breaks out in a row of homes packed tightly together. how crews are trying to keep those flames from spreading. also while you were sleeping, a blood moon overhead in the night sky. we'll show you new video of this lunar eclipse. plus, google glass on sale right now, but will the tech savbecome a main stream success? >> a great-looking day shaping up. temps are going to tumble as we head throughout the rest of the week staying nice and mild and then a warm up as we head into your holiday weekend. we'll show you how this looks for your microclimate in moments. and this looks horrible, christina. we do have, alan our photographer is on the scene, getting details. this car on its roof. this light pole has been mangled over on the shoulderer and one lane of the free way blocked. 101 in san jose. >> to good to know about that, especially if you're headed out the door. also it is tax day, tuesday, april 15th. this is "today in the bay."
6:01 am
a very good morning to you, thanks so much for joining us. i'm laura garcia-cannon. >> i'm peggy bunker. east san jose where a family is safe because of this. they can credit their fire alarm for getting them out on time. a large fire that started in their garage. seven children inside, along two parents. let's get to a map and show you where this happened. flames erupted on moorings court. just off of 680. so, you can see right now how close these homes are together there. that was the firefighters main concern when they got there. they did end up calling for backup. our former kntv studios now just a heap of twisted metal, charred debris after a massive fire swept through that building near downtown san jose. bulldozers stationed outside
6:02 am
will begin tearing it down. for continuing coverage, let's bring in christie smith just live outside that building on park avenue. firefighters are waiting to get inside to take a good look at the damage. >> that's right, good morning to you. you know, we spoke with one man who said he was living here at the time when the fire broke out on sunday. he said there were other people here, too. firefighters haven't really been able to verify that. that's something that they're hoping to do. they're going to bring in cadaver dogs and make sure that no one was left behind in the building and bulldozers will knock down what's left of the former kntv studios here in park avenue. one man came to get his wallet and i.d. out of a tent after an officer escorted him off the property. this was a massive fire that broke out here on sunday. the man said at the time that about 14 people were staying here and he said up to 42 people called it home at one time or another. firefighters say there is no way
6:03 am
of knowing if everyone got out okay. >> we do find in a lot of our vacant buildings that there are homeless folks that do camp out and it is a challenge because you don't know where they're located. there aren't any specific apartment doors or anything to go to and try to force entry to find folks inside. >> the homeless advocates say they're not surprised at all by the numbers that that man was talking about. homelessness is at a crisis level in santa clara county. sunday's five alarm fire made it too dangerous for firefighters to get inside and, of course, concern about collapse. we're told two dogs apparently died in that fire. it is considered suspicious and i really want you to get just a little brighter out here so you can see what it looks like. you can see the top one just collapsed so quick. that's the reason we're wanting to stay back and security guards, a couple of them out here, too, just to make sure that everyone keeps a safe distance.
6:04 am
reporting live in san jose, christie smith, "today in the bay." >> having been in that building, so many rooms they could have slept in. back out to the breaking news in east san jose where that family just narrowly ecaped after a fire started in their garage escalated. bob redell. bob, from what we understand, this family was really saved by their fire alarm. >> they were. that's what the san jose fire department is saying. check your batteries and make sure you have a fire alarm because that's why that house right there does not have anyone inside. everyone got out okay. a smoke alarm that saved the family of nine. they were asleep upstairs in that home here on moorings caught when it caught fire downstairs in the garage. you can see the fire department right now doing some clearance pps wh when the alarm woke this family, black smoke was filling the upstairs. you can see in this video provided by the san jose fire
6:05 am
department how lucky they were they got out. as you can see the fire engulfed the structure and the two-story home. without the alarm, this family would have been stuck in there. the fire overwhelmed the two-story home and ended up destroying the home. the fire department had a call for a second alarm bringing in more units to keep this from spreading to other homes in what is a very compact neighborhood with very little room between houshs. >> i've never seen anything like that, they were pretty intense. we were just more worried about, you know, the cars exploding or anything like that. we didn't want anything spreading or hurting anyone. >> again, the fire department crediting the mother for being the one who woke up, got her boyfriend out of bed and in then the seven children inside ranging in age from 15 to a newborn baby, just six weeks old. again, they got out okay, red cross is going to be out here to
6:06 am
try to help them. they're staying at a neighbor's house right now. as far as the cause, the fire department believes that they did start downstairs in the garage. the family did mention to a neighbor that hay had sothey ha with wiring and fire department said it's too early to tell whether or not this was electrical in nature. they were able to keep the fire from spreading to other homes nearby and two homes on the back side suffered some damage. very minor damage from the radiant heat. but the damage is so minor, those people will be able to go back into those homes. reporting live here in san jose, bob redell. >> very alarming news there. today does mark the one-year anniversary since the deadly bombing at the boston marathon. the city of boston will be dedicating a series of events to remember those who died and also celebrate those who survived. the bombs killed three people and injured more than 260 others. among the ceremonies to honor theivisms, a flag raising ceremonies and a moment of

october. >> really, beautiful to see. >> just gorgeous. although i know from christina told us earlier, not everyone got to see it. a little bit of fog rolled in, you're out of luck. >> you know what, fog kind of moves around. here in the south bay you were able to see it for about ten minutes and then that fog would come right back into the picture. now, as we head throughout the day today, that fog is actually serving as a blanket over the greater bay area. we're starting out nice and mild. not too cold out there san francisco at 54 degrees. we have the same conditions here in san jose almost uniform temperatures as a result of that blanket of low clouds. nice and mild to kick off the day here in san jose and low clouds settling into san francisco. let's talk about what we're expecting from these clouds as we progress throughout your morning hours. a weak disturbance came through. the weather story of the day is temperatures are cooler as a result. you'll notice that on the seven-day forecast. one of the cooler days in the extended period. stop that clock for you at 7:00 a.m. shaded by the gray across the

6:10 am
mangled light pole. this car apparently hit this, no one is running around in a panic, but there are still injuries reported and chp and the local enforcement interviewing a number of folks on the scene, as well. all this activity and, again, i'm trying to find out details, but it does look like someone was injured and taken out of that car. tracking alan our photographer on the scene and get me more details. traffic flow a big concern for folks. the other camera in san jose. 101 southbound approaching those lights. a light volume of traffic and countercommute and moving smoothly. the northbound side moving very smoothly, as well. widen out the shot towards the traffic map and see the slow through the area and crews have settled on scene blocking just that southbound slow lane. the northbound side does show typical building and pattern for san jose and san jose unified, as well as many peninsula schools may have the week off.

lighter flow of traffic and likely for the bulk of the morning, as well. smooth drive and we're tracking that and a sig alert take half an hour to clear that and we'll track it injuries, as well. we're worried about the people involved. into livermore for west 580 and tri-valley moves smoothly. up towards 29 a stall reported in the middle of your freeway and your approach towards the bay bridge, the entire east bay approaching the maze very smoothly just some slowing down the east shore freeway towards the bay bridge toll plaza. a live look shows you the metering lights are on and now these lanes to the left backing off, again. spring break week tend to see a lighter flow of traffic and approaching eastern weekend and more folks shift their work schedule. we'll track that and low fog along the coast. 6:11, still ahead on "today in the bay." how do you pack up a giant t rex for a road trip. how the massive dinosaur

marathon killing three people and wounding 250 others. vice president joe biden will speak at a memorial service in honor of the victims in boston this afternoon. in the meantime, president obama will mark the day with a private moment of silence at the white house. and today's april 15th, that is tax day, also the day that cover california applications are due, if you don't already have health care through work or school and you don't finish signing up today, you'll have to pay a penalty. at 6:15 this morning a major moment for fashion and tech. google glass no longer just for the tech elite. right now for the first time, the wearable headset available to purchase throughout the country. sales started at 6:00 on this website. google.com/glass. but the supply is limited and the price kind of steep. a pair will cost you 1,500 bucks. so far, the device has only been available to select group of tech insiders. the big question is, will the fad even catch on with main stream buyers?
6:16 am
>> i think it's great. i mean, i'm walking down the street typing e-mail and not watching where i'm going. i think that would be really amazing to be able to look up and get your work done at the same time. >> any interest in google glass? >> none whatsoever. >> why? >> i already think that we have enough distractions walking around, everything else. >> so, google glass getting a mixed reaction here in the bay area and also nationwide. last year, in fact, research showed only 12% of u.s. online consumers would be interested in computerized eyewear like google glass. peggy, you in? >> i don't know. an interesting look, cool to multi-task but a case-by-case basis there. google still in the news as they swooped in and bought drone maker titan earo space out of the hands of facebook. earlier this year there were rumors that facebook was trying to buy titan for $60 million,

6:26 am
the bluefin-21 has a built-in safety feature that will not let the sub go any deeper than 15,000 feet. the data that it was able to collect was being analyzed. officials say, though, so far no word on anything significant. the prosecutor in the oscar pistorius case let the accused murderer off the stand wrapping up five days of cross-examination. after stepping down he rubbed his eyes and took a tissue from his sister who squeezed his arm. prosecutors spent a week of him tailoring evidence. he said pistorius was lying when he thought his girlfriend was an intruder moments before he shot her. >> she locked herself into the toilet and you armed yourself with the soul purpose -- >> not true. >> closed cross-examination by inviting pistorius to take the blame for shooting had his girlfriend.

looks like firefighters still on the scene looking for hot spots and we'll check in with bob with a live report gathering information about 15 minutes. new security camera footage will help them find the person who set fire to some offices that are used by children's hospital oakland. take a look at this video here. surveillance video just released yesterday. it shows a man behind this building before the fire was reported. now, the description in this video is a man who is white, balding, between 30 and 40 years old and wearing a checkered shirt and dark pants. that fire started about 2:30 in the morning on april 4th. most of the smoke and fire damage is on the first floor. ukraine's acting president sedan ti-terrorist operations began last night and protesters argue that the government isn't doing enough. prorussia activists are still occupying buildings in the country. danielle lee live on capitol hill where the obama administration preparing for an emergency meeting with russia later this week. good morning, danielle. >> good morning. the hopes is that this meeting
6:32 am
that is going to be in geneva, an international meeting. several different bodies coming together that something can come out of that, that will allow ukraine to really move forward, potentially stabilize. right now there are no signs of that. there is a real tug of war going on within the country. some people are loyal to russia and others are loyal to the new government in kiev and that's all we've been seeing these protests taking place. pro-russian separatists that are going in and taking over some of these cities and key buildings in eastern ukraine. the white house is very concerned that russia is behind that and insighting some of that violence and uprising and that was part of the conversation that president obama had with russian president vladimir putin just jerdyesterday about those concerns. russia needs to do what it can to de-escalate this tension. of course, russia is denying those claims. they are saying that the u.s. should do what it can on that side to de-escalate the tensions and all the tensions only got worse as word came out that a russian attack plane had
6:33 am
actually made several unauthorized passes over a u.s. navy warship. so, the tensions are there right now between the u.s. and russia, also within ukraine and the hopes is that thursday, something can come out of this that will allow everyone to move forward in the same direction. live in washington, i'm danielle lee. >> do you know what kind of sanctions the white house is considering against russia? >> well, we do know that they're not looking sending lethal aid to ukraine. economic sanctions, things in the financial and energy sectors, for example. >> danielle lee live from capitol hill, thank you. 6:33. taking a look at that forecast for you as we take a live look here at sunol. a little misty overhead, of course, that's the situation in some areas. but meteorologist christina loren is watching all the different towns letting us know what is going to happen this week. >> we have some changes coming our way and nothing major. overall, nice stretch of fair weather and because of that recent rainfall, our hills are
6:34 am
green and we have wild flowers out there and beautiful conditions and pollen levels aren't that high just yet. we do have some wind picking up as we head throughout the day today and that will not help the situation. you want to keep that in mind and, of course, we're getting into that time of year. temperatures mostly in the 50s this morning. 54 degrees to kick off the day in san francisco and much cooler for today. as an area of low pressure came through overnight. for us, that will usher in a strong onshore flow and that means that ocean air transported inland just about all day long. it will be nice out there, but five to eight degrees cooler than where we ended up yesterday. you'll likely notice that difference. show you what to expect when it comes to the low clouds. mostly cloudy by 8:00 a.m. and mostly clear conditions as of lunchtime today and really going to be hard is to find a cloud in the sky, except for right at the immediate coast. we might see fog lingering there until 1:00 p.m. by 2:00 expecting clear conditions for the whole bay area. 78 degrees in the east bay with building sea breeze and 77
6:35 am
degrees today in the south bay. gorgeo gorgeous, just gorgeous conditions for today and tomorrow we'll only nudge your temperatures a degree or two. either way, give or take. mild start in san jose. meanwhile, looking mostly cloudy this morning in san francisco. but we want to get you back to mike and that traffic alert. oh, my gosh, overturned vehicle, huh. >> little more than that. that is what we see in our shot. the officer gave us more information, as we take this shot to screen. southbound 101 just past the tully road off ramp and you see that car is over on its roof. one person has died as a result of this crash and another one has been taken to the hospital. those were both drivers of the vehicles. you see that light pole at the bottom of your screen, that was also taken out as a result of that crash and that has to be repaired. the slow lane is currently blocked but chp has cleared the scene. here is the impact on your drive. southbound countercommute and after most of those vehicles
6:36 am
cleared that did clear as far as the flow. the northbound side still has distraction and ripple effect after everybody saw the flashing lights. but that will start to clear up, as well, as most of those vehicles have moved away from the area. the rest of your south bay, that's moving smoothly because a lot of school districts are on vacation including san jose unified and a number of the peninsula. we're looking at a lillal fog along the coast, but not a major concern. we're looking at the bay bridge with the metering lights but a quick look at the san mateo bridge where traffic flow across very nicely and over to the left, depending on how big your tv is, you might catch a glimpse of that moon that we did see from time to time in the shot. >> a beautiful moon at that, thanks, mike. still ahead, police trace a stolen car to a parking space right in front of a northern california courthouse. we have the excuse the suspect gave, next. plus, serious concerns and outrage in southern california. why police say two men went on a violent crime spree all while they were wearing their ankle

6:53 am
doesn't know if that was electrical in nature. they know it started down in the garage and they do know it was accidental. from the garage it spread fast to the upstairs. you can see the video what it looked like as the flames overwhelmed this two-story home. started around 4:00 this morning. asleep upstairs was the mother, father and children ranging from 15 years old to 6 weeks old. the fire department credits the family for having smoke alarms. that's what aawoke the mother who, in turn, woke up the rest of her family and led them to safety. >> able to go down the stairwell in heavy black smoke and out the front door. smoke detectors are what saved their lives. had there not been smoke detectors in this home, these people may not have made it out alive. fast-moving fire that quickly got to the second floor and had it not had the smoke detectors. again, heads up to mom for saving everyone in the house. >> the red cross has arrived out here within the past hour to
6:54 am
help this family. they're staying with a neighbor. as you can see, their home has been destroyed. they can't live in there, not until it's rebuilt. one thing about this neighborhood that made a challenge for the fire department, if you look around, it's very compact, small streets, houses, single-family homes that are very tight together. they had to get their rigs in here and ended up calling for a second alarm and a challenge was to keep that fire from spreading to the other homes. they succeeded in that. two other homes suffered very minor, minor damage, so minor that those people will be able to go back inside. reporting live here in san jose, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> thank you very much. this morning our former kntv studios will be torn down completely. the building on park avenue in san jose a heap of twisted metal and charred debris. that massive fire swept through the building on sunday. bulldozers are standing by to rip it all down at day break. let's bring in christie smith

6:56 am
at one point about 42 people were coming and going living here. he says at the time of that fire, though, everyone made it out okay. but investigators say they really haven't been able to verify that. >> and we'll also get our task force out here and cadaver dogs to make sure there is no one left inside the building. >> the homeless advocates say they're really not surprised that the building had so many people living in it at the time of the fire. that homelessness is really at a crisis level in santa clara county. we're also told that two dogs did apparently die in that fire. that fire is considered suspicious. back here live this morning. you can really see that there just isn't much left of that building. the crews starting to show up this morning and you can pan over right on the other side there. you can see that they're starting to put cones out and we presume that some of the bulldozers will be showing up here making of this pretty soon.
