a very good morning to you, thanks for starting it out with us. i'm laura garcia-cannon. >> and i'm scott mcgrew. breaking news a children's hospital in afghanistan the site of a terrible shooting today. three americans have been killed and all of them are doctors and one of them a well respected children's doctor. it happened at the cure clinic in kabul. "today in the bay" peggy bunker is here with more. >> a second time this month that an afghan turned on a foreign civilian and this latest incident is especially sad. his visiting friends a father/son doctor team also shot in cold blood. the three americans were killed in the afghani capital by a rogue security officer at that children's hospital. it is a charitable children's hospital run by an american group that is based in pennsylvania. the doctor that was killed has been treating afghani children for seven years at the cure hospital, as it's called, making his death especially senseless.

a rogue cop or security officer and located in a very secure area right near the american university of afghanistan. he allegedly just walked in and shot the four americans, killing the three doctors. the fourth american that was shot was the son's wife. she was wounded, she had to undergo surgery and within the past hour we heard from the afghan health minister who gave us an update on her condition. the condition of the wounded woman who is also an american national is a nurse. she is now recovering. she is in stable condition and it looks like she's out of danger now. now, back at the beginning of this month. famed associated press photographer was killed at a standard police checkpoint while she was simply covering an election. she was with afghani soldiers at the time. they were supposed to be protecting her while on route to that election. just shot her and a canadian reporter in gold blood in what is also seen as a senseless

killing. . word there will be a press conference about the cure hospital and what they do and also about the shootings. once again, that is where the charity is based. back to you. >> all right, peggy, thank you much. at 6:02. new this morning san jose state student being treated for burns suffered after his apartment caught fire. happened a block away on east williams street. "today in the bay" christie smith joins us with more details on how the victim was alerted to the flames. >> imagine being found asleep it's around 11:15 at night and all of a sudden your cell phone rings and it's your roommate telling you to hurry up, wake up and get out because the apartment is on fire. that's what happened here overnight on the third floor. that roommate did make it out but suffered third degree burns. this is near san jose state university. many people who live here are students.

quickly grew into a second alarm at about 11:30 last night. firefighters say that roommate may have lit a candle talking on a cell phone at the time, got distracted, went in the other room and came back to find the apartment on fire. he may have actually flicked the match on to a couch and that may have started it. that's what they're looking into. neighbors say they heard the commotion. >> all of a sudden i hear some people yelling upstairs, help, fire department! i didn't really think what was going on until the hallway was bright red and i grabbed my phone and head out. put some pants on and time to go. i would rather be safe than sorry. >> one unit where that fire started is completely destroyed this morning and mainly by smoke and water. only one going in the building this morning and we're told the red cross has been out here

helping 11 people. that person who suffered the second degree burns is expected to make a full recovery. >> good thing they made it out. thanks so much, christie. speaking of the san jose fire department, a new report shows they may not be getting to the fires fast enough. making it to all emergencies within a certain amount of time, 80% of the time. the report reveals the department fell short of that and only made it on time 70% of the time. now, a spokesperson says the department is going to make some changes. >> getting to the rigs, getting out to the calls, putting in systems where we're changing lights. you know, when the apparatus and they're changing the lights to green in our direction so that we can get through the intersections quicker. >> in february, santa clara county fined the department for failing to meet response times for 911 calls. 6:05, an 85-year-old man is facing attempted murder charges this morning.

he is accused of opening fire inside a medical building on the peninsula. police arrested 84-year-old raymond at his home last night for allegedly firing off a shot inside sarah monte dental building in daly city. a doctor reported seeing a gunman and hearing a loud bang. the entire building was evacuated. officers say they found bullet fragments in the hallway, they're not saying what eventually led them to the suspect's house. a man claiming to be the biological father of teen suicide victim audrie pott is suing the girl's legal parents. he claims the girl's legal parents shealia and lawrence pott claimed to be the sole heirs in a lawsuit they filed after the teen's suicide. she committed suicide after she was sexually assaulted by three classmates. last year the potts filed a wrongful death lawsuit against

the suspect's parents for monetary damages. a flight who stowed away in a wheel well remains in a hospital this morning. he told san jose police he ran away because he was trying to find his mother in a refugee camp in somalia. the 15-year-old recently found out his mother was alive, even though his father reportedly told him she died. santa clara police officers interviewed the boy's family yesterday. the boy's family speaking out with the voice sumolly service. he said his son was always talking about going back to africa where his grapd parents live. we want to go back but due to our current living conditioness, we can't go back. he called his son a very quiet person. well, let us check the forecast and give you a live look at san jose. it's 6:07. home of the sharks, they are doing so well. still down in l.a. let's check in with christina. >> then the l.a. team, the

clippers are coming up here to take on our warriors tonight. we are so excited about that game. so, it's going to be one of those days. we want to beat l.a. in every way possible. we already are weatherwise. kick you off in san jose. a gorgeous start to your thursday and i want to show you the difference in san francisco, though, we have that gray start overcast sky overhead and these clouds will thicken up as we head throughout the day today, a storm system moving in. you'll notice, though, we're still nice and clear along the peninsula. that's the san mateo bridge and looking pretty good even in san rafael and blue sky to start the day and those temperatures comfortable because of that nice, warm start and mostly cloudy up in santa rosa, napa by 10:00 a.m. today. let's talk about the showers and take you through the changes for today. mostly cloudy conditions and you can see that as of lunchtime. showers hold off until the overnight hours except for up in sonoma county getting activity at that point between 9:00 p.m. and 11:00 p.m. and the bulk of the moisture in the morning drive tomorrow.

welcome back now. taking a live look at a clear start over the south bay and also pretty clear right now over emeryville. we have a cloudy sky on the way as of this afternoon. showers move in tonight and tomorrow at this time. we're tracking rain on the radar. i'll take you to the changes where you live in moments. and we'll give you this live look past, well, this is high street and the nimts freeway just north of the coliseum where the warriors are playing. expect post-work traffic because we have the playoff game going on tonight. we'll hear more about that in a live report coming up in just a couple of minutes. here's a look at today's top

stories. three american doctors are dead this morning after an afghan security guard opened fire inside a hospital in kabul. investigators say the officer was assigned to guard the women and children's hospital when he turned his weapon on hospital staff and started shooting. the gunman then shot himself, but he survived. he's now in custody. in san jose this morning, an sjsu student is recovering from burns after his apartment caught fire overnight. happened about a block from campus. firefighters say the victim's room mates lit a candle and the match he used likely sparked those flames. the red cross is now helping 11 other people forced from their homes. food and drug administration will announce new rules to regulate e-cigarettes. san francisco approved restricks on e-cigarettes and santa clara county are in the process of similar bans. now to the golden state warriors and their playoff run as we give you a live look at oracle arena. all quiet now. that is going to change a little

the first home game for the warriors in round one of this season's playoffs. game three. right now standing 1-1 with the los angeles clippers and i'm sure going to be glad to be coming back home here where they have a lot of fan support, especially with the sea of gold and blue, considering what happened monday night, not a pretty picture for curry and the rest of the guys where they lost the clippers, i don't know if lost is the right word. 138, 98. game three back here in the oracle arena as they try to regain some of that mojo and it's been a very good season. they won 51 games this season. it's been quite a while since they've had a season where they won at least 50 games. tickets for tonight's game are not sold out yet, but the team telling us this morning they do expect it to be a soldout game and if it is sold out, this would be the 80th consecutive sellout for the warriors. last time they had a sellout streak like that was back in

they go on sale may 10th. >> that is cool. speaking of the 49ers, the team's home game in santa clara will be on national television. 49ers will host the bears on sunday night football right here on nbc bay area september 14th. other notable games on the schedule, the chiefs and former 49ers qb alex smith in town october 5th and get ready for a thanksgiving night showdown the super bowl champion seattle seahawks make their first home visit and that game is only on nbc bay area and week 14, the 49ers head across the bay to take on the raiders. that will be the first game since those -- between the two teams since the fights broke out in candlestick park three years ago. the team's new quarterback will face his old one on september 14th. two weeks later the team will fly across the pond for a game in london against the dolphins. denver broncos will be in town

on november 9th and silver and black will travel to kansas city on december 14th. so, now, get the chips, dips, salsa going for the fall. >> and the wings. >> and the wings, you got it. let's check your forecast this morning as we give you a live look outside in fremont this morning. boy, we are going to have an interesting bit of weather, a lot of changing weather. >> i'm typically a pretty happy camper, but, yeah, like i said yesterday, because i get to do weather in the bay area. that's my job. hard not to be happy. the only thing we're not happy about in the weather department is this drought and as we head throughout tomorrow into tomorrow evening, we could accumulate maybe half of an inch of rainfall here in the south bay where our farmers really need it. now, a lot of this activity is going to break apart not impacting southern california. it's really going to be a south bay and east bay event. wait until i show you your

that 72 because that will turn over to 92 degrees as of next wednesday. a lot more to go over when it comes to that extended forecast. high pressure building in strong next week but that rain tomorrow morning and mike and i will be here to help guide you through it. he's always here for you. >> good morning, christina. using all the gauge and all the meters and such a change in the weather system. over here, nothing dramatic. northbound 101 and sorted itself out. 680 and the overcrossing and let's look on the maps. we had a slow down showing up right here, but now things are back up towards about 55 or 60 miles per hour and 87 shows a little sign of increased traffic flow and not a big deal for the south bay. slowest spot here for the tri-valley, west 580 continue to build towards the dublin interchange and no drama for 84 or coming out of the altamont pass. the rest of the bay, well, you see a little slowing and that's your typical build, actually not

to fremont, just to union city. the other side of the bay, peninsula side very smoothly, as well. a couple crossings. the maze moves smoothly but the red, we'll dwlglide out here. just before 6:00 all the lanes backed up and now these lanes off to the left just starting to ease off a little bit. that's standard for the morning. the san mateo bridge from the east bay we see a little haze in the air, but no big drama. west 92 moves smoothly and high rise you can see it and where it joins with 101 and 280 and the north bay, no delays southbound 101 through san rafael and into the city, as well. send it back to you. 6:22. still ahead "today in the bay" ronald mcdonald gets a new look. >> not that he needed one or anything. let's take a live look outside. it's a big s curve up in san rafael this morning. traffic appears to be moving smoothly. stick around, 6:22.

the battery in infant summer monitor can overheat and burn its customers. remove it and ask for a replacement. this is the second time the batteries in those monitors have been recalled since 2011. get ready to hear more from one of the world's most famous red heads. ronald mcdonald. >> so, the mcdonald icon is getting a twitter account. organizers say he will take an active role in social media using the ronald mcdonald hash tag. his main message will be fun makes great things happen. ronald, apparently, will also reportedly appear back in commercials later this year wearing new clothes, including yellow cargo pants and a red and white striped shirt. got to update it at some point. >> i would think a little more updated, though. some hbo shows available on amazon instant prime. side. show you what's going on for 280, as well. a live look at the opening bell. it is take your child to work day. ladies and gentlemen, the cubs of wall street. over on the nasdaq, great day for tech stocks. apple and nasdaq just killing it. this is "today in the bay." well, good morning, everyone. i'm scott mcgrew. >> i'm laura garcia-cannon. federal regulators are taking on e-cigarettes. the smokeless alternative to tobacco and the government has no idea what's in them or whether they're dangerous. tracie potts live in washington, d.c., where the fda now push to regulate them. good morning. >> good morning. five years ago they got the authority to regulate tobacco. this is round two. a number of products that are out there that the fda says it just doesn't know what's in them, like these e-cigarettes.

electronic cigarettes, essentially, a metal or a plastic tube with nicotine or water and other products that produce an odorless vapor. often flavored and that's one of the reasons why some advocates say they are concerned that they may be marketed to children. with what the fda is announcing today they would, number one, require these companies to register and couldn't issue any new products without getting approval first and they would also have to eventually take a look at advertising and internet sales. that's not something they're doing immediately, but immediately they would restrict these products so that people under 18 could not legally use them. e-cigarettes just one of the categories that they're looking at and this is a proposal, so it looks like it could be up to a year by the time they get public comment from the industry, from experts and from the public. sometimes it's up to a year before they come up with a final rule on how they want to get this done. >> but at least they're looking into it and saying they are.

your morning cup of coffee may give you more than just a caffeine jolt might shock your wallet, too. wholesale coffee prices shot up to a two-year high because of dry weather in brazil where a third of the world's coffee is produced. will it stop people from sipping, though? >> coffee and caffeine that is important for anybody. no matter -- gas $5, people are still buying. >> that's a good point. not going to stop me. prices expected to go up at grocery stores in the next month. >> a whole lot of coffee in brazil. not just coffee, but oj, too. florida citrus crops under attack from a tiny insect. growers say the bug is killing off the fruit in record numbers and carries a disease known as the citrus greening. it destroys the tree's root and branch system and just stops fruit from growing. this year's orange crop in florida expected to be the lowest in 30 years.

we may see higher orange juice prices later this year. a southern california city declaring a two-week cooling off period in the fight between neighbors and the maker of a popular hot sauce. irwin dale residents asked the city council to step in because they said the air around the sriracha plant was too spicy to build. tentatively, but unanimously ruled the two-year-old plant was, indeed, a public nuisance. but last night they decided to delay the final decision to shut it down for two weeks. if declared a nuisance, the factory would have to stop releasing the spicy smell or they would have to leave town. stay in town today and enjoy the forecast. 6:33 right now. let's take a live look outside san jose and san francisco on your right. sun coming up over the bay area making way for a nice day. rain in the works, as well. let's check win christina. >> springtime in the bay area and pollen levels pretty high as we get the rainfall overnight.

the pollen levels will drop off and nice, replenishing of our air quality, as well. all particulate gets laid down. as we head throughout the day today, temperatures on the chilly side to start, but not that bad. show you the difference between nouz and 24 hours ago. most of your cities are warmer. just 24 hours ago and as a result of starting out in those mid-50s you'll easily hitting the 70s. so, nice and clear in san jose right now and show you the difference as you can see we have an overcast sky over mccovey cove this morning and temperatures today are going to be pretty mild, not quite as warm as where we ended up yesterday. 72 degrees in the east bay and 62 degrees for san francisco today and as we head through tomorrow, showers in the works, especially for tomorrow morning. this weekend, sun and clouds, temperatures are going to be a touch cooler than where we're going to end up today. we'll see the 60s and then by next week that warm up is on and

welcome back after closely examining debris washed ashore the metal object is not from missing malaysian airlines flight 370. the debris found in augusta 200 miles south of perth where the search is hrveged. we're learning a robotic submarine is almost finished scanning a patch of the indian ocean and it's found nothing. searchers say more powerful sonar equipment will be brought in. malaysian airlines flight 370, of course, vanished 48 days ago with nearly 250 people onboard.

6:39. president obama says before the u.s. imposes new sanctions on russia, it needs support from its allies to make sure it will work. speaking from tokyo, the president accused russia of not abiding by the spirit of an agreement that was reached last week. aiming to ease tensions in ukraine. the comments were made after russia's foreign minister warned that attacks on russian interest in ukraine would bring a firm response. a mountain climber from northern california heading home actually surviving a deadly avalanche on mt. everest last week. john rider was making his second attempt to climb the world's highest peak before the avalanche killed 16 sherpas. the deadliest disaster on mt. everest and led to the remaining sherpas packing up and leaving town. with the climbing season in doubt, rider is headed home. 6:40 right now. coming up, we are continuing to follow breaking news. three americans shot and killed at a children's hospital in

freeway. smooth drive into san francisco and same from the north bay across the golden gate. back to you. >> thank you, mike. breaking news just in to the nbc bay area newsroom. we are now learning more about one of the american doctors killed when a security guard ambushed them at their own hospital in afghanistan this morning. it happened west of downtown kabul at a hospital that treats women and children. "today in the bay" peggy bunker live with what we learned about one of the doctors. good morning. >> good morning to you. one of the terrible stories and especially now that we identified one of the american doctors identified in kabul. a pediatrician who dedicated his life to treating children in his medical practice in chicago was shot and killed by a rogue security guard at the cure hospital, an american-run charity hospital in kabul, afghanistan. he worked at the lawndale christian health center in chicago for more than 16 years, according to their website. his biography talks about his love for pediatric medicine and

his strong, faith-based mission to serve afghanistan. left his job in 2005 and moved there to serve the people of kabul. that is where four americans were shot today and flea of them doctors and one a doctor's wife and she is said to be out of surgery and recovering. this is at the cure hospital. this is supposed to be in a secure area located in a walled compound difficult to access unless you have clearance. it specializes in treating children, neonatal babies and also maternal care and charitable and based on pediatric service and run by a group that is based in pennsylvania. the fact that this hospital operated solely to treat the mothers and children of afghanistan and serve as a teaching hospital makes these killings especially senseless. we have a reporter on the way to his home in chicago which he apparently continues to maintain. we know from his biography he has three grown children and not sure if one of those children was one of the doctors that was killed in kabul at the time of the shootings. two of the doctors were a

father/son medical team. details on that are still developing but finding out who these doctors were this morning. >> just staggering. thank you, peggy. >> sure. it is 6:50. new this morning a san jose state student is lucky to escape further injury during an apartment fire. thanks to some quick thinking by his roommate. happened about a block away from campus on east william street. "today in the bay" christie smith is live with what the roommate did that may have saved his life. good morning. >> one of the roommate was sound asleep inside the apartment when his cell phone rang. it was the roommate outside of the apartment saying, get out, get out because our apartment is on fire. sk so that roommate inside was able to jump out of bed and run right past the flames and get out. cell phone video of those flames that grew into a two-alarm fire here near san jose state. some of the debris is outside piled near the building this morning. that debris includes a couch

from inside that unit that burned overnight. that same roommate was on a cell phone talking andcandle and flicked that match which accidentally landed on that couch. a short time later the apartment was on fire this was around 11:30 at night. tried to put the fire out, didn't work. i just spoke with a student who said he was sleeping in the unit downstairs when someone started banging on the door. >> i said get out. we literally got out with the clothes on our back and we ran out with nothing, really. had no shoes. so, we kind of just ran out and then people called 911 and that's about it. >> now, that roommate who ran past the flames, he was burned, in fact, suffered second degree burns and the gentlemen we just spoke with said he saw the guys that he was walking out had injuries on his back and side and he was up and walking on his own. f

tim says he got back into his unit at about 3:00 this morning. the red cross, though, out here overnight helping about 11 people. he also mentioned, though, that this is really rough time for this to happen because quite a few of these students are going through midterms right now. reporting live in san jose, christie smith, "today in the bay." speaking of the san jose fire department a new report shows the department might not be getting to the calls fast enough. last year the fire department set a goal to making it to all emergencies in a certain amount of time 80% of the time. the report reveals the department fell short and only made it on time 70% of the time. now, a spokesperson says the department is going to make changes. >> at the same time on getting to the rigs, getting out to the calls, putting in systems where we're changing lights, you know, when the apparatus and our lights are on and they're changing the lights to green in our direction so that we can get through the intersections quicker. >> in february, santa clara

county fined the department for failing to meet response times for 911 calls. 6:53. the south bay teen stowed away on a hawaiian airlines flight remains in an oahu hospital this morning. he told police he ran away because he was trying to find his mother in a refumy camp in somalia. the 15-year-old recently found out his mother was alive even though his father reportedly told him she died. santa clara police officers interviewed the boy's family yesterday. in the meantime, the boy's father is finally speaking out in an interview with the voice of america sumolly service. the father says it is a miracle his son is alive. he says his son was "always talking about going back to africa where his grandparents live. we want to go back but due to the current living conditions, we can't go back." he called his son a very quiet person. new this morning, the ucsf children's hospital will launch a $100 million global initiative

today hoping to prevent premature births. premature birth is the leading cause of problems with newborns and the hope is the program will reduce the number of babies born early in health care for those who are. the program will focus on california and africa. it will last ten years and is funded by the bill and melinda gates foundation. supporters of a famous ice rink in san mateo will meet to talk about how to save the facility. we are talking about what used to be ice center on the foster city border. it has been closed for years, but used to be where the likes of kristi yamaguchi and debbie thomas practiced before they received their olympic medals. the owner wants to tear it down and replace it with one or more retail stores. golden state warriors and their playoff run. a live look at oracle arena this morning. it's all quiet now, but that's going to change in a little more than 12 hours when the warriors
