she's doing this alternative r&b thing. and then stacia is in eighth grade and she's 13. >> a lot of people in showbiz are not thrilled with their kids following their path. your parents encouraged you. >> i played french horn and piano and had to read music and it was a requirement in our household. but the two of mine that are going to -- that really want to be in this business love music. and if you're talented, you know, my parents never said get a real job and that's phenomenal. >> they realize it is a real job. >> it is. >> and try doing eight shows a week on broadway and say get a real job. >> and reading music is a skill. playing an instrument well is a skill. it should be honored. so i really am happy that my parents valued the arts. >> we're happy you're going to be singing for us later. stormy weather. >> singing stormy weather. >> stick around, everybody. right now, we got to go to some desperate housewives.

>> my littlest, sophia, who is 8, she's a little mini me, she wanted to be on the show and we tried to work it out with her father and he just didn't want any part of it so, but my other two, they're fine. one is in high school, one is in middle school and the furthest thing from their mind. >> that would have been the biggest decision to make. do you let your children -- kids don't really know what -- there are ramifications. are you concerned about that? >> you know what i thought, in life, especially i have three young girls, so you have to develop a thick skin so as my kids can develop that thick skin at a younger age, for the benefit -- they know if someone comes up to them saying i can't play with you anymore because my mother doesn't like you anymore, they know to say, you're entitled to your opinion, but i don't agree with it. >> is the fur going to fly tonight? what is going to happen? >> it is a great episode tonight. i think everyone is going to -- we laughed a lot. my girlfriend and i watched it coming here last night. >> we're in hawaii, so it is just visually very beautiful. >> it is a good life.

horrible parent, my kids -- you got to own it and validate that feeling on your own. you can move forward and it is natural, normal. >> is it because a lot of parents are like helicopter parents and hovering and they're present for everything and hence the, you know, the aggravation? >> i definitely think so. think about what moms are expected to do these days. work, come home, cook dinner, go to a gazillion extracurricular activities and then you have to build the taj mahal out of tooth picks for a project at school and you're exhausted. >> if you go to the bakery and bring cupcakes from a bakery -- >> as a mother of five, how do you -- what do you do? >> i'm store bought all the way. i will bring that -- no. >> be proud. >> when your kids whine, the five of them, or -- what do you do? what is the solution? >> we have all ages, from preschool all the way through high school. so depending on their age, that's how i handle it. we do laps around the house. we do extra chores. >> like a time-out?
