from nbc bay area this is "today in the bay." good morning and what a beautiful way to start the day. a little bit of cloud cover and cooler temperatures, but isn't that nice to hear after those blistering days we had last week. thanks so much for joining us. i'm kris sanchez along with meteorologist rob mayeda. i have to say i was really whiney the last couple days. >> a lot of us were. >> hot. >> not just at your household.

temperatures well into the 90s the last couple days. yesterday started to see the cool down and now the temperatures starting to drop off. san jose, you have low clouds, 66 degrees, into the south bay where we're seeing low clouds, inland towards livermore and pleasonton this morning. you can see from the view, emeryville back to san francisco, 55 degrees and the saturday outlook will conclude these low clouds for the morning and then eventually see more sunshine inland for the afternoon. thanks to the sea breeze our highs will be in the 70s and then yes, the low clouds spill back in as we head towards this evening. all the shaping up for a great weekend for the livermore wine country festival. we'll see numbers in livermore in the mid 70s today and the trend heading toward sunday will be cooler as the weather could take a bit of an interesting turn very late in the weekend. the future cast here, sunday into monday, shows a chance of seeing a few showers. we'll show you what this means for the rest of your seven-day forecast and really the temperature impact that will have as we head toward sunday coming up in a few minutes. kris? >> thank you, rob.

he is coming home, the 15-year-old stowaway who hid in the wheel well of a maui bound flight out of san jose left hawaii and is believed to be headed back to the bay area this morning. yahya abdi survived subzero temperatures through the five-hour flight from mineta san jose to maui and has been in protective custody at a hospital since april 20th when he landed. abdi told police he hopped the fence at the airport, climbed up the landing gear into the wheel well of a boeing 767. he told police he did it after a fight with his father and hoping to reunite with his mother in ethiopia. abdi's father went to hawaii this week to bring his son home but hawaiian officials aren't confirming whether the two are together. just in to our newsroom oakland fire officials say an elderly woman died in a one-alarm fire at her home this morning. firefighters say when they arrived at the house on the 2500 block of parker avenue just before 3:00 this morning, the home was engulfed in flames. the blaze was under control in about 15 minutes.

but when crews went in to check for survivors, they found an elderly woman who was pronounced dead at the scene. she was the only person in the home. the cause of that fire is under investigation. san jose police want to take the fight out of the fiesta. the pd is increasing patrols ahead of cinco de mayo trying to squash the violence that sometimes mars the celebration downtown. san jose police are already increasing patrols of the downtown area and the santa clara sheriff's department gang task force is out on patrol. sources tell nbc bay area that certain deputies will look for parole violators and probation violators who are targeted as possible trouble makers. this is all in response to previous cinco de mayo celebrations in the area that have given way to violence like this one in 2007. this is george sanchez who owns chacha's restaurant in san jose and he said he's seen the good and bad with cinco de mayo celebrations. >> i think people are coming downtown with a conscience.

obviously the demographic downtown is changing. the economy is changing. there's residents living town here so you see a big change in the people out here. >> the sjpd will be out in full force all weekend. they'll also be on the lookout for drunk drivers. make sure you designate a driver. a group of students who wore american flag t-shirts to school in 2010 put a huge national spotlight on the high school in a small south bay town and now a recent court ruling is generating more attention. morgan hill is preparing for a huge protest outside live oak high school on cinco de mayo. the school put up a fence in an effort to prevent disruption during the school day on monday. in february three judges decided the school district acted improperly -- or acted properly when they told students to either turn their american flag shirts inside out or go home. members of the gilroy morgan hill patriot group believed that was the wrong decision. >> we plan on doing is standing there with our american flags in

silence for an hour just to support our first amendment right to do that. >> you have these people cloaking themselves with the u.s. flag calling themselves patriots when they're anything but patriots. >> a morgan hill police plan to beef up security on campus on monday. the school superintendent says he will do everything he can to protect the students against any violence if necessary. and now to an nbc bay area follow-up. they are out. san jose state university expelled the three white students accused of bullying their black roommate. the university investigation found that they violated school rules and placed the victim's safety in jeopardy. a fourth student was suspended until july. all four students are accused of putting a bike lock around their roommate's neck and taunting him because of the color of his skin. a student from will cox high school in the south bay died in a car crash in north san jose. she was the passenger in the car. it happened yesterday afternoon on north first street.

the driver of the car, 17-year-old boy, remains in the hospital this morning with life-threatening injuries. he was driving the black sedan you see on the screen that crashed. >> a traffic signal pole. the girl was killed on impact. this happened at the corner of north first street and tasman drive not far from 237. the two teens were reportedly headed to a friend's house. >> he was on the way to our house. we heard what happened and we came down here real fast. they were already taken away. he is in the hospital. he wasn't alert or anything for a while. they said he's talking now. i just talked to his family. >> police say they don't think drugs or alcohol played a role in this crash but they do believe that the boy may have been speeding and perhaps ran a red light. a second car carrying a family of four was also involved in the crash but up in of the four family members were hurt. she may have been related to the man who stabbed her to death. san jose police arrested a suspect in the killing of a san

jose mother. police arrested gabriel alejo ones when, one day after ter reeva was found dead in her apartment. she was the mother of a newborn and twin girls. this was san jose's 13th homicide of the year. >> it is being called the largest massage parlor sting in the bay area in all of its history. this morning 18 people are behind bars and dozens of others are being questioned. hundreds of law enforcement officers raided parlors across the bay area. 13 massage parlors and spas in the eeast bay were shut down. prosecutors say they were fronts for prostitution. some people who live near the massage parlor say it's about time. >> i think this is good what they're doing cracking down on these, you know, shops that are up here and pretending to dos business and it's not legal. we want it out of our community. >> prosecutorses say some of the businesses also had illegal marijuana growth. two dozen people have been

forced out of their homes after a fire in san francisco that spread to four houses in the ocean view neighborhood last night. it happened on bright street. one man risked his life to save several others running back inside the burning homes and with nothing but a fire extinguisher. the fire disrupted light rail service for hours as well. three people, including a firefighter, suffered minor injuries. still ahead on "today in the bay," hidden in plain sight. a major pot bust at a local airport that stunned investigators. plus, it was the first detected disease in camels, now it's affecting people. the deadly virus that's made its way to the united states.

plan to smuggle 81 poupz of pot? police arrested a woman at oakland airport after she checked three suitcases that were filled to the brim with marijuana. tsa agents found it during a routine inspection. "today in the bay" gene elle has the story. >> reporter: every checked bag on the conveyor belt at the oakland airport gets screened for explosives by the tsa. some are opened and searched by hand. agents opened these bags and found them packed full of pot. the tsa called the alameda sheriff's department. >> our deputies came across several bags filled with marijuana. we looked further into it. totaled it up and it was about 81 pounds. >> reporter: the tsas says it was a random search that uncovered three suitcases of vacuum packed bricks of marijuana but sergeant riley said agents probably smelled something suspicious. >> as most know it's not hard to smell the odor of marijuana. it's hard to conceal that odor.

>> reporter: the sheriff's department arrested the 26-year-old woman who checked the bags. the passenger was flying with her 81 pounds of pot to jackson, mississippi, where investigators believe she planned to cash in. >> as we in california are known for having high quality marijuana and lots of it so it's basically being exported out of our state we believe to mississippi where probably being sold at a higher value. >> reporter: the stash may be worth $500,000 in mississippi. while the woman under arrest the tsa tells us passengers who fly with much smaller amounts oof of marijuana and medical marijuana card don't usually go to jail. >> somebody flying quite routinely and normal if it's an allowable amount of marijuana the police officers respond, they just allow the passenger to travel. >> reporter: this time police canceled the trip. >> one of the larger drug finds i recall in my 12 years with the tsa. >> reporter: jean elle, "today

in the bay." >> not a great plan. a deadly and mysterious vie us from the midwest hit the u.s. called mers and was first discovered two years ago in saudi arabia. it actually originated in camels, but then made the jump to humans. about 200 people have died from -- in the middle east from the disease. it has since like the flu and now a man who traveled to saudi arabia recently is in an indiana hospital with mers. because it's contagious and because the man traveled by plane and then bus to indiana, other passengers are being notified. a vaccine has not been developed. >> more details about the mers virus. experts say it is similar to sars which popped up in china in 2002 and quickly spread around the world. like the camel connection with mers, sars is believed to have jumped from small mammals to humans in china. a legendary and expensive

showdown in the second legal battle between apple and  samsung, both companies are at fault. that's the verdict that came down from the jury yesterday. however, samsung is more at fault. samsung has been ordered to pay nearly 120 come for infringing -- $120 million for infringing on apple patent software. apple ordered to pay $158,000 for infringing on samsung technology. it's the second trial between two companies. apple won $930 million in damages in 2012. a google glass is getting a night out. that's the idea behind a nationwide event set for tonight. it's called glass night out and people with high-tech devices with google glasses are encouraged to show up at certain meeting places. in the bay area it is cupa cafe in palo alto. google wants to dispel myths about the device. glass has been banned from several businesses because users can record and take pictures. critics say the pricey wearable it tech is a symbol of the

private. >> the facebook developer conference was very public, but the biggest buzz inside the show was about privacy. after hearing complaints from users having to share private information to use facebook apps, the social network announced what it calls anonymous log-in. a way to use apps on facebook without revealing your identity. >> now we've heard clearly you want more control how you're sharing with apps. >> reporter: facebook ceo mark zuckerberg delivered the keynote speech saying the company can still make money and reach its more than 1.2 billion users without following you quite so closely. >> the reality is if you're using an app that you don't completely trust or that you're worried might spam your friends you're not want to going to gio >> reporter: privacy is a rare commodity. >> it's a step in the right

right now, seeing the overcast skies and as we show you san francisco, skies clearing here a little bit. cloudy, you can see the low clouds breaking up a bit, but the flag blowing that is that ocean air conditioning. watching winds at 20 miles per hour at times into san francisco, and from emeryville the perspective looking back to the golden gate off to the west, 55 degrees right now and yes, you got some low clouds around the inner east bay. out towards dublin this morning, low clouds pushed across the dublin grade by the winds which are strongly onshore and when the blue arrows are pointing inland that means we have the low clouds that will be around for the morning. clearing out the sunshine as we head towards the afternoon. so right now, you got low clouds around the bay area, but also some high clouds passing by south of san francisco. part of a weak trough that will pass by today and then as we head through later today, once the low clouds break up, you'll see a few high clouds going by from time to time. plan on the low clouds staying around the beaches as we go through the afternoon. so no rain today. but we might see some changes by

late sunday into saturday. hour by hour today, clearing as we pass lunch time. mostly clear inland during the afternoon and more high clouds and a combination of low clouds sweeping back in towards tomorrow morning. now the interesting change that could arrive mainly towards the late sunday night and monday we'll be watching is a system dropping out of the north it comes in early monday, so a fairly dry system. except by monday, mid afternoon, might see a stray shower or two. looks like mainly the north bay hilltops most of the moisture off to the north of san francisco and out towards the syria and once the system -- sierra and our temperatures will be climbing again as we approach the middle part of next week. mid 70s areas south of san jose, upper 60s and low 70s around the peninsula, san francisco should see highs in the low to mid 60s, partly cloudy skies, but somewhat cool an breezy. going to head it to wine country should be quite nice with the highs in the low 70s. closer to napa, 72 in santa rosa. oakland close to 70 today, fremont 72 and you see towards

san francisco is famous for many things, including a love of animals. shelters in the city have some of the lowest euthanasia rates of any major city thanks in part to the woman you'll meet in this morning's bay area proud. "today in the bay" shows us her amazing accomplishment. >> reporter: there is a home in san francisco's upper neighborhood that is picturesque on the outside. >> ears wiggling. >> reporter: and cute as heck on the inside. >> come here, kitedy. >> reporter: at the moment, there are 11 kittens, not a single one weighing more than two pounds, who call tony's home their own.

>> taste. >> reporter: and have no idea how lucky they are because of it. tony is the tony of tony's kitty rescue, responsible for saving the lives of close to 10,000 unwanted kittens in san francisco over the past decade. her home wasn't always a kitten sanctuary, though. like the animals she cares for her rescue efforts started small. >> over at the spca 20 years ago, sat at the desk and talked normal people, everything was great, and then i guess my cat died and they said, do you want to foster. so i ended up taking home a mommy kitten. >> there you go. >> reporter: it went so well tony did it again and again. >> pretty crammed in. >> reporter: and there is now nothing calm about tony's volunteer life. >> let's see what you got. >> reporter: every day during kitten season find tony at san

from nbc bay area, this is "today in the bay." it's saturday. i hope you have nice plans for today. we are looking live at sunol this morning which looks perfect for bike riding, walking the dog. to san francisco, breezies this morning so maybe fly a kite. i'm kris sanchez along with meteorologist rob mayeda. and welcome. temperature change i would say. >> big drop in temperatures in just a couple days. you saw the reasons why there. we've got the low clouds and the ocean air conditioning bringing the winds up into san francisco this morning and low clouds into san jose right now where we've got the cloudy skies, 56 degrees around san jose and other parts of the south bay right now. you're seeing those numbers mainly in the mid 50s.

the low clouds overnight into the morning keep our morning temperatures mild. notice around the peninsula, mid 50s around foster city over to san francisco, upper 40s to low 50s around downtown and out towards the east bay, dublin, patchy clouds, 55 degrees there. also towards livermore and 40s and 50s for now into the north bay. your saturday outlook will have the low clouds eventually breaking up as we get closer to lunch time today and then filling back in towards this evening. that will keep our temperatures in the 60s to mid 70s today. but maybe some bigger changes on the horizon as we see a system dropping in late for the weekend that could toss some showers into the north bay. we'll talk more about that incoming system and the rest of your seven-day forecast coming up in just a few minutes. kris. >> from stowaway to passenger the 15-year-old from santa clara who hopped a plane and rode in a wheel well is headed home this morning. honolulu officials say the teen left hawaii. yahya abdi survived a five hour

up security on monday and the school superintendent says he will do everything he can to protect his students against violence if necessary. growing pains in mountain view, the economy is booming, so is the traffic. city leaders are considering toll roads through the city, charging drivers to use these three exits off of 101. san antonio, rengstoref and shoreline. the streets lead to google and other high-tech companies. city leaders will offer inkrevtives to those who car pool. the pricing plan will be presented to the city council in december. something that you don't expect in california, gas prices falling. according to analysts we may see prices dip by 40 to 50 cents per gallon in the next few months. they say rising oil production has helped to stabilize u.s. inventories. drivers in california continue to pay the highest prices in the continental u.s.

right now the average price probably don't have to tell you, 4.26. the highest price in san francisco at 4.23, san jose 4.24. cheapest gas in oakland 4.23 on average. v. stiviano the woman at the center of the firestorm surrounding clippers owner sterling is speaking out. she was interviewed as part of an abc news barbara walters exclusive that aired last night on "20/20." here's what she has to say. >> confused. i think he feels very alone. not truly supported by those around him. er to meanted. emotionally traumatized. he's hurt. i think he's highly more traumatized than hurt by the things that he said himself.

good day to watch some sports, unfortunately the warriors not playing there at oracle so we'll go to at&t park where we have a nice new inside view of the ballpark. and the giants kicking off a ten-game road trip in atlanta taking on the braves.

the trip got off to a good start when angel pagann led off with a home run, second lead-off homer of the year. the game tied in the sixth.not . michael morris goes the opposite way for his seventh long ball of the season and the giants will hold on to win it, 2-1. to boston and the a's visiting the red sox. this close until the sixth when dustin pedroia opened things up with a grand slam over the green monster off ryan cook. oakland never recovered. losing big. 7-1. and the warriors center jermaine o'neal underwent an mri yesterday that showed a bone bruise on his right kneecap. good news is, there is no ligament damage, making o'neill questionable for tonight's game seven against the clippers. so that's good news because he's questionable and not out. here's to hoping. >> still ahead on "today in the bay," ladies will love it. the tiny piece of plastic that's sure to be a crowd pleaser at levy stadium.

good morning to you. we're seeing low clouds really a big part of the picture inland this morning in san jose. mostly cloudy skies. 56 degrees. we're seeing a little more sunshine now in san francisco as opposed to sdtdowntown san jose. you can see the camera bouncing around. 55 in san francisco. temperatures warming up only seven to eight degrees warmer than the number you're seeing right now. notice emeryville, you have the low clouds across the bay, 55 degrees, and you can see the patches of low clouds not just for emeryville but pushed all the way inland out towards dublin and pleasonton this morning. so low clouds really the story of the morning. eventually breaking up inland during the afternoon with the low clouds lingering out near

the coast and as we head towards the evening thanks to the sea breeze more of the low clouds spilling in once again. the winds now certainly on shore. this was not the story wednesday and thursday when slightly offshore led to the 80s and 90s even around the peninsula. today highs mainly in the 60s with areas of low clouds at times. also some high clouds passing by to the south. we have this trough of low pressure here which has brought up the onshore winds and another system that will follow late sunday that likely will push more clouds our way and eventually perhaps a few stray showers could be possible early next week. now for this morning these are the low clouds for the morning. there you see the clearing around midday and head through the afternoon low clouds near the coast and passing high clouds as we get into sunday morning and drizzle at times. coastal hilltops towards tomorrow morning. by late sunday into monday we'll see another system dro drop in and this may pack a little more of a punch for areas near santa rosa toward the afternoon and

san francisco is cracking down on people who skip out on their fares, but is it fair. riders using the popular clipper card are questioning their penalties. investigative reporter vicki nguyen looks. >> a ticket for fare evasion will cost you more than $100. pay your fare and you should be fine, right? not so fast. as we learned, problems with the clipper readers and the sometimes questionable actions of fare inspectors can lead to tickets that should be tossed. muni busses, trains and cable cars carry a quarter million ride ears month. among them elle, who's better known as the author of this blog post, how to fight and win. so popular among the first link to show up when you google sfmta tickets. >> sometimes two to three people e-mailing me for help a day. >> reporter: she says when she

boarded it beepds to show a low balance. riders may complete the trip as long as fund thes are added before the card is used again. >> when i went to add money before i could do that an officer pulled me aside said i was evading fair. >> reporter: after appealing and losing twice she took a day off of work to appeal her ticket in person and got her $103 fine refunded for a reason she didn't expect. >> the copy on file was plagiarized. the ticket i had was mostly blank, didn't have an officer number, street location, it was missing very crucial informations in terms of the validity of the ticket. however, the ticket was scanned and put on file with the city system was completely filled out correctly. >> does that happen often with your inspectors? >> no. i think that's uncommon. >> reporter: chris is acting director of enforcement frankly the machines are user friendly. the clipper website has clear

instructions for what constit e constitutes a tag to detect the appropriate fare. >> i'm tech savy. i wouldn't classify myself as not being tech savy. >> reporter:s this commuter and start-up founder says machines are often broken. when they are working they don't always register payments. >> different sounds. to be honest i mean it's definitely a noise you normally hear and i can't tell you like what's the difference is in tones to know if it's right or wrong were he was it ticketed for not paying his fare even though he says he tagged his card and the inspector wrote a note. >> on the ticket he wrote saying didn't scan properly. then he even wrote on the note saying has a valid clipper card with like $0 on it. >> of the -- $70 on it. >> of the vare yaus excuses i would say that's probably the most common. >> you're not buying it? >> no. >> still, he acknowledges the

system has flaws. this rider made headlines when cited for fare evasion. because of a mechanical mix-up the reader machine said he hadn't paid even though his statement said he had. >> in that situation he gets a ticket. >> in that instance he did. >> what do you say to riders when that happens and they feel it's unjust. >> we have an appeals process. >> reporter: don't count on that. records show while 20% of citations were appealed last year, only 1% of the appeals resulted in a dismissed ticket and we found the number of riders it was fined ranging from 100 to nearly $300 has risen every year since clipper cards were put in service on muni. in 2011 inspectors issued 27,000 fare evasion tickets. last year they issued 70,000. >> how confident are you these tickets are fair? >> i'm very confident. >> reporter: says the rise is due to the hiring of 20 additional enforcement officers

welcome back. we have our friends from pets in need. lisa is here with molly. we were joking she's part chicken. >> a little like it. >> she is. it's so sad when you see a puppy with so much fear in their lives. she's come a tremendous way, though. still -- i know. she's still very young. not a year. we think she's six or seven months. we've had her a couple months working with her. now we feel that, you know, she's really ready to go. her best ideal family would be one with some prior dog experience to keep her -- she's learning how to walk well on a leash and her basic commands. >> and she'll outgrow the fearfulness? >> she will. i mean -- >> once she gets a lot of kindness. >> absolutely. kindness goes a tremendous way as well as structure and
