explosion happened around 11:00 last night. this morning, emergency officials are still assessing the damage if figuring out what happened. right now, at least two people are dead. 150 others are injured, that includes corrections officers and inmates. with retold we are told most have non-threatening injuries. they are scouring the building. we are told everyone was accounted for. this was a massive explosion. much of the building destroyed, part of it collapsed. one witness calls it again a massive explosion. he says the earth shook like an earthquake the building had around 600 people in it at the time. everyone accounted for. the inmates have been transferred to other local facilities, matt. >> the facility has been secure. there have been major roanes, gabe, lots of flooding. some people said that may have contributed to the explosion in some way. >> reporter: well, authorities are investigating the exact

cause of the explosion. but as you said, there has been record breaking flooding here. this building suffered extensive flooding yesterday. jail official dos tell me this explosion does appear to be related to that flooding. this building also flooded back in 2012. but nothing like this. now after this explosion, the building has been deem structurally unsound, matt. >> gabe gutierrez on this story in florida. thank you very much. >> you mentioned the heavy rain there. the problems tied to the flooding stretches well beyond florida this morning. following a day of record rain up and down the east coast. dylan dreyer is in baltimore this, mo. good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning, savannah, right here, i'm at the intersection of north charles street and 26th street or what's left of 26th street. right here in the city of baltimore. from up above, you can see a better view of this partial road collapse. most likely caused by the deluge of rain we had here on wednesday and overnight.

as it washed away the earth below the street and sent it tumbling down. engineers are now assessing the situation. this is one of the many examples we are seeing across the country from the this week's enormous storms. the tri-state area is waking up to a wet commute this morning after a night of non-stop rain. philadelphia, new jersey and new york are now feeling the recommend navents of the same weather system that brought deadly tornado to the south just days ago. weather caused hundreds of flight delays and cancellations in much of the northeast. with dallas airport reporting the wettest spril april day on record. the relentless rain proving too much. some ended up feet from the train tracks below. >> we heard a large boom. about two seconds later, the waves sounded like this. >> i think of a sink hole, i

think of florida not patriot more. >> reporter: meanwhile, across the south, residents just starting to wake up from tuesday's tornadoes are now coping with waist high waters from flash floods. in pensacola, florida, record rainfall left the streets forfeit for boats than cars a. terrifying moment for a woman trapped if her car on a flooded roadway. three water lean workers saw the distressed woman and sprung into action. >> all i could think about is i didn't want to see her die. >> reporter: with moments to spare, a successful rescue from the rushing water. >> thank you all, you all saved my life. >> anything we can do. >> i appreciate it. i wasn't going to last much longer. >> reporter: now not far from here, 20 miles to the south in laurel maryland, we have reports of evacuations of about 200 residence. now, there was a planned dam release just to allow some of

saturday. they allege it shows ford smoking crack. nbc news has been unable verify the authenticity of the recordings. in a statement, mayor ford says, i have a problem with alcohol, and the choices i have made while under the influence. and i know that i need professional help and i am now 100% committed to getting myself right. the original allegations of substance abuse surfaced this time last year. >> i may have had some drinks. i know it was wrong. >> i did not use crack cocaine, nor am i an addict of crack cocaine. >> water the matter with you? >> we spoke with the mayor at the height of the controversy last november. you played a game of semantics. they asked you were you a crack addict to you, you said, no. >> they said, do you use crack cocaine? no, i don't use crack cocaine, i don't. have i tried crack cocaine? yes, i tried crack cocaine.

high pressure for the first part of the day means another warm afternoon. 92 degrees in the south bay, 92 for the east bay and 78 degrees in san francisco. so, we will see some significant cooling today right at the immediate coast and a touch cooler today for your inland valleys. major cooling comes into the picture by this weekend. talking about earlier, this nasty dispute over a new house being built in raleigh, north carolina. it is a construction project that now has neighbors choosing sides. nbc's kerry sanders has more this morning. kerry, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, savannah. there are about 600 homes in this neighborhood. victorians, old shotgun bungalows. the value of the homes here is anywhere from $200,000 to several million dollars dollars. but as i walk across the street here, you can see there is another home here that neighbors say doesn't quite feel like it fits in with this historic neighborhood. now at issue is whether the couple building this home can be ordered to tear it down.

the streets of oakwood. quiet, picturesque, beautifully restored homes from the 19th century. but one of these homes is not like the others. this two-story two-bedroom house is being built in a style known as modernism, made famous by architects like frank lloyd wright. lewis cherry, an architect himself and his wife marsha gordon say they made it clear all along they planned to build a different sort of home in this neighborhood. >> we believe that this is good for the preservation of this neighborhood. this neighborhood needs to be alive. it needs to be invested in. and it did not stop in time in 1880 or 1910. >> reporter: the couple got a city building permit and started construction. >> when you're given a building permit from a city, you expect that it means that you have permission to build. >> reporter: but when neighborhood started to see what was taking shape, the complaints began. >> but it is completely inappropriate for the

neighborhood. it is totally in congruous. >> reporter: the fight is now headed to court as the house sits unfinished and empty. >> it is devastating for us. the cost to us is very high emotionally and financially. >> i just don't think it fits in a historic district. >> reporter: some neighbors say they cherish the history of the homes here and fear if a different architectural style takes hold, more will follow. >> that's the reason why this historic district was started in the first place, is to protect all of the homes in the district. to keep anything that's inappropriate out. >> reporter: those fighting the construction say lewis cherry and his wife knew they were taking a risk. >> kitchen, dining, living. >> reporter: for cherry, the dispute is a simple case of property rights. >> i don't think it is appropriate to exert your taste on other people's property rights. >> reporter: those in opposition say that this is not about property rights. they say they feel that it just doesn't seem to fit in.

we're back now at 7:43 with a story that's sparking a big debate. for 13 years officials in missouri thought mike anderson was serving a sentence for armed robbery. but due to paperwork errors he never actually went to prison. instead, anderson built a new life and one he is now fighting to preserve. nbc national correspondent kate snow talked to him exclusively at a maximum security prison. kate, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, matt. last summer when the missouri state prison system went to release mike anderson is when they realized their mistake. they sent him then to the maximum security prison to finally serve out his 13 years. this is where mike anderson lives now. 22 hours a day in a cell. >> it is like my life is wasting away. >> reporter: anderson admits that on a summer night in 1999, he and a buddy were drinking and robbed aburg he king employee making a night deposit using what looked like a gun. anderson was sentenced to 13

years but then was released on bond while he appealed. on his last appeal he listed his home address but in court the prosecutor says something else. >> that's when the prosecuting attorney hopped up and said no, my office checked, mr. anderson is currently incarcerated with the department of corrections. >> the prosecutor thought you were already in jail. >> yeah. >> and you weren't. >> i wasn't, no. >> reporter: now he faced a choice. he says his lawyer told him that the state would realize the error eventually. >> did you think about turning yourself in? >> the thought crossed my mind but once someone tells you, you know, it's not your job to turn yourself in, it's their job to come and get you, it's like, hey, well, i'm going to enjoy every moment that i can. >> did you wake up every day thinking this might be the day? >> for the first couple years, yes. yes, i did. when i'm in the shower i hear a noise outside, somebody closing the door, i'm thinking it's them at the door. every single day. >> so why not turn yourself in to avoid that? >> this isn't me. prison is not me.

i couldn't do it. >> reporter: anderson says he was determined to prove he never belonged in jail. he became a master carpenter, started a contracting business. >> i became a man. i grew into the man that i was supposed to be. >> reporter: he built a family with his wife. loved helping the kids with their spelling homework. >> i make them spell every word five times and then use it in a sentence. at home. they're like we don't even do this at school. i'm like i don't care. you're going to do it here. >> reporter: anderson says he rehabilitated himself but the state still thinks he owes them 13 years. >> this is a highly unusual case. >> reporter: michael wolf, a former supreme court justice. >> the state still takes the position. we have a judgment. we are entitled to have this guy serve a sentence. how long a sentence, that's the question. >> reporter: the missouri attorney general's office wrote in court filings that mike anderson "took advantage of a situation he could have easily corrected." why should you not have to serve out 13 years? >> i shouldn't have to serve it

out now because i feel the last 14 years of my life speak for itself. it shows that i'm not that person who they said i was. i wouldn't have turned out to be the man that i am now. >> reporter: he misses his kids. >> i worry about them every day. yes.sadness in your eyes. . >> i'm trying not to show it. >> what's behind that? >> my kids. the love for my family. >> reporter: by has faith that he will go home. >> every time i wake up, every time my name is called, every time the door opens i'm believing that it's my day. >> on monday a court is set to hear anderson's case in missouri. in court filings the missouri attorney general actually suggested legal paths that could lead to freedom for anderson. the attorney general told us in a statement his goal was to suggest a way for the court to balance three things -- the seriousness of the crime, the clerical error made and anderson's conduct in all these years since that crime. >> it is a fascinating dilemma. i'm sure people will be weighing

escaped or whether they could be in the hospital. again, some confusion about those numbers but the explosion happened around 11:00 last night. more than 100 people were injured. although we're told most of them had nonlife threatening injuries. this building suffered extension flooding throughout the day yesterday. and investigators are trying to figure out what role that may have played in the apparent gas explosion. again, county officials have a little bit of conflicts numbers at this point. the sheriff said two people, two inmates are confirmed dead. at this point, three other inmates are unaccounted for. natalie, back to you. >> thank you. heavy rainfall flooded basements and streets along the east coast. in baltimore a block-long section of a residential street possible undermined by the rain caved in. the huge hole swallowed several cars and houses were evacuated

until they could be checked for structural damage. no injuries reported. baltimore's mayor said the rough winter and spring having an impact. toronto's mayor ron ford is seeking treatment for substance abuse. the trip to rehab comes after canada's globe and mail newspaper published pictures said to show ford on saturday smoking what reporters believe was crack cocaine. ford has admitted using the drug in the past. in another paper the "toronto sun" posted an audio recording of a man said again to be mayor ford making lewd comments about his wife and a female rival in his race for re-election. nbc news has not been able to verify the recording. a case that's stirred national anger is back in the news. montana's supreme court ruled wednesday that the one-month accept tense -- sentence given to a former teacher for raping a student is too short. a new trial has been ordered.

we're back now with sports being called a major threat worldwide. antibiotic resistant. in a new report the world health organization warns that we could be headed toward a post-antibiotic era, meaning common infections may have the potential to kill. dr. nancy snyderman is nbc's chief medical editor. been hearing about this for a number of years but now the world health organization is calling it a global threat. >> imagine a child in aleppo who's hurt, goes to the local emergency room and that child has an infection that can't be treated with the most basic antibiotics. we tend to think this is a first world problem, a western world problem. it is now global. but in this country alone, last

stats were 2 million people were infected with antibiotic resistant microbes. 23,000 people died. >> is this simply because we are overusing antibiotics and doctors are prescribing them too often? >> antibiotics are in our food supply so we ingest them. we take them for reasons we shouldn't. we take them improperly. i think we always have sort of assumed if we go to the doctor we'll get something in return. that's usually antibiotics. and we have become germophobes in all the wrong ways. we wipe down gerls on everything as if they are bad for us. some germs keep us healthy and we are doing a good job destroying that. >> why should we take antibiotics, why should we not? >> take antibiotics when you have a bacterial infection. not a virus. antibiotics stop bacteria from hurting you and that's when they should be used. >> once you get a prescription for antibiotics, take all the doses. do not stop before the doctor or the instructions tell you to

stop. >> that's right. most people will sort of stop when they feel better and that's the last thing you want to do. you want to take it just as directed, all the doeses. if you stop taking them early, the bacteria mutate. for heaven's sakes, don't give your pills to somebody else. . >> if you want to try to stop the spread of a bacterial infection there are ways before you get antibiotics. wash your hands with soap and water but be careful about these antibacterial soaps. >> basic science we learned about in kindergarten how soap breaks up particles and lifts them off your hands so the scrubbing action of soap and water under a faucet makes sense. don't wash your meat. cook it thoroughly. that's takes care of all the bacteria that are maybe on raw chicken or turkey. wash your fruits and vegetables. have it separately. and i think stay away from the antibacterial stuff. the more we get back to basics the better we have the chance of

>> there was a point when for the very, very first time you got a look at yourself. what was your initial reaction when you did? >> initial reaction was in shock. it was a loss. part of you that is there one day and gone the next. that was difficult. it's terrifying. it really is. you don't look like yourself. >> my husband called them battle scars. those scars were my life. i never felt ugly. i never felt like i need to hide these scars. they're just a part of me. >> i had them freeze my eggs because i'm so young and hoping to have children and i look at myself when i was with my hair and just everything that happened. terrible. it wasn't easy.

>> when other women look at this photograph that's on the "today" show, what are you hoping that they'll take from looking at you? >> i want them to see how strong i am and how i'm not scared to be who i am even though what happened to me, i'm still me because those scars are my battle wounds and they're good scars because you made it through and you're here to show them. >> every day i get up and i look in the mirror and you see less and less of yourself. all you have to do is look deeper. that's what i'm trying to do, look diaper inside myself and find that inner beauty, that inner peace and make peace with myself. and i think i have today. >> i hope that it is not the end.

it is the beginning. i want them to see me as a person, as a person who overcame it and, best of all, as a survivor. >> we are so happy to have these amazing three women right now. can we introduce you to francine, pamela and madelyn. good morning, ladies. this is the first time you've seen those photographs. >> yes. >> look behind you. they are behind you as well. >> oh! >> what do you think? >> it's amazing. i didn't think i could look that good. >> it's interesting because all -- none of these three ladies wanted to take their tops off. we were there and it was such an awkward thing but what made you go through and step he in and do it. i know you had a lot of difficulty with it. >> i had a huge problem. anybody who knows me, this is so out of my comfort zone. but i felt very proud, very

proud to be with these women who are amazing. i felt very proud. >> natalie, when you look at your gorgeous picture, do you think that's how i see myself? >> definitely. definitely. what a rush. >> you all three have wonderful, strong men in your life who are helping you through. you talked about how your fiance wanted to get married right when you were diagnosed because he wanted to be married to you when you went through it. >> yes. >> tell us a little bit about him. >> he's amazing. he never left my side once through this whole thing and for him to want to marry me and to be closer to me while i was getting treatment and going through the surgeries and everything, he just helped me through this. he made me strong. >> pamela, there are women watching right now who are in the middle of it. they are going through this right now. what do you want them to know? what do you want them to take away from what the three of you have so courageously done? >> that truly was my sole reason for coming on the show.

i thought if i could just reach one woman recently starting her battle. it is doable. it is not easy, there is not one thing easy about it but it is so doable and life on the other side is amazing. amazing. >> and madelyn like exude humor and life and love. were you this way before breast cancer? >> sure. >> this is your personality -- >> 61 years, girl. i have cultivated this. definitely. >> your husband -- by the way, your family members are all looking on. he must have been such an influence, too, in your life. >> yes. i didn't give him the option because i didn't know how i was going to be. the option of staying with me or not. and god, darn it, he did. i'm so happy. >> can we be shallow for a moment. i mean are we thinking 8x10 glossy for a moment? poster size? will you proudly display these photographs? oh, pamela says no. national tv and that's it?

there was a time you go on the "tonight show," you stand at age 26, do your monologue. then the two clubs you're going to play on the weekend. they get a cardboard thing and they have an artist in colorado or somewhere say, from the "tonight show." the "tonight show" drew more people than my act. it's just that the people knew i was good enough to be on. >> isn't it true that the first time you were on the "tonight show," you got done with your stand-up, you walked over to the producer and said where is my money? >> yes. yes. because i didn't know anything about show business. i just knew that it was fantastic. the man kept saying do just three minutes. and my contract said i was making $300. that's whoa! i wanted to show that to my boys in the projects. >> that's a lot of jack at that time. >> we didn't even call it jack. it was called bread. >> bread.

>> yeah. >> you tell a story -- in accepting the award you told the story about your first gig at a major comedy club. you bombed. first night you bombed. >> yes. >> what gave you the guts to get back on stage? >> the fact that i said to the man -- the man said how do you want to be introduced? i said, ladies and gentlemen, one of the fastest rising new comedians in america. i went out, i did 35-minute act in 18 minutes. no laughter at all. i was so scared. i raised my hand and i said, thank you very much and the audience didn't clap. they all in unison said, take care of yourself. >> good-bye. >> and i walked off, went up to the room and the brothers came in and one of them said, blah blah blah. i said, yeah. i said i'm going home and thank you for the money. next thing i know, the guy says, okay, show time. i go down, same guy.

boom, it's time for the intro. the guy says, bill cosby. then he did like that. i said, wait a minute. the mike was open. i said, what happened to the intro i gave you? he said did you see the first show? and that made me get rid of all of that down feeling. the speech -- i hope they play it all -- is a wonderful speech about being you and not letting yourself become so nervous. >> and another part of that speech you say don't be afraid of anything. all of you. don't let anything defeat you. don't hold back. don't be afraid. which is easier said than done. >> yeah. because sometimes some people are foolish about what they really want to do. >> does anything scare you these days? >> yes. >> what? >> "today." >> the show or -- >> no, man. i've been listening to things and things are getting like hammering. there's a lot of yelling and

we're back with the remarkable story behind one family's thriving business. it all started because of two young boys and their battle with a rare disorder. nbc's harry smith has this story. good morning. good to see you. >> great to be here. get to meet a lot of interesting people as i wander around the country. some surprise me, some inspire me. troy ball did both, and then

some. >> here's a big bump, colton. >> reporter: the ball family sets out for an afternoon stroll in asheville, north carolina. troy and her husband, charlie, moved here from texas ten years ago to save the lives of their oldest boys, marshall and colton. in texas their frail constitutions were constantly compromised by the heavy pollen. >> marshall was rushed to a hospital and stopped breathing in an ambulance the year before we moved here and that was kind of the turning point for us. >> this is as healthy as they've ever been. >> reporter: life in the cool, clean air of the appalachians has agreed with this family, including their youngest, luke. it's also provided a unique business opportunity. >> doesn't it smell good? >> it is like grits. >> it is exactly grits. right. >> reporter: troy ball makes moonshine. you heard that right -- corn liquor. >> you can put your finger right in there and smell it. >> it smells like whiskey!

>> that's hard. that's hard. >> this is the good stuff. >> that's the good stuff. >> reporter: troy got idea of making moonshine because when they first arrived in asheville, she'd get mason jars full of the stuff as house warming presents. soon troy was heading back into the hollers to find out for herself how it was done. >> came home one day and with the pressure cooker and said to my husband i need you to help me convert this to a still. and he said, you're nuts! i'm not going to do that. >> reporter: that little pressure cooker turned into this, a thriving distillery that makes the real mountain dew. >> just take a little sip. there you go. >> wow. >>eporter: the key ingredient to troy's whiskey -- crooked creek corn. grown for generations by farmer john mcintyre's family. >> this is not genetically modified, of course. we're proud to say that. >> this is old-school corn.

>> reporter: call it moonshine for the masses. once you take a first sip, you're kind of prone to want to take a second. >> reporter: plenty of people here thought she might be crazy but troy believed if she could overcome the myriad obstacles to keeping her sons healthy she could probably do almost anything. thus, on every label it says, "troy and sons." >> i spent 24 hours a day for about 18 years taking care of the boys. it is my job to keep them alive and so when it came time to finally have a moment to develop a business, this was my way of honoring them and making a statement about our lives. >> reporter: a statement that could double as a recipe that life, or even moonshine, is pretty much what you make of it. >> troy and charlie, some of the most impressive people i have ever, ever met. >> you know what i'm impressed by?

heavy rotation. i won't think of the lyrics now. >> that changes everything. >> that's what i'm here for. >> i'm willie geist, along with al, natalie and tamron. hopefully this is the last day of this weather. but we got rid of the severe stuff yesterday but it was replaced by just torrential downpours. it started off in florida where pensacola -- some areas around pensacola got almost two feet of rain. more rain than hurricane ivan. this was within a couple of hours. insane stuff. in fact entire neighborhoods. take a look at the map right now. we can show you just how much rain was falling from pensacola and then it rolled up the east coast and new york city set a record for rainfall. washington, d.c. dulles, central park, philadelphia, all breaking single-day records. massive flooding and -- >> lots of rescues once again.

you see people getting stuck in their cars. >> people in their cars, in their homes. major landslide in baltimore where a road split in half. then there was a sinkhole left behind. >> that's crazy. >> you mentioned pensacola. the cover of "usa today," this is the scenic highway, a well known route in the pensacola area, simply collapsing. cars and homes going down the side. >> as you might imagine, flights were really delayed and affected. lester holt live tweeting, he said his plane was trying to land at laguardia, diverted to upstate new york where you can get some fantastic cheese. but he said it was some of the roughest turbulence he's ever felt. >> that's coming from lester who flies a lot. >> he flies a lot. >> then compounding that on the west coast there was a major computer failure and it shut down lax and some other airports out there. so they had to hold planes.

so it was a mess! >> my co-host on "morning joe," joe scarborough, is from pensacola. he sent along some pictures from his own neighborhood. he said even in hurricanes they'd never seen water. entire major highways are collapsing under the weight of the water. >> folks were stranded on i-10 for seven or eight hours overnight. it is calmed down now. but when you think about how we were all looking forward to the end of winter and the he beginning of spring -- not so much. >> one last punch. >> in toronto, mayor rob ford announced last night that he's taking a leave of absence to get help for substance abuse problems. in a statement he said, i have a problem with alcohol and the choices i have made while under the influence. i know i need professional help. i am now 100% committed to getting myself right. why now? the announcement came after new recordings surfaced on the "tron

sew s toronto tsun's website where he makes lewd comments about his wife and a female political rival. two photographs were pub accomplished which "the globe and mail" claim is just from saturday night in his own sister's home that shows mayor ford purportedly smoking what the newspaper believes is crack. the newspaper says that it was recorded by a drug dealer in the home. nbc news has been unable to verify the authenticity of those recordings. >> we laughed about him for a while. he has a major problem and had this is a major city that can't have this guy running the city. >> he says in his statement that he's getting -- he's going to rehab for alcohol use and says that it's contributed to other behaviors that obviously not behaviors that he wanted to do, i suppose now in hindsight. but it's amazing though because there is this series of

denial -- a pattern of denial with him, until the recordings come out and pictures come out. we all go back to that interview with matt where he said, mark my words, five months from now, i will eat my words if i'm not clean and sober. and so it's sad because you know he has a major problem. >> well, yeah. he still hasn't admitted, despite the photos that his addiction is also -- apparently if this photo is accurate -- crack. he says it is the alcohol that makes him do things and he wouldn't even admit to that. it is also a case of a family struggling. his own mother said he had a food addiction but refused to admit that there was a larger issue that he faces with drugs and substance abuse. i was talking with a substance abuse expert about this. he took issue with what you said, willie, people kind of laughed at this at first because this guy is straight-up an "snl" skit. but again if these pictures are accurate he clearly has a substance abuse problem and it is reflective of a lot of

people. heroin addiction which we've talked so much about on nbc lately. it is laughable because of the way he's presented himself, sadly. but it is so tragic. >> another question matt asked him in november that stayed with me. matt said what if 3:00 in the morning and there's been god forbid a terrorist attack or narg disastas natural disaster and you're on a bender and can't respond. but with that, mayor ford still says he plans to run for re-election in october. >> marion berry won again. he was caught using crack by the federal government. >> the election is october. the question is if he goes to rehab and all of a sudden comes out clean and sober and appears to be a completely different kind of guy, i mean will there still be the support there? >> i doubt it. i can't imagine toronto wanting to take a chance. you want to get cleaned up and get healthy, that's great. but you know what? it is a major metropolitan area with lots of issues.

they need somebody that they can depend on. sadly, i don't know that it is rob ford. >> voters get the final say. >> they do. well, here's an interesting study. how often do you go to some of these stores where the people who are waiting on you or helping you can be a little bit >> i've never seen that at old navy. >> you haven't? something tells me you dress very nicely, you've encountered a couple of people who are let's say less than helpful. a new study has found those snobby sales staff might make you actually shop more in those stores. study says that shoppers interacted with rude and neutral staff that rudeness wasn't a turn-on for mass market brands like gap or h & m. but high-end stores, they actually make shoppers want the products more. in other words, kind of like mean girls. you want to be a part of the clique more. >> they also make you feel like it is exclusive. it is the reason they have

you have to take other things aside in order to be the role of the breadwinner. >> i think that's not something i was prepared for, how the dynamic would shift in terms of who needs to go to work and who needs to take the kids to school and who needs to get to their office sooner, myself or my husband. >> i am very worried that i'm going to be locked in to a certain job because of the paycheck that requires a certain amount of energy, time, hours and brain function and that that will take me away from a child. >> sometimes i feel like my husband -- like my husband feels like he's lost his manhood and it saddens me. it does. >> sometimes if it's on that day, i'm looking at him like what are you bringing to the table? >> the author of the new book, "when she makes more, ten rules for breadwinning women." one woman is christine lewis married to her husband mark for more than ten years.

good morning, good to see you. listen, when you hear someone say i wonder when he brings to the table or that men are worried about their manhood, where they stand, that's punch being the gut. >> it is. and i speak from experience. i'm a breadwinner in my marriage. i needed answers. personally in our family, i dealt with some criticism from my own mother, for example, who was worried about -- i think it came from a very concerned place. she was worried about how i would lead a life as a breadwinning mom, compromising my life perhaps trying to bring home the bacon but also trying to be at the forefront of all these tasks as a woman, as a wife, as a mother. when you look at the landscape, i surveyed over 1,000 women. when she makes move she's less satisfied in her relationship. specifically she has questions about how do i avoid feeling resentful feeling like i'm doing it all and how does he not feel emasculated. >> christine, you and mark have been very open about this in your own relationship. you say you make two times as much as mark does as a software

executive. what kind of tension, if any, has that put in your relationship? >> most of the tension really comes from managing our household and family. to be honest -- the finances have really never been the challenge in the conversation. we've always looked at it like it is a team approach where the money ends up is one singular pot and so that's really not where the struggle comes. it is really from being the woman who potentially has to run off to work sooner than her husband and come home later than her husband and kids. my husband does so much to hold down that home front on all those levels. >> mark, it sounds like the issue for your relationship was how much time she was spending at work that resulted in her being the breadwinner. >> correct. a lot of it is just getting her home to be with the kids before they go to bed is a good focus for us. >> do you feel any of those stereotypes that we heard about in the set-up? >> i do not. i don't have those issues, willie. we have things to do during the day and it really doesn't matter to me who does them as long as they get done. we have two small children and taking care of them and putting dinner on the table.

doesn't matter who puts it there. it just has to get there. >> mark says the most important thing here. whatever has to get done has to get done. if you really embrace that mentality you will thrive when she makes more. it is not you do what you do because you are the woman or you do what you do because you are the man. but at the same time you want to respect gender differences. men and women are hardwired differently. generally speaking men get their sense of pride and contribution from being able to provide as breadwinners. that's just going back to cavemen era. and for women we are emotionally torn because we're not prepared to be the breadwinner. we are happy to do it but we feel conflicted. >> it is interesting, too, you brought up your mother. you also have the dynamic of outside forces, how people size up your relationship and say things like sugar mama or whatever these other names are out there. how do you avoid the trap, including keeping people out of your marriage, i guess? >> you have to have compassion.

these people ultimately -- again, this is new territory for everybody. and for those of us who are living it, we are trying to make it work day in and day out. those who are on the outside may not understand. it is not just to just shut them out of your life because it could be your mother, or your co-worker. these are important people. they may not understand the situation you are in. >> sounds like the two of you have this figured out. you worked this out really well but not all relationships do as well as you do with this arrangement. what advice would you give someone out there with the same set-up as you two? >> sure. i think we kind of realized we might not be the norm so, yeah. advice is kind of central to what we've been talking about. really about team work and really when you become a married couple or even just a joint couple, it's about being a unified approach towards things. money really didn't really ever play an issue for us. there were times when mark did make more than i but a few years ago i surpassed that.

as parents, we're always looking for great advice, the best advice to raise a thriving child, but there are many different experts with many different opinions. >> dr. robin berman decided to

talk to everybody from teachers to therapists to coaches to role models to find out what is at the heart of great parenting. >> she took that information and put it into a new book called "permission to parent: how to raise your child with love and limits." welcome. welcome. >> what a thrill to be here. thank you so much. >> what a great idea, to find the most important people in your child's life, and get the best advice from them. >> absolutely. there is so much great data. if we look at the kids who turned out great, we said what are the common denominators. what did you do? what are the secrets? you scream the word limits, that's where we have trouble these days. children went from being seen and not heard. and the pendulum went the other way, controlling the universe. kids are the center of the universe and parents are terrified to say no out of hurting their kids' feelings. this book is the new middle. let's hybrid both of these extremes and find a grateful

place in the middle. >> what should parents do who have difficulties saying no? lay it down? >> they should realize that setting a limit is a way of loving yourself. >> they don't realize that. >> it is a form of love. it is not, like, scream at them, i hit them, yell at them, i'll let you throw all that away, shame them, all of those old behaviors. >> shame a little. >> shame is a healthy thing. >> shame ultimately actually becomes sometimes internalized self-hat self-hatred. you should be ashamed of yourself, trying to raise a child who feels super great inside. and if you shame them and if you, you know, you're the voice in their head forever on automatic replay. people who i interviewed who are 70 and 80 years old can still hear my mother saying -- >> how we talk to our kids. >> the tone. it is the tone. >> it is the tone and the words. >> people are so exhausted. they're working several jobs, they're not getting any sleep, sometimes they're a single parent. just to say, moderate your tone.

make sure that you -- they don't have the time or the energy. and sometimes they don't have the will. they feel shame. so they put their child with a social device, some sort of social media thing. or -- >> the tv or -- >> they let other people raise their child. >> or things raise them. >> one job you cannot farm out. you cannot farm out parenting. you are -- it is a forever love story. you never forget your parents. good and bad, right? if we're going to farm it out to an electronic device, we're missing the connections. >> people go the other extreme they try to overparent. they -- >> they hover. >> they fix everything. they don't want your child to feel the fall, so they scoop them up before they do and never experience -- >> you are speaking my language. you are speaking my language. you're not creating resiliency. we're creating a bunch of fragile entitled children. >> not prepared for the real world when they get out into it. >> who are not prepared for the real world. and they become very resentful because they're so dependent on their parents, they're looking
