well, we want to get to today's top story, and as we mentioned, natalie's in boston this morning. this is the one-year anniversary of the marathon bombings there, and 12 months later, the city and its people are still coming to grips with this tragedy as they prepare for this year's race. natalie, good morning to you. >> and good morning to you, savannah. and today will be a day of reflection remembrance. vice president joe biden, along with state and local officials, will lead a tribute here to the bombing's survivors, the victims' families and even that hero in the cowboy hat. then at the finish line, a moment of silence followed by church bells at the exact moment, 2:49 p.m., when the first blast went off. the words emerged almost as soon as the smoke was clear, boston strong. a city stopped feet from the finish line, a finish line they finally crossed. >> three, two, one! >> the one run for boston, a cross-country relay that began in california and finished with

runners and survivors walking across the finish line side by side. >> boston strong, baby! >> you get goose bumps. it's -- i don't feel like i deserved to cross that finish line. >> reporter: for the home of the world's most famed foot race, it has also been a marathon back. the street once blood-stained now repainted. boston has unfinished business. 20-year-old dzhokhar tsarnaev, caught cowering in a backyard boat four frenetic days after the attack, now faces trial in november. >> it seems pretty clear that what dzhokhar tsarnaev's lawyers are going to argue is that he joe the older brother tamerlan killed in a hail of gunfire. but there are still unanswered questions. did the bombs mean they had more

targets like the fbi suggested? could his american-born widow hold clues to the brothers' motives? she and their 3-year-old daughter are now out of the spotlight venturing out to trips for dunkin' donuts and chipotle. when asked for more information about tamerlan, why did russia refuse to answer? for now a new starting line for next week's marathon in the race to replace what happened last year, respect for the victims and vigilance. >> our officers while i'm sure they've always been vigilant in the past, they're just going to be a little extra vigilant out there. >> reporter: they turned out 3,000 strongs for this "sports illustrated" cover shoot. crowded in copley square ready to show the world where this ends. and dzhokhar tsarnaev will face the death penalty when he goes to trial this fall. he has pleaded not guilty. but right now everyone here is focused on moving forward, looking ahead to monday's

marathon. and you better believe boston is ready to run again. >> and natalie, you have been in boston so many times visiting with survivors over the last year. what would you say the mood of the city is today as this anniversary is upon us? >> reporter: certainly a lot of mixed emotions here. you see obviously the strength and resilience of the survivors over the past year and how far they've come. but a lot of people as they approach today, this anniversary, but also looking ahead to monday, marathon monday which is a tradition for so many here to come out and cheer and stand alongside in the crowd. i think a lot of people have mixed emotions about whether or not they want to thj it may be a difficult thing for them to do to once again stand and cheer along without obviously thinking, you know, about what happened here a year ago. >> a lot of people want to make some new memories. thank you. we'll be back to you throughout the morning with more from boston. all right. meantime, dylan is here.

looks like it's going to be another rough day of weather here on the east coast. >> this is a fast-moving storm system that's already produced tornadoes, flooding rain, even snow. it's going to hit new parts of the south overnight and will continue to affect the east coast as it heads this way. >> you can see absolute chaos. upwards of 20 to 30 trailers destroyed. >> reporter: high winds in mississippi damaged dozens of trailers in this rv park where two people were trapped by debris. >> they believe they had a tornado come through the rv park here. we did have two people trapped. the fire department personnel were able to extract them and get them to the hospital. >> reporter: despite temperatures that soared into the 80s last weekend in chicago, winter's last blast blew through the windy city overnight dropping up to 3 inches across the area coating spring flowers and back yard barbecues.

and just adds many people are ready for spring, a fast-moving storm system sucker punched parts of michigan, nebraska, and texas with snow, hail, and heavy rains causing flooding along the red river in minnesota. and as that storm moves eastward, it's in the form of mainly rain for now. a and we are looking at delays possible through the big hubs. especially in atlanta this morning and then through the afternoon as we work our way through the northeast. by charlotte, baltimore later on today. new york city. it's rain and wind. and boston, rain and wind as well. you can see some of the really strong storms moving right through tallahassee. but up across atlanta, it's really just some showers. conditions are improving there. but we'll see the system make its way up in the northeast with the snow on the backside of it. tomorrow morning, we could see this whole thing end with a bit of snow. it certainly is one of those times of year where you get your really nice days, but then you also get the snow. >> dylan, thank you.

>> i can't imagine that. well, there's new developments this morning in the hunt for malaysian air flight 370. crews are now using a robotic submarine to search the area. this morning that work is proving to be trickier than officials first believe. katy tur is in perth for us again this morning. >> reporter: hey, there. not a good start. six hours into what should have been a 16-hour scan, bluefin-21 aborted its mission sending itself back up to the surface. what happened? officials say it just got down too deep past it's capacity. it's three miles down there, which is the same capacity as bluefin-21. it's supposed to scan the ocean floor above it. this is largely uncharted and unknown. so they're going to hit some anomalies. still they analyzed the data the bluefin-21 was able to collect

and found that nothing was there. not encouraging these at all. when you're not getting encouraging news, you're going to get in-fighting and finger pointing. "the new york times" came out with a report today that cited an unnamed senior defense official that says the chinese were hurting this as much as they were helping it. the chinese denied this report saying it was unfounded, not grounded at all. not what you want to be hearing when you're talking about a missing airliner. >> kate ty tur, thank you. we are going to learn more about the charges against an alleged gunman in kansas city. ron allen has the latest. ron, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. prosecutors have been carefully plotting their case for several days now. they're going to charge him with premeditated murder and committing a hate crime. if convicted, ultimately he could face the death penalty.

investigators now believe they can prove bias, hate drove frazier glenn cross to shoot and kill three people outside a jewish community center and retirement home. >> we've now determined the motivation behind this was a hate crime. >> reporter: hate crimes is an idea of white supremacists including time on federal prison in weapons charges has mocked in the past. >> hate crime laws, for example, that only apply to white races. >> reporter: while prosecutors seek justice, the victims' families celebrate the lives of loved ones loss with remarkable strength and grace. >> it didn't feel like a crime scene to me. it was my family. >> reporter: mindy corporon reveals on what she felt upon finding her father and son shot and killed in a parking lot. >> from what i heard, they didn't feel anything. they didn't know it was coming. >> reporter: reat, a high school freshman and promising performer

seen here at a recent school event. ♪ oer the land of the free >> reporter: his grandfather, one of reat's biggest fans had taken him to the audition. tom hastings lost his kid sister terri lamanno gunned down at the retirement center where she visited their mother every sunday. planning to celebrate 25 years of marriage today. daughter elizabeth finds it ironic her mother was a victim of intolerance. >> she loved with no boundaries. she loved everybody. >> reporter: for now, they refuse to even discuss the alleged killer. >> it was a horrible act of violence. we want something good to come out of this. >> reporter: the families are planning services this week. no doubt will be emotional gatherings. this week reat's classmates held a private service outside the school as they prepared to return back to class.

carson, savannah? >> ron allen, thank you very much. mindy corporon you just saw lost her 14-year-old son reat underwood and her father dr. william corporon in that shooting. mindy, good morning to you. >> good morning. good morning. >> let me just say, our hearts go out to you. they break with you. how are you doing this morning? how are you holding up? >> this morning -- excuse me. this morning's been a little tougher. i did wake up with a renewed spirit, but i had not heard about the shooter as much. i just heard from your show in my earpiece, so i understand. but i'm okay. i'm lifted by my belief in christ, in my belief that reat and my dad are in heaven, and i know that mrs. lamanno is in heaven also, and we pray for their family also. >> so many people in these last two days have been struck by you, your poise, your grace, your eloquence, your ability to

unbelievably comfort others in the midst of all this. why has it been important for you to speak out and to be a voice here? >> i don't really know. i don't understand. i've asked our pastor why it seems so important that i speak and why are people asking to interview me, but i have a sense of peace about me that they're in heaven. literally, when i saw my father lying there, i heard god say, "he's in heaven," and it was horrific but comforting, and i ran right to reat, but i had a lot of hope that reat was not as bad off. and somehow, god and my life and my family and our friends have prepared me for this.

and so, i'm uplifted by that. i have my moments, but i am uplifted by the fact that they're in heaven. >> and i want to remember both your son and your father. let's start with reat. he sounds like an exceptional young man. he was on the debate team, was a gifted singer, and he had written on his twitter account, "live life to the fullest and never give up." to me, it's amazing that someone so young would have that very wise perspective. >> yes. thank you. yeah, he's wonderful. he's wonderful now, he's wonderful in my heart and nye memories, and we had a wonderful 14 years with him, and he had a very full life for a 14-year-old. we're going to be able to talk about that at the funeral, and we'll write some things about it in his obituary. and i'm hearing -- i'm going to be at the vigil today, and i want to hear from the students. i don't want them to shut us out. i want them to know that we're available for them to talk to us, and we're going to follow them, those students that knew

him and we'll follow them through graduation and college, and we want to be a part of that as well so that reat's memory lives on. >> and your father, dr. corporon, very popular in that area. and as i understand it, totally devoted to his grandchildren. he even moved to your town to be closer. >> yes, yes. we would tease that my parents didn't move here to be close to his kids, he moved here to be close to his grandchildren. and that was accurate. he and my mom did everything that they could for their grandchildren, you know, soccer games, basketball, baseball, tournaments, nonstop. they wanted to be with them. and they're the grandparents that bathed the kids and diaper and everything. they're very all in. >> well, mindy corporon, i think so many people are just praying for you and caring about you, and thank you so much for being here this morning in the most difficult of times. we really appreciate it.

>> thank you. it's the prayers that help, so keep praying. >> we will. mindy, thank you very much. all right, with natalie in boston, willie's here with this morning's other top stories, including new turmoil in ukraine. good morning, willie. >> good morning, guys. breaking news in ukraine, where a military operation is under way with the goal of removing pro-russian separatists occupying government buildings in the eastern part of the country. some of the activists have voluntarily surrendered to police more than three days after taking over those buildings. in a phone call monday, president obama urged russian president vladimir putin to use his influence to get the militias to lay down their arms. the woman accused of throwing a shoe at hillary clinton last week could spend up to two years in prison. the incident happened during a speech at a las vegas hotel. federal authorities have now filed two criminal charges against 36-year-old alison ernst. clinton was not hit by the shoe. she made a couple jokes about it and continued on with her speech. there's no word on what the suspect was specifically protesting. michael jackson's mother is

on the hook for almost $1 million to a concert promoter in a failed lawsuit over her son's death. a judge on monday called on katherine jackson to pay aeg live $800,000. a five-month trial ended in october with the jury determining that aeg live did not negligently hire the doctor convicted of causing michael jackson's death in 2009. the money will cover costs for filing fees, court reporters and travel, among other things. guys, check this out. emergency responders in england calling the survival of a driver miraculous after he somehow survived an 80-foot plunge over a cliff. the man's car veered off a road, went over the drop and crashed along the rocks at the seashore near brighton. the 33-year-old was able to get out of the crumpled ford focus and walk down the beach until he was found, believe it or not, suffering only minor injuries. my take away? i'm getting a ford focus. >> yeah, exactly! my goodness. >> getting a ford focus. >> get a deal on two of them. meanwhile, a beautiful reunion between a father and son

be a weekender and reconnect at hotels like conrad and hilton. book now at hiltonweekends.com good touz morning to you. i'm peggy bunker. firefighters aa family of nine including a 6-week-old baby is safe this morning thanks to working with smoke detectors. flames erupted about 4:00 this morning. t the mother heard the fire alarm and got her entire family out safely. bulldozers are expected that scene of a massive fire that destroyed our former studio in san jose. more than a dozen homeless people were living inside this abandoned building at the time of sunday's fire. one man told us as many as 42 homeless people were living in the building and that everybody did get out okay. however, arson investigators have not had a chance to go inside because the danger that that building could collapse

around them. so, today, bulldozers will knock down what is left standing. the cause of the fire is under investigation. and right now we do want to get a look at your forecast for this tuesday. meteorologist christina loren is here with that. >> thank you, peggy, good tuesday morning to you. kind of a gray start here in san francisco. the whole area low clouds and dense fog this morning, as well. at the immediate coast, we'll stay cloudy for the first part of the day, but between 2:00 and 4:00, beautiful sunny sky and, yeah, nice sea breeze, as well. mild conditions cool at the coast and temperatures work like this. 77 in san jose and 78 out in the east bay and 66 degrees in san francisco and you might want to keep your jacket handy today by the coast with that breeze brick picking up and wind chill developing. overall not a bad day, really nice in the south bay. let's check your drive, here's mike. >> start in the south bay, we have northbound traditional about this time and look at 101. this is the issue.

north 101 is jammed up coming off of 85 and all the way past tully road. southbound side a little bit of slowing. one lane is blocked and that deadly crash investigation leaving the southbound lane at tully blocked. northbound is jammed by the distraction and the earlier problem we had with all the flashing lights and the distraction and the ripple. over here across the bay, slow across the san mateo bridge and the metering lights on, but lighter flow coming out of the maze. >> thanks so much, mike. another local news update in just about half an hour. i'll see you then.

malaysia flight 370. on the first dive, the sub exceeded its maximum safety depth and automatically returned to the surface. one year of the boston marathon bombings is being observed today. vice president joe biden and his wife are attending the official memorial service. natalie is in boston this morning. we'll have a lot more from her coming up. ahead, michael phelps swore he'd never compete again. but now he's planning to do just that. so, does it mean we're going to see him again in rio in 2016? plus, a one day only sale for google glass that's touched off a frenzy. >> all right, but we're going to begin this half-hour with oscar pistorius on the stand in his murder trial for a final day. today national investigative correspondent jeff rossen is in pretoria with the latest. jeff, good morning. >> reporter: hey, savannah, good morning to you. inside the courtroom, i actually got the chance to speak with oscar pistorius briefly. he spoke so low, i could actually barely hear him, just thanking me basically for saying

hi. in person, up close, his eyes are really puffy from crying. he looks exhausted and absolutely broken. no rest today for him either. that prosecutor nicknamed the pit bull is on the attack again, wrapping up his cross-examination in dramatic fashion. within minutes today, the prosecutor caught oscar pistorius in yet another contradiction. >> i'm sorry, my lady, i'm getting confused. >> reporter: all along, pistorius said he shot and killed his girlfriend reeva steenkamp by accident. he heard the bathroom door opening and thought an intruder was about to attack him. but today he testified the noise he heard wasn't the door, it was just the magazine rack inside. >> why would you fire if the magazine rack moved? because it has nothing to do with a door. >> i didn't have time to interpret it, my lady. i thought it was the door opening. >> reporter: the prosecution says that doesn't make sense. their theory, reeva was inside the bathroom dressed and with her phone, fearing pistorius

during an argument. after he shot her, the blade runner says he panicked. >> i was screaming, i was screaming reeva, reeva! and i was crying. i was crying out the more desperate i got that i couldn't get into the toilet. i was crying out and then i ran to get the cricket bat and then i ran back to the toilet. >> you weren't screaming at reeva, because she was hiding in a toilet, were you? >> no, my lady. >> reporter: as you watch the testimony, just want to give you some perspective. you can't tell from the courtroom cameras, but the prosecutor stands here. look how close he is to oscar pistorius in the witness box right here. literally arm's length. one other interesting note from here, pistorius never makes direct eye contact with the prosecutor, even when he's answering his questions. he just looks straight up, over there at the judge. >> who should we blame for the fact that you shot her? >> i don't know, my lady, i was scared. >> should we blame reeva? >> no, my lady. >> you must be blaming somebody for this?

>> i don't, my lady. i believed there was a threat. >> reporter: and with that, the prosecutor sat down. his grueling five-day cross-examination over. pistorius's lawyer now trying to repair any damage on redirect. >> did you consciously pull the trigger or not? >> my lady, i didn't think about pulling the trigger. as soon as i heard the noise, before i could think i pulled the trigger, my lady. >> reporter: at the heart of the case, pistorius's relationship with reeva. he said they were in love, reading to the court her valentine's day card to him. >> it says on the front of the card, roses are red, violets are blue, and then on the inside, she wrote the date on the left, and then on the right she says, i think today is a good day to tell you that -- and then it says i love you. >> reporter: so here's what's next. the defense now has the case and will call all of its experts. in fact, a forensic expert is on the stand right now. there's something else i want to

show you. just moments ago, our first look at pistorius since coming off the stand. at one point, he actually appeared to be sleeping in the courtroom, eyes completely closed. a minute later, the camera cuts back, his eyes are open, but he is looking absolutely spent. in all, we can expect 14 to 17 more witnesses before this case is closed. so we still have a couple weeks left to go here. >> all right, jeff rossen at the courthouse, thank you very much. now let's get a check of the weather from dylan, who's in this morning for al. >> "today's" weather is brought to you by the new windows. one experience for everything in your life. >> and now that we all have spring fever, let's talk about some ridiculously cold temperatures. we have freeze warnings all across the south, over into the east. this is for brutally cold temperatures, even record-breaking cold. look at some of the current temps we have right now. lubbock, texas, 27 degrees. dallas is at 37. head north, we're looking at single digit temperatures.

we have broken the all-time record low in marquette, michigan. nine degrees this morning and high temperatures don't look much better. 26 for a high in northern michigan today. 40 in chicago. that's 17 degrees below average. we're even looking at temperatures about five to 15 degrees below average down in texas. houston only tops out at about 15 degrees today, and it is going to stay chilly on the backside of this cold front. we also have to keep an eye out for some severe storms. the biggest threat for small hail and also for damaging wind gusts, and this area in red 7:36. good morning, i'm meteorologist christina loren. you can see here looking really cloudy this morning, although we are starting to see a little bit of sunlight. as we head through the day, we will become sunny each and every hour all the way through about noon and then completely sunny sky headed our way. 74 degrees today, 65 degrees in san francisco with the building breeze. this is where you might find some cloud cover later on today.

71 on the east bay today. tha never served his prison sentence for armed robbery, but now years later after turning his life around, the state is trying to make him. here's nbc's joe fryer. >> reporter: as mike anderson, a father of four sits behind bars, his wife says she struggles to eat and sleep. >> it's just very hard. and i miss my husband very, very much, my kids miss their father. >> reporter: she says she recently learned that before they met, anderson had been convicted, guilty of armed robbery, taking money from a burger king manager who was making a bank deposit in 1999. anderson was sentenced to 13 years in jail, but during his appeals posted bond and went home. >> he then waited and waited and waited for the missouri department of corrections and the courts to give him a date to surrender and to begin serving his sentence. that day never came.

>> reporter: for some reason, the state thought anderson was in prison when really he was leading a normal life. >> he got married, had children, opened a successful business, coached youth football, joined a church group, did everything that you would expect a normal person to do, because in his mind, he believed that maybe the state courts had changed their mind. >> reporter: then last summer when his sentence was supposed to end, authorities realized an apparent clerical error, anderson was never in jail. that's when law enforcement showed up at his front door and arrested him. from prison, anderson spoke with the radio program "this american life." >> i never felt like a fugitive because a fugitive's someone that's running from the law. i never ran from the law. i was there. >> reporter: his attorney has filed a petition asking for anderson's release. even that burger king manager thinks the state should set him free. >> it's their fault, so i mean, it's like they're going to try and penalize him for another 13 years. that don't seem right. >> reporter: but the current prosecutor disagrees. >> i believe that if we allowed

shake out the dust and tidy up the contents. the summer before my eighth grade year, we found "betty cornell's teen-age popularity guide." my dad had bought the book over 20 years before thinking it was an interesting piece of vintage pop culture. >> i can't even begin to tell you how many times i nearly threw that book away. i thought, i think i'll just give it to mya. she might be interested. >> so my mom came up with the idea to follow the advice during eighth grade. i'd always wanted to be a writer, so she told me, you know, this is a great writing project. >> mya's always struggled in school socially. >> i had always struggled to make friends and i had always struggled to find confidence, so she'd hoped maybe this 1950s guide could have an effect on how i felt about myself. >> it was not a book project as much as it was a survival project. >> in betty cornell's popularity guide, she basically gives advice on a series of different chapters and themes, and those include everything from figure problems to good grooming,

dieting, going to a dance, all of that. >> but as it kept going, i saw the things that she was doing. i saw the clothes that she was going to wear, the skirts, the gloves, the hats, that she was going to wear a girdle. >> this is my girdle that i wore. >> that's when i got really nervous. >> it's not comfortable at all. >> i worried that things were going to get worse for her and not better. >> as my heels were, like, clicking on the sidewalk, it reminded me of, like, the drum beats of an execution. and so i was -- i was really nervous. >> i would sit down with her and i would say maya, you have a lot of nerve, you have a lot of guts. >> they would ask various questions about what i was doing and i always responded, well, it's for fun. that made it easier. so my dad, he was able to find betty cornell. i knew the face so well and i said oh, my gosh, it's betty! you found betty! >> this is the real you. >> she went from sort of being this imaginary friend in my head

like the least challenging to the most challenging things, and so that definitely helped. >> all right, so we know you wore a girdle. you had the gloves, the hat. you dressed up. you didn't tell any of your friends at school that this was an experiment. >> i did not. >> so did they think you were off your rocker? >> my friend would approach me and she's like, maya, this is really weird. this is really weird. what's going on? and it's like, well, it's for fun. they go no, this is really weird. you look like a substitute teacher. and so that was always, you know -- because you want to tell. because it makes sense. if only you understood what was going on. but it was -- definitely i didn't want to jeopardize any of the reactions. >> i was going to say, middle school, i think we can all agree, is the worst. >> definitely. >> and the hardest. and to be different at all is so difficult. how were people's reactions? i mean, were they nice about it or not really? >> there were both. i think in the beginning, it was really hard because, you know, people were like -- i had been

very quiet for sixth and seventh grade, and then all of a sudden i'm wearing these outfits. so they were pretty shocked. and towards the end, they would approach me and they would go wow, you're really gutsy. you've got a lot of -- basically you've got a lot of courage to be doing that i really respect that. >> let me get betsy in here. your mom betty cornell wrote this book. we saw her in the piece. she looks fabulous. she's 87 years old. what did she think when she finds out a young girl from across the country is not only reading her book, but taking it to heart? >> well, i was able to give her the same e-mail that miaya sent me. she absolutely filled up. i think for her, she just couldn't believe that her advice was still helping somebody else. >> well, it's true, because we laugh about some of the advice might be a little outdated, like putting vaseline on your eyelids instead of eye shadow. but you say it well, maya, in the book. some of it is truly timeless. what advice in your mind really stands the test of time?

>> i think the core of betty's book is so much based on it's not as much about how you look and what you wear, although she says that's a key factor. mostly it's about the person you are and how you treat others. and i think that's the timeless message that i gained from the book and that can be gained from reading betty's book. >> and now you have a relationship. betty and betsy both. you know maya. you're following her career. >> i am, i am. >> i know you leave it in the book to find out if it worked, if you're popular. can i just say this? mood here is exactly that. it's about surviving. it is about, you know, being boston strong, a term that we have come to know so well over the past year. but here they live that every day. you know, what i've seen and getting to know a couple of the families and those who have survived the bombings over the last year, as you see that strength and the resilience that they're showing every day. for them, every day is a post-marathon day, as celeste corcoran told me. you know, this has redefined how they live their life. it's their new normal. so they're looking forward, though, to this one-year mark being over and behind them. and looking forward to moving on and looking ahead, and of course, next week, what's ahead is the boston marathon. i can tell you there's some mixed emotion here surrounding the marathon. a lot of people excited. they want the marathon to go on and be back to what it was, being one of the world's most elite running events. but at the same time, i think there are those who also, you know, still have a little

concern and high anxiety when it comes to the emotions that they'll be feeling as they face that day. >> natalie, we know how the city more broadly is feeling, but what about some of the specific people that you spent so much time with over the last year who were directly impacted by the bomb and who lost legs, lost loved ones? how are they feeling about this as the anniversary hits? >> you know, as i just -- and you'll hear it coming up in just a little bit, i speak to one of the survivors and she talks about having mixed emotions, as i mentioned, on this day, about it being more difficult than a lot of them thought. i think they thought they would get here and be able to just say, okay, i've moved on from that, and my life has gone on and i've accomplished so much in the past year, but at the same time, this is a day where they are remembering and where they're paying tribute and honoring those -- you know, three people did lose their lives as well as the fourth person at the campus of m.i.t. so a lot of thought to those who lost their lives, but of course,

injuries you sustained. how difficult was that process coming back, being an amputee? >> it has not been easy. it's a whole new world that i really didn't know anything about. and it's been slow -- it feels like a slow-moving process, but when i look back and realize it's only been a year and i'm getting around pretty well, i guess, you know, i couldn't be happier with my recovery process. >> you've really come a long way considering that doctors first told you you might never be able to walk again unassisted. have there been many milestones that you've looked forward to over this past year? >> absolutely. some of the things i used to love to do, like paddle boarding and running and wearing high heels are all things that i'm able to do now. so although they're not quite the same, at least i'm -- i feel a little bit more like myself. >> as a lady, we know how important it is to wear those high heels and you're wearing

them today. i see the leg -- if we can just pan down a little bit. you see how rationalable it is that it looks almost exactly like her leg. >> it is. i was amazed at the technology out there now for prosthetics. they've really come a long way, apparently. >> what did it mean for you to put those heels back on? >> i think for me, it was a way to kind of regain some of my old self. it's harder to wear them and to walk in them than regular flat shoes, but it makes me feel like i didn't have to give something up. >> meanwhile, you have joined what is an incredible community of survivors, and the strength that they have shown in the past year alone has been nothing but awe-inspiring so many of us. how has that community helped you in your healing? >> those other survivors are like family to me now. i would do anything for them. and i lean on them for support. they are the only other people,

a very good morning to you. 8:26. i'm laura garcia-cannon. firefighters say a family of nine, including a 6-week-old baby safe this morning, thanks to working smoke detectors. the family sleeping in the home when the flames erupted just after 4:00 this morning. the mother heard the alarms, was able to get her family out of safe. cadaver dogs and bulldozers expected this morning at the scene of that massive fire that destroyed al old studio on park avenue in san jose. more than a dozen homeless people were apparently living inside the abandoned building at the time of sunday's fire. one man who lived there told us as many as 42 people were living there with him and that everyone got out okay, but arson investigators have not yet had a
