now authorities are trying to figure out what started that fire. and embarrassed. the father who kicked his young son down a skateboard ramp reveals his side of the story for the first time, today tuesday, april 29th, 2014. >> from nbc news, this is "today," with matt lauer and savannah guthrie, live from studio 1a in rockefeller plaza. >> good morning, everyone. welcome to "today." the worst severe weather outbreak of the year. >> 118 tornado reports since sunday including more than 80 in the last 24 hours alone. in all 28 people died, 11 of those overnight. right now tornado watches are posted in georgia and florida.
7:02 am
>> al and dylan have it covered. dylan is in hard-hit mississippi. al is in kimberly, alabama. >> good morning, guys. you can see what is left of the kimberly first church of god completely destroyed. across the way the firehouse, town hall has been oblit rated. a lot of folks here are happy to be alive. as you take a look at what happened last night, just last night alone as we put the radar into motion you can see the tornadoes being spawned really incredible in just that one 24-hour period, 84 tornado reports, 177 wind reports, 65 hail reports. things are firing up again. we are not close to being done yet. >> massive tornado! >> another violent night. across a huge swath of the south. powerful storms bearing down with the bull's eye on

are happy to be alive after riding out the tornado inside their home. >> you could hear the cracks and the pops all around us and those doors just kind of eased on top of us and just kind of made a little tepee surrounding us, like angels just holding those doors right there is how it felt. >> this is all that remains. >> this is my life that i worked so hard for, and it's just -- laying there in pieces. so what do you do now? >> so she's picking up those pieces. >> mom. >> holding on to reminders of life before the storm. and unfortunately, we're going to see another repeat of this. now, here is what we are looking at for today. already on the radar such a slow moving system. this is the same system that moved through our area here in alabama last night and is now pushing its way all the way up into central georgia. and what is going to happen with this is we have the slow moving
7:05 am
low pressure system. it is a powerful system up to the north. it is moving ever so slowly. it is going to interact with the jet stream. that is going to make for a strong sheer. more rotation in the atmosphere. combine that with the head of the jet stream we have a ton of moisture available coming out of the gulf. that is going to fuel the storms. what happens again for today we are looking at the risk of severe storms, a wide swath stretching from the gulf coast into ohio and virginia. we have a risk of really strong storms from alabama into mississippi in the same area that got hit last night is going to get hit again today in all likelihood. tomorrow the same system makes its way to the east. last night we had a bit of a scare. in all of the years i have been covering tornadoes last night tornado sirens sounding. they got on the p.a. system of

the hotel and sent us into the ball room. just a taste of what folks down here go through all the time when the tornado sirens go off. >> scary stuff. >> al roker about 20 miles from birmingham, alabama. dylan dreyer is in pearl just east of jackson. what is the scene there. now the residents are starting to trickle in to pick up the pieces and salvage what they can of what is now the rubble of their homes. we have gotten word that here in this mobile home park everyone is accounted for and safe. there were reports of three
7:07 am
injuries. the national weather service for jackson is just about five miles from here and they issued many warnings and a lot of people heeded the warnings here. they started issuing a tornado warning at around 5:30 local time. at that point we started to see the tornado on the radar. the tornadoes stay on the ground for a long period of time. this particular tornado really hit a large swath of the jackson metro area including here in pearl and brandon and richland, mississippi where one woman was killed when her car was picked up and tossed to another location. we are keeping an eye on more severe weather today. people will be very much on alert. >> this is an unfolding story. we will continue to follow it throughout the morning. the national basketball association will hold a news conference at 11:00 a.m. pacific to discuss racist comments
7:08 am
attributed to donald sterling as corporate sponsors begin cutting ties with his team. >> good morning, matt. before the clippers do take the court tonight, the nba will make its announcement about the team's owner, so what will the league do? at this point, it's unclear. experts are calling this uncharted territory. last night, another silent protest. in a show of solidarity, the miami heat dropped their warm-ups at half court, their t-shirts inside-out so the logo wasn't shown, just like the clippers, who could make a statement again tonight. >> i think they'd like to do something bigger, something more in los angeles in front of their fans. >> reporter: many are calling the donald sterling scandal a big first test for nba commissioner adam silver. >> they need to suspend him immediately and indefinitely, and then let their lawyers figure out how to get him to sell the team. >> reporter: sterling is accused of making racist comments in audio recordings posted on "tmz" sports and deadspin. the recordings could not be verified by nbc news, but
7:09 am
according to the weather -- website that released the audio, sterling was upset his girlfriend at the time, v. stiviano, posted this photo with magic johnson. >> you can do anything. but don't put him on instagram for the world to have to see so they have to call me. and don't bring him to my games, okay? >> reporter: the fallout from the controversy is growing with several sponsors ending or suspending their ties with the clippers. are you concerned this is hurting the nba's image? >> well, i think it has the potential to hurt the nba's image, so i hope that they act quickly and decisively in dealing with this and do the right thing. >> reporter: as for stiviano, she was spotted outside her home, but declined to comment, same for donald sterling who was seen leaving a restaurant sunday with his wife. >> are you a racist? >> no, of course not. >> reporter: sterling is no longer receiving a lifetime achievement award from the
7:10 am
naacp's l.a. chapter, which says now the national naacp is requesting a meeting with the nba commissioner. >> a lot of pressure on adam silver, the brand new commissioner of the nba. only had the job since february to act quickly and bring the hammer down on donald sterling. what are the limitations of his powers? >> no one is sure exactly what sweeping powers he has under the bylaws of the national basketball association. i think he will announce a lengthy suspension and a fine today, but that's not going to be enough. i think the end game here, and i don't know what pressure, economic or otherwise, they can bring on this guy, is to get him out of the sport. and whatever is announced today, they want this guy out of the club. >> you hear words like banned from basketball, suspend indefinitely. what's really going to happen here, in the off-season, all the other owners are going to get in a room with donald sterling and they're going to make a very strong case for him to get out
7:11 am
of the game. >> one owner said this weekend, we want him out of the club. so that's a very powerful voice right there. the second thing is, for the first time really, the players association' intent and those of owners are completely lined up. because the players association, even if it's like a year suspension, it's not going to be enough, because this guy can't go forward owning this basketball team. >> they can make a financial case that he needs to sell this team. they can tell him, mr. sterling, the value of your franchise is going down every single day. look what's happened with sponsoring over the last 24 hours. >> you know, matt, what's ironic to me about this is, in his real estate life, he's been picking on the little guy his entire career. now he's become the little guy. now he knows what it's like to have people gang up on him. >> the difference is the little guys he picked on didn't do anything wrong. he's brought this on himself. >> without a doubt. but at least he gets to know now what it's like to be pushed around like this. >> the clippers have their first home playoff game tonight, the
7:12 am
first since this scandal broke. what do you expect to see from the players? what do you expect to hear from the fans? >> i think the fans will be very supportive. i know mark jackson, the coach of the warriors, said the fans ought to stay home. the players didn't do anything. doc rivers didn't do anything. they've just become part of the fallout of this toxic mess, okay? i think the fans will be loud and supportive tonight. if there's a weird sort of karma at work here, after sterling's been this kind of clown owner for this long, now he's actually got a team with a chance to win, and now this is visited on his players and his coach. >> mike, always good to give your perspective, thank you. >> thanks, matt. in the meantime, natalie has -- breaking news on a work place shooting in georgia. >> we know at least six people were injured when a gunman opened fire at a fed ex facility outside of atlanta. kerry sanders joins us with the latest. good morning.
7:13 am
>> good morning, nathalie. i am about 30 miles north of atlanta just outside the dekalb county airport where a gunman walked into the fed ex facility and opened fire. he shot six people, one is in critical condition. the other five are still at the hospital being treated. according to the authorities and witnesses at the scene it appears it was a 19-year-old co worker who camed in armed with long knife, a pistol, shotgun and band lero of bullets across his chest. >> he was in all black, i believe he had a camo vest. the knife was like about probably about a foot long. >> reporter: she said at one
7:14 am
point the gunman came up to her, picked up one of those laser readers that they use to read bar codes to pointed it at her eyes and kept on moving. the authorities say the gunman killed himself. the scene right now is still closed but nobody more is expected to be arrested. back to you. it's every airline passenger's worst nightmare. a plane carrying 97 people had to make an emergency landing after one of the engines caught fire. a passenger caught the dramatic moments with a cell phone camera. you can see the sparks shooting from one of the four engines. the pilot cut the engine, turned the plane around and was able to land safely at perth airport. an update now on the teen stowaway who flew from california to hawaii in the wheel well of a commercial airplane. the boy's mother is speaking out
