>> i'm scott mcgrew. breaking news out of africa. eight more school girls have been kidnapped in northern nigeria. peggy bunker joins us now with the very latest. good morning. >> good morning to you, scott. this is not the news you want to hear, but this is what we are learning eight more girls have been kidnapped from the region of northeast by gunman that are responsible for kidnapping 200 to 300 other school girls that have been gone now for more than three weeks. the news is coming to us from nigerian where the eight girls were reportedly taken. now, this is happening after yesterday's threat by the leader who said that he would "sell the girls" s into a life of slaver" secretary of state said he would do anything to bring the nigerian girls. the eight additional girls that we are learning about in the past ten minutes and being that

this is a story that caught fire internationally, including some outrage that you see here that it took three full weeks for the world to start reacting to the fact that these young girls have gone missing and that gave the leaders to continue to grab the international stage which is what they have right now and especially with the new details that eight more girls have been allegedly abducted. we'll continue to follow this in the newsroom and bring you new details. >> one of the stories that shock everybody and has not made the news as much as it should. >> you see the protests and many of the mother's heacrying sayine have been getting everyone's attention about this for so long and right now this is something that the entire world is talking about in their efforts to get these girls back. learning new details about a high school student shot and killed by dublin police on sunday. officers say they had to use a stun gun on the out of control teen the night before he died.

police say 18-year-old oscar herrera was most likely high on drugs on saturday night when he threatened to eat his friend. his friend called police and officers shocked him with a stun gun to calm him down. he was taken to a hospital and later released from police custody. then the next day police were called to his house, again, because he was reportedly hurting his mother. herrera attacked him with a baseball bat and they opened fire killing him. herrera was a student at foothill high school in pleasanton. a morning after cinco de mayo and relatively quiet night of celebrations. officers were out in force making the rounds downtown. police still tallying up the number of arrests, but officers say it was really quite peaceful and really different than a couple year s ago. a new warning this morning for dog owners in san francisco. poisoned meatballs have returned and they're being found on the streets and trails where dogs walk. smith joins us in san francisco where the same thing happened just a few months ago. they can't seem to catch who's doing it, christie. >> good morning to you. this time we're talking about a different neighborhood. it happened in the sunset district where we are this morning. a dog walker found meatballs on a paper plate right around here. they were stuffed and this is near walking paths around the res voyeur. popular spot for people who walk their dog and that's what san francisco police are looking in into. no pets got sick from this latest incident but people very upset this happened again. this time at 24th and ortegga. dozens of tainted meatballs were found near the twin peaks neighborhood. a retriever got sick and that dog was able to make it to the vet in time to recover but in july much different story. a docson died after getting a hold of meatballs. the neighborhood that we're talking about the sunset,

diamond heights and twin peaks. police have not found the person responsible in any of these incidents but a $5,000 reward is being offered for information that leads to an arrest. reporting live in san francisco, christie smith, "today in the bay." >> let's hope they catch somebody. new drought restrictions could be on their way this time in pleasanton. tonight the city council could vote for mandatory restrictions. if passed people in pleasanton would have to cut back by 25%. right now the city has a voluntary cutback and turn off all its water play area this summer in hopes of conserving water. dublin will only open two of its three splash parks during the summer and only when it gets hotter than 90 degrees. livermore's water parks will remain open for shorter periods of time each day. 6:05 and time to check the forecast. let's take a peek outside this morning overlooking san francisco and you see alcatraz there in the distance. clear out there because it's

pretty windy, breezy. look at that ship. ready to go. let's check in with christina right now and a look at our forecast. >> good morning to you. as you're making your way out that front door this morning maybe need an extra couple of coffee or heading over the golden gate bridge where that wind is fierce and coming straight out of the west and pushing to the east. as you know you travel from north to south on that bridge and take it easy out there this morning, otherwise, looking pretty good. the wind is going to be the weather story of the day and in the 50s to start you out and little bit of patchy fog out there and not last long because the wind will strengthen as we head into the afternoon. that breeze will pick up 15 to 20 miles per hour gusting to 45 miles per hour at times. blustery out there today and that's at the surface even stronger wind gusts expected through your higher elevations and right at the immediate coast. by evening, wind will start to relax. 8:03 p.m. is when your sun will set and right now your

temperatures are not reflecting those warmer days as we're getting the longer daylight hours. i can tell you right now, we will see the 90s in just a matter of days. about 72 hours away, in fact, from big warmth here in the bay area. enjoy the 70s while they last and that's the message i will try to get to. the east bay at 72 and 66 degrees in san francisco. as you know, it's a traffic tuesday, let's check that drive. here's mike. >> good morning, christina. as far as the temperatures go and as far as the fashions go, as well. love that. looking over here westbound 580 and we're not in the 70s or even 60s right here and the leading edge of the slow down coming right here towards the dublin interchange and looking right near the off ramp and we'll look at the map and mark it with the arrow right there and below 50 and towards 40 now with that portion of dublin out of livermore and livermore itself west 580 also slows. a slower drive coming off the maze from west 580 here, as well. nothing dramatic slowing off at the berkeley curve and the

hey, happy tuesday, bay area. changes coming to your forecast today. breezy to windy and a touch warmer for your tuesday. mild stretch as we get into the midsection of your week. it is going to be nice wednesday through friday and then that heat intensifies. we're talking about a rapid warm up and a return of the 90s. we'll tell you what is coming to your microclimate in moments. and that breeze affecting the camera's stability here. but i have turned from emeryville over towards the bay bridge and reports of a tractor trailer crash on that westbound bay bridge approach. we'll let you know what i find and show you the impact coming up.

here is today's top stories. 34 people dead and fighting between government troops and pro-russian insurgents in eastern ukrai30 of those killed insurgents. this week's fighting has been the government's most ambitious effort to silence the unrest in that country. office depot merging with office max will close stores. 150 stores will close this year with all 400 happening by the end of 2016. no word yet if any of those stores are in the bay area. today marks one year since three women managed to escape from a cloveland home after years of captivity. amanda berry, gina dejesus and michelle knight are moving forward and have grown in many ways since they left the home of ariel castro. eight circus performers are still in the hospital after rigging collapsed in front of a packed audience in rhode island. here's a look at the video.

kind of hard to watch there. suspended before falling 30 feet or more in which they dangled from their hair. they drop on to a man on the ground, in fact, one of the injured acrobats is the designer of that rig that fell. tyke take a look at the animation. the steel hook, it's five inches long and half an inch thick. it's designed to hold 10,000 pounds. the rig and all the acrobats weighed 1,500 pounds total. colorado is seeing a rise in fiery explosions linked to marijuana. some images for you of recent explosions. authorities say the explosions happened when pot users tried to extract oil from marijuana at home laboratories. the oil can be 80% thc, which is the intoxicating chemical in marijuana. authorities say they have seen

31 explosions in colorado and there were just 11 last year. this morning southern california cut off from las vegas as a fire burns on a bridge on interstate a 15. these are live pictures from the scene. the interstate could remain closed up to two days because crews are letting that fire burn out. investigators say a worker accidentally sparked the fire yesterday at a bridge construction area. here's a look at the map that we're talking about. drivers were told to avoid the pass that is just south of the fire. last night traffic was backed up for hours. traffic now being rerouted on to city streets. although we're told some truckers are just sleeping it out. let's check the forecast. 6:14 this tuesday morning. take a live look at san jose and san francisco. and the san mateo bridge. looked it up, that's the star princess. it leaves at 7:00 this morning. >> where are we going? >> apparently victoria, canada.

>> sounds lovely. >> let's check in with christina this morning. >> why would you want to leave the bay area. such a beautiful stretch of weather. now, temperatures this morning mostly in the 50s, breezy to windy out there. that is our san jose camera pointing straight at campbell. you can see that water tower here and that camera is getting a good shake to it, even in the south bay. one location we don't get the strong wind and all the wind-prone areas, heads up, a blustery day out there. 52 degrees to start you out in san francisco and 52 degrees in the east bay and that area of low pressure that came through yesterday and brought us showers on cinco de mayo is racing off to the east. high pressure is moving in quickly. our days are getting longer, but we're not going it be that warm for today. in fact, just a touch warmer than where we ended up yesterday. really mild conditions for this time of year as it will take a while for the cool air to mix out. the two systems is competing, that is what is driving the wind and windy at times from the

peninsula. so much wind in san francisco and we're not expecting very much fog whatsoever until this evening when the wind drops off. 72 degrees for the tri-valley and 69 degrees in the east bay. so, let's talk about what's coming your way as we head to the middle of the week and down right comfortable temperatures for both wednesday into thursday. hold on to the warmth, but we'll lose the wind. then look what happens friday into mother's day weekend. the warm is on and we'll look at your microclimate forecast for this mother's day. i'll tell you right now, 90s expected. brunch always a good idea. that forecast coming up. here's mike with your drive. >> clearly labeling things a good idea. warning for my friends in the control room. my last shot of the richmond san rafael and will have to relabel. the bay bridge we're looking over here on the approach to the toll plaza. the backup, well, it's sizable, but i was looking for actually a crash reported between a tractor trailer and something else. we don't know the details, but i

don't see the crash itself either. there's the backup on the approach and look at the map, we have what you would expect for a traffic tuesday. a slow drive approaching the toll plaza and pretty smooth drive across the incline and metering lights turned on and east shore freeway west and 580 coming off of 24 and continue to build. this actually isn't so bad for a traffic tuesday flow. around the bay, looking at a good, predictable pattern right here. the peninsula, no delays. san mateo and dumbarton bridge getting over there. high gusty conditions there, as well. the golden gate bridge for that matter. we'll look towards the south bay where northbound 101 pretty severe first burst of traffic really kicking the speeds down below and recovering and holding steady and now starting a gentle build as we approach 630. 280 and 85 also start to build in dramatic fashion over the next 40 minutes. looking at west 580 coming through livermore and into dublin the leading edge of the

bulk of your commute. starting to show slowing drives and that traffic volume comes out of the dublin interchange and heading towards fremont, again, no major problems. the rest of your bay looking good. the north bay we will look at here. highway 37 and 101. still earlier reports of a car fire and we don't, brush fire of some sort but we haven't had anything develop and that's good news. a quick look at that richmond san rafael bridge coming over from richmond. no backup at the toll plaza approach fastrak and cash lanes will start to build over the next half hour, as well, guys. san francisco has a new plan to help taxi drivers compete and launch a partnership with fly wheel, it allows people to hail cabs. the app lets you watch as your cab approaches, much like uber lets you pay for the cab ride using your smartphone. the city regulates taxi drivers and medallions and permits.

in this video the head of the group said, "i abducted your girls." the leader says he will sell those girls and he threatened to attack more schools and abduct more schools. a threat he followed through on with the kidnapping of those eight girls this morning. a militant group. it is against education for girls. in fact, the group's name actually means western education. police say 53 of the girls have escaped since they were taken back on april 15th. the united states offering to help nigeria track down those girls, as well. 6:31. happening today president obama will urge action on climate change. today's report is expected to touch on extreme weather across the country, including droughts and wildfires right here in california. "today in the bay" tracie potts joins us live in washington, d.c. tracie, the president is about to roll out his most ambitious climate change plan yet.

>> we heard part of it over the summer. the national assessment broken down by region and they highlight the drought and wildfires that we've seen out west as one example of what climate change is doing to our weather. severe weather patterns that it's creating, according to this report. the administration brought together all sorts of experts that believe that climate change is the culprit here. not everyone believes that and in fact even though the president has made new efforts when it comes to greenhouse gases trying to limit emissions, trying to create cleaner cars as part of its climate change program, there are some scientists who, frankly, don't believe that global warming is happening at all and they're thinking that the president needs to focus more on things like domestic oil which they argue would create jobs and the president, as one put it, the president's plans are hurting the very people, the poor, that he's trying to help. now, that report has come out

weather, we've got a nice, nice finish to the week for you. 51 degrees in san jose and 52 for oakland to start and 52 in san francisco. if you're going to be heading out and about this tuesday, take a look at the gorgeous sky over san francisco this morning. little bit of cloud cover, but you'll notice these are mid-level clouds and not the low clouds that keep you nice and socked in. little bit of patchy fog and that is about it. that afternoon wind is going to whip. and as you know, it's been pretty blustery over the past couple of days and as a result of some of those battered limbs and branches we could see debris on the highway and roadways and travel cautiously. by 8:03 that sun will start to drop off and temperatures are going to be chilly as we head through the overnight hours. highs for today, not too bad, especially when you keep things in perspective. we have the 90s just days away and dive into that forecast and right now check your drive on a windy traffic tuesday. here's mike. >> show two things from this shot, actually, three. wind shaking the camera, the emeryville camera that i zoomed

in over and see the extension off to the left and those are the metering lights and folks are waiting like a starting gate and just right of there we see the disabled tractor trailer and a minor disruption as traffic is moving very nicely past that and the incline. they did slow the metering lights a bit as that truck was reported in lanes and, again, clear to the shoulder and pretty quickly there. a smooth drive and a build at the bay bridge toll plaza and west 580 off of 24 and off the east shore free way we have slowing past golden gate field into berkeley and, once again, at emeryville. typical pattern and not so bad for a tuesday, but we do have a heavier volume of traffic around the bay. typical for a tuesday and slow from san leandro into hayward and a new crash reported there, as well. no injuries reported, but an ambulance arrive on scene and precautionary reasons and that would cause more of a distraction and more slowing in that already congested area.

new report from villagers and police who witnessed eight more girls being abducting adding to the girls that were originally taken. those girls were taken back on april 15th from a remote village while they were attending a government boarding school to get an education. the group and the group's leading part of an islamic militant group bragged and taunted the girls' families saying that in the video they would sell the girls. this is a video where the leader says, i stole your girls and i will sell them on the market and that the girls should, instead, be married on. it took three weeks for the story to apture international headlines and now protest marches across europe, washington, d.c., new york and yesterday here in san francisco where marchers protested in union square.

throughout the day today. area of low pressure that brought the showers and high pressure moves in quickly and the jet just to our north and as a result two systems are competing and we are right, smack in the middle of the two and that's why we have the wind here in the bay area and strengthen as we progress throughout the afternoon. let's take it to your futurecast and give you an idea of what we are expecting. you notice on the key here where you're getting the red, the hot pink and that is fierce wind and the windiest time frame looks like noon to 5:00 p.m. and watch what happens as we head through the overnight hours cool colors coming back into the mix and the wind will drop off and we'll hold on to those warm temperatures. a give and take here in the bay area and temperatures on the chilly side, especially when you factor in the wind chill. 73 degrees today. you'll be at 70 degrees straight up today in san jose and 69 for oakland and 72 degrees out in the tri-valley. i promise you a little sneak peek mother's day weekend and the story is this. we are going to warm up and we're going to warm up big time.

san francisco and the same thing happened a couple months ago and dogs are eating these. >> yeah, good morning to you. this isn't the first time and we had a chance to speak with neighbors this morning and they are really disturbed by this. this latest plate of suspicious me meatballs, a woman picked it up but it was loose meat kind of like ground beef and one of the pieces was shaped in what looked like a bone. today every dog we've seen on a very short leash walking very close to their owners. when some tell us that they would normally go ahead and let their dogs off leash at least to catch a ball. one neighbor walking a dog named sassy told us that word spread like wildfire. meatballs stuffed with pills. san francisco police collected them and investigating whether this is maybe the same person who left tainted meatballs before in the city. in february a dog got sick after eating suspected poison meatballs that were left out and

in july a dog died after meatballs were left out. i just spoke with a neighbor who told me she didn't know why anyone would be so mean to dogs. >> it's scary. it's very scary. that anything could happen. you're not safe in your neighborhood. i don't know. >> are you doing anything differently when you walk your dog? >> always have my dog on a leash. she's more safe with me. >> so, so far the tainted meatballs have been found in a couple of neighborhoods. twin peaks, diamond heights and now this latest incident here in the sunset district. no one has been arrested for any of these incidents, despite a $5,000 reward being offered. reporting live in san francisco, christie smith, "today in the bay." >> very disturbing. prosecutors, meanwhile, promising change after critical mistakes at a santa clara county crime lab went undetected for months.

the wrong chemical was used to test people's blood for methamphetamine between january and march. as a result, seven false positives. a criminalest discovered the mistake last month and the person who made the mistake has been reassigned. the d.a.'s office said all new samples will be double checked by a second analyst, but the mistake could affect cases. high-profile corruption case.
