trending cooler as we approach the weekend. a look at that, coming up. i don't mind that trend, rob. also trending more busy for the roadways. in fact an issue for 580 as you come out of the pass. we'll give you that coming up. we're so spoiled. when it's cool we like it hot and when it's hot we like it cool. this thursday, april 10th, this is "today in the bay." well, good morning, everyone. thank you for joining us, i'm scott mcgrew. >> i'm laura garcia-cannon. scouring the water off of ocean beach in hopes of finding an 8-year-old boy swept out to sea. christie smith just spoke with police with live details. >> one coast guard cutter is in the water looking for that 14-year-old boy and they've been out here all night and they tell

me they're looking between the golden gate bridge and just a little bit south of ocean beach that's because of a drift patterns, the movement of the water overnight. but, also, a 17-year-old teen surfer is being called a hero for helping two others out of the water. at 3:30 yesterday a man and his teen son and teen nephew were walking along ocean beach and a rip current suddenly dragged the two younger people into the water. the adult tried to run in and saved them, but quickly got into trouble, too. that's when 17-year-old surfer tony barbero helped. first, the older teen and then the father and then there was a third teen still out there. >> they were talking about a third person. the boy, i think, was in shock when i pulled him in. i took that to mean that his dad was the cousin because he just said the word cousin over and over. i didn't really understand him. i didn't see a third person.

>> now, the man needed cpr and was taken to ucsf after his pulse was brought back. temperatures, we're told, overnight in the water about 55 degrees, so certainly cold. it turns out that that surfer's dad is captain with the san francisco fire department and also firefighters here this morning tell me what they're doing is they're in touch with the coast guard and if they suddenly need help out there, they're ready to respond. if we can come back out here live in the distance, you can see sort of lights blinking out there and we talk about this thing going back and forth and this is the first time we've seen it this morning. the coast guard telling us as soon as it gets light they'll add more resources out here this morning. reporting live at ocean beach, christie smith. new details this morning out of pennsylvania about that mass stabbing at a high school near pittsburgh. about an hour ago, police said the scene was clear, but will

take some time to clean up. the school will not be open until monday at the earliest. police continue to interview witnesses and victims on campus yesterday morning. they say 16-year-old alex hribal went down the hall at franklin regional high school slashing his victims as he went. 21 people hurt, four of them in critical condition this morning. police will not comment on the motive, but there is speculation that bullying may have been involved. traffic back to normal on the bay bridge after a pothole caused a major mess last night. in fact, we have a live look at the bridge this morning. you can see traffic appears to be moving smoothly at a distance. three eastbound lanes and two westbound lanes shut down for several hours as crews repaired a large pothole. it happened right after the evening commute because the eastern span runs right under the western span. crew husband to close off three of the eastbound lanes while those repairs were going on. the fans leaving the giants game

were stuck in the backup for hours overnight. chp opened all lanes about 2:30 this morning. an alarming photograph of sfo is causing concern on capitol hill this morning. that's because the caption under the photograph encouraging people to take a bombs and take up arms. peggy bunker here this morning to explain. >> it is an alarming add promoting terrorism and bombmaking. we'll show you that add in a quick minute. the fbi does not believe there is any safety threat to the public or to those using sfo airport. when you see a pictuture like ts it is pretty unnerving to see part of the airport used in the backdrop of the ad. that is exactly what this is. take a look here, the ad is rather dark but the air train at sfo and the caption across the front of the air train photo reads, simply stand up and pack your tools of destruction and assemble your bomb and ready for detonation. pretty unnerving. it did run in an al qaeda

magazine called "inspire." this appeared in the spring, english-speaking version of that magazine. the congressman said he was disturbed by the photo. >> the photo is certainly concerning. it is calling on al qaeda members to carry out a terrorist attack and a year after the boston marathon bombings, we should be mindful that rogue individuals inspired by al qaeda can use household items to carry out these devastating attacks. >> that concern very valid as the one-year anniversary of the boston marathon bombings are approaching. also this photo depicts one of the largest international airports in the country that, alone, is causing alarm. the fbi and the transportation safety administration and sfo all believe that this is a stock photo of the airport, not one taken by someone linked with al qaeda. we want to reiterate, again, the fbi says no public safety threat specific to the bay area right

now, but they're looking back into this. a south bay homeless man expected to be in court today to face murder charges. ryan goodson stabbed and killed another homeless man in san jose in early february. just hours later, he got into a fight with palo alto police allegedly biting one of the officers. he pleaded guilty to those charges, but has yet to enter a plea on the murder charge. more police may be coming to san jose if city council votes to adopt charges to measure b. city council woman rose herrera will talk about her right to return policy at a committee meeting tonight. the proposal looks to modify the city's measure b pension reform initiative to allow some veteran police officers to return to the force by modifying the disability definitions. herrera says dozens of police officers told her they would return under her new policy, but the police officer association says they have not heard of officers willing to do so.

it's 5:06. we have heard of the cool down trending today. you can feel it in the air, in fact, meteorologist rob mayeda in for christina. >> across the south bay and east bay and a quick check of our temperatures around the south bay shows us we're in the mid-50s around campal and around the peninsula also waking up to mostly upper 40s to mid-50s and you're seeing about the same around the tri-valley this morning. temperatures near 52 in danville and 46 in dublin. low clouds and fog reducing visibility down to a third of a mile or less in santa rosa and you're seeing reduced visibilities, too, from santa cruz over towards gilroy and the low clouds hanging out around san francisco and the peninsula and even through the better part of the morning staying to the west of the golden gate and then later this evening, more low clouds and high clouds also coming in just after sunset as we head into tonight. a bit more mild. we're talking mostly 70s closer to san jose and low 70s near san

francisco and still temperatures fairly nice for spring sunshine around livermore and the trend will continue to cool down. temperatures dropping another five degrees with that ocean air conditioning as we head into the weekend. mike? >> talking about that ocean air conditioning and we have an example of that. moisture in the air and fog and low visibility in parts of the north bay and patches pretty severe you're all right for 101, still maintaining the speed limit. mist and drizzle accompany this. coming down towards the golden gate bridge, the first time across the golden gate bridge this week which it probably isn't for most. pay $1 more as you pay the toll. east shore freeway and no slowing on our sensors just yet. a smoother drive and no real moving for the sencensors on eir side. westbound 580 the commute direction. right now the commute and there

was a stall earlier and moved from the roadway a backup coming out of the altama pass. parents in the south bay making some serious claims about a day care center. they're worried about the way they say some staff members are treating their children. today in the bay bob redell live at the children's center. bob, the state is already involved. >> yes, good morning, lauren. the california department of social services is investigating de colores children's center in south san jose. near highways 101 and 85. they're investigating this center after discover violations during inspections earlier this year. now, according to the documents you see on your tv state, the center had unqualified staff working with infants and not enough staff on site, in other words, the staff to student ratio was too lopsided and during one inspection in march

welcome back, a suspected fresno contract worker killing nine people has now confessed to killing 40 people over several decades. he told investigators the crimes took place when he was involved in a drug cartel. martinez targeted victims all over california dating back to the 1980s. another underwater ping deep in the indian ocean was detected six hours ago as they continue to look for malaysian airlines

flight 370. an australian naval plane picked up a signal in the same area where sounds were first heard earlier this week. those pings are consistent with the plane's black boxes. excuse me. searchers will further analyze that signal overnight but they say they're now zeroing in on the targeted patch of the indian ocean. a possible swan song, meanwhile, for blackberry. jackie deangeles is live at cnbc headquarters with what the makers of the cell phone are saying and how the futures are going. good morning, jackie. >> good morning to you. the future is looking lower today after a strong day across the board yesterday for stocks. the federal reserve's decision to keep rates low for the foreseeable future sent stocks soaring. the s&p up 20 and the nasdaq up 70. meantime, that big blackberry story. ceo john chen saying it is willing to exit the mobile phone business if it remains

unprofitable. blackberry once held a 20% share of the global smartphone market, but has, obviously, seen sharp declines since the rise of android devices. look to acquire and partner other companies to boost its presence as a secure communication platform. of course, that is one thing that blackberry is also well known for. guys, back to you. >> jackie, thank you much. we'll check in with meteorologist rob mayeda. we told you late last night you would be waking up very early. >> what was that four hours ago? all caffeine and coffee at this point. the weather will wake you up and sea breeze pretty strong. mist and drizzle around parts of the coast and that fog can slow things down, mike. keeping a close eye on that on your morning commute. we have views of the ground, which is nice because the cloud cover at times has dropped visibility down around places like santa rosa, at times down to about a third of a mile or less. so, what to expect today. you have the low clouds around

the bay and mist at times around the coast. for our inland locations, we'll see a cool down today thanks to the all-day sea breeze dropping our temperatures down another five to ten degrees and this morning the low clouds spilling back in and with the low clouds we'll also have high clouds coming in. all this pointing to a cooler finish to your workweek and you can see it right there at the bottom of the screen. seven-day forecast dropping the temperatures down as you head towards the weekend. speaking of temperatures coming down first pitch with arizona diamondbacks in town and temperatures around 60 around game time and the nice giants' jacket should be perfect for the ballpark. now, notice the futurecast as we go through the morning. areas of low clouds and fog and later on as we head towards the evening after 2:00, now you're seeing high clouds spreading in from the south. part of a weather system that will bring not only a strengthening sea breeze for us, which will keep cooling our temperatures down as that low passes down to the south, that will lead to the temperatures cooling but in the hill tops the north bay, something to watch

out for this weekend if you're heading up to the high country around the sierra or lake tahoe and notice here, isolated mountain showers showing up around 5:00 tomorrow evening as that moisture comes up out of southern california. not expecting things around the bay area to fire up. but a sea breeze this weekend which will drop our temperatures down and thundershowers could be in the forecast. around the bay area today, 76 dexwrees fd degrees for san jose and temperatures low to mid-60s around the north bay and tri-valley 80 and over towards pleasa pleasanton. 78 degrees in walnut creek and continue to see those temperatures running a little bit cooler as we move through the rest of the weekend. so, fog really the only concern this morning, but you notice here in the three-day outlook, temperatures moving into the weekend and running into the 60s around the coast and dropping into the lower 70s into the north bay and also out towards

the tri-valley. back to you. >> all right, rob, you talked about fog. glowing lights in the north bay. now, remember, traffic and the weather they're tied together and we can use that weather data and this orange area, our road weather index what it is like on the roadway calculates out to being a bit foggy through the north bay. petaluma, novato. by the time you get to san rafael, a glow to the visibility is a little bit better. really watch the coast here as well as south through daly city and in towards santa cruz and mont monterey. reported from university and we found we do have that disabled vehicle right there on the shoulder made its way from the center divide across the roadway. must have been a temporary road break causing that slow down and now seeing traffic moving slowly, again. zoom out to the rest of the bay and palo alto, i should show you this first.

watch the peninsula coastline and now a look at the bay area map and see the south bay and the tri-valley. back to you. over in east palo alto to the family killed in a crosswalk on her way to school. she was hit and killed at gloria way in 2011. people living in that area say it was a dangerous intersection. they filed a wrongful death lawsuit saying the city maintained dangerous conditions at that intersection. the palo alto weekly reports the suit was settled last month. since the crash the city has installed flashing lights in the crosswalk and intersection warning signs and eliminated curbside parking to improve driver sight lines. the driver in that crash was never charged. the woman arrested for stealing a laptop at a san francisco cafe may be behind a number of other thefts. a person looking like paul

daniel rawas caught on camera stealing a flat screen tv from an apartment building last month. officers are now working to determine if she's connected to similar crimes in the area over the past few months. 5:20, former san francisco supervisor will surrender today to start his sentence for perjury. he was initially supposed to serve a year in county jail, but last week a judge decided to lower that to 60 days in jail. the remainder of his punishment served in home detention and community service. he has already served five years in prissen for mail fraud, extortion and bribery. the rock 'n' roll hall of fame getting ready to welcome a new class, including a singer with strong ties to the south bay. we'll take a look, coming up.

"today in the bay" christie smith just got an update for us on that overnight search. >> we've seen one coast guard cutter going back and forth here off the shore of ocean beach. what we're being told, it's very dark out there and then we see a blue light pop up. they're basically because of the drift patterns looking between the golden gate bridge and just a little bit south of ocean beach. also, firefighters are here and they're doing that, standing by in case the coast guard finds something out there and they need help right away, if they do find this 14-year-old. but it's actually the heroic actions of a 17-year-old that are being complimented this morning for what that teen surfer did yesterday. in fact, that teen surfer didn't help out, they could be looking for three people this morning. here's what happened, yesterday afternoon a man, his teen son and teen nephew were walking

along ocean beach when suddenly a rip current pulled the teens out to sea. the man ran in to try to save them and that's when the 17-year-old surfer, tony barbero happened to be close by. >> i saw a boy out there, you know, his arms were flailing, but thought he was playing in the water screaming to his dad. his dad points to me and points back to the son and i look over and the son is motioning to help him. i pull him on my board. >> now, he rescued the 17-year-old and then saw the father bobbing in the waves, apparently unconscious at the time. got him out. paramedics gave him cpr, got a pulse back and taken to ucsf for treatment. incidentally, the surfer that swam into action his father is a captain of the fire department. they have signs on how dangerous the rip currents are.

certainly no secret but everyone is hoping for the best out here this morning even though it has been quite some time. at day break they're going to be bringing up more resources out because of the fog, they're not sure yet if they'll be able to use a helicopter in the search. reporting live in san francisco, christie smith, "today in the bay." >> let's hope they find something. thank you. school is closed at the pennsylvania high school where nearly two dozen people were stabbed yesterday. one student had emergency surgery overnight and listed in extremely critical condition. stabbed several times, doctors say he could die. yesterday witnesses say alex hribal had a blank expression on his face as he went through the hallways slashing students with two large knives. hribal is being charged as an adult. he is facing dozens of charges, including four counts of atte t attempted homicide. his motive still a mystery. >> you know, not at this point.

there's talk out there of certain things happening with a threat and things like that. that's part of our investigation and we'll surely look into that but right now it's early and we'll put that together. >> when our kids come back here we'll have support resources for them. this community is a special place and i don't want that to be lost. >> hribal told authorities he wanted to die. he is due back in court at the end of the month. 5:44. san jose day care now being investigated by the state after authorities found a series of violations. "today in the bay" bob redell live at the de colores children center. this has parents concerned. >> two parents who have already pulled their children from the de colores children center and are issuing this warning to other parents to reconsider. >> i've been here for a few years and i've never had any problems before. >> that was a parent who is actually not concerned, but are some who are and so is the

near 50 degree temperatures taking you up towards san francisco, you'll notewise the low clouds and drizzle around the areas to the west of the golden gate bridge this morning you're seeing numbers out towards the 50 and tri-valley and seeing low cloud cover through the dublin and also some 40s there in the north bay. but speaking of the north bay. this is where the visibility is at its worse and half mile visibility due to low clouds and fog and some same awaiting you around half moon bay and gilroy down to a half mile, too, as you head down the coast. right now the low clouds around widespread locations for the inner bay and peel back mainly west of the golden gate as we head towards the afternoon and high clouds this evening and that all-day sea breeze which will help drop our temperatures down especially for inland valleys. still near 80 in saratoga and san francisco fairly cool today with those highs in the low 60s and north bay highs in the mid-70s and 80 degrees around the tri-valley and those

temperatures, too, cooling back into the mid-70s. now chefor a check of your thury commute, here's mike. >> regular camera right here. san raphael. this is what rob is talking about. lower passables and san rafael right around north san pedro. also tied together with the weather system so that computes out to being a foggy situation for what we get for the readings. be careful out there for 101 and highway 1 along the coast. the east shore freeway we had a stall blocking your hov lane and moved over to the right shoulder. might find a little slowing as you pass by the incident as crews arrive, but nothing big there approaching the bay bridge toll plaza. in towards livermore for west 580 and things come up as you pass by and then ease as you pass by ysibel and the rest of the bay looking really well

egotistical behavior in his relationship with reeva steenkamp before he killed her. pistori pistori pistorius' apology to his girlfriend's family was an insincere spectacle that ignored the feelings of her relatives. pistorius said he loved steenkamp and thought he was protecting her when he shot through his bathroom doofr at what he believed was an intruder. a man who caused a crash into a florida day care is on the run this morning. one girl was killed and 14 others were hurt happened yesterday just north of orlando. they're looking for a 26-year-old man, they say, has been arrested eight times since 2000. they say the suspect's suv hit a convertible, causing that car to jump a curb and crash through the wall of the day care. the suspect's suv was found a few hours later. the anti-terrorism hearing on capitol hill reveals alarming connections to sfo. an al qaeda magazine

the number of people sick could actually be growing. elena gomez is at the port of san diego with more details. >> tracking that cruise ship all morning expected to be here at 5:45 in about 15 minutes or so. from here, it will stay here for a couple hours and then head out to ensenada. as of monday 37 people were showing symptoms of a gastrointestinal illness and that number is up to 83 people, 66 passengers and 17 crew members. this is out of more than 3,000 total passengers. now, yesterday passengers were stopped in santa barbara. you can see them in this video here. those that are sick are being asked to stay in their rooms to help the virus from spreading any more.crown princess now say have a sanitation plan in place falloying the center for disease control standards. that means they're disinfecting ship like elevator buttons and door handles and also asking passengers to wash their hands often.

there. 47 degrees in the east bay right now where we've gomfrom the emeryville cam. what to expect as we go hour-by-hour and low clouds west of san francisco and along the coast this morning as we head towards noon today, we'll see clouds start to break up and inland temperatures with the all-day sea breeze cooling by five to ten degrees. evening low clouds spilling back in and also high clouds coming in this afternoon and hinting at more changes as we head towards tomorrow for mountain areas in the far north bay. san francisco, we're looking at temperatures close to 60 and first pitch time just after 7:00 this evening and clouds coming on in. speaking of the cloud cover, fairly extensive and then as we head through the afternoon, patchy low clouds continue on the coast and watch what happens here as we head towards the afternoon. high clouds coming up out of the south and this is part of a weather system that will scoot

by just to the south of the bay area and kind of supercharge that sea breeze as we head into friday and temperatures will run cooler and also watching these hill tops while we don't think we'll see showers around the bay area, instability increasing on those mountaintop locations and even in sonoma county and even out to the sierras. 5:00 on friday evening if we're going to head to the high country, typical for this time of year and sometimes afternoon thunderstorms firing up if you can toss in mid-level moisture and looks like we'll see that. so, use some caution if you head up to lake tahoe and see hiking or camping and chance of thundershowers in the high country for friday evening into saturday. around the bay area today, once the low clouds clear, pretty nice day around san jose and still near 80 in saratoga. san francisco, the peninsula, 60s to near 70s. downtown san francisco in the low 60s and north bay see the highs in the mid-70s. and the trend that you're noticing on the seven-day forecast and for our weekend

outlook, notice the numbers coming down. the onshore winds will pick up and that will drop us from the 70s around the peninsula through the 60s san francisco turning cooler through sunday and seeing the same temperature trend even out towards the tri-valley dropping out of the 80s into the mid-70s as we head towards sunday afternoon. mike? >> what would san francisco in the spring be without a wind breaker or scarf. northbound traffic really jamming up. now, we'll show you on the map what is going on. there is a crash north 101 at oakland road. now, it sounds like the activity now completely off to the shoulder but that caused the backup just as the first burst we talk about comes through san jose. here you're jamming up and all the way past 680 to that and overnight road work being done and they're completely clearing from the area and connector ramps open and rest of your south bay moves pretty nicely. tri-valley a slower drive and

there aren't too many crocodiles in the sacramento area this morning, but there is at least one. police say someone abandon a four-foot crocodile outside a reptile store yesterday. he was a littling a vuivae inga. he was left inside a storage bin with a note that said, called rescue. got out of that cage and started wandering around. the crocodile is now in the hands of the state's fish and wildlife department from a distance, no doubt. >> we'll see you in a while, crocodile. time now 5:51. facebook making a move that will make some users pretty angry. the sharks playa bound and now we know who they will face in the first round of the stanley cup playoffs.
