7:00 am
all cwe're back at 7:25 wit live local news update. driven by hate? while the threat moves east this morning. into the deep. a dramatic shift in the search for flight 370. searchers deploy a submarine for the first time in an area so remote they're calling it entirely new to mankind. and boiling over. a newly aggressive oscar pistorius spars with the prosecution about details of that fateful night. >> being argumentative is not
7:01 am
good for your credibility. >> today, monday, april 14th, 2014. >> from nbc news, this is "today." with matt lauer and savannah guthrie. live from studio 1a in rockefeller plaza. >> good morning, everyone. welcome to "today" on a monday morning. i'm savannah guthrie. >> i'm carson daly alongside natalie morales and dylan dreyer. both matt and al are both off today. >> i think we have a band here. carson and the ladies. >> trust me, i win in that scenario. >> good to have you here. we've got a lot of news to get to this morning. including today's top story. the deadly shootings at two jewish centers near kansas city. officials are telling nbc news this morning the 73-year-old suspect is a former ku klux klan leader with a history of anti-semitism. let's get to nbc's ron allen. he's got the latest this morning. ron, good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning to you, savannah.
7:02 am
police are investigating these murders as possible hate crimes because the gunman attacked right in the heart of this area's jewish community. three people are dead and everyone is wondering here why and how such heinous violence could erupt here. last night as mourningers gathered, a dramatic moment when one stepped forward just hours after losing two people she dearly loved. >> i am the daughter of a gentleman who was killed and a mother of a son who was kill ed. >> he was her father, and another her son. >> reporter: earlier in the day frantic calls alerted police. reports of a man opening fire in two locations in this quiet suburb of of kansas city.
7:03 am
the parking lot of the jewish community center. >> we were walking to the parking lot, and then we just rushed in the theater. we thought it was weather at first. >> there were people ducking down under tables and yelling at us to get inside. >> reporter: dozens stayed locked down inside for more than an hour. outside, dr. william lewis corporan, a well-known physician, was shot d killed. his 14-year-old grandson reat griffin underwood, high school freshman and eagle scout, was rushed to a hospital. he died there. minutes later, a few blocks away, more gunfire. this time outside the village shalom retirement community. a woman not identified by authorities was killed there. >> there's no other words to describe it, just panic. >> reporter: the alleged gunman arrested in a local schoolyard is 73-year-old frazier glenn cross jr. from southwestern missouri. a former ku klux klan leader, a history of anti-semitic and racist activities, including radio ads during a failed bid for the u.s. senate in 2010 deemed so offensive, broadcasters fought to keep them off the air. there's no indication cross,
7:04 am
allegedly armed with a shotgun, knew any of the victims. he reportedly smiled and yelled "heil hitler" once in custody. the alleged gunman is expected to face charges later in court today. the event was described as cowardly, unspeakly and president obama expressed his condolences. >> it's just awful. thank you. another big story this morning, dangerous spring storms. a powerful system that produced tornados, hail and heavy rain across the nation's midsection is moving east. nbc's joe fryer is in lovelady, texas, north of houston. joe, good morning. >> reporter: the sheriffs department believes a tornado did touch down in lovelady, texas. the worst of the damage here. giant trees were uprooted. some landing on a mobile home. a woman was inside there at the time. she was pulled out and taken to the hospital with only cuts and bruises and should be okay.
7:05 am
this is just a taste of the damage caused by wild weather throughout the southern and central u.s. as a twister moved closer to lovelady, texas, those nervously watching couldn't help but notice its size. >> it got bigger. >> reporter: before long, it destroyed three mobile homes, sending one woman to the hospital. the weather caused problems across the south, from downpours in arkansas, to twisters in oklahoma, a state that had gone nearly 250 days without a tornado, almost breaking a record. >> you can see some heavy rain in the air. you're seeing some hail mixed in there. >> reporter: cameras also caught what appears to be a gustnado, a low-rotating vortex weaker than a tornado, but still capable of causing damage. pounding hail also left its mark across the country's midsection as severe storms hit the midwest, ripping up the landscape, especially in michigan. >> before i knew it, about 60 seconds, man, it was -- it came through and blew my fence down, messed my garage door up.
7:06 am
>> reporter: wind gusts reaching as high as 80 miles an hour, strong enough to peel the roof off this high school gym and flip small airplanes. two men survived after a tree fell on their golf cart and a family narrowly escaped their home, now buried in a massive pile of fallen branches. this morning, as the spring storms move east, forecasters say the risk of tornado should drop, but extreme weather still remains a threat. back here in lovelady, texas, in addition to the damage to mobile homes, a school here also suffered some minor damage. now that the worst of the weather has moved out of this area, many in the central part of the country are bracing for a drastic drop in temperature. carson? >> all right, joe fryer, thank you for that. so where is the biggest weather threat today? dylan dreyer is in for al. good morning. >> good morning. today the threat is along the gulf coast. we have this tornado watch area that is shrinking right just to the northwest of jackson, mississippi.
7:07 am
you can see we do have some really heavy downpours here. but from eastern texas all the way over into the panhandle of florida, including alabama, this is the area today where we could see especially large hail, damaging wind gusts and an isolated tornado. the tornado threat is not really as large today, but we do still have your flash flood watches and even right around jackson, mississippi, a flash flood warning. those torrential downpours can cause flooding in an instant, so that's something we have to watch because the potential is there for one to two inches of rain. and then as we go into tuesday, it works its way up the east coast and even up into the northeast. this is a powerful cold front that will produce about one to two inches of rain in the northeast as well. the severe threat diminishes as we go into tomorrow, but this afternoon we certainly have to keep an eye out for some of those very strong storms, especially early afternoon today. savannah? >> all right, dylan, thank you we've got some new developments in the search for malaysia air flight 370. officials say they have not heard any new pings from what might be the plane's data recorders in at least six days. so now for the first time, an underwater vehicle is being
7:08 am
deployed to search. nbc's katy tur has the latest from perth, australia, this morning. katy, good morning. >> hey there, savannah. i wouldn't call this a last-ditch effort, but they're definitely nearing the end of their options here. entering a new phase today, scaling back on the visual efforts above the water as well as the audio efforts below the water, instead trying to focus on seeing beneath the waves. six days with no new acoustic signals, and ocean shield is swapping out ears for eyes, pulling up its pinger locator and deploying bluefin-21, the unmanned submarine to scan the ocean floor in smaller, more manageable sections. >> this will be a slow and painstaking process. >> reporter: after a weekend of listening and hoping for more pings, a more somber angus houston announced the decision to move forward. >> i would caution you against raising hopes that the deployment of the autonomous underwater vehicle will result
7:09 am
in the detection of the aircraft wreckage. it may not. >> reporter: it will take two hours for bluefin-21 to get to the bottom of the ocean. nearly three miles down. once there, it will work for 16 hours, moving like a lawn mower, up one stretch and down another as it creates a 3-d map of the sea floor. >> these are some good indications that we have, and we're going to pursue those indications. but, you know, people need to realize that these searches typically unfold over months and years, certainly not hours and days. >> reporter: more than a month in and still no sign of wreckage. though today planes focus on an area just down sea of the search zone where ocean shield discovered an oil slick. back on land in beijing, families of passengers are still waiting, refusing to consider flying to perth until there is evidence. >> they might be alive, they might be dead. there are all kinds of possibilities. >> reporter: bluefin-21 is quite a big process. two hours to get down, 16 hours
7:10 am
to scan, two hours back up, and four hours to analyze all that data. that's a full 24 hours, full day before they can find out what bluefin-21 saw. now, as for the oil slick, it is getting analyzed as well, but experts say it's unlikely it will have anything to do with the plane. >> all right, katy tur with the latest from perth this morning. thank you. let's go to ellen prager. she's a marine scientist and president of earth to ocean, which educates the public. good morning to you. >> good morning. >> so we now have these four solid pings. they've narrowed the search area to i think a size of about los angeles, about 500 square miles. i know it's not ideal. they'd like a smaller area. but is this doable for that mini sub, the bluefin-21? >> well, for this autonomous underwater vehicle, it's certainly doable. the only issue is going to be time. it takes time to map the seabed. so they can definitely do it. it's a little bit on the edge of the depth capabilities. but it can do it.
7:11 am
>> let's look at a couple things. first of all, what is this technology? how exactly does it map the ocean floor? >> right. well, they will essentially send the auv down and it will guide or be powered over the sea floor and send pulses of sound down and then it will record the echoes. the echoes that are strong will give you something that's sort of light or sticking up from the sea floor, and the echoes that are weak or shadows or low spots, and then in a computer they will process all that information and you essentially get a map of the sea floor. and then what you do is you look for something that doesn't look natural. you're looking for something that doesn't look like a rock or the sea floor, and then they're going to go investigate that further. >> and that leads me right to my question, because how can you distinguish the terrain down there, the topography in the ocean in that area is kind of rugged. could you mistake rugged terrain for something sharp-angled that you might suspect to be plane
7:12 am
wreckage? >> well, that's a great question. and that's one of the problems. they're going to have to go down and see what the bottom topography looks like, and hopefully there will be enough silt and things that it won't have covered any wreckage if it's there and you'll get things that have angles that just don't look natural. but it's not an easy task. >> very quickly, you mentioned this. this bluefin-21 mini sub is at the limits of what it can do in terms of depth, almost three miles down. so what problems might that raise? >> well, the problems with depth -- i mean, once you get down that deep in the ocean, the pressures are crushing. so they have to worry about problems mechanically with the bluefin-21. can it withstand those sort of pressures? so if it's on the edge, it should be okay. but you have to worry about starting to get technical problems when you get too deep. >> thank you, always good to get your perspective. appreciate it. natalie's here with frightening moments for passengers on a southwest airline's flight. >> that's right. good morning, guys. the southwest airlines flight on
7:13 am
its way from chicago to sacramento sunday had to make an emergency landing in omaha, nebraska, because of an unruly passenger. other passengers captured the incident on their cell phones and our affiliate kcra got a hold of it. >> reporter: it's what so many travelers fear, a fellow passenger getting out of control midair. >> all of a sudden we heard a woman scream way in the back. >> reporter: witnesses say their heard frantic yelling on southwest flight 722 from chicago to sacramento, with 139 passengers and crew onboard. >> we saw the stewardess rush to the back, and there was all sorts of commotion. >> reporter: that commotion was a man trying to open the rear door of the plane. >> i mean, you just kind of got that bad feeling that something wasn't going right, especially when a bunch of big guys got up and jumped into the aisle immediately and ran towards the
quote
7:14 am
back of the plane. >> reporter: one of those men, dr. scott porter, first thought it was a medical emergency, but soon realized it was a threat. >> we basically tackled the guy who was back there and pinned him down. >> reporter: air marshals restrained the man for the rest of the flight, then escorted him off the plane. as they drove him away, those onboard started clapping. >> this is one time where i might sound a little sexist, but i'm glad there were some burly men on the plane, because they really did what was great. ukraine's acting president is threatening military action this morning after pro-russian militias took over government buildings there. nbc's ayman mohyeldin has the latest. >> reporter: pro-russian separatist militias have again taken over a police station, this time in a city in donetsk. it's seven days in a row where these pro-russian militias, well-armed with military precision in very crisp uniforms that many believe say are backed by russia, that they've been able to take over these buildings and that has pushed the country into a very difficult position.
7:15 am
the ukrainian government has given an ultimatum for them to lay down their weapons and leave these buildings, or risk having the armed forces come in and use force to clear them out. the problem in doing so, it could possibly provoke russia, which has 40,000 soldiers on the border. natalie? >> thank you, ayman mohyeldin. firefighters in chile are struggling to contain a massive fire that has killed 12 people there and destroyed 2,000 homes. officials thought the fires were contained sunday morning, but strong winds fanned the flames in the afternoon. some 10,000 people have been forced to evacuate the area. more than 500 people were treated at hospitals, mostly from smoke inhalation. and golfer bubba watson finding room in his closet for a second green jacket this morning after winning the masters on sunday for the second time in three years. watson shot a final round 69 at augusta national to win the tournament by three shots. in addition to the famed green jacket, watson also pockets more
7:16 am
than $1.6 million for the win. and it's always a perfect fit, notice that? it's like the tailors are right there. >> yeah, exactly. masters casual. natalie, thank you. miss dylan, busy day in the middle of the country. >> yeah, just like yesterday. we're going to see another round of very strong storms. this cold front has a history of producing golf ball sized hail. we saw that in texas and oklahoma yesterday. also up into kansas. we are going to see that threat spread a little further to the east today. you see in red from eastern texas, right over into the panhandle of florida. we're not going to see the threat of tornados, those would be very isolated, but it's again for the hail and the damaging wind gusts. on the backside of it, we're looking at snow. chicago could see a wintery mix today. that's a look at the weather across the country. your local forecast is coming up in just 30 seconds. e sure your s fit your goals --

7:31 am
former ku klux klan leader. an unruly passenger forced a crew of a southwest airlines flight from chicago to sacramento to make an emergency landing in omaha, nebraska. witnesses say the man tried to open an exit door mid-flight before he was tackled and detained by fellow passengers. crews are using a sub today for the first time in the hunt for flight 370. it will use sonar to map the search area at the bottom of the indian ocean and will chart any possible debris. and coming up, the hunt for a bear who attacked a florida woman in her own driveway over the weekend. that survivor shares her harrowing story exclusively with us. and did he accidentally tip his hand? we're live at buckingham palace with new royal baby speculation set off by prince william himself on his family trip down under. >> we'll get to that in a couple of moments, but let's begin this half-hour in south africa at the murder trial of oscar pistorius. he is beginning a second week on the stand. and once again, exchanges with the prosecution have been
7:32 am
heated. "today's" national investigative correspondent jeff rossen is at the courthouse for us once again. jeff, good morning. >> reporter: hey, savannah, good morning. welcome to a new week and that means new drama in court. these two men are locked in a bitter battle with everything on the line. we're watching it all happen. a delicate dance of semantics and name calling and traps. the prosecutor is trying to wear oscar pistorius down, and really tear his story apart. this morning, clear signs it may be working with pistorius making more mistakes while crying and screaming on the stand. oscar pistorius still has his fans. >> we love you! >> reporter: showing up today with trophies, balloons, even hugs for the man himself. why do you support oscar pistorius? >> because, he is a hero. he's my hero. >> reporter: inside the courtroom, he broke down today. >> i did not fire at reeva! >> reporter: and the prosecutor pounced. >> your version is so improbable
7:33 am
that it cannot be reasonably possibly true. >> reporter: pistorius's version, he shot and killed reeva steenkamp by accident, that he heard a noise in the middle of the night, thought it was an intruder, and grabbed his gun. >> i screamed, i said get the [ bleep ] out of my house. get the [ bleep ] out of my house." >> reporter: but prosecutors call that a fabrication, exposing more inconsistencies in his story today. last week, he testified when he heard the possible intruder, he whispered to reeva to call the cops. today his version changed. >> i didn't whisper, my lady. >> if somebody would say that you whispered, that person would be lying. >> that's right, my lady. >> you know who that person is? because somebody said it. >> no, my lady. >> it's you. you said it. >> then i made a mistake, my lady. >> and there's more. pistorius says he and reeva went
7:34 am
to sleep by 10:00 p.m. but her autopsy shows she ate food hours later, around 1:00 a.m., and must have been awake. >> mr. pistorius, this particular point i put to you is devastating for your version because it cannot -- it's an objective set of facts and it cannot fit into your version. >> i don't have an explanation for the questions he's putting to me. >> reporter: the prosecution theory, he shot her because they were fighting. they say reeva was a neat freak. so why were her jeans laying on the bedroom floor? it's proof the prosecutor says she was trying to get away from pistorius in a hurry. >> she wanted to leave. and you weren't sleeping. you were both awake. >> that's not correct, my lady. it's untrue. >> and that there was an argument. >> that's not true, my lady. >> reporter: how damaging is this for oscar?
7:35 am
>> oscar being caught lying whilst testifying is deadly for him. >> reporter: even while they're small details? >> they might seem small, but the judge will consider that at the end of the matter when she considers the bigger issues and his credibility. >> reporter: for the prosecution, this cross-examination extremely important. that's why it's going on so long. yes, pistorius admits to shooting and killing reeva, but remember, police have no hard evidence that they were fighting that night or what they were even fighting about. it is just a theory they need to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that he wanted to kill who was behind that door, whether it was reeva or the intruder. legal experts say this is not a slam dunk for either side yet, guys. >> all right, jeff rossen at the courthouse. thank you very much. let's get a check of the water from dylan, who's in for al. >> it's nice on the east coast, but it's not going to last. we will see the potential for very cold temperatures working their way east. it comes with a cold front that yesterday produced some severe storms down through texas into oklahoma, and then it ended off as snow, especially back through nebraska. you can see some of our heaviest
7:36 am
rain right now is sitting down through the gulf coast states and that's where our biggest threat of strong storms will be today. you can't miss where that cold front is out ahead of it this morning. these are current temperatures in the 60s. back behind it, we're well down into the 20s. we could see record cold temperatures in parts of texas tonight into early tomorrow morning. high temperatures still close to 80 degrees on the east coast. this afternoon, we are looking for temperatures to be about 20 degrees below normal, and watch how this cold air starts to spread eastward. tomorrow, chicago tops out around 42. cincinnati 44. still 71 in washington, d.c. but then the cold air makes its way into the northeast by wednesday. syracuse, a high of only 36 degrees, but eventually temperatures will start warming up back across texas. so we'll bottom out at record lows tomorrow morning and then get back 7:36. happy monday morning to you. not too cold out there. we're at 56 degrees, for example, in mountain view. san francisco waking up with 53 degrees and a foggy sky
7:37 am
overhead. as we head throughout the day today, this isn't going to last long. in fact, i think by 10:30 a.m., mostly clear conditions here in the city by the bay, although we will see plenty of cloud cover in places like pacifica and daly city until 11:00 a.m., 11:30. sea breeze settles in and tomorrow cooler day and temps today in the 80s. and of course, you can keep track of your forecast 24 at weather channel or weather.com. weather channel, weather.com. one of those. >> we got it. >> google it. thank you, dylan. appreciate it. now to a terrifying bear attack in an unlikely place, a suburb of orlando. a black bear mauled a mother in front of her own home. she shared her story exclusively with nbc news. here's nbc's janet shamlian. >> reporter: terri frana is recovering from a nightmare this morning. >> i saw this large bear charging at me. >> reporter: confronting five bears in her driveway and garage, she hardly had time to
7:38 am
think. >> she opened her jaw and clamped down on to my head and i could just hear her teeth marks going through my scalp. >> reporter: terri thought about her children and prayed. >> i thought, please, my kids need me. >> reporter: bears interacting with humans is not uncommon in this unscapscale orlando suburb which is right next to a state nature preserve. >> you can't disrespect the bears, it's their neighborhood. >> reporter: according to an analysis by the "orlando sentinel," reports of bears coming in contact with people and property have more than doubled in the last five years in central florida. from just under a thousand in 2009 to more than 2,200 last year. last night, even as florida wildlife officials set traps, tranquilizer guns ready, bears could be seen wandering through the subdivision. one was shot by a game warden
7:39 am
