6:00 am
all-clear three weeks before a stow away scandal. were warning signs overlooked. >> good morning to you, you got through the hottest part of the heat wave and the spring sizzle will continue for today. as we get into tomorrow, a five to ten degree and we'll show you what this means for your microclimate in moments. what this means for your commute, well, a little slower drive through san jose and show you that slow down for the bay bridge toll plaza and waiting for the metering lights where you're already waiting. live look at the sap center and we will talk about the sharks coming up in a minute, but for the moment, it's thursday, may 1st. this is "today in the bay." and a very good may day to you. thanks so much for joining us, i'm laura garcia-cannon. an update to breaking news. a preliminary investigation
6:01 am
shows a jail could have been flooded leaking gas since yesterday. investigators e-mailing those findings to pennsylvania city council members early this morning. overnight an apparent natural gas explosion caused the roof of the jail to collapse and about 600 people inside, two inmates were killed. as many as 150 inmates and officers were injured. the results of the investigation are, of course, preliminary, but parts of florida and alabama have received heavy rainfall over the last couple days. they acknowledged the jail was partly flooded. >> with 600 inmates in the building at the time, search and rescue teams have done three searches through the building and we're confident at this point we have everyone out of the building. >> this was video taken yesterday morning showing the heavy downpour in the area. official say the spring storm dumped up to 17 inches of rain
6:02 am
on pensacola in just a couple of days. time to check the forecast at 6:01. live look outside and san jose and san francisco on the right. warming things up, once again. checking it now with meteorologist christina loren. >> it was a hot one yesterday. i know a lot of people were complaining, especially about the overnight conditions because we didn't really have any wind. now, things will change. we got through the hottest part of the warming trend. starting off nice and mild and end up just about as warm in your inland spot for today with major cooling coming to your coastal areas as onshore flow picks up. if you head out and about this thursday, this is what you can expect weather story of the day is that mild start and then those clouds increase as we head into this afternoon. cooling clouds especially at the coast and then by sunset, temperatures five to ten degrees cooler than they were yesterday with that onshore flow really increasing. so, as we head throughout the day today, i've already taken your temperatures down by two to three degrees on average. you notice on your seven-day
6:03 am
forecast. as we get into the next couple days after that. we are talking about taking your temperatures down in ten degree increments. a noticeable cool down and that kicks in starting tomorrow. temps in the low 90s for today. what will happen big area of low pressure heads off to the east and for us that enables the cooling clouds to come back on shore as the ocean air is transported all the way inland. so, a five to ten degree dropoff as we head entotomorrow. we'll show you the weekend forecast coming up in just a minute. right now, let's check your drive, here's mike. i'm sorry, about that. top stories of the day, sorry, scott and laura, back to you. >> no worries at all. a burn back in most l.a. counties. that means even if you have a permit, you cannot burn vegetation. overnight firefighters had to move quickly to get a vegetation fire in antioch from spreading. the fire started near the intersection of pintail drive about 12:30 this morning. the three-acre grass fire was quickly put out and no one was
6:04 am
hurt. this morning state water officials expect to get more bad news from the latest snow survey from the season. workers will gauge the sierra nevada snow pack hoping to figure out how much water has or will melt into the streams and reservoirs. the sierra snow pack accounts for about a third of the water. the last measurement was a month ago and showed at 32% of how much snow the sierra usually gets. our weather team will have continuing coverage of our heat wave, meanwhile, throughout the day on nbcbayarea.com and on the other side of the coin, we'll post information about that snow survey when we get it on the website, as well. now, at 6:04 developing in southern california, officials fear the wind that whipped up this brush fire in the foothills of los angeles could start up again and undo all the work they did overnight. the fire started yesterday quickly burning more than 1,000 acres. the intense winds just pulled those flames into the night sky, spreading embers along the
6:05 am
hillside. at one point more than 1,600 homes were evacuated and those orders have since been lifted. the national weather service has issued a red flag warning for extremely dangerous fire conditions in parts of los angeles, san bernardino, ventura until tonight. hot and dry conditions with wind gusts between 60 and 70 miles per hour. new this morning, massive flames force two people and a dog out of their san jose home. one person burned on the hand but will be okay. this fire broke out just before 9:30 last night. they had a hard time reaching the flames and barrier or clutter in the front yard, they say. it all happened at foxworthy avenue and it's on the border of campbell. no word yet on a cause. the tsa says it's been working nonstop to figure out how a teenager from santa clara scaled a fence at sjc, made it past security and stowed away on a plane.
6:06 am
the comments came in response to an intense grilling by senator barbara boxer. "today in the bay" christie smith is live and we learned the tsa inspected the airport just three weeks ago. >> yeah, good morning to you. that's right. that's what's raising eyebrows and senator barbara boxer said this really isn't about the teen stow away himself. about the fact that someone made it over a fence and on to a plane undetected after the airport passed security inspections by infectors here at sjc. a 15-year-old from santa clara who grabbed international attention when he scaled the fence and made it to hawaii in the wheel well of a plane. the fact that the airport passed inspection may increase pressure to go ahead and boost security measures at all u.s. airports. in the senate committee, senator boxer said, what if it was someone else? say someone who had explosives, but the tsa administrator said they have been working nonstop
6:07 am
to try to figure this out. the tsa did review things like physical barriers, electronic access and did find them in compliance and also said with 450 airports, there really is no one size fits all. >> their fencing was in fine shape, but at least one prior secretary of homeland security said show me a 15-foot fence and i'll show you a 16-foot ladder. no perfect solution. we will buy down risk in a measured fashion that allows us to make sure that we're doing everything possible. >> now earlier an airport spokesperson had said the fence meets or exceeds federal standards. that administrator said there could be improvements. things like better closed circuit tv and canine patrolling and even a second fence in some situation. but without money from congress, it's all just an unfunded mandate. reporting live in san jose, christie smith, "today in the

bay." the teenage stow away lives in a home in santa clara with his father, stepfather and siblings. so far it's unclear if he and his family are brought back home or if he and his family are still in hawaii. >> good morning, mike. >> good morning, guys. ease in towards san jose where we're looking at 101 easing into the morning commute. saw a lot of stalling here and live camera just north of the overcrossings right there and first spot to show the slow downs and good amount of slowing on the approach and first of all, wrong map. my maps are frozen. here in the south bay just for north 101 and 87 also build the volume into downtown. as we're looking at this tri-valley map, we'll talk about it. a smoother drive and a crash further back at grant line road and visible from the freeway and this big rig a distraction for folks come out of the altamont. i'll have to get off this map and go to the bay bridge toll

6:13 am
coming up. thanks a lot, mike and christina. here's a look at your top stories and we just learned a flooded laundry room may be to blame for the deadly explosion at a jail overnight. 150 inmates and correction officers were hurt. authorities say an early investigation shows the jail's laundry room which flooded yesterday during heavy rains may have been leaking gas. motetia san jose passed a security inspection just days before a teen was able to hop the wall and hop into the wheel well of a plane. they look under to perimeter fence and other security protocol. the airport passed all those standards. this morning investigators are trying to figure out what caused this fire at a san jose home. two people and a dog made it out. one was burned on the hand and should be okay. it happened late last night at a home on foxworthy avenue.
