7:00 am
have a great day. >> announcer: this is an nbc news special report. good morning. i'm matt lauer along with savannah guthrie. 7:00 on the east coast. we have breaking news. we have our national correspondent kate snow. we understand this was a student that they believe perpetrated this act. >> they said the student is in custody now.
7:01 am
we just heard the student may have been a sophomore at the school. everything is very initial right now, savannah, we don't have a lot of details. we know up to 20 people may have been injured, potentially stabbed. some of them may have been in a stampe stampede. one student just told nbc news that students were running and streaming and rushing out of the building. some people might have been caught in the scuffle. the initial report was a student had come in and gone room-to-room and classroom-to-classroom and stabbing people with injuries. school was in session at 7:00 or 7:30 and it lasted for up to 20 minutes. >> you talk about some of the injuries being cuts and bruises which was a chaotic situation. 20 minutes, someone room-to-room with a knife. that's a very long time. the call came in at 7:13. requesting medical an siessistat the school. several people have been taken to various hospitalized.
7:02 am
some air lifted away to the school. >> many of the injuries are not superficial. they are life threatening. four hospitals receiving victims here. some of the victims actually had to be air lifted from the scene. >> we know of four people that had to be air lifted from the scene. as you say, seven victims, we're told in life-threatening situations. >> in this area, they shutdown the elementary school. they are using it for some kind of staging area because as you can imagine, now we have parents, frantically coming to the school, wanting to see if their children are okay. >> they are actually asking parents not to come to the school at the moment because they don't want anymore traffic at the school than necessary. they want to keep the roads and the parking lot areas around the school free for emergency responders. >> the school web site states a critical incident happened at the school. additional information will be
7:03 am
released as soon as possible. keep our campus clear of traffic. >> up to 20 students have been wounded in a mass stabbing incident at a pittsburgh area high school. we know several of the injuries appear to be severe. as you mentioned, not superficial. we know a student, allegedly a student, is in custody and now being questioned by police. >> this has been an nbc news special report. some of you will return to the "today" show. we have more coverage on nbcnews.com. we're back at 7:03 on the west coast. we will have more on the stabbing in pittsburgh as the information is available. we have breaking news as well in the search for malaysia air flight 370. two signals picked up overnight
7:04 am
in the indian ocean. nbc's tom costello has latest for us. >> savannah, good morning. this was the australia team which heard the pings here. that was the same area where they heard them over the weekend. one ping for five minutes and one for seven minutes. and this part is important as well. it was picked up by the australian ship, the "ocean shield," and the "ocean shield" is pulling this pinger locator two miles beneath the surface of the ocean. however, the signals were weaker than expected. that might suggest the batteries are starting to die. this morning, new clues in the 33-day hunt for flight 370. >> "ocean shield" has been able to reacquire the signals on two more occasions. >> overnight, australian search coordinators announced their ship "ocean shield," equipped with the u.s. navy's towed pinger locator, or tpl, picked up two more underwater pings like this on tuesday. after detecting two initial pings over the weekend. commanders say they're now
7:05 am
confident the signals came from a man-made device. >> it's consistent with a locator on a black box, so that's why we are more confident than we were before. but, we've got to lay eyes on it. >> to do that, they'll need to detect more pings to narrow the search area. a challenging task with the pinger batteries fading fast. only then can they map the ocean floor and hunt for wreckage. >> the better "ocean shield" can define the area, the easier it will be for the autonomous underwater vehicle to subsequently search for aircraft wreckage. >> this is one of the most remote areas of the indian ocean, and at 15,000 feet, the ocean depth is a huge challenge. the empire state building stands 1,250 feet tall. the maximum known depth a sperm whale can dive, 3,200 feet.
7:06 am
the "titanic" was found at 12,5000 feet of water. they found air france 447 13,000 feet down. if it's there, flight 370 could be 15,000 feet below the ocean surface, nearly three miles down. meanwhile, the search for debris continues on the ocean surface and in the air, but more than a month after flight 370 disappeared. still not a single piece of wreckage. >> the longer this goes, the harder it gets, but we've already eliminated a lot of the area and we're continuing to search area as we're assigned every day. >> the underwater terrain is called broken ridge. the depth of the water is one to four miles down. it is so remote, they have done very little charting in this area. the trouble is it's never been thoroughly charted because it's so remote. because it's so remote and because it's so dark, the experts say it could take a week
7:07 am
to three weeks. savannah, back to you. >> all right, tom. thank you so much. let's turn to bob hager, he covered aviation for nbc for 20 years. if they have four different instances of ping sounds, why isn't that sufficient right now to put that bluefin-21 under the water and start mapping this location? >> well, once you start mapping, it takes so long, so you've got to really narrow that search down. so if they've got four, they'd just like to get a lot more so they can get the area smaller and smaller and smaller where they have to map with the sonar. >> because they're definitely running up against borrowed time here. we've passed the 30 days that the pinger must be able to make sounds, so the sounds are getting fainter. if they never get another ping again and this is the search area, do you think it's doable to find the black box? >> i do. i think they've got enough now that they will find it, it will just take more time. but i think now they'll find it eventually. i didn't always think that. but with all these pings that they got so far, i mean, they're in the area. they'll get it -- it may take a lot of time, but they'll get it. >> you may have answered my last question, but how confident are you now, the fact that we've heard four distinct pings.
7:08 am
does that make you feel fairly confident that we may be able to find the black box? >> i think -- there was a time when we never know what caused this, but i do believe that they're going to get these boxes. then there's the question, will they tell you what happened? but they might. >> some painstaking work ahead. bob hager, thank you so much. over to matt. savannah, thank you. now to the murder trial of oscar pistorius. prosecutors are getting their first chance to question the olympic sprinter on this, his third day on the witness stand. "today's" national investigative correspondent jeff rossen has covered this trial every step of the way. jeff, good morning to you. >> reporter: hey, matt, good morning to you. this is the most powerful day in court yet. perhaps the biggest yet. as emotion and fireworks rain, oscar pistorius once again breaking down on the stand this morning. he told the court how he thought he had an intruder in the house, grabbed his gun, and in his words, "before i knew it i fired four shots." today he revealed reeva steenkamp, his girlfriend, was still breathing when he found her in the bathroom. he carried her downstairs, she
7:09 am
died in his arms. just a short time ago, moments prosecutors came out swinging. listen to this. >> my lady, i've made a terrible mistake. >> you made a mistake? >> that's correct. >> you killed a person. that's what you did, isn't it? >> i made a mistake. >> you killed reeva steenkamp, that's what you did. >> i made a mistake, my lady. >> you repeated it three times. what was your mistake? >> my mistake was that i took reeva's life, my lady. >> you killed her. you shot and killed her. won't you take responsibility for that? >> i did, my lady. >> then say it then. say yes. i shot and killed reeva steenkamp. >> reporter: at one point today, the prosecutor actually showed a very graphic photo of reeva's head after the shooting. pistorius sobbed and through those tears, he basically screamed at the prosecutor, why are you showing me that? why are you making me relive the
7:10 am
torment of that night? he says, i was there. pistorius got so emotional, they will have more on it throughout the day. >> all right, jeff rossen in pretoria. jeff, thanks very much. we're going to have more on today's developments in this emotionally charged case coming up. meantime, natalie is here and you've got new developments on this frightening series of highway shootings. >> really scary news out of kansas city. police are looking for a suspect or suspects who are linked to a number of shootings on highways in the area. nbc's john yang is in kansas city with more for us. good morning, john. >> reporter: good morning, natalie. a lot of anxious drivers here in kansas city. drivers tense in this area, this is what they call the grandview triangle here in kansas city. three interstates of big state highway all come together here. and this is also where about half of the incidents took place. >> a foot higher, it goes right through the window. >> reporter: a manhunt is escalating this morning for the suspect in a number of shootings along kansas city area highways. police announced tuesday that there's a connection among some
7:11 am
of the 14 incidents that have taken place over the past month, but have not said what those links are or how many of the shootings are related. >> that definitely seems like a high number to me and something that we obviously should be putting some resources towards to get that to stop. >> reporter: while nobody's been killed, three people have been injured and that number could be much worse. according to one police report, a victim discovered a large bullet hole on the left passenger door where her daughter was sitting. >> people have actually been struck by bullets. it's just a miracle that no one's been killed at this point. >> reporter: most of the eyewitness accounts point to a lone suspect firing from another car, possibly wearing a ski mask. while another report refers to a car full of suspects passing a semiautomatic pistol back and forth. and with the person firing that gun still on the loose, drivers in the kansas city area are eager for an arrest. >> you can hope and pray that they get something taken care of and puts this to an end.
7:12 am
>> reporter: all of these incidents have taken place between 5:30 and 9:00 at night, making the evening rush hour particularly intense. natalie. >> very scary there. john yang in kansas city, thank you. president obama and first lady michelle obama will travel to texas today to attend the memorial service for the victims of the ft. hood shootings. last wednesday, army specialist ivan lopez shot and killed three people before taking his own life. the president will make remarks at the service before moving on to houston where he will attend democratic party fundraisers tonight. a big shake up at the secretsecre secretsecrehe isecret service. several agents protecting president obama on the trip to amsterdam last month were sent home after a night of drinking. in florida, two staffers were
