good morning. i'm richard lui on this tuesday. we begin with the ferry disaster off the south korean coast. the death toll has surpassed 100 now. the search for nearly 200 missing continues. mostly high school students. seven days into the operation, the pace of bodies being recovered has accelerated. now that divers finally succeeded in entering the ferry. families waiting at port brace for the worst. when one father identified his 15-year-old son's body, he tried to resuscitate him, pumping his chest and blowing into his mouth, yelling at him to stop sleeping. and today, one teenage girl just 17 years old was laid to rest. south korea's president offered support for the families, criticizing the ship's crew saying, quote, the action of the captain and some of the crew was incomprehensible, like murder, it can't be tolerated. the captain and several crew members have been arrested. the cause of the disaster is still under investigation. more than 40 al qaeda militants were killed in air

strikes and raids in yemen's southern regions over the weekend. at least two u.s. drones assisted in those strikes. the joint operation is the most aggressive counterterrorism activity in yemen in months. u.s. counterterrorism officials telling nbc news the air strike hit a full blown terrorism training camp. they praised the operations as, quote, efficient and well done, however, they also said there was no indication that any top al qaeda leaders were killed. vice president joe biden paying a visit to ukraine's acting president today. the vp is expected to announce new technical support to the ukrainian government that they can implement energy and economic reforms there. biden is the highest ranking u.s. official to visit the country since the crisis with russia began. the vice president's visit comes days after an international agreement was reached to quell violence in the country. the u.s. ambassador to ukraine warned yesterday that russia has, quote, days, not weeks, to abide by that agreement. some security questions are being raised after a 16-year-old from california was able to sneak into the wheel well of a plane and end up in hawaii.

airport officials and in san jose are reviewing how the teen was able to slip past security on sunday. nbc's joe fryer has more. >> reporter: sitting on a stretcher at a hawaiian airport, the 16-year-old stowaway was in surprisingly good health after he emerged from the plane. >> he was weak. he hung from the wheel well. and then he fell to the ground and regained in strength and stood up and started walking to the front of the aircraft. >> reporter: it all started here at the airport in san jose, it was 1:00 sunday morning after getting in a fight with relatives, officials say the boy scaled a fence somewhere here at the airport, making his way to a plane. federal sources tell nbcqú news surveillance video between gates two and three show the teen climbing into a plane's wheel well, unaware it was going to maui. the five hour hawaiian airline flights reaching altitudes of 38,000 feet. authorities say the stowaway was unconscious most of the trip. >> stowing away in the wheel

well of an airplane for a long flight is insanely perilous. it is just miraculous that this young man survived. >> reporter: the faa says there have been 105 stowaways worldwide since 1947. 76% did not survive. the san jose airport says its perimeter security meets federal requirements, but no system is 100%. >> it is possible to scale an airport perimeter fence line, especially under cover of darkness. and remain undetected. >> reporter: security expert jonathan tal says this is an issue for most airports. >> there hasn't been the investment needed in fencing and perimeter protection at san jose as there should be obviously. >> reporter: it is unclear what if any charges the teen could face, hawaiian officials are working to bring him home. a runaway stowaway lucky to get away alive. joe fryer, nbc news, san jose. taking you to monday now and nbc's brian williams, a guest on

northwest is getting some of this good old rain. we're filling up the reservoirs and using your umbrella for the second day in a row. it is coming down now on i-5. portland, northward, rain. only snow at the highest elevations. quarter, half an inch of rain. we're going to add to this significantly over the next two days. we had one storm system that is kicking through now. then we'll have another little warm front trying to bring in some moisture later on tonight and that looks like a soaking rain with it. a storm behind it too. so the bottom line was this weather pattern is the green on the map is the rain. it shows you the rain as we go throughout tuesday afternoon, evening, right along the coast. and then as we go into wednesday, notice it really doesn't move much. a lot of moisture available with this system. it is going to be with us for a while. as far as the forecast goes for your tuesday, showers and storms in the inner mountain west, maybe thunderstorms, but for the pacific northwest, it is going to be a cool, chilly rain. we're at 48 degrees and light rain right now in portland. in california, hit with a cooler air in place, a little bit

including nbc and its internet startup company they say is stealing and rebroadcasting their content without permission. nbc's tracie potts reports from washington. >> reporter: right now if you watch the major networks, you have to catch it live or record it on a dvr, often rented from the cable or satellite provider. now, there is ario. >> live broadcast tv to the internet, whenever and wherever we want it. >> this is piracy. you're picking up copy righted content that somebody else spent a lot of money to develop. >> reporter: broadcasters agree and they want the supreme court to decide. but ario argues they're not stealing programming, they're just renting thousands of tiny antennas to consumers who decide for themselves when, where and what to watch. >> and if they can pull this service down, which is so carefully designed to be legal, you'll have a spate of lawsuits. >> reporter: it is a case about

money too. broadcasters charge cable and satellite providers big bucks to rebroadcast those programs. ario pays nothing. and charges consumers as little as $8 a month. >> that was nbc's tracie potts reporting for us there. here are other stories making news. president obama will travel to washington state this morning. he'll meet with families and first responders from the deadly landslide a month ago. so far, 41 people have been confirmed dead. two people remain missing. two men in an affluent suburb of philadelphia are accused of running a drug ring aimed at high school students. marijuana, cocaine, ecstasy, hash oil, all sold to students at nearby high schools and colleges. according to prosecutors there. the two were arraigned yesterday after a four-month investigation. a scary scene in the salt lake city courtroom. a u.s. marshal shot and killed a defendant after he lunged at a witness with a pen. authorities say the defendant charged the stand, while the witness was testifying about gang initiation.

and how did he get there? a leopard on a rooftop in india. it charges people before darting away. they caught it and released it back into the wild. health news now, alcohol and tobacco tax and trade bureau backpedalling from its approval of palcohol. according to the associated press, the bureau says the approval of the powdered alcohol was made in error, but a company spokesman saying it is just a discrepancy with its labels and that there will be resubmitting them for approval. palcohol can be mixed with water or any liquid to create an instant alcoholic beverage in different flavors. mothers against drunk driving expressed concern here saying it may be attractive to young people.
