suspect appeared in court while the community held a vigil for those injured. peteral sand alexander. good morning to you. >> reporter: doctors are hopeful all of the victims here will survive. we just spoke to the hospital. they say there are still three students in critical condition, including one student in what they describe as extremely critical condition. that student had another surgery overnight. also, we are learnling new details about the final moments of this vicious rampage, where the suspect was taken down pence the schools. he told those who brought him down he wanted to die. >> real quiet, a shadow in the hallway, that's how a fellow classmate described alex hribel. late wednesday, he was marched out of school in shackles, charged with aggravated assault and attempted homicide. his attorney said he will be seen by psychiatrists to

stomach. >> i said to the other kids in the room, i need to put pressure on this room, can you get me some paper towels or something? >> police say the attack happened five minutes before the suspect was tackled by assistant sam king and a security officer, and senior ian griffin. >> mr. king took off to take the kid down. i was right behind him. we both jumpd on him and immobilized him. >> reporter: and early this morning, i spoke to the police chief in charge of this investigation. he tells me right now they have no better understanding exactly why this happened here. this suspect is not speaking to authorities. but one item they are investigating right now is the possibility of an angry phone call between the suspects and another student the night before the attack took place. matt, savannah. >> still a lot of questions. peter alexander, thanks very much. the student gracie evans and christy baird helped save the lives of se of tear wounded friends. ladies, good morning to both of you. >> good morning.

>> good morning. >> both of you not only witnessed the stabbing but saw the awful after math in that classroom. i guess my first question is, how you both are doing this morning? >> i didn't get a wink of sleep last night because i am so traumatized. >> i think i'm as okay as i can be. >> gracie, you told the story how your best friend jumped in front of this knife to save you from being stabbed. what do you remember about those moments? >> well, i was just so scared and i didn't know what to do and all i can really think about was did this, did this just really happen? like i couldn't believe my best friend just took a knife for me. i can tell you just how much blood was on that knife and i couldn't, it's pretty scary. >> in the moments after, i know a teacher pulled you into a

classroom, where you saw yet another student who was gravely wounded. you went over and applied pressure to his wound. how bad were those wounds and how did you know, gracie, what to do? >> okay. i actually had no idea how to do any of that. i just had a gut feeling that it wasn't right for him to sit up and that he needed his airways cleared. so i sat him down. i said i needed to put pressure on the wound so i got paper towels and i put pressure on the wound and like he started barfing and i felt really bad, but i couldn't deal with the smell and so as soon as i got up and an emt came into the room and said you need the move, so i moved. >> it was an awful scene, christ in, as it turns out, you were in that very same classroom helping some of your friends, it turns out he was your prom date. how did you keep your friend calm?

what did you say to him in those moments? >> yeah, i was in the same classroom as gracie. we got pulled into the same room. i was trying my hardest to keep him calm, but i know he wasn't calm. i was just holding his hand and like rubbing his hand and trying to tell him it was going to be okay and that we were going to go to prom and that he was going to be okay. >> christen, i know you know of this suspect alex hribel. you actually live down the street from him. what can you tell us about him? is there anything about him that would have made you suspect something like this could happen? >> i mean, he was always very quiet. i would have never ek expected anything from him like this. but i mean, he was just quiet and we didn't really talk very much. so i can't really say. >> gracie, kristen, thank you so much for being here this morning. thank you for your heroism yesterday. we wish you all the best as you try to deal with this terrible circumstance.

the malaysia air flight 370, new sounds detected from what could be the recorders. katie is in kuala lumpur, good morning,000. >> reporter: hey, matt, it was shaping up to be quite a quiet day today, but that wasn't until an hour ago when they announced they heard another set of pings. this time it came from a plane. they have yet to analyze it. they do believe it to be consistent with a black box. even more than encouraging news, as you know every time they hear a set of pings, they are able to determine where those black boxes and that potential wreckage might be under water. they have been searching yet 22,300 square miles. it is much smaller than it has been. the australian navy parachuted down world war ii era with listening devices. the benefit of those is that they are very quiet. they won't detract from ocean fields. they will continue to listen there for the next few days.

probably well into next week, ten days after the 30-day boxes. once that is done, they will put the unmanned submarine down in the water to map the ocean floor. >> that could take a week that. could take two weeks. it could take three weeks. still no word on how long that will take. a lot of good news coming out of here today, matt. >> katie, thanks so much. >> to florida now the search is on for a hit and run driver. nbc's kerry sanders is in orlando this morning with this story. kerry, good morning, what happened? >> reporter: good morning, savannah, sadly, one child has died. 11 more were injured. one is in critical condition and three adults were taken to the hospital. you can imagine the fear and the panic of the horrific scene when parents rolled up and saw that a car had gone through the front wall of the day care center here. now police say this has turned from a tragedy into a manhunt

for the man responsible. >> 63, 4035. >> reporter: ambulances raced to the kinder care learning center along with frantic parents and what they found was a nightmare of injured children. >> the injuries on the children range from severe, critical, all the way through to minor. >> reporter: police say the day care center was number of children when a silver dodge durango forced another car off the road sending it crashing into the billing. >> one of the vehicles struck the rear of the other vehicle and that vehicle traveled into the day care. >> reporter: a four-year-old girl died. one little three-year-old girl was in the car. >> she's not doing well. she is in icu. >> reporter: the driver of the durango fled. police want to search for the suv. man they say was driving, 28-year-old robert alex korchado. they found his vehicle. no sign of him. a short time later, police say

he rented a car, which authorities have identified. they searched for it through night. police described him as dangerous. he served time for cocaine trafficking, according to court records and was out on bail in another case involving drugs, hit and run and leaving the scene of an accident. at the time of the accident, more than 50 children and adults were in the day care center. >> we're just grateful it wasn't worse than what it was. >> the driver of the car that was forced into the day care center that went right through that front of the wall there, he is physically unhurt and police say he is not going to be charged. back to you. >> what a sad situation. kerry sanders in orlando, thank you. >> we started this morning with a couple difficult stories. you have a better ending or outcome to another story? >> an elite fbi team has rescued a north carolina man five days

after he disappeared from his house following a bike ride. nbc pete williams is in washington with details. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, it was the fbi's highly trained hostage rescue team that made this recovery safely. authorities say 63-year-old frank arthur janzen has been missing. his wife became concerned when she saw what were droplets of bloochltd he was rescued unhurt from his can'tors just before noon wednesday at an apartment complex in southeast atlanta. now, police aren't saying yet what they believe the motive was for the kidnapping, but law enforcement officials say his daughter is a local prosecutor in north carolina and they're investigating whether janzen's captors were ross scuittoed by her or her office. >> pete williams, thanks so much, pete. today president obama and the first lady head to austin, texas for the final day of the civil rights summit.

on wednesday, the president smoak spoke at a memorial service of the deadly shootings at ft. hood t. first couple met with the three victim's families before the ceremony and the president pledged to improve counseling for americans with mental health issues. the accused gunman was under psychiatric care undergoing treatment for anxiety and depression at the time of the shooting. as we approach one year since the baumpb marathon bombing. we are learning russia withheld valuable information about suspected bomber tamerlan tsarnaev, according to a report in the new york times. russia declined several fbi requests for more information about tsarnaev two years before that deadly attack, which could have potentially prompted harsher scrutiny of the suspect. tamerlan and his younger brother are suspected of planting bombs that wounded three people and wounding 60.

a medical helicopter crashed on a hospital roof. the chopper had just dropped off a patient. it was taking off again an spun out of control and landed on its side. have any injuries. we have incredible video captured on the dash cam of a minivan in texas. it shows a college professor riding along a busy road as he approaches an intersection. take a look at what he sees there, the cement truck lost control, it tipped on its side, crashed right into him, amazingly he was okay. his minivan was damaged. he had installed the camera in his car about a year ago just in case he got into an accident. i guess it serves him well, this time around. >> that is unbelievable. >> just the car is featured in this case. >> thank you. mr. roker is here with a check of the weather. >> you are looking fantastic

photos. >> what's this one? >> that was the first day of kindergarten. >> but 27-year-old katheryn deprill just met her birth mother kathy pocheck two weeks ago. >> oh, my gosh. >> how great is that your mom made awe of these? >> i know. >> kathryn was raised and then she learned she was was abandoned in a burger king. it was head line news in 1986. last month with the support of her adopted mother brenda, she turned to facebook, posting this photo of her. he hoped for answers to life-long questions. the so-called burger king baby plea went viral. and the search came to an end a few weeks later. >> it's so surreal. i never in a million years thought this was going to happen.

i don't know that i necessarily prepared myself for it. >> now katheryn is learning more about why she was abandoned. her birth mother said she was raped 16 years old but never told anyone, not even her parents. she said she gave birth in her bedroom and then left her at the burger king. >> i'm grateful that you're letting me into your life. it's been a long road to this reunion. >> how do you feel? >> i don't know. i never thought it was going to happen this fast. >> i know, it's so fast. i'm just so happy and thrilled that you came looking for me. >> yeah. it relieved a lot. >> it means a lot. >> it really did. >> katheryn deprill, her mom brenda hollis and her birth mom are all here with us. it's good to see you, ladies. it's hard to not have a few tears in your eyes.

what was it like when you came face-to-face with your birth mom? >> it's very exciting. lots of emotions and actually kind of awkward. all right. just give me the hug. let's start with that. it really broke the ice. >> kathy, were you nervous? >> i was extremely nervous. i knew -- i was at the advantage because i had seen interviews that she had done and i was just so proud of her and how articulate she was in expressing her feelings and grateful for her mom for a beautiful childhood that she gave her. >> you knew since you were 12 years old the difficult circumstances that you were born into. is it something that you always wondered about that bothered you? >> yes. always. you wonder where you come from. i have a wonderful family, i said from day one, i would never want to replace them. being adopted part of you is missing.

i'm not sure if you're adopted you just don't really understand that. >> for you to see this facebook message and you know this is your little girl who is looking for you, was there any hesitation? were you afraid at all to come forward especially the circumstances? >> no, my immediate thought, i was so afraid somebody was going to take advantage of the situation and we immediately contacted -- my husband and i immediately contacted our attorney john waldron from allentown. said you have to find her. get in touch with her immediately. i was so worried that, you know, someone was going to take advantage of it. >> well, we've got to bring brenda in here. everyone says you're the saint and the star of the story for raising such a wonderful girl. you know, you encouraged katheryn to look for her birth mother. i think that's a pretty selfless act. >> she's been talking about it for a long time. a while ago, she had seen

from the assistant principal, the security guard who got stabbed himself. to the other students who jumped in there. and a lot of students, you know, as we heard earlier on today who once they saw their friends were stabbed were applying pressure on the wounds and trying to keep them from bleeding to death. >> how many times have we said it with different weapons? you start your day, you come in, the bell rings and next thing you know you're covering a gaping wound trying to save your friend's life or friends jumping in front of the attacker so they would get stabbed instead of their dear friends. people in the toughest times do the brave things. >> people ask about security at the school. this is considered a bedroom community of pittsburgh. they implemented a security system that requires people to be buzzed in, but you're a student so you're able to enter. there was a school resource officer who is armed but did not have to use that weapon to immobilize the young man. but of course the question is

there was a lot of marriage issues, there was a lot of people who were just kind of at the end of their rope, you know? very hopeless and happened to -- one woman stepped on a remote control and the tv turned to a crusade and turned her life around. >> you're kidding. wow. >> every member of my family came to faith through billy's ministry. and i can't even be around him without sobbing my eyes out. i love him so much. when i was flying in for his 90th birthday, flying into the charlotte area, just so gorgeous, and, of course, i was thinking of all the times he must have flown in after traveling the world in order to impact other people's lives, knowing that he was going to finally get home to his beloved family, because he paid a huge price, he and ruth both, for his ministry in terms of his own family time that he gave up. and i know you guys know that. but -- >> what was he like as a grandfather? >> that's probably the question we get asked the most often. i think people would like to know he was just a very normal
