4:31 am
>> we do have serious news to get to. report of a car fire coming through 80 right at barrett avenue on the off ramp and i'm still getting information about this. apparently, some folks had too good of a weekend overnight. on 880 we have three separate accidents, this is really a trouble spot this morning. one at auto mall and the second right at a street coming through hayward and this is really a trouble spot. three separate accidents on the map coming through fremont and hayward. take it easy out there this morning. again, just a few lingering accidents on those roadways and fire coming through the bay bridge approach and we'll get more information coming up in just a little while. ladies, back to you. >> anthony, sounds good, thank you so much. breaking news in redwood city. police are collecting evidence at the scene of a deadly crash overnight. a man was hit and killed right near the intersection of middlefield road and pacific avenue just before 2:00 this
4:32 am
morning. now, this is not too far from fair oaks elementary school. right now all lanes reoepened and the coroner is on scene and the driver stayed at the scene and is cooperating with police. at 4:32, crews are still on scene this morning. keeping an eye out for flair ups. after flames tore through the former kntv studios yesterday. the building on park avenue and montgomery near downtown san jose has been abandoned for the past several years, but firefighters say homeless people were living inside. "today in the bay" bob redell is at the scene. there was quite the set up insi inside the building. >> these people who were transients, possibly as many as 30 really made themselves home inside this vacant building which was our old tv studio. fire department told us they pulled out barbecue grill, moijs, quite an eelaborate cisep
4:33 am
inside the building when it caught fire. based on interviews, the fire department does believe everybody got out okay. once the sun comes up firefighters will go in and do a search. they're in there right now making sure nothing flares back up. a very large fire and required a lot of backup to fight. the fire department called for a fifth alarm and they needed so much water they had to call the water company to increase the pressure. >> one part where it there was this pressure that came out of the building and it just turned into this little tornado and it was rushing towards everyone that was standing on the block and just moved them out because the debris was so sharp. it was like cutting you. >> this fire was very hot. we could feel the radiating heat from across the street. the power lines and phone lines were burning and a lot going on in the first 10 or 15 minutes of this fire. >> fire started around 3:00
4:34 am
yesterday afternoon and took about 100 firefighters just under 2 hours to get this under control. as i mentioned, still out here this morning. you look live on the back side of the old tv studios. you can see why they're already out here. you have some flame and some smoke. they're trying to keep an eye on the structure. they don't want anything to flare back up and really catch fire again. that's why they have a small crew out here and, again, the idea is once the sun comes up, if they weren't able to do it last night, which i doubt they were, just because it was dark out. they will go in to make sure everyone did get out. they interviewed the transients and they wanted to make 100% certain. by the way, montgomery and park is shut down and a couple lanes right up against the old building. if you have business through here, you just might have to find a little extra detour. laura, peggy. >> gosh, bob, both of us spent many years in that building, hard to look at this morning. >> you think of the history and its age and you think back in the '60s when the record hop was
4:35 am
being produced out of this building which, of course, was a local american band stand that history followed by many years of local news broadcasts. >> we'll check in with you throughout the morning. >> kntv opened its doors at that location back in 1955. many current and former employees reminiscing about the old studio and the history there. the old building was actually a bakery before it became kntv. old logos and old pictures, as well. brent and i on set. the city actually purchased that building and still owns it in hopes of building a major league baseball field in its place. maggie spent many years on the anchor desk in the old studio and said this is not how she wanted to see that building go down. >> so many people in the news business in the bay area came through that building and either learned their craft or came from another market to kntv and
