the canonization ceremony made even more historic as pope francis and pope benedict celebrated mass together. the first time a retired pope and a current pope have ever done this in public. ann thompson is at the vatican this morning. good morning. >> reporter: erica, it is still a mad house here. people don't seem to want to leave, and why not? many of these people spent the night on rome's uncomfortable cobblestones just to try to get into st. peter's square, and those that did, well, they were the lucky few because this crowd stretched all the way down to the river. the vatican says 500,000 people witnessed the mass here and then another 300,000 watched it on big screen tvs, 17 of them placed around the city of rome. all of them seeing for the first time two popes canonized in the catholic church. >> reporter: for an institution 2,000 years old, this was a

first. two popes made saints before a crowd that spilled out on to the streets of rome. john xxiii who brought the church into the modern world by calling the second vatican council, and john paul ii who lifted up his native poland and helped bring down communism in eastern europe. two giants of the catholic church in the 20th century, lives, pope francis says, are still relevant in the 21st. pope francis chose to canonize the two popes together, another symbolic act of his big tent approach. each man championed by different factions of the church. john paul is lawded by conservativetives for his strict interpretation of doctrine. john was seen more pastor than pontiff. this was not a day for labels.

and for those who a year ago feared pope benedict's resignation would throw the church into turmoil, this morning's sight of two living popes celebrating their predecessors, a sign of unity in this ancient fate. >> reporter: for those that stayed to the end, and that was just about everybody because it was tough to leave were awarded by a popemobile ride. he went down all the way down to the end. he got there, couldn't find a place to turn around, so he hung a right, and we're told that he got back to casa santa marta in time to have lunch. >> ann, thank you. >> hate to see the popemobile get caught in that wrong traffic. not only with the canonization with two popes is it an important day for the catholic church, but we got a chance to see pope francis and pope ameritus benedict.

we turn to greg burky, a vatican spokesman. good morning to you. both the former popes were canonized. they represent almost bookends of the modern era of the catholic church. what message was the pope trying to send in doing this? >> reporter: lester, i think it's pretty simple. it was unity. the pope is all about unity in the church. the church is a welcoming place. you know, you can play a lot on the whole factions, how much that's true, how much it's not. certainly they're both very involved in the second vatican council. john xxiii calling it, and really john paul ii implementing it to such a degree, but i think it's an incredible sign of unity, and also a day of great joy. >> for noncatholic who's are watching all the pageantry and the special occasion, explain the significance of becoming a saint. >> reporter: well, lester, you

know, sainthood has a really interesting history, and that is it started with the martyrs. people who gave their life for the faith and the fact that the other christians would go there to the tombs to pay their respects. now, essentially that's what's happening here as well. you're seeing people come essentially because they say they gave their lives for the faith, if not literally, but at least in the way they lived their lives. essentially these are the heroes of christianity, and that's how the church sees them. i think most believers want to arrive at a day when they meet their maker, and he says well done. good and faithful servant. that's what's happening here. the church saying, well done good and faithful servants. stwloo we enjoyed seeing that brief picture of pope francis and pope ameritus benedict greeting each other. what's the relationship between the two these days? >> reporter: well, i think it's -- francis has actually encouraged benedict to come out,
6:07 am
and this is a great sign also. we return to the theme of wrunty. benedict had wanted to disappear. for the most part he has. he goes out for a oning every once in a while, but at least publicly he has disappeared. on a couple of bigger occasions pope francis has asked him to come, and it is a sign that it is one church. two popes and a pope ameritus, but one church. >> extraordinary day. thanks so much. >> reporter: thank you. all eyes on the middle of the country today because a dangerous weather system could spin off deadly tornadoes in that area, and the risk is actually growing by the hour. dillon has been keeping a very close eye on this for us throughout the weekend. good morning. >> good morning, erica. we have to keep a close eye on the midwest and what has already been a very quiet season so far. we've had 39 tornadoes this april. on average you get about 155 tornadoes. in 2011 we had more than 700 tornadoes, but i want to show you the setup. this looks like a very busy map here, but we do have the winds coming in from the south. that's your warm, moist air.

dew points running around 65 to 70 degrees. back behind it this is your colder air where dew points are down in the 20s and the temperatures are very cold. it's right in this area through here, including arkansas, where we could see some very strong storms fire up today. from omaha down to houston over into parts of mississippi and western tennessee, that's where we could see your regular, strong tornadoes that produce hail, damaging wind gusts, and an isolated tornado, but it's this focus from shreveport, louisiana, into most of missouri and including all of arkansas where we could see long track tornadoes develop, especially later on today and into tonight, those are extremely dangerous because they stay on the ground for an extended period of time crossing over many areas. that's something we have to focus on for this afternoon. it is going to be very active later today. lester. >> all right. thanks very much. the los angeles clippers will take to the court in a playoff game later today with their owner donald sterling caught in the middle of a firestorm. he is accused of making racist

recording is not consistent with, nor does it reflect his views, beliefs, or feelings. as for stibeano, she was sued last month by sterling's wife who is trying to get back money in gifts. stiviano is fighting the suit saying in court papers her four-year relationship with sterling was open, notorious, obvious and long-standing even though he is married. now it's the court of basketball at the center of the sterling controversy. >> i personally think the situation is most unfair to the clippers players and coaches who have to deal with this distraction in the middle of their own highly competitive playoff series. >> reporter: the nba commissioner says he will not comment on any possible sanctions against sterling, saying he deserves due process. some fans are calling for a boycott of clippers games, but others say the players should not be punished. lester. >> all right, joe fryar, thanks very much. erica. >> thank you, lester.

even president obama is weighing in this morning on sterling's alleged comments. at a news conference in malaysia just hours ago, chuck todd asked the president for comment. >> when ignorant folks want to advertise their ignorance, you don't really have to do anything. you just let them talk, and that's what happened here. >> david gregory is moderator of "meet the press." david, good morning. >> good morning, erica. >> the president went on to say that this just shows, again, how the u.s. continues to struggle with this legacy of race and slavery and segregation, and it is something, as we know, that continues to come up, and the president is asked about it, especially because of all this talk about after his election that we would be moving into a post-racial america. how did these comments affect the president when he is asked to weigh in on them, and in your experience in washington? >> well, there's a certain moral leadership that comes with being the first african-american president and to talk about issues of race that still persist in this country. racism persists. when you have these flash points, the president initially

reluctant has become far less reluctant to talk. if you think about trayvon martin. and other ifrn stance instances where he has had a strong reaction, here he has really put his print on this as a kind of moral leader to say, look, this viewpoint is still there and we must denounce it and call it out and let this ignorance play out. i now think this is a very important moment for the nba, for society, because the investigation isn't that difficult. all you have to ask is is it your voice? if it's your voice, the nba has brought authority to take some action. especially a league that is predominantly african-american. i expect things to move pretty quickly here. >> we've seen a lot of that starting first thing tomorrow morning. want to turn now to the president's trip in asia. he is on this four-nation tour there, and, yet, we have been talking much more about, of course, what's happening in ukraine, what is not happening, in fact, in the middle east. how much of those other issues and distractions are affecting potential accomplishments for the president on this trip?
6:14 am
>> look, we always talk about distractions and the president's time and in his agenda, and that's the case here, but he is being listened to closely in asia, primarily by china, and china has a real interest in watching how the situation in ukraine plays out because historically the chinese have sought to exploit difficulties between the united states and then the soviet union and now russia. all of this is interrelated. nevertheless, the united states is a big player in asia. the ukraine situation demands attention. vladimir putin is plotting his next moves. the united states has taken a tough stand, but putin isn't listening. we may have an economic war that gets deeper now, which will have pretty wide affects, and the president is trying to manage that very carefully. >> all right, david, appreciate the time. we'll talk with you in a little built to see what else you have coming up on "meet the press" this morning. >> thanks, erica. >> let's go to jenna for a look at the other stores this morning. >> good morning, everyone. we begin with the latest on that ferry disaster in south korea.
