north of sacramento. nbc's miguel almaguer has the latest on this. miguel, good morning to you. >> reporter: matt, good morning. nearly 40 students were involved coming here from southern california to northern california that were injured. two are still in critical condition in the hospital. we now know at least ten people have died. this happened late last evening. these vehicles were traveling down interstate 5 late yesterday when the chp says there was a head-on collision. a fedex big rig tractor-trailer for unknown reasons, that tractor-trailer crossed a center divide line and hit that bus head on. it was a fiery and horrific collision. students told as they popped out of back windows, they scrambled

for their lives as the bus exploded in that pieces. the remains are still being held on i-5 as they work to reopen the highway. investigators coming up from the ntsb to help look into the accident. as you mentioned, some 40 people have been injured. the death toll stands at ten. two people are hospitalized at this facility. the investigation just beginning in the deadly crash. it will certainly take several days. savannah, back to you in washington. >> miguel almaguer, thank you. earlier this morning, we talked to jonathan gutierrez. i asked him to describe what happened. >> well, we were on the way to humboldt university. i personally was sleeping. i don't know the official story,

but from what i heard, the driver in the fedex truck hit us and then we crashed. >> can you take me back to the moments? what did you see? what did you hear? and what did you do? >> i was barely going to sleep, but i could still hear people. and then all of a sudden i heard people screaming and then when i woke up, that's when the impact hit. when the impact hit, i, like, flew from my seat to the seat in front of me and that caused the cut on my eyebrow. and then from there, i realized that we were in a bad cident and the entire aisle was full of smoke and that's when students were trying to escape the tour bus. >> and jonathan, i heard that you had to jump out of the bus, is that what happened? >> yes. there was an emergency exit, but there was too many people in the bus that were trying to get out, so students that were there broke the windows and that helped a lot of us get out safely. not safely, but get out of the bus. >> yeah. it sounds like it was an awful, awful scene.

what do you remember about what you saw when you landed, you looked around, was there fire? was there smoke? and how quickly did the ambulances come? >> there was just fire in front of the bus with the fedex truck. there was people crossing the street to get to the other side with injuries. it was very, like, surreal moment. i couldn't believe it myself. but it was happening. and i think, like, ten minutes after the incident, the ambulance got there to help us. >> well, you've been through so much. i know your dad came up from southern california to come get you. what was it like when you saw him? you must have been so glad to see his face. >> yes, i felt so relieved just to have him there, just to be able to, like, have someone to comfort me. >> well, jonathan, thank you so much for talking to us this morning. we wish you the very best in your healing and appreciate you taking the time. >> thank you. you're welcome. >> we'll go back to matt now in

new york. >> all right, savannah, thank you. now to the resignation of a key member of the obama administration. word came late on thursday that health and human services secretary kathleen sebelius is stepping down. her time in that role highlighted by the troubled rollout of the president's landmark health care law. nbc's chief white house correspondent and political director chuck todd has more on this. chuck, what's the impact? >> reporter: well, matt, it's going to be interesting. later this morning, the president will make it official confirming that he has accepted the resignation of kathleen sebelius, hhs secretary, and he'll be replacing her with his budget director sylvia burwell. of course, sebelius, after five years on the job, it's been the end of what's been a rocky tenure. >> 400,000 additional americans have signed up, and we expect that number to continue to grow. >> reporter: that was kathleen sebelius on capitol hill thursday, giving her a chance to turn in her resignation on a high note. while sebelius says she was not pushed out and that she's leaving on her own terms, there have been hints for months that her job could be in jeopardy

after the rocky rollout of healthcare.gov. in our interview back in november, while the president praised sebelius for the insurance product, he did question some of her management decisions. >> i think she'd be the first to admit that if we had to do it all over again, that there would have been a whole lot more questions that were asked in terms of how this thing is working. >> reporter: after that rollout, she became a regular target for critics in congress. >> why aren't you losing your insurance? >> because i'm part of the federal employees -- >> why aren't you in the exchange? you're in charge of this law. >> will you admit it will have a higher premium? >> no, i do not. >> reporter: in addition to the management issues, the white house also lost confidence in her ability to sell the product publicly. senior aides were not happy with how she struggled in what should have been a friendly interview with jon stewart. >> businesses don't get subsidies. >> so they get to delay because they're not going to get any extra money, but individuals don't, because they will? >> again, they're in the market

already. >> let me ask you this. am i a stupid man? >> reporter: after that episode, sebelius was only seen and rarely heard. the president didn't even praise her when he claimed victory on the launch of obamacare just last week. as for sylvia burwell, she's likely to get confirmed. that's not going to be the hard part. the hard part for her is she's going to have a tough confirmation process because republicans are going to see an opportunity in an election year to launch, once again, a campaign against health care. >> chuck todd, thank you. it is a big story here in washington this morning. thank you. meantime, we are learning more now about the 16-year-old charged in connection with that mass stabbing rampage at a pittsburgh area high school. but the question of why still remains. nbc's peter alexander is following this story. he's got the latest on the investigation. peter, good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning to you. police investigators tell me they are still interviewing witnesses. we're here at forbes hospital

where three students remain in critical condition. at a separate hospital in pittsburgh, the most severely wounded student, 17-year-old jared boger, he is on life support. that the knife narrowly missed his heart and spine. a community still struggling to come to grips, an investigation still searching for answers. sources close to the investigation tell nbc news at this time there's no evidence the suspect, 16-year-old alex hribal, was the victim of bullying and no reason to believe he was targeting anyone in particular. hribal faces attempted homicide charges. his attorney and parents met with him behind bars thursday. >> he's upset. he knows he's in a world of stuff right now, and how serious it is, and he can't believe he did this, to tell you the truth. >> reporter: a former fbi profiler insists there's a significant difference between mass shooters and mass stabbers. >> for a stabber, it's usually a lot more emotional.

it's a lot more rageful. it's a lot more personal. where a firearm allows you a real standoff capability, to be relatively unemotional. >> reporter: sophomore jeff la salle is healing at home. >> it just went in and out like that. >> reporter: moments after the attack, this lacrosse player was pulled into safety in a classroom by a teacher and another student. >> i thanked her so much that she was there, that she saved my life. >> reporter: this morning, brett hurt is finally home from the hospital. >> i didn't know what was going on. and the pain in my back, i realized something happened. >> reporter: the 16-year-old sophomore was stabbed trying to protect his best friend, tracy evans, who stayed with him until help arrived. we were invited for their emotional reunion. >> i've got your back always, you know that. >> reporter: it's nice see them together again. hribal's attorney says he has hired a psychiatrist, matt, for a psychiatric evaluation to check out his mental state. he says when he first met with the suspect after the attack, that he was like a deer in headlights.

>> peter, as always, thank you so much. natalie's here. she's got some new developments in the hunt for malaysia flight 370. officials are revealing that latest signal detected in the indian ocean was not likely from the plane's data recorders, but they are confident that crews are still looking in the right area. nbc's katy tur is in perth, australia with more. katy, good morning. >> reporter: hey, natalie. you are right. a little bit of housekeeping to report. the pings we were talking about yesterday were confirmed to not be part of mh 370. but still searchers say they are undeterred. the australian prime minister tony abbott visited shanghai today on a diplomatic mission. he told reporters out there that they are pretty sure they know where the black boxes are within a few kilometers. now, the head of the search party angus houston refused to confirm that today. he refused to go that far, saying that he had no major breakthroughs to report. but they are still searching 1,500 miles northwest of where we are standing right now in perth, australia. they will continue to listen,

continue to look out there. probably for the next few days, well into next week. and that's when they'll start deploying that underwater submarine. the unmanned submarine. bluefin-21, which will start scanning the ocean floor. natalie? >> katy tur in perth, australia. thank you. the suspect wanted in wednesday's hit-and-run crash at a daycare center is in custody. 28-year-old robert corchado turned himself in thursday afternoon. he's being held on $100,000 bond. police say corchado hit another vehicle with his suv, which then sent it crashing into the daycare center. the crash killed a 4-year-old girl and injured 11 children. 4-year-old lily quintus was sitting at a table waiting for a snack at the time. her mother describes her as beautiful, passionate and innocent. some new details this morning following that dramatic rescue of a kidnapping victim in atlanta. federal authorities are now saying a prison inmate used a smuggled mobile phone to direct the kidnappers. the victim, frank arthur janssen, is the father of a

prosecutor who helped put that inmate away. authorities said the kidnappers took a picture of janssen tied up in a chair and sent it to his wife and sent her a text message saying we will send mr. janssen back to you in six boxes if she went to police. five people were arrested following a late night raid wednesday by the fbi's elite hostage rescue team. hillary clinton had some luck on her side in las vegas thursday when a woman threw a shoe at her during a speech. take a look. this came just after clinton took to the stage at a solid waste management meeting in mandalay bay casino. the woman walked down the aisle and threw that shoe, but as you saw, missed the former secretary of state. she then turned around and ran for the exit. the woman was arrested, of course. this isn't the first time that a high-ranking political figure has been involved in a shoe incident. you recall in 2008, an iraqi journalist also threw a pair of shoes at president george w. bush at the time during a news conference in baghdad. and mrs. clinton had good reflexes and really quick on the

>> reporter: the ring leader convinced six others to join him. only two came along for the great escape. >> chimps are so smart. they live in this social group. hey, i found a way out. come join me. >> reporter: officials say the chimps did not escape into a public area and no one was in harm's way. >> i felt safe. we were pretty far away. >> reporter: as a precaution employees herded families in secure areas like bathrooms. >> they put us in the penguin exhibit. we had 40 people in there. >> reporter: after an hour and a half all chimps returned, lured to safety with malted milk balls. >> reporter: the primates will get the day off to think about what they did. zookeepers will scour the enclosure looking for anything else that might be used as an escape ladder. >> thank you very much. no, you figure out the log ladder thing, you don't fall for the malted milk balls.

good morning, it is 7:26. i'm laura garcia-cannon. northbound i-5 near chico still closed as investigators pick through what is left of a tour bus that crashed and caught on fire while carrying dozens of high school students. it happened in orland, just west of chico. southbound lanes of interstate 5 did reopen early this morning. a total of ten people are dead and 35 others are hurt. the tour bus carrying more than 40 high school seniors was making its way to humboldt state for a visit. chp will hold a press conference at 10:00 a.m. this morning. we'll continue to update you on the road conditions, as well, every half hour and we'll have a live report coming up on our 11:00 a.m. newscast this

savannah, we'll talk to you in a second. a tragic accident in california overnight involving a bus that was filled with high school students. it was hit by a fedex truck that crossed the median, killing eight passengers and both drivers. the alleged hit-and-run driver wanted in connection with a deadly accident at a daycare center in florida has now surrendered to police. the 28-year-old is being held on a $100,000 bond. australia's prime minister says crews searching for malaysia air flight 370 have zeroed in a much more targeted area in the southern indian ocean, but officials say a signal heard on thursday was not likely from the plane's data recorders. we'll have more on that. but first, let's begin this half-hour with day three of the prosecution's cross-examination of oscar pistorius. and there are signs that it's taking a toll on the olympic sprinter. jeff rossen is outside the courthouse in pretoria. jeff, good morning to you. >> reporter: hey, matt.

good morning to you. high drama in court today. the prosecutor, they call him the pit bull, caught oscar pistorius in several apparent mistakes, calling him a liar. at one point, the judge even stopped the trial to ask pistorius why he's making so many mistakes, and he was emotional again, too. the blade runner crying so much on the stand today, even that prosecutor grilling him said he's in distress. don't be fooled by the speed, says oscar pistorius. his disability makes him an easy target for thieves. testifying, he's been a victim of crime himself. it's a key element to pistorius's defense, that his fear that night caused him to shoot and kill his model girlfriend reeva steenkamp. but in court today, a revelation on cross-examination. >> did you ever go into a police station and complain about anything? >> no i did not, my lady. >> no burglaries or anything at your specific house? >> that's correct, my lady. >> reporter: the night of the shooting, pistorius claims he

didn't know reeva was in the bathroom when he heard a possible intruder, but he fired anyway. >> why would you arm yourself, rush towards the danger if you're not ready to shoot. >> my lady, i didn't have time to think. i was dealt with a situation which i had to protect reeva and i had to protect myself. >> it's not that easy. you cannot tell the court "i didn't think." you armed yourself and i'm sure you released the safety mechanism on your gun. >> that's correct, my lady. >> the fact of this matter is, if you stayed in this room, reeva would have been alive. those are the facts. >> my lady, if i stayed where i was, anything could have happened. somebody should have shot reeva. i wanted to put as much distance as i could between reeva and what i perceived to be the danger. >> reporter: the prosecutor also caught pistorius changing his story about shutting off his alarm system after the shooting. >> mr. pistorius, that is the problem with evidence.

you have to keep explaining. you are now in trouble, and now you just give an explanation that's nonsensical. >> reporter: you can see pistorius's lawyer rubbing his head today as his client blamed the mistakes on a lack of sleep. >> i'm going to be tired. i don't need time. i am tired. it's not going to change. i've admitted to making a mistake. >> reporter: that's when the judge had enough, and for the first time actually addressed pistorius herself. >> mr. pistorius, it's important that you should be all here when you are in that witness box. do you understand that? >> i do, my lady. >> so if you are tired, and the reason you're making all these mistakes is because you're tired, you must say so. >> i understand, my lady. >> reporter: like so many other days, pistorius broke down on the stand when asked about the placement of a fan in his bedroom that night. >> it's a difficult time for me

prosecutors cross-examinatiprosr s cross-examing a witness all the time. it seems in south africa, prosecutors have much more leeway with what they can do and say. >> he's allowed to out-and-out argue with oscar pistorius. your version is a lie! tell the truth! that would not be acceptable here in the u.s. you have to ask a question. >> is it that they just want to get under the witness's skin and rile oscar pistorius up? because some of the things he's saying seem to have nothing to do with the actual death of reeva steenkamp. >> look, this is not tea with the queen. this is a murder trial. the prosecutor is allowed to be very aggressive. he's trying to get any inconsistencies he can. and he's gotten some. >> there's another thing that's getting some attention. while he is being cross-examined, and i mean for days, oscar pistorius is supposed to have no contact with his own defense attorneys. what's the comparison there to the u.s. system? >> i like that rule, by the way. because he's not supposed to get coached by his attorney to come back the next day and change his testimony. >> but at the time you need an attorney the most, you're

allowed no contact with your attorney? >> you don't need an attorney when you're testifying. by the way, he's had over a year to prepare. he had a week off before he started testifying. he got to meet with his attorney then. here in the u.s., nobody's supposed to talk to you about your testimony while you're on the stand, including in the evenings during the break, but people do talk to their lawyers and because of the attorney-client privilege, nobody can talk about it. >> how credible do you think oscar pistorius has been on the stand so far? >> i think the prosecutor's got him on a couple of things. one is his minimizing his irresponsible behavior with guns. his insisting that reeva wasn't really afraid of him. and they've got a text saying that she was. >> you talk about irresponsible behavior with guns. you're referring to two previous incidents involving guns, and i'm curious, would those incidents be admissible under the u.s. system? >> i don't think they would. but that's because there's a jury, and we try to protect jurors from prior bad acts subject to a number of exceptions. but we want juries to decide the facts of this case and not look at prior acts. >> you say there's a jury here, there's no jury there. the judge decides. but with the assistance of two

you let that thing go. overnight in the fridge, flavors marry. strain it through a colander. making the matzo balls. light and fluffy. two secrets. one is we have eggs, matzo meal. you start to roll that. the secret it a light and flavor matzo ball and seltzer and then oil. what you do is put that in the fridge, mix it up, drop it in. beautiful. you let that go 30 minutes. these are done. >> okay. >> these are all rolls for you. >> yes. >> they go into your simmering soup and that will flavor your -- >> that's a huge matzo ball. >> i like baseball sized matzo balls so you did it well. >> fantastic. >> chicken soup can be an elegant thing to serve, right? julienned vegetables, matzo balls, chicken. don't underestimate the power of a little green, a little garnish. how fabulous is that? >> what is going on here?
