handle normal day life. i would fly into rages, i would get really depressed. >> when i got out of prison, people -- i was really angry at a lot of things and one of the things i was very angry at was the iranian government. you know, taking two years -- more than two years of my life. >> reporter: josh fattal, sarah shourd and shane bauer, forever linked from berkeley to tehran, the young hikers made international headlines in 2009. imprisoned in iran, accused of spying. >> you are very educated and well versed in that part of the world and asked this many times, but why even risk being so close to the iranian border some. >> well, it was a gamble i didn't intend to take. none of us intended to take, you know. so, you know, the -- the hike that we took was really based on recommendations of people nearby saying go, go to the waterfalls.
7:51 am
so going past that hiking up farther up the mountain, was just a decision of it looked nice, let's go. of course looking back on it, it's -- it was definitely something that i didn't intend to do. >> shane, i'll ask you this. in the book, you write about early in the book, that you sneak out of your cell, you go into sarah's cell and you guys were intimate. >> right. >> why did you want to write that in the book and are you crazy? i mean you risked your life for 20 or 30 minutes of passion. >> um, well, as far as being crazy, i mean, things were so desperate at that time in the very beginning. we had no idea what was going to happen, whether we would make it out, whether we would be hurt. everything was up in the air and we -- we had been in solitary confinement for a few months at that point and i was so

desperate for interaction and, you know, to be with sarah. she was in a cell next to me and we were able to talk a little bit through a vent and, you know, it felt like the stars were aligned, the guards left, left the key in the door, in sarah's door and i couldn't resist. >> it was a very meaningful moment for shane and i. we didn't know when we would ever, you know, be able to be close again. >> so how difficult was this for you earlier in your life. you're a rape victim. did you feel you might have been raped again in prison? >> yeah. i was terrified of being raped. i read accounts of women being raped by interrogators in iranian prisons and that was the only thing i thought about through the early months. i pride the toilet, the cover of the toilet off of my toilet in the bathroom connected to my cell and i would just sit up all night holding it, ready to defend myself. we had no idea what was going to happen to us. there was absolutely no road map, no one to tell us what
7:53 am
happened to people in this situation. >> you weren't tortured but in solitary confinement for so many ys were tortured? >> yeah. we were tortured, four months, you know, there were times that i thought i was going to lose my mind, that i totally just broke down, like a puddle on the ground and there were times that i just kind of was dazed, i was watching kind of this core of my essence of my being being human, just look slipping away. >> reporter: slipping away but not forgotten. their focus now, limiting solitary confinement in american prisons. >> we're all going to talk in five years from now and where are you all going to be? where would you like to be physically, emotionally, spiritually? sarah? >> five years from now i would like to have a big garden, still be in oakland, and be writing and engaged in really tackling
