rats and now we have rats all because of this drought. >> it is absolutely bizarre how things keep changing for us. we keep getting all this rain towards the end of our rainy season, yet, the drought gets worse and worse every time i check. now, what happened yesterday that is really significant is the entire state of california has a drought on its hands. we did have a little bit of relief in the southeastern portion of the state. as of yesterday, that changed. temperature this morning here are nice and mild. we've got showers coming in, this will not put a dent in the drought. what might, though, is the potential for an el nino as we head throughout the winter. as we head throughout next winter, actually looking very promising every time i check. that is the one light at the end of the tunnel when it does come to the drought. that is ways out. today we're tracking the showers for you, widespread and will impact your morning drive and grab your umbrella because not just a morning event. the showers will continue, not

final say. smith made the alleged bomb threat earlier this month while going through airport security. possible bomb threat charges are not smith's only legal troubles. he'll be in a san jose courtroom next week for a hearing on felony weapons charges and drunk driving. smith is accused of shooting at people who would not leave a party at his house back in 2012. two people filed a lawsuit against smith and former 49er delaney walker claiming they were injured in that shooting. just yesterday one of those men reached an out of court settlement with smith and walker. you know, rain is in today's forecast, but the drought in california is still affecting all of us, even the animals, of course. 5:37 am
like a huge system, an el nino or something, christina. >> we could potentially get out of the drought over the course of one rainy season, if we get hit to six to seven maybe even eight powerful storm systems. you know what, the only way that could happen is if we see the el nino develop and it becomes a rainy season. that's potentially in the works for this next winter. that's what we're watching for for you we are on el nino watch and nbc bay area weather department. this morning we are watching those showers for you in addition to the rainfall coming through. we're tracking some thunder. now this is well to our north and the sacramento valley pushing over towards lake tahoe. however, a sign of the instability associated with this air mass and that chance is going to be heightened as we head throughout this afternoon. we accumulate that daytime heating and the chance for thunderstorms gets a little bit better. between the hours of lunchtime, noon, to about 3:00 p.m. if you're headed out, keep that in mind you could get caught. under a strong thunderstorm and that could be capable of
5:38 am
producing some hail. so, that's what we're watching for for today as we round out the month of april. actually accumulating more rain than average. it could actually go down as a record month, which is so bizarre. things have just been so unsteady in the bay area's weather. but things will change as we head into the summer months. as of next week, in fact, tracking the potential for fire weather. let's talk about the good news and that's the cool, cloudy day with showers continuing throughout the day and potentially half of an inch and maybe an inch of rainfall. up in the north bay, looking more like a quarter of an inch here in the south bay, but some places like los gatos, you could accumulate half of an inch. steady rainfall for that morning drive and highs in the 50s and 60s and need your jacket and umbrella for today and mostly clear conditions for this evening with another round of rain on the way late saturday into sunday. temperatures today are going to be chilly. 61 degrees. that's it for today in the north bay and upper 50s in the tri-valley and east bay and uniform numbers with this cold air moving onshore associated with this storm system.
5:39 am
your microclimate is not making a big difference temperature wise for today, but they will. yeah, we're talking record heat. just days away. i'll talk about that in my next report right now, let's check your droiv and it is rainy and could be slowing. here's mike inouye. >> looking towards fremont and turn the cameras south towards mission boulevard. taillights heading south into san jose. let's take them on the map here and see the green highlighting around the south bay maps because the damp roadways as christina talks about. a crash south 880 and sounds like everything is out of the lanes and they don't see slowing there or the rest of the south bay. the green highlighted just south of the dumbarton bridge and no big deal. the rest of smoothly and we see southbound 101 picking up a little company and moisture in the air, but not a big deal heading down towards the golden gate bridge. cdc taking extra measures after an increase in measles. we'll have details in a live report.
