laura is off this morning. update on breaking news. the biggest ever disaster on mt. everest. an avalanche at the highest peak in the world, 13 people were killed when snow and ice came tumbling down the mountain. right now rescuers are still looking for climbers who may have been buried. bob redell joining us in the studio with the latest. it is not unknown that this is probably one of the most dangerous places on earth. >> it is. no other event on everest has killed this many people. 11 of those 13 people killed, two still missing and four more were hurt, two critically. the voice of america reporting that as many as 100 climbers could be trapped above the avalanche on the world's tallest mountain. now, this happened a little bit after sunrise friday morning nepal time. the 13 who died were sherpas, local guides who help hikers up the mountain. they were resupplying camps one and two. those are stops on the way up the summit when the avalanche struck a wall of snow and ice

struck, burying the sherpas and a cameraman tell "today" show that avalanches are a regular occurrence on everest. >> the biggest tragedy of this is that it's the very beginning of the season and to lose this number of people at the very beginning of the season may be the end of the season here. >> many climbers at base camp rushed up the mountain to try to save them. the helicopter was also deployed. prior to this morning, the worst single day disaster on everest was back in 1996. you might recall this when a snowstorm killed eight climbers. peggy? >> bob, the question, too, as you mentioned, hikers actually trapped above the avalanche. those sherpas are the lifeline to get down the mountain. how will they get down? >> presumably those hikers and climbers they're talking to 100 according to voice of america are with is she psherpas and th presumably going to have to wait

it out until they find a new path. here in the bay area, body has been found and now the coroner will determine if that body is a hiker who has not been seen since wednesday. the marin county sheriff says the body does match the description of 50-year-old marie sanner. she and her dog joined a friend on a hike. the two separated, sanner never made it back to her car. investigators say there are no signs of trauma. it's possible she fell down a slick 30-foot hillside. this is the second body found in the area in less than a week. another female hiker disappeared march 30th. her body was found april 12th. investigators do not suspect foul play in that woman's death. 6:03 right now. the president of san jose state is promising action. a task force made up of students, faculty and community members issued a long list of recommendations last night. now among them the creation of

an office of diversity. this would allow students to anonymously report incidents of discrimination and also requiring diversity training for faculty and staff. >> give you 100% occurrence that each and every one of those recommendations will be closely looked at and seriously reviewed. >> track record, i'm not very confident. i'm very skeptical. time will tell. >> now, the task force was created after an african-american freshman reported that his white dorm mates were taunting him with racial slurs and putting up a confederate flag and putting a bike lock around his neck. a follow up now. so far no human remains have been discovered in the burned down wreckage at the former kntv studio in san jose. three cadaver dogs have gone over the charred rubble from sunday's enormous fire. they alerted their handlers to two spots in the rubble where bodies might be found, but fire crews have dug through the

debris and discovered the remains of a puppy, but no people. homeless people were living in the abandoned building say three people are still unaccounted for. that suspect there charged with felony arson and burglary in the case. well, a warning now from the arts and crafts giants chain michaels. 3 million debit and credit cards have been hacked. >> 30 stores here in the bay area are at risk and "today in the bay" christie smith joins us live at one of those stores in san jose. christie, everyone will want to find out, how do i know if i'm a victim of this. >> michaels is suggesting pay close attention to your own account information. if you see anything unusual there, something you didn't go buy, go ahead and report that to your own bank. we're talking about dozens of michaels store. five in san jose alone where debit or credit card information was compromised. what michaels is saying is they don't believe any personal

information, names, addresses or pin numbers were stolen. the breach occurred that payment processing system and may affect 2.6 million cards that were used at michaels arts and craft stores and another 400,000 cards used at its subsidiary aaron brothers framing and a limited number, they're saying, of cards were used fraudulently afterwards. on its website, though, there is a letter from the ceo explaining that criminals used very sophisticated malware in this and that it is no longer a threat and that it is safe to shop at their stores. the stores and dates are listed on michaels website this morning. they vary, but generally occurred between may of 2013 and january of this year. again, customers advised to watch their accounts and report any unusual actevty. they are also offering free credit monitoring and fraud protection for those who find that they might need it. reporting live in san jose, christie smith, "today in the bay." >> we showed one coleman

over the bay area and bring showers to the sierra nevada for today, but for us we're talking about abundant sunshine yet again and a cooler evening. that's when we're expecting the changes to start. 54 degrees in the east bay right now, 53 to start the day in the south bay. want to show you live pictures and you can see high, wispy clouds here in san francisco where you'll find the low cloud cover and the fog this morning is through the east bay hills. this is sunol and nothing that is going to prevent you from getting to work on time. you do want to keep in mind, foggy out there. patchy, inland fog and the reason why we don't have that fog at the coast this morning is because the wind is pretty strong. really mixing up our atmosphere and could impact you if you're headed across the golden gate bridge and north to south, this wind is coming in from west to east. hey, sunset, excuse me, sunrise this morning right at 6:28 in san jose and 6:30 straight up in san francisco. really pretty colors coming our way as we head through the next 20 minutes. we'll show you the live pictures as we have you covered across the bay area. 74 degrees along the peninsula

for today and 74 in the south bay. not a bad day. tomorrow we'll drop your numbers a touch as storm system passes to your north and then we'll boost up the numbers as we get into this weekend. take a look at the difference between saturday and sunday and the south bay, in particular. 72 degrees on saturday and then almost a ten-degree jump as we head through your sunday at 80 degrees. the tri-valley will be the warmest. mid-80s coming your way. so, might be a good idea to have that egg hunt earlier. if you have the kids outdoors, make sure they have the sunscreen ready to go. >> in san francisco cherry blossom festival and last weekend the big parade and they stretch it out over two weekends because that's how we do it. i'm japanese american, if you didn't know. this is how we do it on a friday. smooth drive right now. christina talking bout the sunrise. and no problem just the cash lanes back up but we'll see the metering lights in a few minutes judging by this amount of

traffic. looking over towards the span and crash reported over on the eastern side of the treasure island. that's what we're looking at and haven't seen any major slowing. again, just the steady build up and incline towards treasure island. watch for flashing lights and as you enter the tunnel, back to the lights there. the maze and east shore freeway and nice drive around the peninsula, as well as coming down into the south bay. no delays, really, for 880 or the tri-valley either. just a slight build towards the dublin interchange. here 880 northbound circle in the center of your screen at stevens creek boulevard. three vehicles involved, but all in the center divide and no injuries reported and no slowing yet. southbound 85 the crash we have been following for an hour, hour and a half has been there and start tog see little slowing but nothing dramatic stay to your left as you pass. back to you. >> all right, mike, thank you. still ahead on "today in the bay" rough winds and wild currents as crews try to upright that sunken ferry near south

in san francisco, for the cherry blossom festival, festivities start on saturday noon to 5:00 for that festival. great conditions. 62 degrees and then the parade is 1:00 p.m. city hall to japan town. beautiful conditions out there. >> just one of your many parades in san francisco, there is probably one happening. over here in oakland we're looking at an earlier crash between two big rigs and we're also looking for post-work traffic as the a's are playing for their victory tonight. mike, here are today's top stories. right now rescuers are combing through ice and snow looking for climbers believed to be buried in an avalanche on mt. everest. so far, 13 people are confirmed dead. there were mountain guides trying to bring supplies to camps. this is the worst disaster ever on the mountain. this morning marks the 108th anniversary of the great earthquake of 1906. right now, as they do every year

people are gathering for the survivor breakfast. earlier this morning a lot of people gathered at the fountain and they painted a symbolic fire hydrant gold. earlier this morning craft store michaels said 3 million cards used at its stores and aaron brothers stores nationwide may have been compromised. this includes at least 30 stores bay area wide. michaels says hackers may have accessed credit card numbers and expiration dates and it says there's no evidence that names or addresses or pin numbers are at risk. and new this morning, prosecutors have asked for a court to issue an arrest warrant for the captain of the south korean ferry that sank earlier this week. investigators also announced today that the third officer who was at the melm of the ferry when it began to go under was not the captain. the announcement was made today as cranes arrived to right that ship. so far rough currents and bad visibility have prevented searchers from getting that submerged ship upright. but overnight they did begin to pump air into the vessel just in case there are any survivors

onboard. officials have confirmed 29 deaths so far, but they expect that number to go up drama dramatical dramatically. more than 270 people are still missing from that boat and many of them tragically, high school students on a field trip. right now a robotic submarine is, once again, scanning the floor of the indian ocean for any sign of that missing malaysian airlines jet. this is the fifth attempt by bluefin-21. the sub creates sonar maps of the bottom of the ocean. it's now covered 42 square miles. it's found nothing before and nothing today. the sub searching an area of water 15,000 feet deep where pings believed to be from the plane's black boxes were heard. meantime, dozens of planes and ships will continue to scour the ocean surface. proliffic author and nobel laureate has died at 87 years old. the columbian author is best known for the book 100 years of solitude which won nobel prize for literature and sold 30

inouye. we have about 53 degrees to kick off the day in the south bay, same for the peninsula. in san francisco you're at 53, as well, but 54 and little chilly out in the north bay this morning where we're seeing the 40s and it will be cold as we get closer to sunrise, which is at 6:30 straight up this morning in san francisco. looking good for a nice, sunny and warm afternoon with temperatures climbing into the 70s. as we head into this evening, your sun will set tonight. 7:47, so, our days are getting longer and still about a month away from the official kickoff of summer, but it will be here before you know it. rain, though, on the way beginning of next week i'll talk about that coming up. right now temperatures looking like this for today. 70s and couple 60s at the immediate coast. heading to work to san francisco, bring that coat with you, but you can ditch it later on today when you get back home. temperatures stay nice and warm. 74 degrees in san jose and that number will drop tomorrow a touch and then as we head into easter weekend, look at this,

we have a smooth drive with just a little bit of slowing right at the scene. the most we've seen all morning and major damage to one of the cars and so far still sounds like it's in lanes. you saw the impact on traffic. overhere a disabled vehicle, but note this, look at this, west 580 just green all the way to the dublin interchange where speeds come down just about 55 at the very worst. light volume of traffic getting out of the area heading towards the central valley and that will get crowded early afternoon because folks will take off for this weekend visit family and, of course, maybe tahoe, as well. dumbarton bridge and no delays across the peninsula and looking over towards the bay bridge toll plaza with traffic flowing nicely and entire look of the bay, only one that shows up red, palo alto. this is where we see our sensors showing red through the area and the camera shows you hardly any traffic. what could have happened a traffic break somewhere out of our shot and nothing reported by

chp. i will track that and give you an update. >> we want to hear more about that. police in hayward want you to look at some of these photos here of a suspected bank robber wearing a pretty specific shirt. you might remember it if you've seen it before. the shirt says, i have issues. this is what he's wearing when he robbed the bank. the suspeblth describct is 5'8" about 185. police say he walked into the u.s. bank on hisperian boulevard and told the teller he was armed and wanted cash. no one saw a gun but the teller did give him the money from her drawer and he took off. at the shark tank just moments before the start of the first playoff game. look at the sap center. the power all back to normal. hundreds of sharks fans who arrived early were in the dark for about a minute. take a look at what that looked like here. this was the picture taken after the emergency generators turned on. you can see the jumbotron was dark. it delayed warm ups by about ten minutes. the game did start on time. >> we were having dinner and the lights went off and we were wondering what is going on, are we going to start on time? it was just kind of freaky everybody started yelling. crying out, beat l.a.! all the usual stuff. but it was just a matter of about ten minutes or so and came back on. >> a little excitement, a little fun. actually felt like, i don't know, kind of fun. >> all right, on to the game itself. the sharks got a strong start in the stanley cup playoffs. the power outage no ill-effect on team teal. the sharks jump out to a

commanding 5-0 lead over the kings. now, l.a. did mount a late comeback scoring three goals in the third period, but in the end, not enough. the sharks take game one of the series, 6-3. game two is sunday at the tank and the puck drops at 7:00. so, absolutely go sharks. another hopeful playoff. >> yes, my neighbor is such a sharks fan. i know she is thrilled right now and really rooting for them, as we are all. crews back out to work levi's stadium. >> our helicopter was overhead as workers rolled out the grass yesterday. this is ban deara bermudagrass reportedly used half as much water. it grows back really fast. look at that. isn't that cool? >> top notch. >> the first test of this grass is going to come in august when the san jose earthquakes play at levi's stadium. time now 6:26. still ahead, a celebration of

this is "today in the bay." well, good morning, everyone. thanks for joining us, i'm scott mcgrew. >> i'm peggy bunker. marking the great earthquake of 1906. just after 5:00 in the morning when the quake struck. earlier this morning people attended a commemoration ceremony on market street. it served as a meeting point for people displaced by the quake. about an hour ago crews panlted this fire hydrant gold just as they do every year. that hydrant was key to stopping flames after the 8.6 magnitude quake. more than 80% of the city was destroyed in the aftermath. now, for the rest of the

morning, the group will be at lefty o'doul's for the breakfast. "today in the bay" tracie potts joins us live on capitol hill. tracie, new numbers this morning. the number of people that signed up, it puts them over the top. >> it exceeded what they planned to do which was 7 million. but the president has come out himself now saying that 8 million people signed up after the deadline. remember, there were more people who were caught up in that last-minute computer snafu. so they've now counted all of the signp just 8 million people just over a third of those, 35% were under 35 years old. so, the white house and the president doing a big victory lap on this. on the other hand, republican critics have not given up. they say a lot of outstanding questions about this 8 million. if you take out the kids under 35, it's only 28% of healthy adults, young adults who signed up and that's below the initial projections.

they're also wondering if people may soon find out that their doctors aren'ted covered and their premiums may go up after this fall, which is what some of the predictions have been. so, they are still pushing to get rid of the affordable care act. you can bet this is going to be huge election issue. it fires up the republican base, democrats are claiming victory and we just got a few months left until november's election. scott? >> tracie potts, live in washington, thank you much. well, the woman who many republicans blame for the botched rollout of the healthcare.gov website says she will not run for u.s. senate. reporting health and human services secretary kathleen sebelius will not continue a run for the senate. sebelius stepped down from her high-profile cabinet job earlier this month. the lawyer who defended california's ban on gay marriage is helping his daughter plan her wedding to another woman. attorney charles cooper says his

views on the issue are, "evolving." he argued before the supreme court and his stepdaughter plans to marry her partner in june. currently same-sex marriage is legal in 17 states. well, right now we do want to get a look at 6:33. our forecast here as we approach this holiday weekend for a lot of folks. christina, sounds like it's shaping up to be pretty nice. >> one of those holidays where we like to get outdoors and one of those years where it is going to be really nice. weather will accommodate all your plans very nicely this year. 50 degrees in half-moon bay to kick off the day and an indication of a nice, clear sky. want to show you that here from our live camera positioned at at&t park overlooking mccovey cove and ripples out there on the water. that's an indication of a little bit of wind this morning. want to show you san jose now. we've got a little bit of haze out here. over all starting mostly clear and going to be a nice, nice

day. 74 for the peninsula and starting to get a little glimpse of the sunrise here. east bay 76 and 72 degrees in the north bay with changes coming our way. today basically a repeat performance of what we saw yesterday, sunny and pleasant. as we head through this weekend, mild saturday and then eight to ten degree jump for your easter sunday. and then we're tracking april showers as we head through next week. stick around and i'll show you that in my forecast. let's check your drive and see if it's friday lights. here's mike. >> in a nutshell, it is. we had a weird problem and why it stood out so much. looking at the palo alto camera and those headlights northbound coming off morgan expressway and just past where we can see it and towards university avenue. that was completely empty as they took the shot and then the map, let's show you this. this area still shows all that red, that really stood out on the map because, look at this, northbound 101 out of mountain view and past highway 85 all the

way up towards organ expressway just before we got to the camera shot is the only red in the entire bay area. look at the roadways we were able to determine something was going on. two-car crash with one of the cars with a broken axle couldn't get out of the roadways very quickly. probably had a traffic wreck, as well. chp didn't specify, i'm guessing that's exactly what happened there. over here at the bay bridge, we talk about the build, as well. smooth, easy drive down the east shore freeway and slowing up the incline and live shot we'll show you. backup in the cash lanes and now just backup in the fastrak lanes. they felt the need to do so based on the traffic flow and not only the people in the fastrak backing up. if you pay a little more, get across a little faster today. get out of that fastrak lane. >> thanks, mike. still ahead, the water is clean, but oregon is going to get rid of it anyway. new details about a public yourination scandal.

and welcome back to you at 6:38. a live look at the coliseum. oakland a's take on the astros tonight 7:05 first pitch. well, if all goes as planned, a space-x rocket will lift off from florida this afternoon delivering two tons of supplies to the international space station. stormy weather is threatening today's launch. in fact, it could be pushed to tomorrow if the forecast doesn't improve. the craft original wednesday launch was scrapped when crew members discovered a leak. a small moon orbiting spa spacecraft that was built right here in silicon valley is no more. space controllers report that it crashed right into the backside of the moon. however, this crash it was all planned. it was launched in september and completed its main mission last month. the nation's first cross border airport terminal is coming to california. u.s. customs and border protections say it's reached an

agreement to connect an airport terminal from san diego to tijuana, mexico. construction has already begun on the mexican side. construction on the u.s. side will begin next month. and new details this morning after officials in portland say the water tested from the reservoir is clean. this after security cameras caught that 19-year-old man urinating into the reservoir through an iron fence. the suspect has been arrested for public urination and two other men arrested for trespassing. despite the clean testing, they will still drain that reservoir all to be wasted because of that one incident. some people in portland are saying that is ridiculous. >> 38 million gallons of water, i could probably survive. 6:40 right now. coming up, an update to breaking news. the deadliest disaster on the world's highest peak. we are live as the death toll climbs after an avalanche on mt. everest. also, if you've been shopping at michaels lately for some of those easter

disaster ever on mt. everest. so far 12 people have been confirmed dead. now, "today in the bay" bob redell joins us in studio for the very latest. >> scott, new numbers. now as many as 15 dead in what would be the worst disaster to strike mt. everest. 12 bodies have been recovered so far. another 3 are still missing. and an early morning avalanche that struck at a relatively low elevation on mt. everest, which is the world's tallest peak. you can see it right there in file video. all 15 climbers are sherpas and the mountain guides who help tourists up the mountain. they were bringing supplies up to camps one and two, which are stopping points, and they were killed when a wall of ice and snow buried them just short of camp. a producer with nbc happened to be at base camp and they just spoke with savannah guthrie on "today" show. >> just before 7:00, we heard an avalanche and it is a pretty

regular occurrence here, so nobody was shocked by that. when radio reports started coming off the mountain that people were stuck in the avalanche and everybody came out and started getting organized for the rescue. >> and, scott, as you were aware, the voice of america is reporting that there could be as many as 100 climbers north of the avalanche. so, they would be stuck there right now. >> so, i understand numbers. you have 13 confirmed dead, probably 15 are dead. >> correct. >> could go much higher than that. >> which would make it, even if it was just the 13, still the worst disaster on record, you'll recall in 1996 outlined "into thin air" a snow storm that killed eight people and that mountain in all, since people started climbing it. >> 100 above the avalanche and do we know anything about the weather? >> right now it is not in the rainy seize whn it gets really wet which is later in may. presumably the conditions are somewhat clear and, of course, you're on a mountain and ice and snow and avalanches are a

regular occurrence, unfortunately. >> bob redell, thank you very much. back here at home miking of a much different type here. but a body has been found and now the coroner will determine if the body is a hiker who has not been seen since wednesday. the marin county sheriff department said it matches the description of marie sanner. she and her dog joined a friend on a hike and the two later separated and sanner never made it back to her car. the dog found the car back in the parking lot and sat down next to it. that's when somebody discovered something might be amiss. >> found the dog and saw that the dog had some type of license or i.d. tag on it and called the number on it and wound up speaking to who turned out to be the subject's father. the father knowing that apparently these two are described as what are inseparable knew there was something wrong. >> investigators say that there were no signs of trauma. it is possible that the woman fell down a slick that is about 30 feet wide on the side of a

involved with the san leandro student. chang arranged a sexual meeting with a minor with the purpose of exposing himself and to commit lewd acts. chang is on mandatory unpaid leave. and the san jose man who accidentally left his baby alone in a hot car for about nine hours while he went to work likely will not face charges. the man was supposed to drop off his 9-month-old baby at a babysitter's home before going to work on wednesday. however, investigators say he simply forgot and parked his car on the street before going into work to restock vending machines. wednesday's high temperature was 81 degrees and the baby died. now, to an ongoing investigation into an over night crash. san leandro police trying to figure out how fast an suv was going when it crashed into a family of four in a sedan. the driver of the suv had been drinking. it happened on hisperian bu, tha red light and hit the sedan.

the four people in the car, including a 5-year-old and 8-year-old were taken to the hospital but should survive. a san jose man has died after a serious crash on almaden expressway near coleman road. he has not been officially identified, but investigators say he was taken off life support around 8:00 last night. taken to the hospital after a suburban collided with another suv. it's unclear who ran the red light, but investigators say the driver of the other suv had been drinking. prosecutors say a 21-year-old man threw a fire cracker into a crowd of people at at&t park. today he will face charges in court. investigators say he tossed a lit firework on to a walkway during wednesday night's baseball game against the dodgers. five people were injured, fans say they heard a loud bang, saw smoke over right center field and the game was postponed briefly during the investigation. all right, a massive security breach at michaels has

really got a lot of people concerned, as well as aaron brothers if you shop at either of those stores. 3 million credit and debit cards could be at risk, including many right here in the bay area. "today in the bay" christie smith joining us at a michaels store in san jose hit by some of those hackers. seems like we're hearing about this all the time now. how safe is it to shop with your credit or debit card? >> happy friday. michaels is saying it has hired a security firm, in fact, two, to look into this. they identified the problem and they say it is safe to shop at their stores but they certainly encourage you in light of what happened to go ahead and keep a close eye on your accounts and make sure there is no strange, suspicious activity, things you didn't buy. if so, you want to contact your bank and they also set up an 800 number for customers who have concerns about this. the security breach was at the system that processes debit and credit cards and it may have affected 2.6 million of those

cards and another 400,000 cards used as its subsidiary aaron brothers framing. now, the time frame that we're talki about this is roughly may 2013 and january of this year. dozens of stores right here in the bay area could be impacted, including five michael stores right here in san jose. on the store's website this morning, there is a letter from the ceo of the company that also explains that it does appear that personal information, names, addresses, pin numbers were not stolen in this, but a limited number of cards were used fraudulently, so, again, you want to keep an eye on your cards. michaels is also offering credit assistance and fraud protection for those who might need it. reporting live in san jose, christie smith, "today in the bay." >> christie, thank you so much. the secret service says it's pretty close to understanding how hackers access the personal information of millions of target customers, you might remember that back around the holidays. it could take years to find the

criminals behind the hack. federal investigators say even if they find out who did it, it is likely they're overseas making prosecution difficult. target is doing its own investigation into the breach. they think the thieves gained entry through a computer that was owned by one of its vendors. about 70 million people were victimized in last december's hack. 6:55. cost you a little bit more to ride uber. >> all based around safety, of course. the san francisco company says it's upping the price in the name of safety by adding a $1 safe ride fee. uber says the fee will cover costs of driver background checks and insurance. the company has been criticized over how it screens independent drivers and questioned who should be libel when a driver is between fares. not enough to check in on places on facebook, now the social media site telling you exactly where your friends are. >> how do you feel about that? facebook just rolled out the nearby friends app. an opt-in only on mobile devices. the tool uses location and which

of their friends groups can see if they are around. >> facebook project manager put it this way sharing your location with nearby friends goes two ways. you both have to turn on nearby friends and choose to share with each other to see when you're nearby. facebook has been testing this feature with a majority of its staff and it says it's ready to go. >> sometimes you don't want people to know you're around. >> sometimes. plenty of people want to buy google glass. >> if you'd like to try them on before you spend $1,500, you can be in luck here. the company reportedly trying a free home try-on pilot program. according to cnet, the company apparently sent e-mails to a number of potential customers inviting them to test it out. google then mailed a kit that includes all the frame styles and four available colors of glass. here's the deal, though, the devices are nonfunctioning. they are not computer enabled, meaning that you get to try them on and see how they look. what i want to know is how
