6:01 am
look at it coming down earlier this morning in san jose. a lot of rain. a lot of slick roads out there, as well. >> that's for sure. meteorologist christina loren says this is only the beginning. >> dealing with it for the most part all the way through the next few hours. this is the bulk of the moisture coming through right now by about lunchtime today. we'll start to see these showers break apart and it won't be one steady green blob and you can also go ahead and keep in mind that once the system does start to move out of here, it will get windy. mostly at the coast for today. look at this, a very welcome sight. temperatures in the upper 50s and where we'll stay for many cities across the bay area. talk about the chance of thunderstorms for today. it could get very active here as we head into the afternoon hours. we'll talk about your weekend in moments. right now, back to you, peggy, laura and the top stories of the day. >> thank you very much. still talking about the rain, christina. it may help put an end to an unexpected problem that has popped up as a result of the

drought across the bay area. "today in the bay" chase cain live in san jose to explain. good morning, chase. >> good morning. when christina loren is talking about rain and maybe thunderstorms the first thing that pops into your mind is probably not the word drought but we are in bad shape here in california. and, in fact, bringing some critters, rodents, pests out from hiding to find water. in fact, just on the other side of montgomery hill park at evergreen college, someone spotted a four-foot rattlesnake and in san francisco, people are dealing with rats. they say that they are seeing a lot more of them than usual and, again, it's because those rats are looking for water. hopefully they should be able to find that today. but, again, the underlying problem here is the severe drought. in fact, some paleo climentologists believe california is in the middle of its worst drought in some five centuries. that's pretty extraordinary. everyone from the water systems to even cal fire has been worried about the drought and what it could mean, especially as we head into our dry season this summer. right now, 7 7% of the state is
6:03 am
in either extreme or exceptional drought. last week just 67% of the state was at those levels. so, things are getting worse and, again, it is bringing those rodents out from hiding. >> there's no water source for them right now. so, they're going outside to get it. they eat plants and they eat meat, but they're going to the dog parks because there's water bowls. they're going to the horse stables because there's water. >> take a look at the u.s. drought monitor. these are the latest numbers released just yesterday. it puts most of the bay area, basically from san francisco southward in d-4. that is the exceptional drought. the highest level of drought which they measure. and that does stretch into the central valley, which is, of course, where we get so much of our food. we are in pretty bad shape here. the first time in the 15-year history that the entire state of california has been in some level of drought. that is worth noting, no doubt.
6:04 am
as i mentioned a moment ago, rattlesnake. four-foot rattlesnake spotted just on the other side of the park here. some people in montgomery hill park or students on campus are being urged to watch out as som of these dangerous animal comes out and look for water. i've been watching my feet. >> you have your boots on this morning. >> i need them, i need them. >> a lot of creatures out there by evergreen. pigs, coyotes. >> we have been hearing them. we have been hearing coyotes howl for the past hour. >> kind of a frightening sound out there. >> no one waiting for day break more than chase cain. an update to breaking news. let's take you to new video here that shows a large debris field around the site of a natural gas explosion in washington state. this happened at a pizza shop that was under construction in northbound washington, that's about 30 miles east of seattle, a bit of a small town there. our nbc station in seattle tells us that the explosion sent several neighboring buildings on fire and all the flames appear

6:32 am
also, they note there's an entirely younger generation of parents and doctors who've never even seen measles. number one if the parents are concerned or sort of an attitude of no fear because they haven't really lived through half a million people every year being sick and if doctors really know they don't know what it looks like, they have. seen it before and a whole re-education effort on that. bottom line, the cdc says we're in the middle of what appears to be a brand-new outbreak. a comeback of measles. something that some people have never seen. others haven't seen for decades. >> we're only seeing it now because we've had the vaccinations to prevent it for the past few decades. thank you so much, tracie. it is 6:32. a retired supreme court justice says marijuana should be legalized. 94-year-old john paul stevens says public opinion has changed on the issue and there isn't much of a difference between alcohol and marijuana. he says prohibition against alcohol is generally thought not
