low clouds this morning in san jose right now, mostly cloudy skies, spilling into the santa clara valley, 54 degrees and the marine layer which has helped to bring in some of the low clouds almost 3,000 feet deep this morning. the cooling reaching our inland valleys towards the tri-valley too. toward the afternoon we will see the temperatures begin to climb up, but maybe not as warm as you might expect. only near 70 in san jose today, out towards livermore and pleasonton, see low 70s this afternoon and low 60s around san francisco and speaking of san francisco, we'll be looking at our temperatures as the game gets started today just after 1:00. close to 60 today and then tomorrow, we'll see those temperatures climbing up into the low to mid 60s around san francisco as we start to see a bit of a warming trend for the second half of the weekend. around the bay area and beyond 65 with low clouds, mist around monterrey at times. lake tahoe 68. a slight chance of showers south of highway 50.

more about the weekend warmup arriving for tomorrow in your sunday forecast. a full look coming up in a few minutes. back to you. >> thanks, rob. we begin with breaking news in santa clara this morning. a crash, a gas leak and an evacuation. you can see skid marks there in the distance left by a driver who lost control and smashed between two homes rupturing a gas line. we can tell you neighbors are just starting to go back home after spending the last four or five hours out in the cold forced from their homes by that driver who smashed in between those two homes. pg&e finishing repair work on a broken gas line. santa clara police say the crash happened in the 400 block of kylie boulevard near the expressway and prune ridge avenue. neighbors say they heard a loud noise around 2:30 came out to find the car wedged between the two homes. kelly sherman who lives next door to the house says she also felt shaking. >> i did. i heard a loud screech and i jumped out of bed, called 911.

a young couple who were driving past stopped by and there were no injuries and we're thankful. >> shocking that there were no injuries. residents say that not only did they smell gas, but they also heard gas leaking from the meter. they say the home's gas line was ripped right off the pipe. crews are working to make sure there are no other gas leaks and residents are just starting to go back home this morning. what a wake-up call. and we turn to a developing story now, the deadly tour bus crash north of sacramento. ntsb investigators will continue to comb through the wreckage today looking for the reason why that fedex truck hit that tour bus in orland on thursday night. the big rig crossed the center divide and slammed head-on into that bus. witnesses say the fedex truck was already on fire before that collision. ten people were killed in the crash. five of them were high school

students. one issue the ntsb will look at will have to do with how the fire could have been stopped on board the bus. >> it's our top ten. our top ten transportation safety issues that's going to save lives and prevent injuries. fire safety is on that list. that is a concern across all modes, but in highway, it's all about things like motor coaches, wheel well fires, engine fires. >> the agency will also look at whether the stretch of interstate 5 where the bus was hit should have had a barrier along the median to prevent head-on collisions like that one. coming up in a few minutes a live report from outside enloe medical hospital where five of the victims are still being treated. we'll tell you what we know about who they are. the concord grandfather whose 2-year-old grandson was mauled to death by his three pit bulls was found guilty. prosecutors argued the man should have seen the attack coming. before the dogs killed high yash she's grandson in 2010 they killed two family pets and acted

aggressively towards the toddler. highyashi's sentencing is set for june. to continuing coverage of the leland yee scandal, the case against the susnded state senator and dozens of others is about to get bigger. prosecutors say more charges are looming and they plan on naming more defendants. among the possible new charges, racketeering which comes with a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison and hefty fines. racketeering charges also allow prosecutors to charge gang leaders with crimes they ordered other people to carry out. 29 people are already under indictment in this case including suspended state senator leland yee and former chinatown gans ster raymond chow. don't mess with mama, angry moms are calling for the shutdown of a south san jose day care center where they say the staff neglected their children. yesterday they picketed outside the de colores day care center.

the group which includes former teachers accuses the center of handling children aggressively, withholding food as punishment and hardly giving the children water. one mother says her daughter was forced to sit on the toilet for half an hour. the state is investigating de colores and found during inspections violations including unval fide staff with infants and too many children per staff member on duty. >> i find it heart breaking. i've been stressed over this. i want the kids out, this place shut down and do whatever i can until it's done. >> day care owner -- owner celia villa said in a statement we have already implemented the required changes and working with the licensing board to meet all requirements. several parents who spoke with nbc bay area say they have not experienced any problems at de colores. the day care center is hosting an open house on monday where administrators hope to meet with parents and answer any questions they might have.

49ers star colin kaepernick is finally commenting on that police investigation involving him in miami. detectives are trying to figure out exactly what happened at a miami condo last week. according to police reports, a woman told investigators she woke up in a hospital bed and that last thing she remembers is smoking pot and drinking with kaepernick and two other football players. on twitter the 49ers quarterback wrote, quote, i take great pride in who i am and what i do but i guess sometimes you have to deal with someone who makes things up. kaepernick also thanked his fans for their support and says their faith is not misplaced. well notice anything different? someone chipped off the gold medal tile on the tommie smith statute at san jose state university. campus police say this happened some time between wednesday night and thursday morning but don't have any leads on who defaced the statute. the statute depicts a silent protest by tommie smith and john

carlos during the olympic gais games. they raised their fists in a black power salute. police say this is the third time the statute has been vandalized. a new debate is shaping up in the race for sheriff in santa clara county and now effeconnec to the search for syria lamar. marc klaas blasted the sheriff yesterday, he talked about organizing civilian search efforts sands in a statement, quote, none of the numerous searchs we that we have engaged have ever been stonewalled by the law enforcement like the search for sierra lamar. crime victims united came out against the sitting sheriff. >> we do think kevin will be a stronger voice for victims rights. >> sheriff smith says that it is unfortunate marc klaas is misinformed about this subject. her campaign consultant said, quote, no individual has done more to protect the public from

and crashed into that bus head-on. five of the ten people killed were high school students. ntsb investigators will now look at what could have been done to stop the fire on board the bus. they will also look at whether there should have been a barrier or a median on that stretch of interstate 5. today in the bay's patrick healy live at enloe medical center in chico with the latest hopefully those victims doing better this morning, patrick? >> well, yes, and, in fact, kris, one of the students who was hurt thursday evening, was well enough to leave the hospital and go home last night. initially 11 were brought here. this was one of the major receiving hospitals from the accident. now nine have been able to leave. two remain in fair condition. they are expected to recover. now on to the investigation on this. new information that we've received late last night from the couple who were in the white rental nissan that was ahead of the charter bus as the fedex big rig came across the center divider. again what they told us that

they saw, flames coming from the big rig before that first impact with their car. >> looked to the left and there it was coming through right at me at an angle and i could tell that i wasn't going to outrun him. so i just kind of turned to the right and he hit me, you know, just like that. >> there's a little bit closer, you can see how it just kind of hit the front door, and then it ripped off the back door and then the back trunk is pretty much gone. >> it was in flames as it came through the median. >> it was already in flames? >> it was already in flames. it wasn't coming from the front in the engine. it was more from behind the cab. so i'm not sure where the flames were coming from. >> you think i'm dead, i'm dead. and when it swiped us we felt like we floated, kind of like floated off to the ditch over there, about 20 feet off, and we looked at each other, and literally at the same time we go, we're alive. that's the view behind us and

rarely apart but on this trip they chose to ride on separate buss. both sisters were accepted to several colleges but they wanted to go to the same school. they skipped their prom to take that tour of humboldt state together. also on board that bus, a couple engaged to be married. michael mcmyvet and madison haywood were on the trip as chaperones. this past christmas while in paris they got engaged. those who describe them say they were sweet, positive people who had a fairytale romance. >> michael was a loving young man. he had a million dollar smile. he always made sure that other people was taken care of first before he was. and always him and mattison, they said, they, to each other. >> the two were looking forward to starting a family together. myvet worked as a therapist for

autistic children. haywood was a student in a medical program. our investigative unit found that fedex freight which is a division of fedex, has been cited for more than 600 times, unsafe driving in the past two years. nearly half of those violations were for speeding. other violations include failing to obey traffic signals and improper lane changes. we also found that drivers were cited for using a cell phone or texting while driving. in the past two years, fedex has been involved in more than 700 crashes in the u.s., 43 of them happening here in california, resulting in two deaths. fedex released a statement saying they are fully cooperating with investigators. stay with nbc bay area for continuing coverage of the developing story. go to nbcbayarea.com for the latest updates. more ahead on "today in the bay." going home where they belong. the battle over precious

you are watching "today in the bay." good morning to you. looking live at a very dramatic picture from dublin. a little break in the low clouds this morning and in san rafael, just low clouds as far as the eye can see. some culturally significant paintings are on their way from the bay area to switzerland. they were painted by a well-known polish artist while living in san francisco. as "today in the bay's" joe rizzo jr. told us it took a little help from the fbi to get them on their way. >> reporter: was something of a national treasure in poland. she was a painter, a freedom fighter, and an escapee from a

concentration camp who settled in san francisco to paint. >> her paintings were very well done in oil and with gold trimmings. she was a perfectionist in a sense. >> reporter: angel lean said her longtime friend was an eclectic as colorful as her paintings. >> she had a tremendous sense of humor and even it's reflected in some of her paintings. >> reporter: before she died in 1998, she left instructions that 84 of her paintings were to be shipped to a polish museum in switzerland because at the time poland was under communist control. >> to my knowledge that was always her desire. it was supposed to go to poland. no question it was supposed to go to poland. >> reporter: the paintings never made it. ended up with family members and sort of disappeared. >> for a period of time it was unsure exactly where they were. people were looking for them without answers. >> reporter: the polish government alerted the fbi who sent agents to meet with the family member in santa rosa after a bit of gentle nudging 75

of her paintings were shipped to switzerland and arrived yesterday. >> this means for poland another series of paintings that have been hidden away for a good long time. >> reporter: since world war ii poland has struggled to reclaim its lost art treasures looted by the russians and nazis. >> poland is still missing 80,000 pieces. inventoried pieces. 80,000 are still missing. >> reporter: though this investigation didn't involve much sleuthing or raids or international intrigue, it was still a sense that a national treasure was finally close to home. nbc bay area news. >> that's pretty neat. check in with rob mayeda with a look at the weekend forecast which is perfect for painting a picture. >> we have pretty pictures outside around san jose, see some sun breaking through the low clouds, 54 degrees and a little more sunshine from emeryville around east bay looking back to san francisco. you can see some partly cloudy

skies and in san francisco right now, the tops of the buildings there, showing you the sunshine but lots of low clouds there out towards the coast. currently 53 degrees. so low cloud cover that has moved inland to dublin and parts of the tri-valley this morning. part of a marin layer that's about 3,000 feet thick. that has ramped up overnight and coupled with the all day sea breeze should leave our temperatures cooler than we saw yesterday especially for some of our inner most inland valleys around the tri-valley and closer to san jose. as we see the low clouds eventually breaking up by mid to late morning. for the sierra locations, south of highway 50 today, slight chance of some showers as an area of low pressure tracks through southern california and what you'll see during date today is the low clouds break up, you may notice some cloud buildups over locations closer to yosemite. hour by hour the low clouds break up around the central bay, patches of low clouds hanging on the coast. towards tonight and tomorrow morning low clouds surge back in. all the way to the sacramento valley for tomorrow morning.

one of the changes we're going to see is a system that triggered the sea breeze is going to start to move on. things have become cooler for now but they will begin to trend warmer as early as tomorrow as the area of low pressure begins to move on, tracking out of southern california, for two days, we'll get high pressure building back in so starting tomorrow, especially for the south bay valleys and areas towards pleasonton and livermore, see a warmup beginninsunday and probably peaking at some point monday as our inland temperatures make a run close to 80 degrees. next chance of rain, really nothing on the horizon. high pressure will start to weaken by wednesday and thursday that's going to allow our temperatures to cool down. as you see in the seven-day forecast, the storm track staying to the north as you approach easter weekend. it does look like we're going to be staying dry by this time next saturday and sunday as well. our temperatures today, with the onshore winds staying relatively cool, will be seeing numbers in the upper 60s to near 70 in san jose. low 70s around saratoga, mid 60s closer to the peninsula and you

see san francisco should be a fairly cool day with partly cloudy skies and highs near 60. for the north bay, near 70 napa, 68 santa rosa and you see the tri-valley for today climbing to the low 70s. we should see the numbers climbing into the upper 70s come tomorrow as we take a look at the forecast now, sunday, monday and tuesday, see the temperatures in the south bay warming up a few degrees, same story for the peninsula, sunday you see the numbers start climbing on up. even san francisco by monday should see upper 60s. warmest locations around pleasonton, close to 80 on monday but that's a two-day warmup beginning tuesday we will see the sea breeze pick up again cooling us off. the spring roller coaster ride of temperatures continues. coolest day of the weekend. tomorrow a little warmer for your outdoor plans. >> thank you very much. the housing market in the south bay is on fire. coming up on "today in the bay," real estate agents tell us they're witnessing something they've never seen before.

the bay." taking a look at this dramatic picture of san jose from the distance we see the sunshine cracking through the low clouds and from our emeryville camera the low clouds that are sitting right on top of san francisco this morning. well are you buying or selling a house right now? certainly lots of people are. the south bay housing market is so hot the bidding wars are more fiery than ever and this time there's something new. real estate agents say something is happening they've never seen before. sellers pulling their listings because they're afraid of being homeless. "today in the bay" shows us how hot the real estate market is what it means for sellers. >> it's a top floor unit. so this is a one bedroom condo in santa clara. >> reporter: at $428,000 this 900 square foot condo has been on the market 72 hours but the sellers have been getting multiple calls saying the same thing. >> i would like to make an offer

now. >> reporter: with the bay area market that continues to heat up, that doesn't surprise real estate agent lauren hailie. something else that happened that caught her off guard. a property one of her buyers was drds in got pulled off the market. she said her buyer made a bid for this townhouse listed at just under $1.2 million. it got 11 offers up to 20% above the asking price. >> in the 11th hour the sellers decided that they didn't want to sell after all and -- >> reporter: why? the seller's agent tells nbc bay area he got cold feet harboring mounting anxiety he and his family would be homeless, unable to buy themselves. >> i've actually run into this situation several times just since the first of the year. >> it's a vicious cycle where people see how hard it is to buy their next home and decide not to list their current home. >> reporter: glen, ceo of real estate brokerage company redfin says the south bay has continued to attract buyer interest, san

from nbc bay area, this is "today in the bay." good morning to you. the sun trying to peek through the clouds over san jose waking up dreary this morning. thanks so much for joining us. i'm kris sanchez along with meteorologist rob mayeda. isn't that a pretty picture? >> it is a pretty picture. the low clouds you're seeing right now in san jose, part of a marine layer that thickened up to about 3,000 feet overnight and right now 54 degrees in san jose. the view from emeryville showing a little more sunshine, looking back to san francisco there, partly cloudy skies, and as we take you over into san francisco right now, you see mostly cloudy skies to the west, 53 degrees. the giants flag there blowing atop the building as we have a 1:05 start time to the game today and it should be a cool one out there at at&t park. numbers close to 60 as we go through the afternoon but

faith is not misplaced. hitting the brakes on illegal street racing. hayward police launched an operation to stop what they say is a dangerous event. officers issued 178 citations in north hayward on thursday night. according to police, racing accelerates when the weather warms up. not only, though, puts the drivers at risk, officers say drivers lose control and sometimes veer into crowds. according to police, trash by the side of the road and tracks on the ground are evidence that a race has taken place. >> thankful. definitely thankful that they're protecting everyone. taking care -- there we go. perfect example. >> officers say illegal street racing fines can cost up to $1,000. new video this morning that may shed light on an arson at oakland children's hospital. oakland firefighters released this video surveillance of a man they describe as a person of interest. according to investigators, the

ntsb investigators are starting to scratch the surface of what caused that deadly crash north of sacramento. this morning, though, we are learning more about the victims. ten people died, many others were hurt. the crash happened on thursday about 100 miles north of sacramento on interstate 5. the tour bus was headed to humboldt state. we spoke with witnesses who say the fedex truck was already on fire when it crossed that median and smashed into that bus

"today in the bay's" patrick healy is live at enloe medical hospital in chico with the latest on the investigation. you said only two people remain in the hospital, patrick? >> that was one of the good developments. one of the students was able to be discharged, able to return home. this among all the hospitals that received the injuries and injuries went as far away as uc davis more than 100 miles away from here. 11 of them came here, nine have now been released with the final student, the most recent released last night. that student's name was not released. now let's move on to the investigation. the ntsb did get an investigator here from washington in time

yesterday morning to join the chp investigators when they were going over the accident scene. the wreckage was kept in i-5 until midday yesterday so they could do that investigation. afterwards so the highway could be reopened, they moved the wreckage to another location. they will try to go through it. they'll look for specific information. they will try to recover a tracking device from the fedex truck. the ntsb does say it is very likely that even if they can find it they will not be able to recover any data from it because the fire damage was so severe. now also late yesterday, the ntsb's mark rosekind laid out where they plan to focus. >> we're going to be looking at a lot of factors related to the human, that's everything from training to their medical conditions, their work/rest schedule over the last 72 hours. we're going to be looking at the machine, that's the vehicle, when were the last inspection, what kind of maintenance was there? again things about technology, an electronic control module we can look at?

the environment, that's not just the weather, that's going to be things like anything related to the design of the freeway. >> and mark rosekind, his personal expertise is in the area of human performance, how fatigue can affect performance. he laid out a broad area they're going to look at. the ntsb, we're familiar with it for investigating major aircraft, commercial aircraft collisions and fatalities, but the ntsb is also authorized to investigate other kinds of transportation accidents and they choose to do so where they see significance, where there are safety issues that the ntsb can pursue and make recommendations for changes to make the conditions in the future safer. so they are going to look at in this case, they are going to look at the safety of motorcoaches, busses, whether they can be made safer, whether egress, escape from the bus can be made easier. there were some students who said they had problems getting

weather this morning. low clouds spread out up to 3,000 feet thick this morning. good morning for dramatic sunny breaks around san jose. 54 as the planes fly by. the sunshine looking off to the east to downtown. emeryville, partly cloudy skies and right now temperatures there also in the mid 50s and let's take you over to san francisco where the giants' flag lit up by the sun light we have this morning, about 53 degrees. speaking of the giants forecast, thanks to the all day sea breeze today's game time temperature first pitch at 1:05, a cool 60 with partly cloudy skies. we will see these temperatures warming up for tomorrow's game. right now it's the combination of the low clouds and strong sea breeze, winds at times 25 miles per hour in fairfield that's pumping in the marin area into sacramento and stockton as you head through the afternoon. so rather than the drizzle we're seeing in the low clouds, no threat of rain for the bay area except if you head towards yosemite watch out for a slight chance of an afternoon thundershower as low pressure has moved into southern california which has helped to

trigger the stronger sea breeze for us this morning and through the day today. we will continue to see the areas of low clouds on the coast that will surge back inland overnight into tomorrow all the way into sacramento and stockton again. a healthy marine layer for tomorrow but tomorrow is going to be a little bit warmer, as high pressure begins to build in. the area of low pressure which is tracking through southern california will begin to scoot out by tomorrow morning. that's going to allow high pressure to build back in for a two-day warmup. this is going to be for sunday into monday. inland temperatures climbing up a little bit more. 70s to maybe close to 80 by monday for our valleys and then our temperatures will cool off once again as we head towards the beginning of next week. today with the all day sea breeze near 70 in san jose, mid 60s around the peninsula for san francisco we'll see highs near 60 for today. 70 in napa, east bay temperatures around oakland at 65. further inland the tri-valley looking good. low 70s today. today the cooler of the two weekend days as you can see in the three-day outlook, sunday's

and israel. paid for by special interest groups. groups buying access to the power of the public utilities commission. >> you are supposed to speak to senators about the safety of your puc. instead you spent your day here in napa. >> no, that's not true. >> reporter: our reports also questioned michael peevey's decision to ignore a request to talk to state senators last year and instead spend date in napa with one of the special interest groups that funds many of his trips outside the country. you spent time with the utilities you're paid to regulate. >> there's no utilities that i know of. >> pg&e was here. >> maybe one person. >> reporter: the question centers on buying influence, creating an appearance of a cozy relationship with the utility, california, taxpayers pay him to regulate. >> sb 831 aims to refocus public officials on their jobs. not their frequent flyer accounts. >> reporter: senator hill was supported by utility watchdog group clurn for calling for

limits on the amount of travel elected officials can receive. records show since 2003 he has accepted more than $230,000 in trips and gifts and traveled out of his office more than 200 days. >> there's one thing to throw a watchdog a bone and it's another thing to throw a watchdog filet mignon and that is what is happening with these trips. >> mr. peevey is aware he has been criticized for these trips and hasn't changed. >> that's an arrogance and the feeling that certainly he's comfortable in his job but that job ends the end of this year. >> reporter: mr. peevey was not available to comment on the proposed change in the ethics law. his spokesperson said the trips and travel allow the exchange of knowledge and in full compliance with state rules, rules senator hill clearly wants changed. the question, will the senator's elected colleagues in sacramento approve a change in ethics laws
