would be massive search, but three weeks after hundreds of high school girls were kidnapped from their school in nigeria the government has done very little. today, as you say, there are reports eight more girls may have been taken. the leader of the nigerian terrorist group declaring monday what the world already knew, that his group had kidnapped the girls. saying, "i will sell them in the market by allah, i will sell women." boko haram, which means western education is a sin, had captured girls and some already sold across the border into cameroon and chad, say officials there, but more than 200 remain captive. >> these are the girls who are triumphing in high school, they're on the road to become nurses, doctors, teachers. and now they're being sold for $12 each. >> now international outrage from tweets to the streets. activists and celebrities.

hillary clinton, malala yousafzai, the pakistani girl who survived a taliban attack, mary j. blige, all joining in a social media campaign that has brought attention to the issue with the #bringbackourgirls. >> i give kudos to all the brave people who push on social media. people are taking the step to really go out there, protest, raise their voices, sign the petitions and push for accountability. >> nigerian university of maryland senior jennifer soba pearse helped organize a rally later today in washington, but so far the u.s. has limited its involvement. >> is the president considering sending american troops or perhaps special forces into nigeria? if asked. >> i have not had such a request. >> if requested -- would the president be willing to consider that? >> that's considered speculation. >> u.s. officials say they would help, but nigeria hasn't asked. now the world economic forum is gathering this week in nigeria's capital. international leaders are

morning to you. circus officials know what happened. now they're trying to find out why this all happened and they're focusing in on a small piece of equipment that looks a little bit like this. as the ringling brothers circus packs up, headed for hartford today, officials have pinpointed a broken clip as a leading cause for sunday's dramatic crash of a human chandelier that injured eight human performers, dangling only by their hair, and a male performer hurt on the ground. authorities say that the intricate rigging was attached at a single point. a providence fire chief said that the hook about five inches long was well within its rated design load of 10,000 pounds when it failed, sending the performers plunging about 35 feet. >> it was about 10,000 pounds. the estimated weight of the performers on the apparatus was about 1500 pounds. >> reporter: samantha pitard was injured in the collapse. at the vermont circus center where she trained, those hoping

to follow her into the professional ranks were stunned. >> we had just rigged our theatre. it was my first rigging experience the day before it happened. so for me, it was thoughts of, like, what can i learn from this? >> reporter: the hair-hanging stunt was created by a husband/wife team. viktoria medeiros was among the injured and circus officials said the performance had been executed about 150 times without incident since being added to the show earlier this year. but one of the country's most daring high-wire daredevils, nik wallenda, said the accident highlights the need for more stringent safety inspections. >> there needs to be a body that will oversee safety, that will actually give mandates and demands of riggers having to take certain classes and become certified. >> reporter: now, in a statement, feld entertainment, the company that owns the circus, is finding out why this failed part has become critical and determining the next step in the process, that safety remains its top concern, and that it will continue to inspect every piece

total shutdown of the 15 freeway. overhead, we're able to see the full scope of the mess. $59 million project. yesterday, in the high wind, a welder trying to cut a piece of bar with a blow torch ignited this fire which consumed the bridge, we watched it this morning, still on fire, more than 16 hours after the fire started, the bridge collapsed and now they're trying to clean it up. they suspect they can have the freeway back open tomorrow morning, that's a very optimistic approach, but they hope to have that happen and for the people who live out here, immediately, when that bridge is taken down, they'll start to rebuild. natalie. >> thank you so much, jacob. the largest of wild fires in oklahoma. the fire about 30 miles from oklahoma burned more than 4,000 acres and destroyed at least 30

buildings. because of those hot and dry conditions. an amazing story out of colorado where a man crashed his plane into a home that he used to own and then walked away with only minor injuries. the small plane was towing an advertising banner in the denver area when it suddenly went down. the plane crashed into the back of the home, setting it on fire. no one was in the house at the time and no one on the ground was hurt. the pilot escaped with some cuts, and in a strange twist, as we said, the pilot owned this home more than a decade ago, but sold it in 2003. doctors in colorado say they were not able to save the feet of a woman who survived in a wrecked car for five days. 43-year-old kristen hopkins was reported missing last tuesday. a passer-by spotted her car sunday. it had gone off the road, gone down a steep embankment and landed on its roof.

the single mother of four was dehydrated and badly injured. officials believe she spent the entire five days without food or water. it's a miracle that she survived that. a major decision by the u.s. supreme court on the role of religion in government. the high court ruled the constitution allows town boards to start their sessions with prayers. the decision is a victory for a town council in upstate new york that opened every council meeting with a christian prayer. people sued saying the prayers violated the first amendment. the ruling says the prayers are legal as long as no religion is advanced or disparaged. for the second time in four years, the e.r. doctor performed a emergency medical procedure, he was in portland, he saw a woman who was not breathing, she was allegedly taking drugs. it's not the first time the governor has come to rescue.

"today" national investigative correspondent jeff rossen is at the courthouse again this morning. jeff, good morning. >> reporter: hey, willie, good morning to you. imagine your entire life coming down to what your neighbors say about you. that's exactly where oscar pistorius is right now. look, murder trials usually come down to a battle of the experts, but here, it is turning into a battle of the neighbors. prosecutors, if you remember back, opened their case against pistorius with a parade of neighbors who heard shots and

screams from the house. now, the defense is combatting those neighbors with other neighbors, trying to create reasonable doubt. does oscar pistorius scream like a woman? it may all come down to that. prosecutors say what neighbors heard that tumultuous night was his girlfriend reeva steenkamp crying out for pistorius to hold his fire. but the defense claims those high-pitched screams were actually pistorius himself, scared of an intruder. and today called his next-door neighbor to the stand to prove it. >> then we started hearing, you know, a man that was crying very loud. the person was really desperate for help. so also we felt that probably he was in danger. >> i will ask you if it was a low tone or a high tone. >> it was a very high-pitched voice. it was basically, no, please, please, no! >> reporter: he rushed over to pistorius's house and there she was, reeva, on the floor. in court today, reeva's mother listening to every painful detail.

>> i saw oscar, he was kneeling next to the lady, who was just lying down there. and there was just blood all over. he was just crying. >> reporter: then, another neighbor took the stand. also swearing it was pistorius screaming, not reeva. even demonstrating how it sounded. >> ah! ah! >> and was it short or continuing? >> the crying was continuous. >> reporter: to refresh your memory, here's what pistorius sounded like reliving that moment on the stand weeks ago. >> i screamed. i said get the [ bleep ] out of my house. get the [ bleep ] out of my house. >> reporter: how effective have these neighbors been for the defense to create reasonable doubt that it was reeva screaming for help? >> i think on the premeditated murder charges, they've been very effective and they have created doubt as to whether there was an argument that

other. and a diver searching the wreckage of that sunken ferry in south korea died overnight. the 53-year-old lost contact with the communication line and was unconscious when fellow divers finally reached him. and investigators now believe they know what caused the circus accident that injured nine performers in rhode island. the clip that was holding the apparatus in the air snapped, but so far, investigators are not sure why that happened. and coming up this morning, an evening of stars and high fashion at last night's met gala here in new york. but who stole the show on the red carpet? we're going to take you inside the very exclusive fashion event. we're going to begin this half-hour with an extraordinary story. the missouri man who was able to not serve a 13-year prison sentence because of a clerical error. well, in the time that he was free, he married, raised a family, turned his life around, and then the error was realized and he was put into prison. but monday, a judge ordered his immediate release. we're going to talk exclusively to mike anderson and his wife in a moment. but first, nbc's national

correspondent kate snow has his emotional story. >> reporter: tears of joy, long awaited hugs, mike anderson reunited with his family for the first time in ten months. >> it's still a dream almost. it hasn't really sunk in yet. >> reporter: in 2000, anderson was sentenced to 13 years for armed robbery. he had posted bail, but because of paperwork errors, authorities never picked him up. until last july when they realized their mistake. we interviewed anderson in maximum security prison last week. did you think about turning yourself in? >> the thought crossed my mind, but once someone tells you, you know, it's not your job to turn yourself in, it's their job to come and get you, it's like hey, well i'm going to enjoy every moment that i can. >> reporter: after his conviction, anderson became a master carpenter and built a family with his wife. in a missouri courtroom monday, a judge freed anderson, saying he was a changed man. >> i'm just so thankful. thank god for everything.

yesterday in court when the judge said you're done, it's over, the slate is wiped clean, you're free? >> didn't have words. just overwhelmed. i couldn't say anything. i was just thankful. thank god. thank my family and everyone that's been supporting us. >> laquana, you have been right there every step of the way taking care of your four kids all by yourself. what was it like to have him home and to know that this is over? >> it was -- the feeling is just great. i missed my husband. i missed my best friend. my kids missed their father. and i'm just so glad that he's home. >> one of the things that amazed me to hear your story, mike, is you didn't want your family to visit you in prison. >> no. >> you didn't want them to see you that way. so they haven't seen you in all these months. >> no. >> why was that so important to you? >> i just -- especially with children, you know, they're so young and impressionable. you don't know how it's going to affect them. and i don't think any child should have to see their father or loved one like that.

because i didn't want my children to feel that that was normal, something that's acceptable. so i didn't want them to see me like that. >> by all accounts, you have turned your life around. but there was a clerical error. you didn't turn yourself in. when you look at that now, and the circumstances now, what do you think you should have done? what would you tell your kids to do? what have you learned from this whole experience? >> i just learned god is good. he's awesome. he's got us through this. his hand was in this the whole time. you know, it sounds weird, but if i had to do it all over again, i don't know if i'd do anything different, because he's just shown me so much of what's gone on, and the lives that he's touched. it's not about us, he's not about me, he's doing something for other people out there, the stories of people telling me that it was encouraging to them. i got letters from strangers all over the u.s. that i don't even know. and people saying that they -- i have people tell me that they gave up, they weren't praying anymore, listening to god and something told them that they need to pray and they need to

help. just, you know, god working in their life is awesome. >> this was a shock to you the moment the authorities finally came 13 years later and took him away. you didn't know about this. >> right. >> were there moments in these long months where your faith was shaken or you had doubts about who this man was? >> no. because you have to know the type of person he is to know that he likes to take on a lot on himself. and he didn't want to put that burden on me. >> one of the things i think is really extraordinary about this case is that the victim in the initial crime, which you have acknowledged, has come out and advocated for your release. >> yes. >> saying this man has lived a good life, he has changed and deserves to be free. what does that mean to you? >> that's awesome. that in itself is enough for me. it lets you know his character, his integrity as a man. and that people can get -- you know, i don't know if he's gotten over it, but he can get to the point where he can say

hey, that man messed up, he was young, but look at him now. and to hear it from him, that should let everybody know that it's a testimony in itself. >> patrick, very quickly, for those who think this is an unusual case, does it set a precedent for somebody who maybe has not lived as exemplary a life as mike, what would you say? >> it doesn't set a legal precedent, but i think it sets a good moral precedent. it teaches us if you do the right thing, good things will happen in your life and in the law as well. >> you said yesterday that justice can be swift and harsh, but it can also be merciful. thank you all for being here. >> thank you. now we'll head over to al who's at the white house this morning, he's got a check of the weather. >> what a great story. all right, savannah, thank you so much. and we are looking at maybe some severe weather developing tonight into tomorrow in the heartland. here's the setup. we've got the strong winds coming up out of the southwest. a series of fronts and gulf moisture coming up. so, what that means is there's an area for some severe weather.

we are back now at 8:46 be our special countdown to mother's day. mom's the word. abigail is a mom and grandmother who lost more than 100 pounds eight years ago. she has kept it off ever since. she has been an inspiration to everyone around her, most importantly her daughter miley. abby, good morning to you. we see the pictures and what a transformation. how did you decide to embark on this journey? what really motivated you? >> well, it was actually miley's first born son, jacob. >> your first grandchild. >> yes. and we were together for his first birthday and it was awesome. and i realized, you know, i loved him so much that i wanted to be around for his life to see him grow and i wanted to be active in his life. and i knew miley was going to have more babies and i wanted to be the best grandmother that i could be. so i decided that i'd better start getting healthy. >> and you did. >> yes. >> you had the surgery and you have worked so hard to lose this

weight. tell me about your fitness regime. >> it's incredible. i've done four honolulu marathons. >> wow. >> it's so fun. every year it gets a little bit better and better. i don't particularly like running, but i love participating in all the sports activities. i do a lot of hiking in hawaii. the trails are awesome. i do some biking also. >> you mentioned your daughter miley and she kind of inspired you. you inspired her. she had surgery to lose weight herself. i think we have some video of that that we want to show everybody. >> my mom started encouraging me to do this as soon as she did hers. all time, it was miley, i wish you could feel how amazing i feel. you should totally do this. i was a major soda addict. my weight had got to a point where i just couldn't handle it anymore. i had a hernia that i needed to be repaired, and my surgeon said you're too heavy. i won't do surgery on you. i weighed 343 pounds. when i told my mom that i was

going to have bariatric surgery, she was completely happy, she started crying over the phone. having my mom's support felt wonderful. she knew how hard the after part of the surgery was. she was taking care of my kids. she was taking care of me. i've lost 146 pounds now. i walk daily. eat way healthier than i ever did before. when everybody sees me, they're like wow, you look like your mom. it's a really big ego boost. my one encouragement all the way through was my mom. and this, my new person, is my thank you to her. >> aw. well, that's impressive. so you've inspired your daughter. have you seen her since she lost all of her weight? >> no, i keep on telling her to send me pictures, so i haven't seen her at all. >> because you're in hawaii and she lives in sonoma. >> correct.

on the town in l.a. with her roommate, they both discovered their iphones were missing, so she decided to play a little bit of detective. once downloaded, your phone becomes a beacon. it can be tracked nearly anywhere using its gps. sarah tracked her phone to an address 30 miles away in the l.a. suburb of west covina. police told her they were too busy to track down two phones, so they went after them themselves. she knocked on the door, confronted a man about the phones and he eventually handed them over. police don't want people going on their own to track down a phone that's worth only a few hundred dollars. so the question is, if you were missing your phone and the police said we're a little bit busy, we're the lapd, what do you do? do you go get it or write it off? >> we left an ipad in the airport. it's amazing. it's amazing. it zooms in down to the -- we could see the license plate number of the car the ipad was in. but, i mean, it's gone. leave it. just wipe it clean.

it's just not worth it. and you don't know, as the woman said when we did the story earlier, she was like i was a little nervous going there and confronting this guy. and i realize, this was a dangerous situation to put yourself in. >> but it's tempting to want to go and get something that belongs to you. i mean, i had my handbag snatched one day and i was tempted to run after the guy and i thought oh, let me give this up. but the police should have something in place where if it's stolen property and you know, and you've been able to pinpoint, why can't you go get it? i don't need you to break down the door and i do know you're busy, but is there some unit theft recovery to get my $500 phone back? >> like a local community police service or something. >> but you can wipe it clean, and then it's really unusable by that person. >> but you have to buy a new phone. and if you're not up for your upgrade, you have to pay the full price. >> right. >> and if you don't have insurance on it, which they do offer these days. >> it's very expensive. not to mention, it's a pain to get all that stuff back and to put it the way you want it. so even though you have it backed up on a computer.

to lie these days. that's the problem. >> what happened when you could sneak out the window and no one knew? here's an incredible story of survival. a woman has been found alive after spending what they believe was five days trapped in her car after it went down a road and down an 80-foot embankment near denver, colorado. the car landed on its hood, as you see in that photo there. kristen hopkins of colorado was discovered on sunday by hikers. she is a single mom of four. rescuers found her alive conscious and coherent, critically injured, however. extremely dehydrated because she went five days without food or water. she wrote a note on an umbrella. this is pretty ingenious. purned it through the broken window to try to attract attention.shed it through the b window to try to attract attention. she said six days, no food, no water. please help me, need a doctor. you imagine her family is extremely grateful that she was found alive. they say she is expected to survive, but she will, however, lose both her feet because of the injuries she sustained in that crash.

southwesterly flow. tightening pressure gradient, so it's going to be very windy. and between that and the heat, we've got a wide red flag warning area from arizona all the way into kansas, oklahoma, even parts of iowa. we put in motion the active fires going on right now. fires of over 100 acres or more. and you can see widespread from louisiana all the way into arizona. and for our friends right now in a good portion of the southwest, we have a critical -- a wide area of critical fire danger. the extreme area stretches from texas into oklahoma. low relative humidity, 5% to 10%. very windy conditions, and then record to near record highs. you put all that together and we have -- especially in oklahoma and texas, a really, really severe, extreme fire risk good morning. 9:10, the time right now, waking up to sunshine across the bay

coca-cola has recently just removed this as well as pepsi from taking it out of sports drinks. remember, these are consumed by little kids to seniors. so you can also avoid this by reading the labels and not using it. but it's not a safety issue. >> so let's read the statement that we got from coca-cola. they say, all our beverages, including those with bvo, are safe and always have been, and comply with all the regulations in the countries where they are sold. the transition will be made across a variety of farm las from ready to drink fountain machines and allows us to become consistent with the ingredients we use throughout the world. so i guess the question is, if it's safe, why take it out? >> you would say there is no danger, but a food company is going to respond to what the public wants. that's the die unanimous interaction. the fda listens to this. so the issue is, it is safe to use, it's used in other countries, including this country, but there are some options and it will be substituted here. you have a choice because you'll know what it's in. >> let's move on to another one that's in so many foods, basic food coloring. >> right. >> okay, also banned in other countries, but allowed here,

right? >> food colorings and dyes come and go. and many years ago, there were only vegetable dyes. but these artificial dyes provide, as you can see, vibrant colors and people in this country really like that. so you do have an option. they are safe as used in trace amounts. it looks like there's a lot there, but these are trace amounts and they're regulated. so from the safety issue, there is not a question in this country and other countries as well. some countries say it is a problem, we don't want it. but you do have options. if you choose not to do it, and it's a lot of popular foods and all processed, it's certainly not in anything that's happening in nature. you can read the labels and look for things like vegetable dyes. things like turmeric or saffron make things yellow. organic foods are regulated to not have any other dyes. >> would those be natural dyes? >> these are natural, food-related dyes. >> let's move over here to bvos found in some milk.

where is this banned? >> this is banned in several other european countries and others around the world, but it's not banned from being imported. those cows just can't have it in the european union. in our country, perhaps surprisingly, only about 25% of the milk that's produced has added growth hormone. here is the issue. all milk, including human milk, has growth hormone in it. this is talking about adding growth hormone to produce more milk, so it's not a safety issue because there's no additional hormones in the cows, or if people consume it, there is no change in hormone. so you don't have to be worried from the hormonal point of view, but it also would be an animal care issue. >> if i'm looking at a label on milk, how do i know if it's in there? >> you will see if it's not in there. it will say no added hormones or antibiotics. those are not the same thing. >> all milk naturally has hormone. >> correct. dairy products as well. >> gmos. genetically modified organisms. >> this is something that happens in nature over time in

consumers aspirin therapy is not for everyone. drug maker bayer asked the fda for clearance to say aspirin can be used to prevent a first heart attack or stroke. the fda declined that request and they issued a couple update to say aspirin should only be used in high risk patients or secondary heart attack prevention. aspirin is a blood thinner and can lead to bleeding in the stomach or brain. office depot says it is planning to close at least 400 stores in the u.s., 150 of them could be shut by the end of this year. the company says its merger with office max resulted in an overlap of retail locations. the store closings are expected to save office depot at least $75 million. and one high school football player in texas says it's better to give and receive. check out his vine video in which the junior receiver, gary haynes, throws that 50-yard pass to himself. he throws it high in the air, then sprints under it and makes the catch. haynes says he's working on his

you know, sad things happen, but we don't dwell on them and you just live with it and you joke, you laugh at it because it's the only way you can move on. and alzheimer's is a serious thing. i play a frustrated writer who goes home and my mom has alzheimer's. but she doesn't have full-on alzheimer's. it's like it's just starting. so it's about that moment. everyone can relate to where you start to become older and your parents become older and the roles reverse and you have to become the caretaker. i'm not really ready for that. so it's a very funny examination of that moment. >> yeah, that is a seminal moment. a lot of people feel like they start at whatever age that is. but have you felt any of that in your own life? or you're not quite there yet? >> a little bit, a little bit. i'm 35. so it's -- you know, parents getting older, they're not there yet. you guys are watching, i'm sorry. not old, still young at heart.

as mother's day approaches, we're celebrating moms and the amazing things they do. over the next few days we wanted to share stories of mothers doing inspiring work. >> one of those mothers is alyssa mazano who has four kids under the age of 5. >> when she's not busy changing those kids, she's running a nonprofit to help children in ethiopia. take a look at her story. >> i'm a mom of four amazing children. my husband and i always knew we wanted both to adopt children and have children biologically. after having trouble getting pregnant on our own, even with fertility treatment, we looked to adoption feeling as though it was meant to be. we started the adoption process in ethiopia, but the wait was too long and we were too eager to be parents. we ended up adopting our first daughter domestically. just six weeks later, we had the amazing opportunity to adopt our son. shortly after, i became pregnant with our third child, and we had our fourth baby girl one year ago. although we did not adopt from ethiopia, i felt a tie there.

i did some research on what i could do to help. as a former special ed teacher, i decided to focus on education. i found a need for elementary schools throughout the underserved areas of ethiopia. and i learned there was a need for the funding of life saving surgeries for children in those areas. when we welcomed our first two children home, instead of baby gifts, my husband and i asked for donations. we made enough to build our first school. from there, our charity was growing. five years later, we have raised over $300,000, built four schools and funded several hundred surgeries. >> oh, my gosh. >> wow. >> wow. >> somebody doing that without all the home fires burning would be so impressive. but this is amazing. >> thank you. thank you. >> no, thank you for all you're doing. >> what motivated you to do all this? you said you and your husband started off wanting a large family like this. >> exactly.
