is show who they are from behind their daughter's eyes and this is what i did with this "strong mothers, strong sons" because mothers try so much to give so much to their kids. but so much what we give is the wrong stuff. i think we focus more on -- we dote on them too much, we want to make life easy for them, we want to fix all of their problems and heal all of their wounds, which is fine when they're 0 to 10. but 17 and 18, you can't do that. >> you said you have to let them go at 10. >> you do. that's the first separation when they're starting to go through puberty. not to let go completely, but back off -- boys at this point, here is this person i love and adore and we're close and cozy and life is wonderful and they wake up and go, wait a minute, now i'm a guy and she's a girl and it is a little creepy. >> but you don't go cold turkey. so what is a mom to do? what is the right way to add some distance without cutting off? >> the first thing they need to do is recognize how can we show

our boys affection without being overbearing? and i think we need to do that, we don't do things in public, for instance. don't run up to your son in the hallway at school and give him a hug and a kiss. >> in front of friends and everything give him an opportunity to find what decisions can he make, where he's going to succeed or fail. don't make all the decisions for him. >> i think we're doing them a favor and doing them such a disservice, aren't we? we're not preparing them for real life where people tell them no all the time. >> i think it is really important with young men, even more so than with young daughters. i think we emotionally cripple our boys when we do too much for them. but those of us who are very intense mothers, we adore our kids, we do so much for them far into their 20s, and we need to let them stand on their own, fall on their face, fail and figure out how to get through life again. >> you say normally sons push their moms away too. at what point do they go away and then circle back? >> when is that going to happen?

>> my son is just starting to like me again. right around 15, it was like what happened to -- >> i think 15 to 25 can be horrible years. but those are the years you need to pull back. we have to have their back. don't just throw them to all of their friends like to a pack of wolves, say do whatever you want to do. we always have their back and watch them carefully. we let them make decisions so they can fall and fail and learn to get back up. but usually in the mid-20s, i say you're not done raising your child until about 25. that's when you get what you wanted. the reward comes when their brain development is finally done at 25. and they're men. and that's when your relationship really becomes not just a mother/child, but more of a friendly relationship. >> my daddy used to say to me, honey, i love you too much to deny you the privilege of making mistakes. >> exactly. >> thank you so much. >> my mom was cool too but didn't say stuff like that. lovely to meet you.

>> next the parsley or the garlic. if i'm not feeling good, i'll put in a whole head. a whole head of garlic. >> okay. >> kosher salt. peppercorns. and allspice. really nice flavor. really nice flavor. this is a nice authentic chicken soup. >> how long? >> we want that to go a minimum two hours. you can go three hours, four hours. a great italian tomato sauce, you let that thing go. overnight in the fridge, flavors marry. strain it through a colander. making the matzo balls. light and fluffy. two secrets. one is we have eggs, matzo meal. you start to roll that. the secret it a light and flavor matzo ball and seltzer and then oil. what you do is put that in the fridge, mix it up, drop it in. beautiful. you let that go 30 minutes. these are done.
