good morning. i'm frances rivera. we begin on this monday morning with a brazen tragedy on the eve of passover. a gunman opened fire at two jewish centers near kansas city, killing three people. among the dead, a 14-year-old eagle scout and his grandfather. here's what we know right now. the suspect, 73-year-old frazier glenn cross is under arrest. law enforcement officials tell nbc news he's a former ku klux klan leader. jay gray brings us the latestment. >> reporter: three people are dead after shots rang out on the eve of passover at two jewish community sites at a kansas city suburb. >> there is no other word to describe it, just panic. >> reporter: investigators say a man armed with multiple weapons opened fire at a jewish community center and then moments later at a retirement home. >> several shots were fired at that location and witnesses stated that the suspect left the location soon after. several minutes later we received a call from a second

location of shots fired at village shalom retirement center. >> reporter: the shooting spree started as dozens were gathering for a singing competition at the community center. >> just rushed in the theater. we thought it was weather at first. >> people ducking down under tables and yelling at us to get inside. >> reporter: a man in his 70s is being held by police, someone they describe as a person of interest. >> we have a suspect and yet i would caution everybody to understand suspects are not convicted. suspects are people of interest. >> reporter: witnesses say he was shouting an anti-semitic phrase from inside a patrol car after his arrest. >> we're investigating it as a hate crime, we're investigating it as a criminal act. we haven't ruled out anything. >> reporter: mindy corporon lost her father and son in the massacre. >> we all grieve in different ways. and i want to tell people thank you. >> reporter: this community now begins one of its most sacred holidays in unthinkable pain. jay gray, nbc news.

there are new developments this morning, the search for a missing flight 370. for the first time crews will send a robotic submarine deep into the indian ocean. its mission is to determine whether there is previously detected underwater signals are from the missing jet's black boxes. it can create a 3-d sonar match and chart any debris found on the sea floor. >> i would caution you against raising hopes that the deployment of the autonomous underwater vehicle will result in the detection of the aircraft wreckage. it may not. however, this is the best lead we have and it must be pursued vigorously. >> officials are also investigating an oil slick found near the detected pings. crews have collected the sample, but it will take several days to analyze. flight 370 disappeared on march 8th when 239 people on board. ukraine is teetering on the

brink. a stark statement at an emergency security council meeting last night. tensions escalated sunday when pro russian militants took control of government buildings in eastern ukraine. let's get right to nbc's danielle lee in washington. good morning. tell us exactly what is at stake here. >> reporter: hi, frances, good morning. we're talking about the future of an entire country. and if ukraine does dip into an all-out war, that's going to have implications all around the world. right now, the u.s. is trying to use whatever means it can diplomatically to stop any more violence. in ukraine this morning, rival clashes continue. towns to the east are bracing for military action. pro russian separatists have taken control of key buildings in several towns and are defying government orders to pull back or face ukrainian troops. >> the security council is called to order. >> reporter: the violence prompted an emergency u.n. security meeting last night. the obama administration is

accusing russia of escalating the crisis. >> we are beaing bombarded by russian disinformation and propaganda while the ukrainians are being confronted with incitement and violence. >> it has all the telltale signs of crimea, professional, coordinated. >> the authorities do not want to listen to those who do not accept the imposed dominance in kiev of national radicals. >> reporter: the u.s. is trying to help diplomatically. jack lew is preing paring to ta about aid later today. sanctions have been hurting russia's stocks. but senator john mccain says the u.s. must go further. >> we ought to at least, for god's sake, give them some weapons, weapons with which to defend themselves. >> reporter: that's now under consideration as experts worry you cr ukraine could be getting

dangerously close to a regional war. obama administration is threatening more sanctions on russia on energy, banking and mining. frances. >> danielle lee from washington, d.c., thank you. now to the deadly wildfires in chile that have devastated the pacific coast city of valparaiso. firefighters are battling lingerering hot spots from the blaze that erupted saturday afternoon. flames leaped from hill top to hill top in the city, killing at least 12 people and destroying more than 2,000 homes. more than 10,000 people were forced to evacuate. now makeshift shelters in santiago, the capital city, are taking in the newly homelessment on sunday, firefighters took to the air, dropping water from planes and helicopters to contain the blaze. neighborhoods on six densely populated hill tops have been reduced to ashes. the president toured the damage calling it a tremendous tragedy and claiming it could be the worst fire in the city's history. a fiery bus crash in southern mexico has killed at least 36 people. according to the state

government, a passenger bus en route to mexico city slammed into a broken down truck and burst into flames sunday. the bus was consumed by fire, burnt so badly that the only metal frame and parts of the wheel remain. four people survived the crash with injuries. extreme weather wreaked havoc across several communities. saturday, over 60,000 lost electricity when strong winds downed power lines. falling trees crushed cars and damaged several houses. a small plane was up ended. no serious injuries or deaths were reported. nbc's birthday boy, bill karins, has your monday forecast. what a birthday weekend for you, happy birthday, we have some -- >> like 75 at my house all weekend long. that was nice. winds were horrible in the midwest and lucky no fatalities. we haven't had any tornado fatalities. that's good. we're doing all right. in west, we started out with a little wet weather as we went throughout the begin of april.

now it dried out. a beautiful day yesterday. temperature was 67 in l.a., a little cool. 71 in san francisco. gorgeous. 79 in medford. as we look at the storm in the midwest, we're left with a pretty nice monday. not too many weather concerns, maybe some low clouds. this is the april rainfall totals. the reason i'm bringing this up is that i don't know if we'll add much to this, especially in the drought areas from southern oregon, all the way down to nevada and also into arizona and california. over next ten days, our long range computers aren't pegging much rain at all, maybe a drip or two. in other words, looks like the end of our rainy season has arrived. forecast for today, a nice monday, a warm monday in l.a., 84. vegas, 78. enjoy.

welcome back. on this monday, new details continue to emerge in the investigation into the fiery bus crash in california that left ten people killed. the ntsb says there were no skid marks left by the fedex truck that slammed head on into the bus. that means the driver never hit the brakes. investigators are trying to figure out if the driver fell asleep or possibly suffered a health problem. reports of the fedex truck being engulfed in flames before it hit

the bus are disputed by miles hill who was sitting right behind the bus driver. >> it was in perfect condition. it exploded upon impact of the bus. it was not on fire at all. >> the ntsb is revisiting proposals to improve passenger safety on buses in light of the tragedy. a woman believed to have given birth to several babies before killing them is now in police custody. authorities in utah say megan huntsman gave birth to seven babies between 1996 and 2006 and then killed at least six of them before storing them in boxes in her home. the police captain in the case called it, quote, emotionally draining. a woman who was attacked by a bear in florida has been released from the hospital after receiving 30 staples to her head. her husband described the scary ordeal. >> the bear actually had my wife's head in his mouth and started to drag her toward the woods. the bear's jaws let her head

loose and then started on her arm, she said. >> what an awful thing to see. officials with the fish and wildlife conservation commission killed four bears sunday. unclear if any of them were involved in that attack. a decidedly subdued looking pope francis marked palm sunday with a service for 100,000 people in the vatican. the pontiff did perk up later, though, taking holy selfies. look at that. time to get down to business. we send it over to cnbc's sima modi. >> get set for sticker shock the next time you fire up the grill. average beef prices hit $5.28 a pound in february. the highest since 1987. that's due to smaller cattle herds and a surge in demand for u.s. fees over beef. some are cutting steak portions to offset prices. the irs expects to receive 125 million e-filed returns this year. it is cheaper for uncle sam. it costs the irs 15 cents to

the weather looks pretty nice. i don't think anybody needs the umbrella today throughout the west or the inner mountain west. a little cool light jacket will do in many areas. the afternoon hours, you'll carry it home, for medford, southward, bakersfield, san francisco, all the way down to san jose, l.a. looking really warm, warmer than yesterday, around 84 degrees. tomorrow when we begin the on shore flow to the northwest. looks like it will be with us for much of the upcoming week. we have showers in the forekaca, late afternoon tomorrow. not going to be a lot of rain, but as i mentioned, kind of more cloudy, today is definitely the best day to get your sun and get outside. temperatures aren't too chilly in seattle. more of the dreary type weather. >> at least that can be five days of clouds. so the one of sunshine, we'll take it. >> your glass is half full. >> always half full. got to keep it positive. what line do you think harrison ford gets asked to quote the most? >> get off my plane. >> is that what you guessed?
