little kid, it is a form, and it says dear -- and they write out the name, thank you for the -- and it doesn't have to be -- the idea of being -- >> you can draw a picture. doesn't have to be an actual written note. >> you should always send thank you notes. >> here is a question. when you go on a date with someone, how much time do you think you have to impress your date? okay? or vice versa? apparently there is a study out there from the insurance company called axa and they say you have 12 minutes. >> how do they know? >> because axa had a timer on all the dates people went on. >> how weird. >> so people judge really quickly on things like smile, voice tone, eye contact, some basic -- >> and two biggest turnoffs immediately are body odor and bad breath. i can understand that. followed closely by swearing. >> you know what, i think that's such a turnoff. sometimes i do it. >> i noticed. >> i do it and i don't mean it. i'm afraid someone is going startle me on the air. if it comes out of your mouth,

he said, she is. he said to me. and the bartender says i always know if a couple is going to work or not if the man orders the woman's drink first and then his. if he orders his drink first, the relationship -- >> he's a selfish jerk. >> doomed, over. okay. >> there is a way to be artful when you pack a lunch. some people are over the top creative. this one doesn't take a lot of time. sometimes you think moms have all kinds of time to make a beautifully packed lunch. grace hall's 6-year-old son wasn't a fan of lunches, so she took a new approach. she turned the food into edible art. look at some of the things she made. six minutes. look. 15 minutes is what i meant. so, look, she had apparently some kind of cut out for a dinosaur. >> cute. >> that's adorable. oh, my gosh. for halloween. >> now everybody -- the mothers -- she's got to think of something new every time? >> no, no, no.

a boy is going to do stuff like that. >> teach him some manners. he shouldn't be a hooligan with me. >> boys will be boys. >> how much does the saying boys will be boys ring true and why are they like that in first place? >> dr. meg meeker is the author of "strong mothers, strong sons" and dr. leonard sax is the author of "boys adrift." >> no matter what we like to think, they are different. i have a boy and i have a girl and they could not be more different. >> they just come out that way, don't they? >> yeah. >> we have studies to show all that too. so any mom who raised a girl and raised a boy, you try to do the same thing and they're completely different people. >> what are the pitfalls that parents fall into when they're raising sons? things that they shouldn't be doing? >> well, i think that in this day and age we parents, we tend to -- i know dr. sax probably sees this too, we tend to what i call hyperparent. we focus on a lot of the superficial things.

make sure we build them a good resume, make sure get to the right soccer team, football team. but to get boys to develop a strong identity and character, every parent needs to be able to answer three questions in the boys. what do you believe about me, how do you feel about me, and what are your hopes for me? you can't answer the questions on a soccer field or classroom, but if parents spend enough time with their kids to answer those questions over the years, that's where you develop a really strong boy who knows who he is, and he's ready to launch. >> what do you think, dr. sax? >> my big concern is that parents today are unsure about what to do with all the screens. i'm seeing so many boys, what they want to do in their spare time is play video games. sit down with the screen. and the parents are like all the kids are playing grand theft auto and it must be okay, it is not okay, it is your job to turn the device off.

>> what does it do to kids? >> it shifts them away from the real world to the virtual world. mom is like, hey, you're in tenth grade, your grades are going to be on your college transcript and you're up at 2:00 in the morning playing grand theft auto. doesn't that matter? he says no. he'such more into being the first in his group to finish all the missions in grand theft auto. that matters more. accomplishment in the virtual world of the video game matters more. >> that's so wild. so scary. >> there is another important thing that is spending so much screen time does for boys, not just video games, but even on internet. it is very isolating. and even though they say i'm on facebook, i'm connecting, they're not. they're isolating from their parents. it is -- kids to develop a healthy sense of self-esteem need to read their parents, be with their parents, be mentored by their parents, mentored by people of an older generation. it is not just about, you know, sticking with your peers. kids are very lonely. and electronics makes them lonely.

>> at 15, aren't they going to sort of do what they want to do in some cases because they have their own ipads? >> 15 not too late. they shouldn't have their own devices. they came out with guidelines saying no cell phones -- the parents should be in charge. you need to say, look, you need to prioritize the real world above the virtual world, you need to be spending time with real people and turn off the devices, girls are going to bed with their cell phones on, texting at 2:00 in the morning. boys are going to bed with devices, playing video games. >> not getting good rest. >> no devices in the bedroom. that's not just my opinion. that's the american academy of pediatrics. >> when you look at colleges, and you see that a lot more girls are graduating college than boys what is happening there? >> boys are dropping out. >> in the united states today, for white, black and latino boys, working hard to get an a instead of a b is not cool.

it used to be in this country, but it no longer is. so across the united states, whether you're affluent, low income, urban or rural, boys don't want to be seen as a geek. >> is that what you're seeing, too? >> i do think there is a subtle cultural message that we're sort of dumbing boys down. men, dads in particular, are stupid and we sort of throw dads into orbit around the family. all dads on television are stupid, little kids laugh -- >> every joke. >> i think it trickles down to boys. i think boys feel that maleness is not appealing, they don't know what to be, they don't know whether to be assertive, kind, compassionate, whatever. i think they're very isolated, they're very confused and we're dumbing them down. we need to get to -- and parents really need -- >> a lot of them don't have a father in the home too. >> a great mom can take them pretty far. >> thanks. >> thank you very much. you wanted to know and we wanted to answer the questions you've been asking.
