nice sunday morning to you. thank you so much for joining us. i'm sam brock, in for kris sanchez this morning. the bay area is heating up. our sports team certainly and our weather. let's check in with anthony. >> happy easter to you. the thing about this morning, we're waking up to a little bit of cloud cover, most notably over the east bay, and every location really clear, but in dublic right now from our sky cam perspective, low clouds hugging up against the east bay mountains. overall, we're clear out today. temperatures right now in the 50s. a mild start to the day, and we're expecting temperatures even warmer than yesterday. in the north bay, 44 degrees right now. later on, you'll be at 82 in wine country. even san francisco today at 70. south bay in the 80s. even the trivalley later on this afternoon with the clouds, full sunshine later on. changes are coming, as you heard. by tomorrow, we drop by about 10 degrees. a noticeable drop in

temperatures and even cooler tuesday and wednesday because showers are in the forecast, and we are talking about another shot of showers as we head through friday of this upcoming week. quite an active pattern happening. we'll talk more about the showers returning in the full forecast in a bit. sam, back to you. >> thank you. developing this morning, a popular new bar and restaurant in downtown san jose becomes a crime scene after four people are stabbed. police say the violence occurred at sp2 communal bar and restaurant in san pedro scare just a few doors down from the old spaghetti factory. officers responded to reports of a stabbing at 1:00 where they found a man bleeding. they then learned three other people had been stabbed but were no longer on scene, leaving all sorts of questions. >> all we know is there was some type of fight, an argument that occurred inside the establishment before the person was stabbed. >> nbc bay area has learned all four men are in their 20s and have been taken to local

hospitals. police say two suffered minor injuries. the condition othf the other tw is unknown. >> a chp officer is recovering this morning after a very close call with a hit and run driver. the chp said it happened before 11:00 friday night on 101 in san jose. two officers were manning a dui detail and issuing a traffic ticket when a silver sedan came out of nowhere and sideswiped their patrol car, hitting one officer who flew into the other officer. the driver of the sedan then sped off. >> very serious. it could have killed or seriously injured the officers on seen. and obviously, it's a felony hit and run. and so it's very important that we find this person. >> the 25-year-old officer who was struck did suffer a minor leg injury but has been released from the hospital since. it's not known what the make or model of the silver sedan is, but it will have damage to the front right and right sides of the car. >> another officer in san

francisco is also recovering from minor injuries this morning after a police chase ends in a crash. officers say the two men are now under arrest and they may have robbed and fired shots at a home on balboa street saturday morning in the richmond district of san francisco. when officers spotted the suspect's vehicle, a chase ensued, ending with the two cars crashing into each other. one of the suspects was also injured in the crash. >> a deadly boating crash in a fishing tournament. the coast guard said it happened saturday before noon in brentwood. that's when two fishermen ended up in the water after they boat slammed into a bridge column. emergency crews immediately rescued one of the fishermen and divers searched for hours for the other man. around 5:30, the body of the missing mab was recovered. >> both went into one of the bridge supports. however, we're also looking into the possibility that the boat might have struck something

prior to that. >> and reports at this point indicate that both fishermen were wearing life jackets at the time of the accident. the contra costa county sheriff's office are trying to figure out what happened and why both fishermen did not survive. >> the university of california did something this year in its admissions that is essentially unprecedented. for the first time in the 146-year history, more latino students were accepted than white students. about 29% of freshman admitted for the fall are latino. 27% are caucasian. asian students still make up the higher percentage at 36%. in total, more than 61,000 in-state students were offered a spot at one of the nine campuses. that figure is also a record high. >> well, today, thousands of people are expected to fill up golden gate park to celebrate what is still at this point anyway an illegal recreational substance in california, pot. we're told there will be plenty of security. this is youtube video of last

year's party. april 20th, or 420 as it's commonly become, is a de facto holiday in the u.s. san francisco police said a year ago, there were fights, traffic jams and drug dealing. this year, officers will be on hand to make sure that everybody is safe. another big issue is the cost to clean up. last year, it cost $15,000 to tidy up the park after that event. >> a restaurant in the south bay is no longer serving alcohol, at least for a while. the bboss restaurant in east san jose has not only cut off the tap, it's also blacked out its windows and there's this notice that the liquor license has been suspended for 30 days. officer and undercover state agents have been watching the restaurant for the last few months. agents spotted several violations including lewd acts and selling alcohol after hours. >> much more ahead on today in the bay. up next, a bay area man was scaling mt. everest when a wall of ice came tumbling down. how his sherpa saved his life.

and disabled on holy thursday. this is his second easter alt pope. >> check out this unusual easter tradition in greece. two rival parished fire rockets at each other the night before the holiday. they're aiming at the rival village's church bell towers. the winner is the one hat scores the most direct hits on their rival's church. sounds like fun. >> well, he says he's lucky to be alive. a sonoma county man survived a deadly avalanche on mt. everest. he posted this photo with his sherpa on his blog. he was on the trail when the avalanche came down on friday. he said the sherpa pushed him down behind large blocks of ice, saving his life. he's at base camp and trying to decide whether to continue his climb. that avalanche killed 13 sherpas and there's still three people missing. we have new dramatic video of the moment that avalanche hit. >> new images, the moments an

avalanche tore down an everest pass, sweeping over the men who know this trail best, they are sherpas. their families spend the day waiting for their bodies to be returned. they come out one by one. >> a huge amount of guilt here among the western climbers these sherpas were carrying equipment for us and preparing the route for us. >> there are a series of camps. the avalanche happened between the base and camp one. it's the first major hurdle on the mountain. this is where the sherpas were climbing friday morning under vast walls of ice that suddenly came loose. >> i have been on that mountain many times, gone through the ice fall, and the sherpa usually leaves very early from base camp. they're all carrying loads of equipment to camp one, and they tend to like to climb close together. you know, they're friends. they work together. they know each other. >> climbers rush to help, bringing the injured down, and an nbc news crew was there,

preparing for a documentary for thedous corvey channel. all nbc employees are safe. more than 200 people, 80 sherpas have died on ufrbrist since it was first scaled. this girl's father now added to the list. she speaks of her sorrow and says simply, i am so very sad. rescuers brought down the latest body as climbers came out to pay their respect. the mountain is now closed for four days. some climbers say they will continue with the expedition. others have decided this was a wake-up call to the dangers of the mountain that has claimed too many of the lives of those who tried to scale it. >> perilous venture. a sad reminder of that there. much more ahead on today in the bay. coming up, playoff hockey powered by silicon valley. how one company is helping the sharks get an edge against l.a. and waking up to clearing conditions, even in san francisco this morning. we're talking about showers in

welcome back. 7:15 on your easter sunday. first, a live picture from dublin where it looks a little hazy for a clear view, we go to oakland. and a shot of that city's skyline. excitement permeates the air in the bay today. tonight is game two of the opening round of the stanley cup playoffs, and the sharks are hosting the l.a. kings. here's a live look at the shark tank where in less than 12 hours the puck will drop as team deal looks to take a 2-0 lead in the series. when the sharks take the ice, they'll have a silicon valley advantage, hopefully to give them a boost. our business and tech reporter hits the ice to show us how. >> the sharks still hit the ice to get ready for the playoffs,

marine cloud deck that pushed overhead. still clearing out right now in dublin with a temperature of 51 degrees. later on this afternoon, it is going to be a really warm day. temperatures are eggoto warm 4 to 8 degrees from yesterday. places like san francisco in the 60s yesterday, you're going to be in the 70s for today. even in the inland valleys, very warm, we're talking 80. here's a peek affwhat you can expect for each location. peninsula, 78. san francisco, 70. east bay at 79, and trivalley, you'll be the warmest with 83 degrees, and of course, yeah, that's close to 90. that's summer air. we're not used to, the averages are in the 60 for this time of year. very summer like later on this afternoon. let's get you to the microclimate forecast. it will be warm across the south bay. morgan hill, 63. peninsula, a few degrees cooler, but still warm. palo alto, 81. san francisco today, hays valley, you'll be at 71.

the marina district still in the 60s at 67. but in the north bay, napa will be at 83. santa rosa at 81. even in the east bay, oakland at 78, and there's a ball game happening, the astros in town taking on the oakland a's. first pitch around 1:00 will be 75. by the end of the day, temperatures fall back to the low 70s. 82 later on this afternoon in danville, you'll be at 81. a very warm day by all accounts. and it's because of this small area of high pressure. it's small enough to at least give us one day of some very warm weather, today, but it's going to break down for tomorrow, an area of low pressure starts to slide in and you'll notice with this, most of the rain will stay to our north this go-around, but i think we'll pick up a few sprinkles. maybe a shower here and there monday night into tuesday, as the thing passes over. tuesday morning, it moves out. i do think we'll have a few areas of lingering showers. in the morning hauers, but the

rainfall amoupts with this system are so small, i don't think most folks are going to find any showers. we may get a few cities that pick up a couple hundredths of an inch but that's about it. as we move towards thursday and friday of the upcoming week, another system on its heels. this is going to move through, have a better chance of picking up more substantial amounts, and this could actually stick around, not only for thursday night into friday, but all the way through saturday. this is great news. we need the rain, and wouldn't you know, it held off all the way until middle of spring. but we'll take it. back to you. >> we'll take it when it comes. all clear for the holiday. >> another general motors cover-up has been exposed. new government documents shows gm waited years to recall hundreds of thousands of cars. that is despite the fact they received thousands of complaints and repair complaints. they complained about power steering ten years ago. the first accident was reported seven years ago.

the unusually warm and dry winter we all just experiences was hard on people who make their living off the land. turns off it was also hard for the gardening dreams of one san jose man. gavin thomas has his unusual story this morning. >> big dreams sometimes require a big canvas. that perhaps the simplest answer to a question many who have passed this hillside over the

grace cathedral in san francisco as we await mass on easter sunday. good morning. thank you for joining us. i'm sam brock, in for kris sanchez today. a nice day on easter sunday, and whether you're headed to mass or to the market, what can you expect? let's check the forecast. >> it's going to be beautiful. in fact, we're waking up to clearer conditions across most of the bay. we still have low clouds positioned kroos the east bay, especially in dublin where we're trying to clear out from the marine layer from the morning, especially last night. lots of low clouds. but we have cleared out, virtually, even in san jose. clear conditions. not a cloud in the sky. later on this afternoon, it's going to be remarkably warmer. 80s across the inland valleys which is about 15 degrees above where we should be for this time of year, even in san francisco today, near 70 degrees now. if this has you thinking about the beach, there is a high surf advisory in effect for today. it's mainly just because we're

going to be looking at waves that could get up to 10, even 15 to 18 feet. right now, only at about 7 feet, but definitely with temperatures in the 70s from point reyes to santa cruz, take it easy if you have the day off to enjoy the beach. >> thank you, anthony. now to new developments in the ferry disaster in south korea. search crews recovered 13 more bodies today, bringing the death toll to 46. details on how the divers managed to enter the capsized ship where the bodies were found were not immediately available. more than 300 people are missing or have been declared dead after that ferry sank off the coast of south korea on wednesday. angry relatives of missing passengers fought with police as they tried to get to the presidential blue house in seoul. they are upset, clearly, over the slow pace of the rescue operation. >> another landslide is threatening lives. this one in a wyoming resort town. for two weeks many people in the town of jackson have kept a close eye on a hillside that has

been slowly crumbling away. emergency crews abandoned efforts to stabilize the hill after it gave way and destroyed a vacant home. the landslide has become an object of fascination as well as worry for the city of 10,000 people. >> this is kind of a big deal for the town. businesses are freaking out. everyone wants to see this happen. the highway could get shut down. you never know. a land slide. >> several homes have been evacuated, and businesses at the bottom of the hill have shut down. >> runners and other competitors across the nation are using the holiday to prepare for tomorrow's big race, the boston marathon. it's a milestone for the runners and the city as well after last year's bombings which captured three lives and injured hundreds of other people. about 10,000 runners showed up at yesterday's 5k race and a tribute run for the survivors of last year's attack also drew a crowd of thousands. >> i was able to cross the

hotel. >> i started grabbing things in the order i knew, because they said 15 minutes. >> last summer's rim fire forced them to evacuate the inn that's been in the family for decades. they never expected to return. >> his response was, well, honey, i gsz the lord has different plans for us. we're done, because we really thought this place was going to be gone. >> once they came back, the yosemite riverside inn was still standing. the siding melted and the fire crept up to the cabins, but it was standing. >> very devastating to see how close your property actually came. >> but 400 square miles of trees and woods are now blackened moonscapes. everywhere, rust colored leaves and pine needles reveal the fire's path. it's like an island surrounded by charred forest. >> it's hard, especially for our kids. they want to be out roaming like they always have, and they're very confined. >> but amid the destruction are signs of life. acres of burn ed trees are now

being milled and sold for lumber. >> along our right of way, we were able to sell some of the timber, the hazard trees along the power distribution right of way. >> san francisco's public utilities commission sold burned timber from its land to help offset the damage to a pair of hydroelectric plants on the water system. >> we had our main distribution lines that basically transmit power between facilities. most of those distribution lines, well, all of the lines were damaged and downed by the fire activity. >> the fire forced the plant offline for about two weeks immediately after the utility went about replacing hundreds of wooden power poles and transmission lines. >> this is our suites over here. >> now, as the tourist season approaches, business owners wonder if the visitors will return. >> i think a lot of people want to come see where the fire took place. >> see what happened. >> errand has heard about the rim fire. >> the family knows life will eventually return to the blac n

giants could only muster one more run as the offense continues to sputter along. the padres win this 13-1. >> much more ahead on today in the bay. the california primaries are quickly approaching, so the question is, who is voting and maybe more significantly, who is not voting? coming up, we'll go inside the numbers with our political analyst, dr. larry gerston. stay with us.

with the june 3rd california primary upon us, some of us will be more likely to vote than others. larry gerston joins us now with numbers and the meaning behind them. larry, the election is open to everybody, but is everybody going to be going out and casting their votes? >> the funny thing is, it'sope toon everybody, but real difference, sam, lies in the difference between the population of the state and who actually turns out to vote. >> so what's the discrepancy? >> take a look at the numbers

and you'll see. the numbers in terms of the demographic breakdown. here's where we are in california. whites and latinos just about even. latinos, by the way, became the largest group last month. pacific islanders/asian, 14%, and african-americans and others 7%. the non-hispanic wite and latinos are about the same size. now take a look at the rest. take a look atthex pkted voters. the u.n.s we expect to see come out and vote. what do we happen to find out now? now hispanic whites are 39% expected. 60% of non-hispanic whites. latinos, 40%, expected, 20%. so what do we see? the same thing, african-americans. about the same. so when it comes down to the actual vote, whites will dominate, although not, i might add, not nearly as much as they did a decade ago. when they were not 60% but 70% of the vote.

a big difference between who we are and who turns out. >> white voters are over indexing and latino voters are under indexing. >> one factor, citizenship, sure, of course, large numbers of latinos aren't citizens. therefore, not eligible to vote. okay. the second number, centers on age. latinos and to a lesser degree, asian americans are dr disproportionately young and not able to vote. a third factor is lower income people tend not to vote as much as people with higher incomes. so latino incomes, lower than those of whites, that's another reason they don't vote. all these things, put them together, and you begin to see why one group votes much more than others. >> what's the takeaway? how does this affect the political landscape in california in federal elections as well. >> cause and effect, my friend. we're likely to see nominations that are more reflective of who

turns out than the population at large. those people nominated, they're going to turn the office holders into members, and they're in turn going to be responsible for policy making for the next two years. policies, by the way, that may reflect the values of those in office more than those of the state as a whole. >> it's a relevant topic to take on now because of the fact that we are exactly one year out now from the unveiling of the senate immigration reform bill, which by the way, still hasn't been touched by the house of representatives despite tons of talk from leadership they would take it on piecemeal, and that has not happened. what's going on and has that helped to alienate to some level the latino population in this state and others? >> no doubt about it, a lot of blood letting in terms of the republican composition, the majority of the house. john boehner, the sepeaker, say he wants to move it. eric cantor, the next guy in line, says it ain't going to happen. it shows you the impact of the tea party in the republican-dominated house and the fact the republicans themselves are so divided over

this. fast forward. >> if i may quickly, there's a dich dichotmy between institutional republicans who would like to see moderate reform and the far right which wants nothing but stronger security measures? >> that's the breakdown. we could call them establishment, tea party, far right, but that in fact is the break down. fast forward. i don't think we're going to see that much of a difference in 2014 because of the way congress is set up. remember, we vote for 535 members of the house, and that district by district by district. we are likely to see, unless there's some sort of change, we aren't likely to see a major impact in terms of 2016. let's remember, let's remember that barack obama in 2012 received 71% of latino vote. that is now the largest minority in this country. you cannot ignore this kind of group. >> that would republicans to try to reach a deal with democrats on immigration reform to try to fold some of those latino voters into their camp, but that hasn't happened.

>> not yet. we have latino leaders who are republican, no doubt about it. look around at florida, for example, marco rubio, but the fact of the matter is until republicans actually put themselves in the position of somehow passing some form of immigration reform, they're going to be at a disadvantage. >> let me ask you about one other thing, which is the issue of deportations. a hot button issue under the obama administration, which has said it espouses for the rights of immigrants, undocumented workers here in the state, and yet the numbers don't seem to match up. we'll show you images right now of protests in the last couple weeks, this is in oakland and san francisco here. a large demonstration, also one in san jose of people saying, wait a minute, under the obama administration we've seen the largest number of deportations ever under any administration? you're supposed to be fighting on our behalf. what's going on here? why the disconnect? >> it seems like disconnect and for many it is. the fact of the matter is the president is moving for comprehensive immigration reform

program. in the meantime, he's got to watch it, and the fact of the matter is there are plenty of people who are upset with the number of illegal immigrant in the country, 11 million or so, so somehow while he pushes for this, he has to appear he's honoring the law. >> this is political calculus, is this what you're telling me? >> almost everything these days now. the number of deportations has gone down over the last five years. not to the levels we saw in the bush administration, to be sure, but less. the fact of the matter is, however, as long as this administration is deporting, there will be reason for those pushing for comprehensive immigration reform to say, why are you doing one thing when in fact you're saying the other? that's something obama has to live with. >> one other thing that will be interesting is the fact after the primaries are over, maybe the republicans will be more willing to play ball in terms of comprehensive reform. that's one theory. we'll see. >> that's one window. the other is we have to wait until after 2014 elections. we have to wait and it will be interesting with major consequences one way or the

welcome back. 7:54 is the time right now. get you up to speed. if you're about to head out, temperature in the low 50s. low 40s in the north bay. a little chilly to start, overall, we'll see a warm day today. highs later on today are going to rival that of summerlike temperatures. in fact, our average high is like in the 60s. 69 in san jose. and we're going to be at 81 later on. even in san francisco, average high for this time of year, 63. and we're going to be at 70. quite the warm day expected. it's all because of this small area of high pressure. the warm-up is going to be short lived because on the heels of that, that spin there, that's another area of low pressure, and there is our cold front that's going to move through, and that's expected to move through monday night into tuesday, bringing temperatures down about 15 degrees.

we're going to be back into the 60s, even the 50s at the coast come tuesday. so for today, again, a very warm day expected. south bay, in the 80s. peninsula in the upper 70s. san francisco at 70. our warmest location today is the tri-valley. 83 degrees. let's get you to the microclimate forecast. saratoga, 72. even san francisco, as i mentioned, 71 for hays valley. in the north bay, that's where you'll see some of the most extensive warming, especially considering we're in the 40s right now. later on, santa rosa at kwub. napa, 83. oakland, 78, and pleasanton, quite pleasant, 73. you'll need to make sure that you take it easy if you have to be outside for prolonged periods because 83 is about again, 15 degrees above average. here's comes the next storm system to the north. cold front going to move through, not overly impressive. you'll notice with the modeling, a lot of the shower activity stays north of the bay area. even though we're going to get

clipped by the system, i don't think we'll feel a lot of rain with it. when we see the rain, it's not going to be much. probably just get the ground wet and that's about it. this system monday night into tuesday, not going to offer a whole lot of rain, and most of us aren't going to see the shower activity. you'll notice a lot of the goose eggs here, most everybody is going to stay tdry. there will be a few places to get a few hundredths of an inch. the better news, thursday night into friday, another storm system sets up off the coast. this is going to move through friday into saturday. you'll notice more of a bull's eye coming right through the bay area. this one, i think, sam, is going to offer more substantial chance of rain. we'll keep watching it. in the meantime, enjoy today. nice and warm. back to you. >> probably recognize that face. that would be our very own christina, who kicked off the easter holiday in downtown campbell yesterday afternoon part of the bunnies and bonnets
