8:31 am
rebecca hall coming up. >> old journalism professor. >> congratulations. >> savannah gave the most incredible speech. it had me in tears. really meant a lot. >> it was awesome. and everyone said the same thing, you're the best kind of leader. you're the one that leads by example. i was really proud. >> i love you, my darling. don't make me cry again. >> meantime, natalie is running in monday's boston marathon as a part of our year-long rise to shine a light campaign. you've been training for months for that, in support of victims of the bombing and patients in need of prosthetic limbs. >> thanks to the generosity of
8:32 am
our viewers, it's unbelievable, we have raised to date more than $48,000. incredible. and this morning, we are adding to that. thank you, guys. thank you, everyone. so much for your donations. we're adding to that, though, because i'm wearing this, these awesome custom shoes from adidas. with these inspirational tweets all along them. you see "boston strong." incredible messages of inspiration. i'm going to be reading them as i run. >> you might trip. >> adidas has agreed to add to that amount, they're donating $10,000 to our charity. and these are really comfortable shoes. so there's still time for you to contribute. just log on to our website, crowdrise.com/natalie and you'll be entered for a chance to win these very -- these pair of shoes that are going to be signed monday after i'm done. you can get these. >> so you're going to sweat in those shoes. >> size eight, people. okay, maybe we'll get you a new pair if you want a new pair. >> all right, natalie, good luck on monday. we're rooting for you.
8:33 am
let's get a check of the weather. >> natalie, i asked you the other day, what would be the perfect weather for the marathon? >> mid 50s. >> and that's what you got. >> yea! perfect. >> light winds, too. so as you go over that heartbreak hill, you're not running up against that wind. temperatures by the afternoon warm into the 60s, but for most of the marathon, temperatures should be in the 40s and 50s. we are looking at partly cloudy skies. there is some rain that's going to linger on saturday, some rain lingering across the southeast. it's that frontal system that is going to sit out over the atlantic, producing a lot of clouds, off and on showers and t the rest of the country will start to dry out. things to improve by sunday on the east coast. temperatures should get back into the 60s and 0 8:33. happy friday to you. temperatures are already warming up nicely. look at san francisco. it's at 55 degrees, showing you
8:34 am
a live picture of at&t park. that sun already casting a shadow out here on the field. temperatures are going to be comfortable later on today. we'll hit the 70s. and as we head throughout the weekend, we've got some changes to tell you about. sunny and pleasant for today. 70s inland. mid-60s at the coast. we'll stay nice and mild for your saturday. an 8 to 10 degree jump on easter sunday. kicking off next week with some april showers. hope you have a fantastic weekend. >> we've got little ava here in a fleece bunny outfit, because it is that cold out here. but now we want to send it to someplace a whole lot warmer. we'll head on down to willard scott. willard? >> pleasure to have schmumucker your life for 100 years. happy birthday to esther krum from california. we love her. she is 100. a whole lot of shaking going on. i'm telling you. i couldn't believe it. marvin and ethel wiley from the
8:35 am
great state of iowa, where the tall corn grows. 77 years they've been married and they love watching the iowa hawkeyes every time they play, they're right there at the set. enid hyde, and she is from pierre, south dakota. 101 years old. we love her and wish her happy birthday. she's lived in the same house for 80 years. irving ernst from somerset, texas. he's been a cowboy and a rancher all of his life. take a look at pretty roberta wingfield, she is from bellflower, california. she is 100 years old today. laughter, she says, that's the secret to longevity. make you happy. a lot of people say that. george roth, a hollywood star, and he is from new milford, new jersey. 101 years old today. handsome man. and a diehard yankees fan.
8:36 am
go get 'em. now back to new york where the yankees live. >> that's right, willard. thanks. in "transcendence", paul bettany and rebecca hall play a couple characters who have the power to save him, but the question is should they? >> instead of creating an artificial intelligence, you duplicated an existing one. >> tell me you're joking. >> you recorded the monkey's brain activity and up loaded its consciousness like a song or movie. will's body is dying but his mind is a pattern of electrical signals that we can up load into him. >> he's not a monkey. >> good morning, guys. good to have you both here. you're both fantastic in this movie, by the way. >> thank you. >> let's talk about transcendence. up loading his brain into a computer. >> my husband in the film. i suppose it's up loading his
8:37 am
consciousness into the computer so that his being will live on after his actual physical death. >> you play evelyn, his wife, and you think this is a good idea for most of the movie. why do you support this? >> because it's her husband and she doesn't want to let go of him. i suppose that any of us are faced with a position of looking at a loved one passing and you have the medicine to make it better, it's very difficult not to make the choice to make it better. >> you've got johnny there for a little bit early in the film, but then you're acting against his image on a screen. tell me how you pulled that off? >> it was more unconventional than you think, because i was live-acting with him. they had him in the room next door and they were streaming his image on to the set. so it was like a giant skype ca call, basically. >> paul, you play max, the best friend here. at what buoyapoint when morgan freeman says get out of here, there's a turning point that this is not such a great idea.
8:38 am
>> well, i think it's -- you know, i think for max, it's the moment that johnny's character suddenly wants to get in line and start networking and start growing. and max begins to realize that he might have unleashed a monster on the world. >> there's a story i keep hearing about onset that you guys were in a car with elon musk from tesla. what happened? >> he was in one of the scenes, in one of the sort of tech conference scenes, and he really wanted to show us his tesla. >> his tesla. we wanted to see it. >> and johnny got in the front and the director and rebecca got in the back and there was no room for me. so johnny said come in on, you know, my lap. >> which is really practical because he's 6'5". >> exactly. so then we take off in this tesla, and we ran a stop sign. and then there were these blue
8:39 am
flashing lights suddenly behind us. >> you get pulled over by the cops. >> and johnny went, where is "tmz" when i finally do something good? >> they let you go? >> he just gave them a weren'tinweren't i -- warning. >> one of the producers pretended that they were the doubles. >> that you weren't the actual famous people? >> to be fair, the guy never noticed. >> he was looking at him like -- >> you look like johnny depp. >> really good double. >> that's a great story. thanks so much. congratulations on the film. it's called "transcendence." it's in theaters nationwide. up next, today's beauty school anti-aging treatments for $50 or less. but first, this is "today" on nbc.
8:40 am
8:41 am
we are back with "today's beauty school." look at the way to combat wrinkles, fade spots.
8:42 am
linda welsh from "allure" magazine is here with affordable anti-aging powerhouses for every woman at every age. linda, good morning to you. >> good morning to you. >> i love this idea of anti-aging, but does this stuff really work? >> it does, it does. some of it, you have to apply it very carefully and be smart about it and stick with it, but if you use it, it really does make a difference. >> three women all have a specific question. let's start with maricia. she is 29 years old and we are not lying, she's turning 30 tomorrow. what's your question? >> well, the biggest question and concern that i have, of course, is now that i'm leaving my 20s and all, i want to know what is a good preventative measure or something i can start with a skin care regimen to prevent wrinkles? >> well, i have good news for you because it's your birthday. you're not going to really have wrinkles for a long time. >> okay. >> because darker skin has more melanin and it has more built-in protection against wrinkles. but you do need to use a sunscreen because that's going to protect you from getting dark spots, which are other signs of aging. one of the ones i really like is
8:43 am
this coppertone clearly sheer. it's sheer on your skin. doesn't look chalky. you put makeup on top of it. but that's spf-50, but if you play that every day, then that's going to prevent the dark spots. you want to be sure also that you don't have any president obama to your skin like acne. >> i wish someone had told me this when i was 29. >> what else? >> then you can use a retinol product. olay makes a great one. you want to use a mild retinol. that helps build the collagen, which will protect your skin from the dark spots as well. so use that at night. you can use it all the way up to your eyelashes. >> you have to use your sunscreen. >> that's the hard part. >> we've got ladies from our plaza who are applying some of these very techniques as we speak. let's bring in renette. we have to say happy birthday to you. >> thank you so much. >> and you're turning 40 today. >> i am. >> 40 is awesome. >> thanks. >> what's your question? >> i'd like to know a little bit more about exfoliating.
8:44 am
how do you do it, how often should i do it? >> it's a good thing to ask right now, because as you get older, your skin cells don't slough off naturally the same way, so that can make you're skin look dull. you want to help it along a little bit. you can use an exfoliant, but you want to be sure how you pick it. some have shells or seeds, those are too rough. microbeads are now causing problems in the great lakes. use this pore cleanser. this is neutrogena. leave it on for a minute or two. that helps the skin cells slough off. and then at night, once a week, you can replace your regular nighttime moisturizer with this garnier peel. you put it on and when you wake up, it's like you're all bright and happy and cheerful. >> you'll have to be cheerful, too. don't forget that part.
8:45 am
cheer in a bottle. >> excellent. >> happy birthday and thank you so much. >> thank you. >> our final contestant is sharon. happy birthday sharon. you're turning 50, but i'm looking at your skin, i don't believe you. let's see some i.d. what's your question for linda? >> i have a problem with redness across my nose and in my cheeks. so i'd like to know how to combat that. >> so many things cause redness and it's really hard to address because it can be drinking wine, not that we do, but some people do. or having spicy foods. or when you're embarrassed or your exercise. so some of the things you can't do anything about. but what you can do is if you're really careful, you can apply an anti-redness product. this product is fantastic. it won an allure breakthrough award. if you apply it every night for 12 weeks, so you have to be good and patient with it, it actually helps the blood vessels underneath the skin contract and that causes less redness. >> how much do you put on? >> a little tiny bit. just the red spots. so 12 weeks later, you're just
8:46 am
going to be amazed. >> it's actually cooling, too. >> it is. >> sharon, thank you so much. happy birthday. >> thank you. >> ladies of the plaza, you look gorgeous. you look ten years younger just standing there. linda, you're ageless. really, you are. we're back in a moment. but this is "today" on nbc.
8:47 am
8:48 am
back now at 8:50 with the hottest fashion trends for spring at prices that you can afford. the folks at "vogue" magazine are out with their annual 100th under $100 guide on vogue.com. we have the website's fashion designer. under $100, all the pieces you're going to show us. >> exactly. we've taken the aspirational fashion from the pages of "vogue" and made it accessible for every budget. >> let's get right to it. first, flower power.
8:49 am
big trend we're seeing this season. so the flowers are sticking around. everything is in bloom. this gorgeous outfit on sherry. tell me about it. >> forget everything you know about dainty floral prints. this season it's about going bold and tropical. sherry is wearing this great look from zarra. you can take these pieces apart. that jacket would work just as well with an amazing skinny jean for the weekend or you could wear that dress to the office with a great cardigan. >> it looks great like this, but a lot of people might think too much floral, too overpowering so you could break it down. >> exactly. >> next up, let's take a look at flats. are flats the new thing? are they replacing the pumps? >> they are. and it's really great news. we saw them all over the runway. the good news is you can wear them with pretty much every outfit. we saw them with evening gowns. so for anybody who's really attached to their pump, i would suggest a great dainty flat like this, it's very audrey hepburn.
8:50 am
it's super chic. it dresses up every single look. >> i like the pointy toe look. is that one of the trends you're seeing a lot in flats? >> exactly. it makes it super feminine. i think going into the siummer, we're looking for a great summer sandal. this season what you want to think about, instead of a nude sandal, a great metallic. the great thing about metallics is they go with everything and flatter every skin tone. >> i like all the prints that we're seeing as well. congratulations print graphic prints, that's our next trend. we're seeing a lot of black and white, but you say pair it with some red, too. >> i think to bring these graphic prints alive, you want to add a great pop of color. britney is wearing a blouse from mango. her jeans are from guess and her shoes are from aldo. you might not be into red, but you can always pair a graphic print with your favorite color. >> i love these pants with the flowers on back. those are great. you mix and match with that look as well.
8:51 am
>> exactly. >> now moving over to our next trend right here, and we're talking about bold jewelry. >> bold jewelry is one of my favorite trends, just because you take all of the summer dresses that you had last season and give them the complete revamp. so i would say don't be afraid to go big. don't be afraid to go bold. i love a cocktail ring. >> these are great. >> this one by sequin is one of my favorites. you can wear a handful of these and it looks just great when you keep the rest of your outfit simple. >> so you can chunk it up. >> exactly. >> last, the new feminine take on suiting. what are you seeing when it comes to suits? >> i think we have this idea of a suit being boring. but when you break it apart and add feminine touches, it can look really modern and fresh. i love the necklace that andy is wearing. it's from kenneth j. lane and she's wearing it with this vest and dress from mango and the shoes are from aldo. these are the pieces that are going to become your basics for the season, so you take this vest and wear it with a great
8:52 am
pair of leather pants and it becomes a completely different look. you can also pair with it the great trends we're seeing today. >> it looks like a very expensive outfit, but it's all under 100 bucks. you did your job well. thanks. coming up next, we're going to kick off the holiday weekend. a very special easter hug hunt on the plaza. lots of kids excited for this one. but first, this is "today" on nbc.
8:53 am
8:54 am
hello, kids! happy easter! and we're back on this good friday. go ahead, sit down. everybody excited for easter? >> hey, guys! >> what better way to kick off the easter weekend than with our very own easter egg hunt right here on the plaza. we've got some young helpers here who are ready to go. >> they are raring to go. you ready? >> one, two, three! >> go, go, go! >> here's one! >> i was sitting on one. here you go. >> go, go, go! >> awesome. >> natalie, you're not supposed to be stealing eggs from
8:55 am
children. >> come over here! there's more. >> willie, you're supposed to be helping, not competing. >> oh, my gosh. >> here's an egg. some in the mulch. >> dude, dude. >> you need more! you got it! come over here. >> look, look, look. >> here you go, buddy. >> it's a gold mine back here. >> that's a big one. >> oh, here! oh, here! >> there you go. >> here's another! here! >> this is exhausting. >> you can't hold anymore! here. here's one here. >> look here, sweetie. here's another one. >> that's a big one. >> you're going to need a new basket soon. >> there you go. >> need another basket? >> yes! >> here you go, dude. that's all you, man.
8:56 am
>> clearing them out. >> we didn't hide these well enough. some of the baskets are flowing over. >> is that it? come on back over! >> come on back. whoo! >> all right, guys, we want to thank our friends at pier 1 imports for all the decoratio good morning to you. it is 8:56. i'm peggy bunker. still no word this morning on what caused the lights to go out at the shark tank about 45 minutes before the start of the shark's first playoff game this year. the outage did delay warm-ups by about ten minutes, but then the game started right on time and it didn't snag the sharks at all. they won that game 6-3. a little outage, no problem for the sharks. they still brought it home.
8:57 am
>> they sure did and we are proud of them. taking a live look at san jose, where we have a few puffy clouds overhead. in fact, it's actually cloudier here in the south bay than what we're getting over san francisco. look at at&t park, crystal clear at this hour, with temperatures in the mid-70s. tomorrow, more of the same and a big jump on sunday.
8:58 am
8:59 am
9:00 am
from nbc news, this is "today's take" with al roker, natalie morales, willie geist, and tamron hall. live from studio 1a in rockefeller plaza. >> welcome to "today" on this good friday morning. it's april 18th, 2014. i'm willie geist along with natalie morales and tamron hall. al will be back with us on monday. we look forward to getting him back. hope you're having a great start to your easter weekend. there's a lot going on in the news. we're going to talk about a lot. there's russia. there's the affordable care act. and then in one of today's papers, there's natalie's butt. i didn't say it. >> oh, my. >> i didn't say it. they said it. >> the "new york daily news," if we could just -- there it is. >> well, that's not her butt.
9:01 am
>> no ifs, ands or butts. >> would you go along with me on this? >> there are a lot of disappointed people when you mention her butt and it's that. >> the story is about the boston marathon and running the marathon. >> the tie-in, the part about your become side -- >> there's a little injury going on. runner's butt. we talked about this the other day. but it will be fine because the adrenaline is going to get me through it. you know, it's going to be such an incredible -- i can't wait until monday. i'm, like, excited a e ed and n and anxious. i've got to start carb loading. >> how does it work? >> what's the process? >> because we don't do marathon. >> next year i'm signing you up. >> you tried that last year. >> i'm done with the heavy training. i've been enjoying a week of tapering, which is the best. just light mileage. a couple of miles here and there. >> light mileage. >> and then i get to carb load on sunday. people think oh, you're going to have this huge pasta plate.
9:02 am
no, you don't want to have a big, heavy stomach going into the race. some light pasta and protein. >> and then morning of, what does that look like? >> morning of, i'm on with you guys. it will be early. >> what do you eat before a marathon? what do you do? very little? >> like oatmeal or a bagel, banana, cup of coffee. i've got to have coffee. can't take that away. and water. lots of water. >> you have some lucky shoes you showed us earlier. these amazing sneakers. >> aren't they great? >> they have special quotes on them. that's pretty cool. >> they're the adidas, they're custom made for me for this race. first of all, i'm super excited because they're really comfortable, too. but what's really great is they have the inspirational -- they have #weallrunboston, but then they also have really great tweets from everyone over the last year. >> look down for a little inspiration. >> like okay, at so and so, i can keep doing this. >> we are going to be rooting
9:03 am
for you. >> we raised, by the way, $50,000. it's really amazing. >> and you can still do it. crowdrise.com/natalie. >> exactly. so thank you to all of the generous people out there who donated. it goes a long way to helping people with disabilities and who want to take on sports. >> awesome cause. >> you have a play list, right? >> i absolutely have to have a good play list. especially when you're running like three and a half hours, four hours long. this is one of my all-time favorite songs in the world. >> oh, coldplay. >> makes me want to go for a run right now. >> the you put that on repeat? >> i've got it mixed in there. i've got a lot of coldplay. love them. >> so when we see you bobbing your head, we'll know. it's coldplay. >> isle be thinking "viva la vida." >> we will be there with you stride for stride. >> i think we'll be live tweeting position-wise where i am monday, so you guys can
9:04 am
follow along. >> excellent. one of the stories we were talking about yesterday was chelsea clinton. >> the speculation. >> she said well, maybe i'll run after she was asked for the millionth time. yesterday she actually did have some news, some real news. she made an announcement. watch. >> marc and i are very excited that we have our first child arriving later this year. [ cheers and applause ] >> making the public announcement. seated next to her mother hillary clinton. she and her husband marc have been married about four years. president clinton tweeted saying excited to add a new line to my twitter bio, grandfather-to-be. hillary clinton and i are so happy for chelsea and marc. hillary then tweeted, my most exciting title yet, grandmother-to-be. bill clinton and i are thrilled that chelsea and marc are expecting their first child. chelsea clinton is an nbc news special correspondent on top of everything else. we extend our congratulations. >> that's great. >> excited for her. >> yesterday we were talking and natalie said something about well, sooner or later, it's
9:05 am
going to be baby. as soon as i heard the news yesterday, i said natalie called it. >> i am one of those. it's weird. remember when kate middleton cut her bangs. she ended up cutting her bangs right as she announced the very next day that she was pregnant. i said on the air, well it's interesting she's cutting her bangs. maybe she's trying to hide the fact that she's pregnant. and sure enough, she announced she was pregnant. so maybe there's a thing. if i say the word somebody's pregnant, it happens. >> you just have good reporter's instincts, good intuition. >> not at all. i think if you just say it enough. >> throw enough stuff out there, something will stick, right? >> i love that. although willie will never be pregnant. >> i don't think so. no. i would be very surprised. >> i would be impressed. something that is impressive, i guess to some people, facebook. they've announced a new feature called nearby friends. okay, so here's the deal. it will be available on facebook's mobile app. it allows you to see which of
9:06 am
your friends is close by, and even share your location. you have to opt in to this. so the app won't specify a distance closer than a half mile. but it can discover people that are much further away. even on separate coasts. so you can be on the east coast, know your friend on the west coast, because you know what coast -- i don't know why i felt the need to explain that. show you exact location to a friend by sharing your location on the map for a set amount of time. because i don't work with facebook, i'm not going to be bothered with all these details. the bottom line is i was kind of creeped out by this. once you opt in, you do have control. you can opt in or opt out or whatever, but you don't know when the person has received the alert of where you are. >> and could you track, like, ex-boyfriends or ex-girlfriends? >> if you're creepy. >> and we are. >> that's how people are going to use it. where is she going right now? >> so hopefully you de-friend the ex. >> you would hope. >> so you have to go through all these stages of elimination so
9:07 am
that the right people know where you are. >> i would not want that on my -- >> we did a piece for the "today" show on that location services. i didn't know at the time that you had to turn it off. and i was all freaked out by that. i was tweeting from my home one day and it showed exactly where i lived and i could not believe it. so anyway, a further connection to friends. >> the good news is it's a choice. if you don't want this option, you turn it off. but it still is -- i mean, this presumption that we now have that everyone always wants to know where we are at all times so we can make that connection. if you like it, good for you, have fun with it. but isn't there something nice about people not knowing where you are? >> of course. just saying. >> you don't mean you're dipping in somewhere, but you just don't want to -- >> hey, i saw you were at the bar in the west village, i thought i'd come join you for a drink. >> exactly. >> or if you call in sick and you're like oh, i'm home sick. but then you're at sachs.
9:08 am
>> how many people do you think will forget it's on? you opt in, you forgot who you opt in, and then you're there somewhere. >> i think it's creepy. >> i the, too. there is a very strange homework assignment that has prompted a lot of discussion. this is at a school in el paso, texas, called paso dale elementary. on tuesday, the fourth grade assignment was -- they asked students to read a series of paragraphs and answer questions about them. no problem with that. it was supposed to test the children's inference skills, mean wlag do you take away from this situation? some ofparagraphs described very adult samples. i'm going to read to you an example. ruby sat on the bed she shared with her husband holding a hair clip. there was something mysterious and powerful about the cheaply manufactured clip that she was fondling suspiciously. she didn't recognize the hair clip. so students are then asked why is ruby so affected by the hair
9:09 am
clip? >> so daddy's having an affair. >> they're supposed to infer that daddy's cheating on mommy. >> wow. >> fourth grade is 9 and 10-year-olds. >> it would be as if i were reading hishomework assignment. i would be shocked, horrified. >> i mean, they went out of their way. you could make up a million scenarios to teach reading inference. >> and we'll talk about some of the criticism coming, but a lot of people saying kids are growing up more quickly these days. they're being faced with much more adult scenarios these days so maybe it's a good way to prepare them. >> who said that? >> some people. >> who are these some people? >> some people. but i will tell you the school doesn't feel this way. the school district doesn't feel this way. a lot of people told us the assignment they thought was unacceptable, apologized to the student and the parents. it said the campus administration has addressed the issue with the teacher as well. there was another scenario on that one as well, which was pretty shocking. it was a woman learning that her son had been killed overseas while deployed, and so it was
9:10 am
asking children to, again, come to the conclusion what happened in that story line. >> for a 9-year-old, that's a lot. >> it's heavy stuff. >> i think it's weird -- obviously that scenario is unbelievable. but i do think it's even more upsetting that there are people who believe that kids should know thousand come to the conclusion that your parent is having an affair. i said earlier i think the person who made this test obviously was going through something at home. we called that hector projector. you're going through it at home. drag everyone into your misery with the scenario. >> leave the fourth graders out of it. >> my fourth grader is just learning sex ed right now, so to have to deal with these very adult scenarios, i don't even think they would understand what that is. >> i'd be scared for the fourth grader concluded, oh, that means he's having an affair. >> how do you even know what that is? i'm glad they fixed that. let's talk about a happier story. window washers at chicago's
9:11 am
