with the latest. eunice, good morning. >> good morning, savannah. emergencteams used flood lights and flares to search the stricken vessel through the night. they are continuing their efforts this morning. the south korean coastguard says the visibility in the waters is less than 2 metres. they are laying tents so divers can reach the inner most parts of the ship to find survivors. those rescues have been taken to a monita island. painstaking and heart breaking, families in anguish this morning, waiting for any news. this parent saying they repeatedly said the same thing, nothings with new. minsters and lawmakers visiting here are useless after what was supposed to be a fun four-day field trip turned into a frantic race against time. one student shot this video. the water is widening, she creams. others teft texted parent, mom, in case i don't get a chance to

speak to you, i love you. dad, the ferry has tilted too much. i can't move. survivors taken to monita kendall island now sharing horrifying detate about their ordeal, this student saying, i almost got trapped. i was told i could go outside, i could jump through the water through the exit, but i couldn't. another saying, i tried to reach the window at the front of the cabin using a fire extinguisher, hitting it three times, but it won break. this ship water 480 feet long that sailed tuesday from a portcy near seoul just 12 hours after it departed, it sank in 120 feet of water. there is still no official explanation for why the ferry sinks, while zriefrs and distraught family members wait for the ship's captain hiding at sea apologized saying, i'm really sorry and deeply ashamed.

i don't know what to say. >> the government said three cranes were being moved to the site of the accident and would arrive on friday. although, efforts are ongoing to establish if there are any survivors. savannah. >> eunice if south korea this morning, thank you. let's turn to leiutenant arlow abramson the spokesman for the commanders in north korea. leiutenant abramson, good morning to you, sir. >> reporter: good morning to you as well. thanks for having me. first, i would like to say on behalf of the united states navy, our thoughts are with the families of the korean passenger ships during what we know is a doctor difficult and uncertain time. >> it's an incredibly difficult time, sir. i know there is the uss bonnham rashard is in that area. to what extent is the u.s. navy involved in search and rescue this morning? >> that's correct. we do have the uss bomb

erashard, an amphibious assault ship that has about 3,000 sailors and marines. they have an osprey aircraft as well as an mh-60 helicopters, currently, we have two mh-60 search and rescue capable helicopters that are contributeing to the search and rescue operation and we remain in very close contact with the on-scene commander. i also should point out, we have a very close relationship with the coastguard and the navy and we do rehearse these types of operations and we'll continue to support as required by if republic of korea. >> you refer to it as a search and rescue operation. i think that's the question everyone is wondering the morning. is there hope there may still be survivors there? >> well, from the u.s. navy perspective, as long as we are tasked to do search and rescue, which we are currently still doing, we still remain optimistic.

we still hold out hope that there will be some survivors out there. so we'll continue to work tirelessly alongside our part first and the republic of korean navy and coastguard until we're asked to stop searching, but currently our people are out there assisting in this effort. >> i don't want to put you on the spot, but i have heard given how quickly that ships turned over and sank, there is a possibility that there may be some air pocket itself. do you have anything to add to that? >> well, what can i tell you is, you know, every search and rescue operation is very unique and very difficult and as you know and i've heard and i've reported on, the area where this, these, the area where this occurred is the area of hay traffic and the weather today was not very good. so it is a very difficult area, but, again, our forces are trained to our search and rescue and we'll continue to support

the republic of korean five and coastguard as requested. >> leiutenant arlow abraham, thank you, thank you for your good work. we appreciate it. >> thank you, thank you for having me. now to the latest on the search for malaysia flight 370. today 11 planes and ships are being used to search the indian ocean. katie, hello. >> reporter: hey there, carson, a little breaking news to report. the oil break that ocean hills detected a few days ago, it has been detected and found to not be a part of the 370. they may stop the visual search on the water as early as tomorrow, but there is a little good news, blue fin 21 was finally able to make its first successful pass along the ocean floor. three miles below the surface blue fin 21 successfully finished its third mission

making it a 3d sonar map of the southern indian oaks seabed, after three aborted missions, this was the first 16-hour scan it was able complete. so far the robotics submarine has mapped 35 square miles. >> the visuals, there were many suggested on the blue fin 21 were very clear. not in finding what we were looking for, but what the seabed looks like. >> a close start to what experts say would be a long process. this really is a tech for the logical feat. >> a technological feat, a formidable challenge. if we have the technology. >> an oceanographer at the university of western australia says the most challenging aspect of the search is the sheer depth. >> it's 450 times of what we experience at the surface. so there are very few vehicles in the world which can actually go down to that death.

the blue fin can reach the limit of its capacity to be able go down to map. >> reporter: arena 6,000, in 2011, it found air france's missing black box some 13,000 feet below the surface. malaysia airlines flight 370 is believed to be a depth of 15,000 feet, mean physical they find something, recovering the black boxes, let alone wreckage, will be a massive undertaking. >> they're not going to be able to bring every single piece of equipment. >> reporter: and, of course, they haven't found anything yet, search leaders today announced a few moments ago, they were able to greatly reduce the search zone, leaving many to believe it might not take quite as long as anticipated. carson. >> katie, thanks for that, you had a jogging accident yesterday. we are wishing you a speedy recover

city missouri area where as many as 20 drivers have been targeted over the last month. on wednesday, four people told police they to the they saw gunshots and saw a rear window had been shattered. police searched. they found no bullet or shell casings. authorities are offering information leading to an arrest in the recent shooting. 50 and more fabulous than ever this woke. ford is marking the 50th anniversary of the mustang and to celebrate, how do you do it? you go to new heights. on wednesday, a 2015 limited edition mustang was put on display above ground on the observation deck there of the empire state building. ford did the same thing 50 years ago, now to get it out of there and now it had to be taken apart so the pieces could be fit into the elevator itself. then it was put back together. unfortunately, to get it out again, they had to take it apart again. a man is facing armed robbery charges in florida

today, national correspondent jeff rossen is at the courthouse this morning. jeff, good morning to you. >> hey, savannah. good morning to you. as you mentioned big day because. -t is that final day before the recess. and the defense is trying to go out big. their star witness on the stand again today is a forensic expert and he's giving an alternate theory about the order of the bullets. but the prosecutor -- he's not having it, trying to pull his testimony and his integrity apart. >> reporter: inside oscar pistorius' toilet room the entire case comes down to inches. was reeva steenkamp standing or falling when she was shot? facing the door or at an angle? the defense forensics theory, reeva wasn't standing or defensive. she collapsed quickly after the first shot. >> thus, the impact of the bullet hit the hip and she lost voluntary control, he's unstable on one leg. she cannot use the right leg to move so she's collapsing.

along the peninsula and hit 67 degrees in san francisco for today and temperatures 72 in the east bay. est forecast. >> all right, dylan, thanks. now, parents in washington state are outraged after witnessing a child abduction only to later discover it was fake. captured for an online video, now, the brothers behind it are apologize. nbc's joe fryer has the story. >> reporter: it happens in a matter of seconds. a masked man jumps out of a van, grabbed a 4-year-old boy from a park bench in sequim, washington, and then goes back to the van and races away. >> i've never run so fast in my life. >> reporter: tiffany sees it all. >> i was bawling i could not quit shaking. my entire body was shaking. i was so scared for that little boy. >> reporter: several parents chased after the van and called 911. they learn the abduction isn't

real and the kidnapped boy is related to the men in this video. >> we didn't think about the kids that we were endangering. jason and jeremy holden posted several on their youtube page. including a staged armed robbery. but they insist the fake kidnapping was meant to teach a lesson about abduction awareness. >> pretty much keep an eye on your kids. >> reporter: that explanation doesn't sit well with marc klaas whose 12-year-old daughter polly was kidnapped and murdered. >> i found no educational value to the video whatsoever. >> reporter: the brothers say they called the authorities shortly before the fake kidnapping to give them the heads-up but the officer who pulled them over didn't seem know. >> honestly i was told -- >> reporter: police are investigating if this was a crime. as your tiffany barnett --

good morning to you, 7:56 right now. i'm peggy bunker. updating you on that breaking news as you prepare to leave this morning, the intersection at almaden expressway and coleman road still closed at this hour as officials there are still investigating a violent crash. police think one of the drivers was drinking and they got a call for help just after midnight, once they got to the scene, they found a man with life-threatening injuries. they originally told us that the driver had died at the hospital, now they're updating the situation and saying the man is still on life support. the driver of the second car was also injured. the crash does remain under investigation this morning. they do think, once again, alcohol was involved in the situation. we're told the intersection will remain closed for a couple of hours and, of course, checking in with mike inouye right now, that will affect the morning commute. what is the latest around that area? >> this is vacation week. we have a little less surface

way. we'll meet michael and his wife in a moment. fis first, let's listen to his story. >> this is my story about tm. 46 years ago, i was 17 years old. i came home from work while i was pumping gas in detroit because my arms hurt so badly. i couldn't grip anything. i took a six hour nap hoping i would feel better. when i woke up, i was paralyzed from the neck down. i could only turn my head, breathe and yell for help. i thought i was dying. well, 46 years later, i have to say i have had a blessed life. my wife of 42 years and my boys have kept me going. i always had a strong and positive attitude that i can do anything. i do have some bad days that creep in from time to time, however, all i had to do was to look at my family and that kept me going. i practice my walking every chance i got. it would take me a while, but i was determined and i did it. i had to retire in 2003 because of my tm. and now i can devote my time to

something i'm really passionate about. i'm setting up a foundation. our mission is to raise money to support spinal cord research. one day we will be free from a disease that is so traumatic on patients and families. having tm has been very difficult. however -- >> 22.3 kilometers. >> you can live a productive and fulfilling life. you can choose to let it defeat you or rise to the occasion and overcome the obstacles presented to you. >> michael is here with his lovely wife luanne. we're delighted you sent in the letter, mike. don't give up out there, everybody. tell everybody what you told me this morning, that you had written to everybody. >> i had. i had written to everybody. >> your sense of humor captured us during the phone call we had. it is apparent here today. that's got to be just such a strong force in your lives.

you seem to enjoy all the moments. >> absolutely. if you can't have a little bit of humor when you're, you know, paralyzed or -- it is all about attitude. you have to have a great attitude in order to survive. >> luanne, he had already had his his diagnosis when you met on a blind date, right? >> that is correct. >> tell us about the moment you met. >> he was a new kid in town and started a job with striker corporation. and she asked if i would show him around. and that's how -- >> you sure did. >> i did. >> you had a cane then and just had a little wobbly or -- >> yes, yes. i was walking with a cane and, you know, the funny thing about it was it was a blind date, and i went and i knocked at her door, and this was the day of the hippies and i had the tassels and the first thing i said was tie this. >> you look a woman in charge. >> yeah.

like i just tide ted the knot or entire life. >> you knew then? >> i did, but she didn't. >> i think by wearing the blue ribbens, you're trying to let people know what, exactly? >> there is a devastating disease out there called transverse myelitis. kim made these for us. she has tm, she's in atlanta, georgia. tm is an autoimmune disease that affects the spinal cord and it is like a sleeper cell. >> do they know what causes it? >> no, they don't. it just sneaks up on you. age, zbrdiscrimination, no. >> did they know that's what it was or did it take a long time? >> it took a long time. it took a long time. at first they thought i had polio, they diagnosed me with something called polyneuritis
