friday forecast with meteorologist christina loren. >> temperatures running pretty mild. 57 right here in san jose and meanwhile 48 degrees up in santa rosa. we made it to the weekend, it's looking pretty good for your outdoor plans. couple things to note, get to your forecast coming up in just moments and right now let's check your drive. here's anthony slaughter. >> you're looking live outside at our dublin cam and steady stream of traffic moving in and no accidents to report on and we do have some fog and you can see on our traffic maps in the north bay, that's where we're seeing the most dense fog this morning denoted by the yellow pallgon. a little bit of slowing otherwise for 4:30 in the morning, not too bad. wide open lanes and traffic flow at 50 to 60 miles per hour. very good there. back to you guys.

4:31. breaking news right now. authorities working frantically to figure out exactly who was onboard a bus when it was involved in a fiery crash yesterday. it happened on interstate 5 in the city of orland, just west of chico. northbound interstate 5 right now is still shut down. southbound just opened minutes ago. "today in the bay" sam bronchtraveled to orland overnight and you just got an update from the chp. >> it's hard to conceptionalize what is more jarring, the skeletal remains of the bus behind me or just to get out to the scene i was stepping over triage, oxygen masks and torn clothing. so many people injured in that serious, traumatic accident. you're looking at what it appeared like earlier this afternoon, 5:40 when it first happened. the latest news is that there is a tenth confirmed futatality fr

this crash. at this point we know that 35 people, according to chp, have been transported to local medical centers on top of the ten folks who have died. we asked them today, have all the family members been notified yet? we were told no. of course, that has to do with the fact that there are folks coming from southern california and families all over the state and chp and authorities have not yet effectively reached everybody involved. they don't know necessarily the status of their loved one and they don't know what caused this accident. which could be an equally perplexing problem for many. we asked the spokesperson how they would know what caused it. >> by doing an autopsy they are going to determine if there was a medical condition, if the driver was deceased prior to the accident or if they had a medical issue that caused them to drive over the median, if it was intentional, if it was accidental, if it was, you know, negligent driving.

movement in a steering wheel, all the facts, speed, applying brakes, turning movements, all the marks that are going to be on the roadway are going to help determine what the cause of the accident was. >> so, the problem is this could actually take months to determine, putting all thez pieces together, according to the ch. another problem, you probably want to know, how do you know the students were affected. that could take a little time to iron out, as well. actually three buses of students going up north to hum blt state university. that's why the school department district can identify which ones were on which buses. all the information we should have in our hands over the course of the next day. live from orland, california, i'm sam brock, let me send it back to you. >> in the meantime, parent waiting for word on their students or children. just so that you're clear

the fedex appeared to have run into the bus. the bus itself carrying all those students. it's owned by tour bus company silverado stages. we did speak with the company ceo overnight, as you can imagine, he was as devastated as everyone else. >> the most extensive actions possible to ensure the safety of every one of our passengers and all of our drivers. this is never a call that you want to get. and it's a rough night for everybody in the silverado family. >> now, we checked records and found the company has just two accidents in its 27-year history. only one of those a crash involving an injury. early indications show the bus and its driver were not at fault in this crash. fedex is also responding to the crash. a company spokeswoman replaced this statement, "our thoughts and prayers are with everyone involved in the tragic accident on i-5 in california. we are cooperating fully with authorities as they

investigate." we're hearing from humbuldt state this morning. the president said, "our hearts go out to those who have been affected. we are here to support them and their families in any way possible." again, those children were on their way to humbuldt state. we'll hear from a student that was onboard that bus and updates from the scene, certainly, all morning long. other news, 49ers quarterback colinkaepernick a possible sexual assault. teammate quintan patton and antonio went back to the quarterback's condo and she admits she smoke pot and took off her clothes and she says they did not have sex and later she said she passed out and woke up at the hospital with no memory of what happened or how she got there. investigators are trying to

figure out what happened. >> what miami police have is an incident report where calling kaepernick and patton are listed in the report, but just as an information report. >> the 49ers say they're monitoring this case. lawyers for kaepernick's teamma teammate, smith was arrested after santa clara county deputies found three illegal assault weapons in his home in san jose in 2012. the gun charges combined with his arrest last fall for dui and marijuana possession. a third 49er also in legal trouble this afternoon. cornerback chris culver's lawyers will be in court to talk about his hit and run charges. culver arrested on march 28th after they say he hit a bicyclist with his car and then crash under to a witness' car as he tried to run away. he also faces a felony charge of possessing metal knuckles.

a steel company has to pay thousands of dollars in fine. cal osha issued new fines against the steel company. one worker died after he was crushed by a load of rebar. the company did not have adequate safety procedures in place and failed to secure the steel delivery before the accident. it was the second death at the construction site. the 49ers first game at the stadium will be this august. 4:38. today we could learn more about evidence against state senator leland yee. yee and his lawyer will be in court for a pretrial hearing and to discuss next steps in that case. earlier this week, the suspended state senator pleaded not guilty to federal charges of corruption, gun running, money laundering and drug charges. former san francisco school board president keith jackson and convicted gangsr raymond "shrimp boy" chow were also arrested. turning now to our microclimate forecast. let's take a live look outside. san francisco this morning. can you make it out there at the

embarcadero. >> christina, looks like fog early, but i imagine that will burn off. >> yeah, you know what, fog makes mid-level clouds and an area of low pressure just off shore, scott and laura, good morning to you. that will bring about a cooler day. might even see a little bit of drizzle this morning but overall looking pretty good. ten miles visibility reported at the surface in san francisco and otherwise we're looking pretty good to kick off your friday and, yes, you made it. we're so close now at the final home stretch. so, as we head throughout the day today, if you're headed outdoors, sunrise at 6:40 and nice and clear for lunchtime and just about everywhere except for the immediate coastline. as we head throughout this evening, that fog will return between 5:00 and 6:00. a great-looking weekend and can't wait to show you those numbers. that's coming up in just a few minutes. >> good morning, christina. as you mention that fog is causing slow downs in the north bay, but otherwise we're finding typical slow spots again with

at our forecast, coming up. more now on the top breaking story of the morning. the deadly bus crash on interstate 5 in orland is about 100 miles north of sacramento. this story still developing, but what we know right now, northbound interstate 5 still shut down. a total of ten people are dead, at least 35 others are hurt. the tour bus carrying more than 40 high school seniors from the los angeles area was making its way to humboldt state for a weekend visit. students described the horrifying moments. >> my head was down and i look up and veer off the road. i just kind of see black, but there's fire at the front of the bus, it's crushed in the front, pretty much. so, we all start jumping up to run away. >> right now, dramatic video and pictures from the scene continue to pour into our newsroom. peggy bunker gathering those images and will bring them to you in just a couple of minutes. in other news, a change at the top of the health and human services department.

president barack obama plans to announce the resignation of kathleen sebelius who -- even though sebelius is stepping down, many on capitol hill criticizing the obama administration for all the recent changes and what that is costing americans. >> what is the cost of all these changes and while we're on the subject, how many more delays and changes are yet to come? >> nominate silvia matthews to replace her. the largest tech in san francisco may get even bigger. nancy pelosi and san francisco mayor ed lee have been asked to make what salesforce.com is calling a significant announcement about the company's growth in the city. at this point, we're not sure what that is, only that init volves getting bigger. wall street, meanwhile, looking to bounce back after stocks took a huge tumble yesterday.

jackie deangeles live with that and the rest of the news before the bell. good morning, jackie. >> good morning, scott. well, futures right now pointing to a lower open on wall street and we may not get the bounce that everyone is looking for. certainly by all accounts a brutal day yesterday. all three indexes closing in the red, but the dow down 267 points. the s&p losing 39. the nasdaq closing down 130 points. interesting to note, the nasdaq saw its worst day in two and a half years. technology and interstate stocks like amazon, priceline and google momentum named. they were really slammed. speaking of google, some news on that front, the company is going to open up sale of its google glass products to all u.s. customers. 9:00 a.m. on tuesday is when that is going to happen. the beta version of the smartglasses will sell for $1,500 plus tax. customizable shades and frames with that price. previously the product was only available to select testers and they were called explorers. >> that's one word for it.

jackie, thank you much. let's check the forecast now with meteorologist christina loren. >> happy friday, everybody. you made it to the end of the week. not too bad to start the day. up in the north bay where we are in the upper 40s and upper 50s at that right here in san jose and 57 degrees to start the day. nice out there, mostly cloudy to kick off your friday and then we'll see those clouds clear by about lunchtime today, maybe even a little bit of drizzle expected at the immediate coast until 10:00 a.m. san francisco want to show you your trend for today. by lunchtime, still in the low 60s. holding on to that jacket weather. lots of sunshine coming your way and about 65 degrees later on. 74 for the peninsula and 75 degrees in the south bay for today with those clouds really breaking apart here in the south bay by about 10:00 a.m. 76 degrees today in beautiful wine country, the trivalley part of the bay area. here's what we're looking for

throughout the weekend. it's going to be nice. warmer day and hit the beach with your family. sunday is looking good. 76 degrees for the north bay. and 75 degrees for the peninsula on sunday and tri-valley at 79 degrees, not too much cooler for saturday. but, overall, we're looking pretty good. changes coming your way for next week and get into that forecast coming up. back to you, scott and laura. more now on our breaking news this morning. the devastating crash that has left families in agony as they wait to learn the fate of their loved ones, especially one mother of twin teenage girls. peggy bunker joins us now from the newsroom with more. such a horrifying crash. >> you can only imagine, laura, how devastating this must be from the families. we're hearing from several of those families and student affected by the bus crash. not all the families have been notified yet of the fatalities. in fact, one family remains in agony as they had twin teenage girls on the bus. one twin is safe and their

younger sister is simply praying she's safe. >> i just know that -- >> now, this is their mother, marissa gill. she's desponded wondering if she'll see her older daughter, again. i'm very sad, but my church tells me to have faith in god and that she will be okay. that everything is going to be okay. one other student on the bus, as says he is still in shock after chatting with a fellow student on the bus behind him. sitting right there for most of the trip. got up to charge his phone and the next minute he was gone. >> ten minutes later he is up there putting his music and stuff, and unfortunately, he's one of the ones that passed away. >> that boy's name is still not revealed, but you can see just the shock and devastation here that so many people are dealing with this morning. when you look at the pictures and how incredible this crash

was. sometimes you think it's miraculous did make it out safely. but we're continuing to fall though people that are telling us about their experience and we'll bring that to you coming up this morning, laura and scott. >> so many stories. thanks so much, peggy. in the meantime, continuing coverage of this deadly bus crash all morning long and when we're not on the air, you can always head to our website, nbcbayarea.com. in other news this morning at 4:50, oscar pistorius spent all day answering questions about the night he killed his girlfriend. the prosecutor tried to discount the olympian's version of what happened and called his character into question. he said pistorius shot his girlfriend after mistaking her for an intruder was not worried about break-ins, pointing to the fact that pistorius parked his cars on the street and hadn't fixed a cracked window in his home. the trial has adjourned until monday. conflicting news this morning about the search for that missing malaysian jet. the prime minister of australia

se says he's confident the latest ping he heard is from the black box, but the australian official in charge of the actual search says that may not be the case. the devices may hold the answer as to why the boeing 777 lost communications and veered so far off course. it's 4:51. we'll check in with anthony slaughter with a look at your morning drive, right after this break.

welcome back to you. 4:5. we'll check your traffic in just a moment. looks like a pretty good weekend ahead, as well. welcome to you and welcome to your friday. in the meantime, stanford university being blamed for one of the country's most endangered rivers. environmental groups american rivers gave palo alto that title. the group warns that sanford does not remove a dam soon, the reservoir will fill in endangering a species of trout. the bottom line is the school uses the reservoir for irrigation. northbound interstate 5 still closed at this hour while officials pick through the wreckage of a bus crash, a horrifying crash. it killed ten people, several of them children. investigators say a fedex semi truck hit the bus head on yesterday near orland, that's just west of chico. ten people including both drivers, died at the scene.
