and you made it to the weekend. >> we're looking over here towards the maze where traffic flows smoothly. getting there you might have a hang up. i have a problem with grammar, but we'll sort that out coming up. and you are looking at live pictures this morning. there is the mayor ed lee speaking in front of the fountain on this the 108th anniversary of the great san francisco earthquake. it is friday, april 18th, and this is "today in the bay." well, good morning, everyone. thank you for joining us. i'm scott mcgrew. >> i'm peggy bunker in for laura this morning. we begin with breaking news to tell you about. an avalanche on mt. everest. 13 people there were killed when snow and ice came tumbling down the mountain. right now rescuers are still looking for climbers who may have been buried. we all know this is such a dangerous mountain, bob. >> one of the most deadly

avalanches at least in eight years. good morning to you there, peggy. the worst toll in a single day happening at what is supposed to be the start of that mountain's climbing season. rescuers have recovered 11 of 13 bodies, all of them sherpas, local guides that help hikers up the world's highest peak. this avalanche struck early friday morning at a relatively low elevation between base camp and camp one. they were bringing supplies up to camp one and camp two, which are stops for climbers on the way up to the summit. the avalanche buried the men in ice and snow killing 13 of them, hurting 4 more. two of them critically. this morning two producers with "discovery" channel who happened to be at everest spoke on "today" show. >> it is the very beginning of the season and to lose this number of people at the very beginning of the season may be the end of the season here. >> hundreds of climbers and

there are guides at the base camp ready to finish their final summit to the top of the mountain. again, a 29,000-foot mountain, tallest peak in the world. they were there when the avalanche hit and when it did, many of them rushed up the mountain to try to help these people and they also deployed a helicopt helicopter. 11 bodies of the 13 so far discovered. scott? >> all right, thank you, bob. the man accused of killing a san jose couple in 2012 could enter a plea today. he is accused of shooting his ex-girlfriend and her husband at their home in downtown san jose 2012. police say a witness was inside the couple's home, saw him shoot them. the witness has not been identified. the man was extradited from mexico last week and charged the very next day. a pleasanton teenager who was speeding when he hit and killed a bicyclist has reached a plea deal. cody hall pled no contest and will be sentenced to nine years in prison next month. the now 19-year-old was driving

43 miles over the speed limit when he hit and killed diana on foothill road. officers say that hall previously bragged about speeding on twitter. michaels craft stores alerting customers of a major security breach. data from more than 2 million credit cards may have been compromised. christie smith joins us live from san jose. how do i know if they got my information? >> that's the good question. i think you really just have to keep an eye on your personal information, your credit cards and see if there is anything unusual. but also mikelchaels has a lot information on their website. we are talking about dozens and dozens of stores across the bay area. from fairfield and down to gilroy. five michaels stores in san jose alone, just the latest retailer to suffer a security breach at certain processing payment centers for cards. last year they remember it was target that was hit. now, michaels said this could

affect 2.6 million cards or about 7% of its payments by cards. aaron brothers is saying this could involve about 400,000 cards used at their stores. and the announcement came after the company worked with two new security firms that discovered sophisticated malware that apparently it wasn't encountered by earlier firms looking into it. on its website michaels has a lot of information about the breach. a list of stores that are affected and michaels are saying it is working with banks and law enforcement so the malware is no longer a threat to its customers. now, the dates for this san jose store on coleman avenue that we're talking about this michaels from may 8th, 2013, to october 6, 2013, december 12th through january 19th of this year. michaels said this basically affects cards and expiration dates, but does not include your personal information. they are offering free credit

monitoring and fraud assistance for those who might need it. reporting live in san jose, christie smith, "today in the bay." >> thank you. the secret service says it's close to understanding how hackers access personal information of target customers, but it could take years to find the criminals behind that hack. federal investigators say even if they do find out who is behind the hack, it's likely they're overseas and going to make prosecution difficult. target has its own investigation into the breach. it thinks thieves gained entry through a computer owned by one of its vendors. in fact, it was in the air conditioning of all things. about 70 million people were victimized in last december's hack. the tri-valley will get less water this year because of harsh cutbacks. it will only allocate 75% of regular supplies to the tri-valley. that means pleasanton, livermore and parts of san ramon will get less tap water.

let's take you back here to san francisco. we are looking live at the ceremonies there. people have gathered around that fountain to commemorate the great san francisco earthquake. you are listening now to the sirens. reminding people that just after 5: 5:00 a massive quake shook san francisco. the sirens that you hear there are to commemorate the people that were lost there. 3,000 people. majority of san francisco was destroyed. no once again the exact moment that that earthquake struck 108 years ago. pretty amazing. wikipedia may be able to tell us the next time there is a flu outbreak.

researchers at boston children's hospital found articles were consistently used during time of peak flu activity. may help us predict how severe the flu season is and help doctors diagnose and treat patients. walmart one step closer to becoming the biggest financial in the nation. allows customers to tnsfer funds between any location in the united states. with 4,000 locations across the country, walmart will likely take a portion of business from western union and money gram. it will cost $4.50 for a transaction under 50 bucks and $9.50 for any transaction up to $900. facebook has a new feature on its app will let your friend know when you're nearby. called lodgely enough, nearby friends. it will track you at all times, even when you're not logged into facebook. nearby friends will not give your exact location, only the neighborhood you're in.

mean whm, zinga releasing a new mobile version of farmville 2 that will let players choose whether they want to connect to their farm or their friends or play solo. the new farmville also lets people access farms both through a personal computer and mobile device. google giving some lucky users a chance to sort of try out the google glass before they pay that 1,500 bucks. the company is reportedly trying a free pilot program. google sent e-mails to a number of potential customers inviting them to test out those glasses. users receive a kit in the mail that include the frame styles and the four available colors of glass. the devices are nonfunctioning, which means they are not computer enabled. only part of the experience. crews back out at levi's stadium this morning finishing up the field. yesterday our nbc chopper was overhead as workers rolled out the grass yesterday. the bermudagrass reportedly uses half as much water and grows

back the fastest. now, the first test of the grass will come in august when the san jose earthquakes play at levi's stadium. >> looking pretty good out there and also that great game yesterday. didn't go the way we wanted it to, but we had good baseball weather. >> good baseball. i wonder how the 49ers feel about the earthquakes breaking in that stadium first. 5:14 now. let's take you outdoors and show you what we're working with this morning. right now we're looking good. a really, really nice weekend, as well. spring-like conditions and that's what you typically associate with easter time and temperatures as we get into the next couple weeks are going to drop off. we have a changing pattern just around the corner. we'll dive into that forecast right now. want to show you your wind speeds this morning because they are playing a factor, especially if you're crossing the golden gate bridge. bridge goes from north to south and our wind this morning coming directly off the ocean from west to east. so, this could impact you if you drive a high-profile vehicle. it's pretty gusty out there.

sustained at 17 miles per hour. take it easy for your morning drive. else where looking nice and clear and that wind is keeping the low clouds from settling in. 74 for the south bay and hard to beat that and 69 degrees really comfortable conditions along the east shore. we'll see a beautiful day fremont today about 69 for you and 70 in oakland and meanwhile tri-valley full sunshine and 76 degrees. let's talk about the changes coming your way. for easter weekend we'll cool you off a touch tomorrow and bounce those numbers right back up as we head into your sunday. we'll climb by almost ten degrees all across the board between saturday and sunday, which means warmer out there. if you want to hit the beach, sunday is going to be comfortable to do so and then by monday temperatures start to drop off, yet again. clouds will increase and bring in those showers as of tuesday. the models aren't agreeing on the timing of the showers. my best analysis for right now looks like the north bay area to the north of the golden gate

bridge, specifically, will get a little bit of shower activity as we wake up on tuesday morning, another round on wednesday and then look what happens as we start to develop through wednesday of next week. produce decent rainfall totals. what we're expecting from that coming up. hi, mike. >> take you to the south bay because we have an update about a crash we're talking about. the rest of the southbound freeways moving smoothly. it's on the southbound side and coming towards me and approaching highway 87 off of highway 17 right around almaden expressway. reports of your two right lanes blocked by a fender bender and one car spun out and ran into the other car involved. no major injuries involved but sending a crew out there. another crash reported at blossom hill. might be the same crash and mixed up locations. sounds like the almaden expressway is the one that is going to stick. no slowing there and zoom in towards oakland where we're still watching this. the two bigs rigs approaching

broadway. a lot more slowing over the last hour and things started to move better. no updates from chp. still have your two right lanes and we still have two lanes, actually three open at this point. bay bridge toll plaza with very, very light traffic flow here. no backup and just a couple folks waiting in the cash lane as you have to pause to pay there. and the peninsula moves nicely, as well. 101 and palo alto and 280 is just as clear. we do have new surveillance pictures to show you of the two men that police think opened fire outside of a target store in the east bay. the two men started shooting in the store's parking lot on tuesday night. two people there were hit and both are expected to survive. police think there was an argument between the shooter and the victims before the shooting. if you know who these men are, police in richmond ask you to call them. the man accused of gunning down an east palo alto activist is dead. gregory elarms died last week of

natural causes. he was originally convicted of shooting and killing david lewis at the hillsdale shopping center in 2010. a judge dismissed the murder charge last year saying police illegally forced a confession from elarms. the district office appealed that ruling and waiting a new ruling when he died. 5:18 right no. no remains found at the former kntv studios. cadaver dogs have gone over and alerted their handlers to two spots where bodies might be. however, fire crews escavated those areas and didn't find anything. homeless people were living in the abandoned building when the fire began. they say three people are still unaccounted for. we have new details on the condition of one of the people injured in a southern california crash involving two fire trucks. authorities say a man injured in the crash remains in critical condition, but is at least

stable. a monterey park firefighter also hurt is in moderate condition. the two trucks were headed to a fire wednesday when they collided, pushing one into a cafe, 15 people hurt. but only 2 are in the hospital this morning. the trial of pop singer chris brown could begin today. brown's trial is scheduled to start right after the trial of his body guard wraps pup both men are facing assault charges after a maryland man say they punched him outside of a washington hotel last fall. a plane carrying hundreds of passengers from korea hit two light poles while taxiing to its gate at l.a.x. on wednesday. an airport operations vehicle misguided the jet during the taxi that huge double decker aircraft. 384 people onboard. nobody hurt. but the plane's right wing was scratched. it's being inspected before it will be allowed to go back into the air. if all goes as planned, a space-x rocket will take off this afternoon delivering two tons of supplies to the

international space station. stormy weather is threatening today's launch that could be pushed to tomorrow if the forecast doesn't improve. the original wednesday launch was also scrubbed when crew members discovered a leak. nasa's small moon orbiting spacecraft no more. flight controllers just confirmed the robotic explorer crashed into the back of the moon. launched in september and its main mission was last month. researchers say it was orbiting the moon at 3,600 miles per hour. u just 300 feet above the surface. it probably hit a mountain, again, that was entirely planned. meanwhile, therapy dogs are returning to boston to distract those still coping with memories of last year's bombings at the marathon. the canine comfort dogs first gained national attention when they were used after the sandy hook school shootings. four retrievers arrived in boston yesterday, the marathon, of course, starts in three days. >> is there anything better than

"today in the bay" bob redell joins us in the studio with the very latest. bob? >> good morning, scott. of those 13, 11 bodies recovered and two still missing and two of them critically in an early morning avalanche that struck at a low elevation on mt. everest. the world's tallest peak and all 13 climbers are sherpas and

tourist guides who help tourists up the mountain. bringing sly supplies up to camps one and two. they were killed when a wall of ice and snow buried them between base camp and camp one. a producer and cameraman with nbc happened to be on the mountain and they just spoke with savannah guthrie on "today" show. >> first thing this morning, just before 7:00, we heard an avalanche and it's a pretty regular occurrence here. so nobody was shocked by that. but when radio reports started coming off the mountain that people were stuck in the avalanche, everybody came out and started getting organized for the rescue. >> scott, as you're aware as we're talking aboutthe voice of america's recording that there could be as many as 100 climbers trapped above the avalanche. this is the worst disaster. in all, almost 250 people have climbed, died trying to climb this mountain that reaches more

than 920,000 feet into the sky. scott? >> we'll continue to check with you throughout the morning. a coroner is trying to identify the body of a woman found. this is the second body found in the area in less than a week. investigators think it is 50-year-old marie sanner who disappeared while on a hike on wednesday. they are still waiting for a positive identification from the coroner. sanner's car found in the parking lot on the panoramic highway yesterday. that's when a hiker tragically noticed her dog waiting alone by her car. investigators say that the body shows no sign of trauma. it's possible she may have fell down a slick about a 30-foot hillside. also investigators still waiting for toxicology results to find out how magdalena glinkowski's body was found. investigators do not expect foul play. san leandro police trying to figure out how fast an suv was going that crashed into the family in a sedan. the family had been drinking and

happened just before 10:30 last night on his perrian boulevard. investigators say the driver of the white suv ran a red light, hit the sedan, the four people in the car, including a 5-year-old and an 8-year-old were taken to the hospital. they should survive. the driver of the suv was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence. a san jose man taken to the hospital early yesterday morning after a crash near almaden expressway and coleman road has died. he has not been officially identified but he was taken off life support about 8:00 last night. he was taken to the hospital after his suburban collided with another suv. it's unclear who ran the red light, but investigators say that the driver of the other suv had been drinking. a 21-year-old man accused of throwing a fire cracker into a kraud crowd of people at wednesday's dodgers game will make his first court appearance today. he tossed a lit firework on to a walkway at at&t park around 9:30

wednesday night. fans say they heard a loud bang, saw smoke above right center field, at least five people reported injuries, including dizziness and loss of hearing. charged with discharging and possessing an explosion and discharging a firework in a public place. a new warning this morning for shoppers of arts and crafts chain store michaels. data from more than 2 million credit cards may have been stolen. christie smith joining us from san jose with details on how to find out if you're a victim of this breach. we all shopped there, christie. you hear about these instances where our information is vulnerable. >> good morning. it was target and now we're hearing about michaels. michaels is saying the information that could be breached might include, say, your credit card and the expiration date, but not necessarily personal information like your pin number, your name, your address, your social security number. michaels is the biggest arts and crafts retailer in the country. the breach is saying that card

processing systems and it could affect nearly 3 million of its customers and also 400,000 cards used at its subsidiary, aaron brothers. the date, we're talking about generally run between may 8th of 2013 through january of this year. and we're talking about dozens of stores right here in the bay area and five of the michael stores in san jose alone. on its website there is a letter this morning from the ceo saying the sophisticated malware used by criminals no longer poses a threat to its customers, that it is safe to use debit and credit cards at michaels and aaron brothers stores now. customers are encouraged, though, to go ahead and review their account statements carefully and make sure there isn't any unusual activities. if so, go ahead and call your bank. also offering free credit monitoring and fraud assistance for those who might need it. reporting live in san jose, christie smith, "today in the bay." >> christie, thank you.

let's check in with meteorologist christina loren and your sunday, your easter sunday forecast. >> good morning to you. it is going to be really, really nice this year. i remember the past couple years have been pretty nice, but three years ago we had rain on easter weekend. you don't have to worry about that this year. lots of sunshine coming your way. it will be warm so you might consider having that egg hunt early if that's what you and your family are planning to do this year. 54 degrees to start in the day oakland and temperatures nice and comfortable. not too cold out there even with a mostly clear sky. don't have that blanket of low clouds overhead. because of the wind, nice and clear over the embarcadero and the same clear, cool start right here in san jose near the hp pavilion. go sharks. temperatures looking good out there. 74 degrees from the peninsula today. 69 in san francisco and 74 degrees in the south bay, sunny, mild conditions here. lots of sunshine for today. tomorrow, you will notice more cloud cover out there. so, if you look at that vitamin d, today is your day to get outdoors.

you travel westbound. commute direction and that stall reported and minor fender bender, as well, at treasure island. the traffic is building a bit and we'll track that, as well. the rest of your bay moves very smoothly and crash not presenting any problems waiting for an update on that. 580 through livermore and little slower and the b.a.r.t. system through this area and around the system. right now, no delays with 41 trains on time. you have a b.a.r.t.-related story, scott. >> for the second time in as many months a b.a.r.t. train has derailed. it happened as it head under to the train yard near the north concord station yesterday. officials didn't immediately know what caused the derailment. this is interesting, though, back on february 21st, another train head under to the same yard derailed at the concord station leaving cars strewn across two sets of tracks.

the goal was 7 million after counting all the people who applied late because, remember, they had that glitch, that computer snafu on the last day and gave people an extra two weeks if they tried to sign up. now they counted up all of those and they hit 8 million over the original goal before all the fall website problems and before this last-minute glitch. the white house is really doing a victory dance here. they also think that 35% or they're saying that 35% of those who signed up were under the age of 35. remember, the healthy, young people who are to balance out the costs for everyone else. republican critics say, hold on a minute, those numbers don't tell the whole story. first of all, when you weed the children out of that under 35 group, it's only 28%, which was below projections. also concerned about whether the insurance plans actually cover what people need, whether a lot of these people already had insurance and whether premiums for all of us may go up in the fall. they are hitting the brakes what

democrats are claiming as a victory here. of course, it is likely to be decided in the polls in the fall because in november this is certain to be an election issue. 8 million people signed up, just over a third of them were healthy, young adults and children. >> once again, once again in washington it's both a victory and a defeat, depending on which side you're listening to. tracie potts, thank you. prosecutors have asked a court for an arrest warrant for the captain of the south korean ferry that sank earlier this week. investigatorsologist announ als that a third officer was at the helm of the ferry when it began to go under and not the captain. cranes arrived to try to right that ship. so far rough currents and bad visibility prevented searchers from getting into the submerged ship. overnight they began to pump air into the vessel just in case there are any survivors onboard that boat. officials have confirmed 29 deaths so far, but they expect that number to rise dramatically. more than 270 people are still missing and many of them high school students on a field trip.

right now a robotic submarine, once again, scanning the floor of the indian ocean for any sign of that missing jet. this is the fifth attempt by bluefin-21. this is the deepest attempt, as well. the sub creates sonar maps of the bottom of the ocean. it has found nothing before and it has found nothing so far today. the sub is searching an area of water about 15,000 feet deep where pings believed to be from the plane's black boxes were last heard. meantime, dozens of planes and ships will continue to scour the ocean surface. well, you probably remember this video after a burglary suspect was caught on a baby monitor standing over a sleeping toddler in his crib in texas. that man is now in jail. authorities say the tips from the public help to catch 18-year-old christopher gomez of houston. investigators say that gomez is also a suspect in two other home burglaries. in that disturbing video, you see gomez standing over that sleeping toddler in the nursery

kind of looking around the room there with the flashlight. this happened earlier this month. the boy's parents were sleeping just a few rooms away. people gathering in san francisco right now to mark the anniversary of the great earthquake of 1906. right now crews are painting a fire hydrant gold, just like they do every year. that hydrant was the key to stopping the spread of flames after the 7.8 magnitude quake. around 3,000 people died. we don't know the exact number, even today. but more than 80% of the city was destroyed in the aftermath. earlier this morning, people attended a commemoration ceremony at the fountain otmarket street. it served as a meeting point for people displaced by the quake. in about 15 minutes, the group will head over to lefty oduools for the celebration breakfast. earlier thousands of christian pilgrims filled the alleyways of the old city of jerusalem. they carried wooden crosses as

why is because the wind is strong enough to mix up our atmosphere and not really prevent that fog and those low clouds from settling in that dense air to the surface. this is what we are working with as we head throughout the day today, comfortable conditions across the bay area. as you know, it's going it be pretty nice around here, but a little bit on the warm side and those microclimates will definitely impact your day. heading out friday, sunrise at 6:30 this morning, a few clouds to start, but a full, sunny day today. temps warm up into the 70s and then fog will return for this evening. a weak disturbance that will pass through the bay area and increase onshore flow and be rather cool for tomorrow and then on sunday those temperatures jump right up. so, mid-70s across the board for your inland valley today, little cool at the coast, 63 degrees and lots of sunshine coming your way as we get into sunday. want to show you the difference, though. 72 in the south bay on saturday versus 80 degrees. big warm up coming your way on easter sunday. and then those temperatures change yet again. we're going to drop those

numbers like a rock as we head through next week. so, here's the get away forecast, i promise you, temperatures are going to be comfortable all across the board. you don't really have any travel concerns when it comes to weather, except you want to account for patchy, black ice up in the sierra nevada, if you're headed up there for the weekend especially around sunrise and watch for wind over the grapevine, as well. headed south into southern california. overall, though, tuesday, break out that umbrella. the rain returns. check your drive and say hi to mike. >> looking over here towards dublin where this is probably the slowest drive of the bay. as far as the distance and the speeds are going, we're looking at westbound 580 for a good distance looking at speeds coming down into the upper 50s. look at the map. this is right here, so getting closer towards the dublin interchange and the slowing drive starts way back here. again, 55, 5 at the very worst where the congestion is heaviest. 84 shows a gradual build. this is typical pattern for a saturday. little lighter and later for

that build. over here a recovery going on. northbound 880 a slot of slowing and all the way up towards broadway because we had big rigs blocking two lanes and they cleared about 15 minutes ago and traffic is recovering through the area. no more problems at the bay bridge toll plaza and a stall reported and a crash actually more than a stall, it is crash across that bay bridge. we'll show you that curve as you make it towards treasure island and i watched this for a while. i don't see any unusual slowing. you're okay. be careful and may see the activity in the slow lanes and back to the map and showing you the rest of the bay moves very smoothly. the south bay we're following this crash south 85 at almaden expressway. major damage to one of the cars involved but no injuries reported and no slowing shows up. we'll send it back to you. an east bay math teacher has been accused of having a sexual relationship with a student. 27-year-old leon chang surrendered to police yesterday, two months after detectives say they were tipped off that he may have been involved with a san

leandro high school student. in that complaint the district attorney alleges chang arranged a sexual meeting with a minor with the purpose of exposing himself and to commit lewd acts. chang faces two felony charges of having sex with a minor. the san leandro school superintendent said he is cooperating. police in hayward are asking for your help. look at these photos of a bank robber and he's using a pretty specific shirt. he is wearing a shirt that says, i have issues. he is described as a white or hispanic man and weighing 185 pounds. police say this man wearing that shirt walk under to the u.s. bank on hisperrian boulevard this week. no one saw a gun in the situation, but the teller did give him the money from her drawer and he took off. the allege hate crime on
