see why. not that it matters, but the police department went on to win the game, 8-5 -- >> everybody lost there. >> usually you expect them to sort of, you know, hold themselves to higher standard there. >> especially for kids watching, as well. well, just in from new york, barbara walters has announced she will retire next year. she'll make the official announcement today on "the view." make her final appearance may 16th. her final show part of the day-long retirement celebration that will include abc news naming its new york headquarters after her. that's great. the 83-year-old said she will remain involved behind the scenes as an executive producer of the talk show and she'll make

we'll see how it is affecting your monday morning commute. a live look at the opening bell on wall street and the new york stock exchange. kind of a lousy market as we get started this morning. e-trade over on the nasdaq and kn jobs on friday could be a slow start today. today is monday, april 7th, this is "today in the bay." fri'm scott mcgrew. >> i'm peggy bunker, laura is off today. an update on several breaking stories from overnight. police are investigating an early morning shooting in south san jose where a man in his 30s was shot once. he was rushed to the hospital in serious condition. police do not have any suspects at this time. crews have put out a fire at a commercial building in north san jose this morning. someone reported seeing smoke on old bayshore highway.

crews called for backup once, but contained the flames within the hour. police are trying to figure out who vandalized several smar cars in san francisco overnight. one car flipped on its roof and one on its side and the other on it back end. a witness to one of the scenes said he saw a group of eight people walk up to one of these smart cars and pick it up. overseas now where malaysian transport minister is calling it the most promising lead in the search for the missing malaysian airline jet. several ships are reporting pings from underwater. >> time is definitely the big concern right now, scott. because we are over the 30 days when the batteries in those flight data recorders and the cockpit voice recorders are going to send out that pinging signal. so, if the signal stops, they will have no clue where to look. take a look at the map.

this is where they're looking right now. 1,000 miles, just over 1,000 miles off the coast of perth, australia, and northwest. little bit different area than they were initially searching in when they first decided that the indian ocean the most likely spot that this plane went down. now, the australians overnight, the malaysians all saying that while this is promising, they're very cautious. they've got some specialized equipment onboard from the u.s. navy that can detect this pinging and over the weekend they heard it for two hours. then they lost it. then they heard two distinct pinging noises for 13 minutes. that could indicate the two black boxes, but, again, they have to go back out now and locate the source of that and then try to send the vehicle down underwater to locate the wreckage. this is far from confirmed, but it is the best information that they have so far trying to find that plane. scott? >> little bit of good news, tracie potts, thank you. 6:32.

traffic near the site of apple's campus is getting worse. let's take a look outside right now. looking into the actual construction site in cupertino. starting today, a stretch of pruneridge will be closed permanently to traffic between wolf road and tantal avenue. so, it's already really heavily traffic area and you can expect that to be pretty tough there during the construction. all right. checking the forecast, give you a live look at san jose and san francisco. isn't that pretty? both of them, really. let's check in with christina. >> they are lovely. you know, one of those mornings, we are getting a gorgeous sunrise everywhere across the bay area. thanks for joining us. i know monday is not always the easiest day of the week, but, you know what, the weather is on our side. it's going to be nice out there just for walking the dog and any sort of activities you have to

do outdoors before heading out and about for work today. this is what we are expecting at lunchtime in the city by the bay, typically, we could see some really thick fog at this time of the year, but, no, clear out there all day and as a result we'll hit 70 at noon and the high today for san francisco is comfortable, 10 to 15 degrees above average for this time of year at 75 degrees. 83 from the peninsula and 84 in the south bay and today nice and warm with the building breeze later on this afternoon. so, if you want to open up the windows and don't want to use that ac you will be able to get some movement in your house with that wind picking up later today. 79 degrees and clear skies out in the east bay today and 84 degrees for the tri valley. any giants fans out there? we sure are. here nbc bay area. first pitch tomorrow 1:35, 75 degrees. fantastic baseball weather. we will be out there live tomorrow morning and it is going to be a good time.

that's all i can tell you, we'll have to meet back here and you have to see for yourself. here's mike inouye and your morning drive. >> over here by the oakland coliseum, as well. traffic flow is very nicely and we have an early strong start for the commute. i'll show you the map. bay bridge toll plaza and metering lights were turned on just before 6:00 and hefty back up but starting to back off a little bit. the slowest drives for the bay right now. nothing really unusual and slower drive for 580 westbound is starting to pick up and the volume builds now and this is heavier volume and more slowing than we saw last week. they're back in session this week in tri valley. southbound 880 all showing a slower drive, as well. as volume continues to build and fremont at stevenson boulevard a crash reported and should move quickly to the shoulder but that is going on and causing some distractions down towards milpitas and rest of your south

and welcome back. taking a really beautiful look here at alcatraz. nice shot there. you can see really beautiful clear skies, too, today. amazing new video just released by nasa showing a solar flare. nasa says solar flares powerful bursts of radiation can disturb the layer of atmosphere where gps and communication signals travel. to to that, though, it would have to be more powerful than the one you're seeing here. but, remember the scale on this. that thing is enormous. >> just remarkable to see that. beautiful pictures. birmingham, alabama, getting heavy rainfall this morning. the rains fell too fast for

some. as you can see these vehicles here stalled out after trying to get through some of that high water. officers put barricades out overnight to try to keep the drivers from traveling on flooded streets. the heavy rainfall was even a bigger nightmare for some. earlier this morning look at this suv here overturned and no injuries there were reported. in massachusetts, a massive fire erupted moments after a couple say, i do. >> this is a bad omen. check out this video here showing the entire wedding venue in flames. the justice of the peace says he had just pronounced the couple husband and wife and the wedding party was walking down the aisle when they spotted the flames. all 150 guests including the wedding party did get out safely. firefighters say a cigarette tossed into mulch sparked the flames. the venue did not have sprinklers so they had to use water from a nearby pond to put out the blaze. >> they are not getting their deposit back. coming up, we're live with

as we get the building breeze and good air quality. let that air into your home. that will cool you off. 83 degrees and warm sunshine for today in the north bay and going to be warm just about all week long. see here for the next five days long from san jose and san francisco. you'll notice we'll cool you off towards the end of the week as we bring in some showers. looks like the best chance in san francisco and a cutoff low and i'm watching it closely. i'll let you know if that changes as we head through the next couple days. it's monday, mike, what are we working with? >> working with a different flow than last week and adjusting over the next month because of spring breaks. the peninsula is not a problem. showing red and orange in the east bay and zoom into that in a second. south bay shows a build for north 87 than we saw last week and the school districts that are off and the san jose schools are still on and a different flow of traffic. we're now seeing northbound slow down from 101, as well. we had that closure and crash at oakland road and caused the

closure of one lane. over here we have the closure for primridge avenue as they're expanding the apple campus. that closes today forever and that will change the flow of traffic and folks will have to adjust and watch the businesses on wolf are still open. the food and coffee over there, i'm being redundant. the slow down for 880. slower drive towards stevenson avenue and activity in the middle of the roadway that moved to the shoulder but the distraction and the build for traffic at the same time causes that slow down south of the dumbarton bridge. meanwhile, your typical pattern down towards the san mateo bridge continues for 880 and 238. westbound 580 continues a bit of a build and speeds come down 45 or 50 down through pleasanton and nothing really unexpected for this pattern, just heavier than it was last week. approach to the bay bridge. the orange zono lane there for

the east shore freeway and nearly a stall westbound at powell didn't help things and that's clear now and a slower drive towards berkeley and the berkeley curve. all lanes are filled. we had these lanes off to the left and starting to ease off a bit, but filling in, once again, a slower drive off the berkeley curve continues. back to you. >> mike, thank you much. breaking news for you. investigators outside an apartment complex in south san jose this morning looking into an overnight shooting. detectives still looking for the gunman. this is happening on snow drive near branham lane and highway 101. bob redell joins us live where crime scene tape still up at this hour. good morning, bob. >> where it's been for about four hours. good morning, scott. no arrests as of yet. one man in his 30s and he is the victim and he is in the hospital after getting shot in serious, but stable condition. he was shot about four hours ago outside that small apartment complex there on snow drive.

>> and then like, who is that? is that really, real shots? yeah, they were. >> that's what one man awoke to around 3:00 this morning. several gunshots. when police arrived they found a man bleeding from at least one wound and he was conscious and not talking and they are with him at the hospital. they have been keeping an eye on his condition. again, he is stable, but the condition is serious. not clear what led up to this shooting, but a man who lives a few doors down with his family tells us this neighborhood has gotten rougher, in his opinion. >> i was just talking to my brother that i would really like to move out. just kind of getting nasty here sometimes. >> you had this conversation before the shooting? >> oh, yeah. just friday, just last friday. talked to my brother, yeah, we better move. >> you could come back out here live, you could see officers with san jose police are outside this garage.

it's in a single family home next door to that apartment complex. it appears the shootings took place somewhere in that area either in front of the complex or the garage, that's where a lot of the investigation has been focused over the last four hours. if you look to the left in the middle of snow drive, we thought it was a silver but now looks like it is a gold lexus. the driver's side door had been open and looks like police will be taking that away, as well. not clear if that belonged to the victim, the suspect or someone else. again, one man shot in his 30s. serious, but stable condition. not clear what led up to the shooting. police are still looking for the person who put him in the hospital. reporting live in south san jose, bob redell, "today in the bay." more breaking news, crews put out a fire at a commercial building in north san jose this morning. broke out nearly four hours ago. someone reported seeing smoke, called 911. crews had to call for backup once, but contained the flames within an hour. the building is on old bay shore

highway right near where highway 101 and interstate 880 meet. firefighters say it's possible someone was living inside that building when the fire started. new video this morning showing the damage left behind by a group of vandals after they flipped over several smart cars on their roofs. sides and even on their backs. >> christie smith live in san francisco where police are trying to figure out who did this and more importantly, christie, why? >> that's the question we have been asking ourselves all morning. why would someone do this? is it someone on spring break or someone who thought it was funny or a message or upset? hard to say. it is certainly an odd sight to see three smart cars tipped over. it happened overnight one of them on its roof here in san francisco. another one perched back on its rear on sweeney street near interstate 280. san francisco police are telling us they got a call about 1:00 this morning that a group of people had tipped over one of the 1,800 pound tiny cars.

at his own murder trial. pistorius started his testimony by apologizing to the family of his girlfriend, reeva steenkamp. >> i wake up every morning and you're the first people i think of, the first people i pray for. i can't imagine the pain and sorrows i have caused you and your family. >> cameras were not allowed to show pistorius' face as he testified. during his testimony he said he wanted to protect her and killed her by mistake thinking she was an intruder. prosecutors say he killed her after an argument. happening now, crews are honing in on a promising lead for the missing malaysia airline plane. several ships have picked up pings from the walter in the southern indian ocean. that part of the ocean very deep time is running out. those pings can stop at any moment because the batteries on the black boxes are expected to exhaust themselves soon. tomorrow marks one month since malaysia airlines flight 370

disappeared with 239 people onboard. a family and baby girl rescued at sea could be home as early as today. video of yesterday's dramatic rescue shows deploying into the ocean where the family's sail boat lost steering and communications. 1-year-old baby, lira is now in stable condition after receiving immediate medical care for a severe fever and a rash. the parents took off on an around the world journey brin g bringing her and her 3-year-old sister along. the baby became very sick. lots of people, including some of their own family members, feel that that journey was far too risky for children while others disagree. >> he is a former navy corpsman and a certified coast guard captain. this is something they were preparing for for years. >> sailors sunk that family boat
