>> this is weeks after it finally stopped snowing. dylan dreyer is in wichita, kansas where the temperatures will approach 100 degrees again today. dylan, good morning to you. >> good morning, matt. it is amazing how quickly the body forgets the brutal winter we just had and now we are just jumping into brutal heat. here in wichita, kansas, we had temperatures on friday morning at 35 degrees. now we're adding about 65 to 70 degrees to that. we are in the middle of a record-breaking heat wave across the plains and southwest. on sunday, it was 102 degrees. that is the first time ever temperatures have been above 100 degrees before june. we also broke records in parts of oklahoma, oklahoma city and amarillo, texas. we broke records since this weekend with temperatures in the 90s. i'm the last one to complain about heat, but there is a reason why this is a huge concern in this part of the country. we are experiencing an extreme

drought and now you factor in temperatures that are so warm and humidity that is so low, and also add to that a 40 to 45-mile-an-hour wind gust and any wind that develops can lead to a fire. a fire starts and spreads out of control. we will see temperatures at 80 degrees tomorrow, but it comes with a front that could spell severe weather tonight and tomorrow. savannah. dylan, thank you. at the top, we mentioned the obama administration's dire warning with the changing climate. we mentioned al was at the white house. you had a few moments with the president to talk about it. >> we did. this report has taken years to complete with input from scientists and technical experts the president says if we want to stop climate change, the time to act is now. more dangerous floods. more frequent and powerful storms. wildfires burning more often

with less water on hand to put them out. on the heels of america's warmest decade, more heat waves and periods of severe drought. all symptoms set to grow according to the national climate assessment put out by the white house on tuesday. >> why has it taken so long to get to the point you are sounding the urgency. >> we have been sounding the urgency for the last five years. if we don't do more, we will have bigger problems and more risk of economic impact and more risk of extreme weather events to result in people losing their lives or properties or businesses. we have to have the public understand this is an issue that will impact our kids and grand kids unless we do something about it. >> the president says we can start by reducing greenhouse gas pollution. 97% of studies on climate change say global warming is caused by humans. a gallop poll last month out

says one in four americans are skeptical. some lawmakers on capitol hill agree. >> this should not be about alleviating the guilt of elites, but achieving the best outcome for environment and energy security and most importantly for the people we were sent her to represent. >> do you think when it comes to the american public, when it comes to climate change, they may be ahead in their thinking as opposed to elected representatives? >> the public knows this is a problem and they are concerned about it, but they don't know if they can do anything about it. they think it is something in the distant future and politicians, generally, up in congress, will not get out too far in front of the publ that is why the public's voice has to be heard. >> a delay could be costly. a study by the world bank with cities around the world have the

most to lose with rising sea levels. miami, new york, new orleans, tampa and boston make the list of the top ten. images of recent disasters are not enough to spark change, an artist used environmental data to show what rising waters could do to the jefferson memorial and statue of liberty or miami beach if the tide of climate change isn't turned. the interesting thing is that you look at a number of the industrialized nations and their citizens believe in climate change far more and greater numbers than they do here in the united states. >> worldwide problem needs a worldwide response. al, thank you. you also spoke to the president about disturbing images. the kidnapping of the teenage girls in nigeria. he revealed the nigerian government accepted an offer of help from the u.s. military and other advisers. we have nbc's chief foreign affairs correspondent andrea

mitchell has the latest on that. andrea, good morning to you. >> matt, good morning. that decision by nigeria's government to finally accept u.s. military and intelligence help, that came only after a call tuesday from secretary of state kerry amidst a growing outcry from around the world. for the first time, we hear what happened that night from a girl who escaped. she spoke to an independent film maker. we've obscured her face to keep her safe. she says at first the girls thought the men dressed as nigerian military had come to protect them from boko haram, but they were not protecters, they were the terrorists who loaded the schoolgirls on to trucks. when the truck broke down, already suspicious, she and a friend ran into the forest where they spent two days. the uncle of another girl told about his niece's dramatic escape. >> while they were being driven away, she managed to clutch the branch of the tree and hang there. >> the father of a girl still missing broke down describing the nightmare. as protests continued around the

world, an anger at nigeria's inaction exploded on social media with the #bringbackourgirls. al spoke to the president. >> we've always identified them as one of the worst or local regional terrorist organizations there is out there, but i can only imagine what the parents are going through. >> after three weeks, john kerry called nigeria's president to get him to accept u.s. military and intelligence help. why has it taken so long to mobilize an american effort? >> we have been in touch from day one and our embassy has been engaged, and we have been engaged, but the government had its own set of strategies, if you will, in the beginning. >> yes, i am a boko haram! >> boko haram is dedicated to stopping western education, especially for girls. since the kidnappings, schools have been closed. as for that girl who escaped, still terrorized, she says she's too frightened to go back to

school. and today, world leaders are gathering for an economic summit in nigeria's capital, further dramatizing the stark contrast between the wealth of the oil rich capital and the plight of its terrorized citizens in outlying regions. matt and savannah? >> all right, andrea, thank you very much. >> chuck todd is nbc's chief white house correspondent. chuck, good morning to you. i know you've been talking to administration officials about what this assistance actually will entail. for those who are imagining a special forces team coming in and performing a dramatic rescue, give us a reality check. what's this assistance likely to be? >> okay, this is not the navy s.e.a.l.s being sent in. this is all technical assistance for now. that doesn't mean we couldn't see special forces there if they actually find them. but right now, this is fbi agents who are experts at hostage negotiation, forensic -- you know, being able to do forensic investigations. this is military assistance, but when it comes to assistance, this is more about trying to identify where boko haram could be, where these girls could be,

and also what nigeria's asked for is drone and satellite surveillance capabilities, and again, these are surveillance drones, not the drones you're thinking of when it goes to shooting terrorists. >> it took 22 days for the government of nigeria to accept help from other countries. if you read between the lines of some of what u.s. officials are saying, it feels like they're saying nigeria was resistant and slow to accept the help. >> well, this is a resistance, but it was explained to me this way, that essentially nigeria is a bit numb to the violence when it comes to boko haram, the nigerian government, they deal with them all the time. this is a very violent terrorist organization, and sadly, they have a lot of attacks like this, so they were dealing with it sort of in a way that they've dealt with previous attacks, and it wasn't until that social media campaign inside the country where there was outcry about this that it really sparked the nigerian government to say you know what? we better accept some international help for their own political survival.

>> well, let's hope that these girls will be okay and that the assistance will be helpful. chuck, thank you so much. appreciate it. >> you got it. natalie is here now with the latest on that tragic circus accident that happened in rhode island. natalie, good morning to you. >> good morning, guys. good morning, everyone. we're hearing now for the first time this morning from one of the eight circus acrobats who plummeted about 20 feet to the ground during that stunt gone wrong. samantha pitard says she wants to return to the ring and show the world she's okay. one of the eight acrobats seriously injured in a circus accident is speaking out this morning about the terrifying moment a clip at the top of the chandelier-like apparatus snapped, dropping them to the ground. telling the associated press, "we heard a huge crack, huge noise, and then we were just plummeting to the ground. it was very fast. i remember everything." 23-year-old samantha pitard described a harrowing scene, as she and seven other performers laid under the 350-pound platform. "i saw my troupe leader, she was right next to me, and i heard her say that she couldn't feel

her legs." incredibly, pitard was released from the hospital on tuesday, and despite the frightening accident, she plans to perform the stunt, known as a human chandelier, again. saying, "for me, you gotta get back up and do it again." the illinois native says her fellow acrobats will remain in the hospital with several requiring surgery, but all are expected to make a full recovery. and once they do, pitard hopes they all return to circus life, telling the ap, "i'm hoping to join back up with the tour and show the world that i'm okay, and i'm hoping some of the other girls will do the same." and we are just now seeing newly released security video which shows that california teen who stowed away in the wheel well on a flight to hawaii. the boy miraculously survived the five-hour flight from san jose to maui in sub-freezing temperatures and with little oxygen. now, you see the boy wandering around the tarmac appearing disoriented and being questioned by a worker near the plane who

then alerted security. the 15-year-old somali immigrant flew back to california over the weekend and is being cared for by a child protective services. secretary of state john kerry says he will comply with whatever responsibilities he has in his first public statement on his subpoena to testify about the 2012 benghazi attack. but kerry is scheduled to be in mexico on may 21st and that is when he is due to appear before the house committee on oversight and government reform. kerry did not say whether he would change his travel plans and appear before that committee. four americans were killed when the u.s. consulate in benghazi, libya, was attacked on september 11th of 2012. for the first time, the vatican has released numbers showing how it has been dealing with priests accused of sexually abusing children. over the past decade, 848 priests have been defrocked, and nearly 2,600 others received lesser penalties. the investigation is being handled by a united nations committee on torture. classifying sexual abuse as

torture could expose the catholic church to a new wave of lawsuits because torture doesn't carry statutes of limitations in most of the world. too close to call. "american idol" runner-up clay aiken has a slim lead in north carolina's democratic primary for congress. aiken and keith crisco each have about 40% of the vote, so there could be a runoff. the eventual winner will challenge the republican congresswoman renee elmers in november. we've all gotten a piece of mail at some point meant for someone else, but for most of us, it probably wasn't a $350,000 drone owned by the u.s. government. but this is exactly what happened to someone in new york state who wrote about it on reddit. the package contained parts of a puma drone owned by the national oceanic and atmospheric administration. it was supposed to go to a research facility in massachusetts, but u.p.s. shipped it to the civilian in new york instead. the puma is essentially a flying

great looking day shaping up. over the course of the next half hour. beautiful conditions for today. we are going to cut those wind speeds today. we keep on climbing up into mother's day. >> all right, al, thank you very much. now the scandal that nearly took down then president bill clinton. 16 years after her affair with the president was discovered, monica lewinsky is opening up about their relationship and its impact on her life. nbc's national correspondent peter alexander has more on that. peter, good morning to you. >> matt, good morning to you. monica lewinsky was 22 when her affair started with president bill clinton. she is 40 now. after years of virtual silence and she insists the clintons never paid her off, lewinsky is now speaking out about the humiliation and also expressing her regrets. monica lewinsky and bill clinton, it nearly cost him his presidency. >> i did not have sexual relations with that woman, ms. lewinsky. >> monica, any comment at all?

>> the former white house intern was at the center of a sex scandal that consumed the country 16 years ago, leading to clinton's impeachment trial even as the 42nd president avoided removal from office. now after more than a decade out of the limelight, lewinsky is breaking her silence with a column in the june issue of "vanity fair," writing, "it's time to burn the beret and bury the blue dress." and emphatically apologizing for her role in the scandal. "i myself deeply regret what happened." lewinsky insists her relationship with clinton was consensual. sure, my boss took advantage of me, but i will always remain firm on this point, she writes. it was a consensual relationship. any abuse came in the aftermath when i was made a scapegoat in order to protect his powerful position. lewinsky says she was virtually reclusive in 2008 to avoid becoming an issue in hillary clinton's presidential campaign. but as the former secretary of state ponders the cost of another white house bid in 2016 -- >> obviously i'm thinking about that right now.

>> lewinsky admits she's felt gun shy about speaking out, but wonders, should i put my life on hold for another eight to ten years? lewinsky also reacts to the release of diaries kept by hillary clinton's late friend diane blair, in which blair quotes hillary, calling lewinsky a narcissistic loony toon, even as the then first lady admitted she had been emotionally neglectful of her husband. lewinsky's response, hillary clinton wanted it on record that she was lashing out at her husband's mistress. she may have faulted her husband for being inappropriate, but i find her impulse to blame the woman, not only me, but herself, troubling. one veteran watcher calls it an unwelcome '90s return. >> as a political matter and a personal matter for the clintons, this is not moving on. this is putting a pretty ugly, unseemly episode back front and center in public view. >> monica lewinsky said she finally decided to speak out after hearing about the suicide of tyler clemente, the rutgers freshman who was secretly streamed online kissing another

president obama told al that right now, finding the girls is the immediate priority. meantime, police in california are planning to interview the 15-year-old who stowed away in the wheel well of a flight to hawaii. you can see him in some newly released security video wandering around the tarmac shortly after that plane landed. authorities are still deciding whether to file charges. and president obama will be in arkansas today touring communities that were hit hard by last week's powerful tornados. 15 people were killed in the little rock area alone. we're going to begin this half-hour, though, with a remarkable survival story. a colorado woman who veered off a highway and then spent nearly a week trapped in her wrecked car. she did not have food or water. here's nbc's joe fryer with the story. >> reporter: for at least five days, no one noticed the mangled car in the woods that had tumbled a couple hundred feet down a colorado embankment. >> never thought i'd find anything like that. >> until hope and andy lombard drove by and just happened to look out their window at the right time. >> i walked down there and i saw

a car is upside down and i saw there's a body inside. >> reporter: never imagining the woman inside could have survived, they reported it to first responders. >> what goes through our minds when they said somebody found a car with a body in it, well, we're thinking we're doing a recovery, not a rescue. >> reporter: but inside, kristen hopkins, a mother of four, was trapped, and somehow still alive. >> this is one of the most miraculous things i've seen in that amount of time that i've been doing this. >> reporter: using a sharpie, hopkins had scribbled pleas for help on an umbrella which she pushed through an open window. the messages, "need doctor, hurt and bleeding, thirsty and hungry, six days without food and water, please help me, can't get doors open." >> she had a plan. that plan basically was i've got to stay alive and how do i do that? >> reporter: her injuries were so severe, doctors at st. anthony hospital near denver were forced to amputate both of her feet. but she's alive thanks to

the downside to this is the fire danger. throughout the southwest into texas, oklahoma, kansas, nebraska. we've got red flag warnings, active fires burning all throughout this region. and in fact, let's take a look, we'll show you right now. this is a critical fire area. the extreme fire area stretching from garden city to amarillo. low relative humidity, five to 10%. wind gusts of 20 to 30 miles per hour. long term drought. when you get these fires going, you can get these updrafts. amazing picture. take a look at this. this is what we call a firenado. that updraft catching the fire and bringing it up, looks like a tornado, except wind-wrapped and fire-wrapped. this is from oklahoma. really amazing stuff. you don't see them all the time, but when you do, it kind of takes your breath away. we're going to get to your local forecast. th 7:34 on a wednesday morning. cool enough for a coat. something that you can peel off

we're back now at:41. it's hard to believe, it's been six years since we lost our friend and our colleague tim russert. of course, the moderator of "meet the press." tim was proud of a lot of things in his life, including his bestseller. no argument, though, the top of his list of things he was proud of, his son luke. he's now a correspondent here at nbc and he's written a new preface to "big russ and me" for the tenth anniversary edition. luke, nice to see you, good morning. >> good morning. thank you for that introduction. >> my pleasure. your dad was here when this book came out and we talked about it. he was so overwhelmed by the response he was getting from people all across the country. what was your response when you read the book for the first time? >> well, when i first read it, i actually cheated a little bit.

i looked at some excerpts that he had printed up in his office and i noticed them and i read it, and i read the words, especially that sort of letter to luke, and it ended up allowing me to get a tattoo. i got tjr on my side. and i told himbout that after i had read part of the book and he just broke down and cried. so it really brought us together. we were already very close, but it was the icing on the cake. >> in the new introduction to the cake, and this is all about fatherhood and the relationship between fathers and sons, you write this. there are many different walks of life in this country, but fatherhood is the great equalizer. you don't have to be rich to be a good dad, you don't have to have a fancy degree to be a good dad or drive a nice car, you just have to care. your dad told me a lot that his dad, big russ, was not the most e fusive guy. >> right. >> when it came to him. he knew he loved him but he didn't show it a lot. your dad was different with you. >> he showed it all the time. there was not one day that went by where i did not know my father loved me, but it came

monica lewinsky piece in "vanity fair" magazine. we only have excerpts as of yet, but there's plenty in there to talk through. and perhaps you remember this moment in the clinton presidency. >> i did not have sexual relations with that woman, ms. lewinsky. >> so monica lewinsky is back in the news writing about her relationship with president clinton in the june issue of "vanity fair." it's been 16 years, if you can believe it, since that affair. she was 22 years old and a white house intern when she had an affair with the thenpresident. she's now 40 years old. after more than a decade out of the limelight, she says she's passed up many opportunities but says it's time to burn the beret and bury the blue dress. i think we all know what she's referring to there. if you don't, use your google machine. she apologizes for her role in the scandal, writing "sure, my boss took advantage of me, but i will always remain firm on this point: it was a consensual relationship. any abuse came in the aftermath when i was made a scapegoat in order to protect his powerful position."

happy life, she's thought about suicide. she said that really her decision to talk this time around was after seeing the suicide of tyler clemente, that's the 18-year-old who jumped to his death after a roommate secretly filmed him kissing someone. >> yes, of course. you know, it's interesting because she's obviously a smart woman. she's gone on to get a degree from the london school of economics. but yeah, i mean, she clearly has great skills, credentials. she's held jobs. i believe she tried to start a handbag business, which went out of business, and other things. but to not have a second chance at life, unfortunately, that incident has forever tainted her at the age of 21, that is her history. >> so the question is why is it tainting the woman and not the man? >> a lot of people are asking that. >> it is the lewinsky scandal, not the clinton scandal. people call it the lewinsky scandal. there is a double standard. >> she made a mistake when she was 21, 22 years old. no one's excusing that and she acknowledges it over and over

again in this piece. but what you read of it, she's not asking for pity. if you read what she's saying. but why should that now 16 years later shape who she is? it will, because you hear her name and it does. but she can't get a job and she can't have the kind of life she wants to have. >> you wonder if she's ever been married, you wonder if it's affected her ability to have a relationship. >> absolutely it has. what's interesting as well, people are saying why are we bringing this up again? do you know how many times there's a joke or a song that references this girl's name? i am perplexed when folks say well, let's just move on. well, no one's moved on. >> she can't move on. >> she can't move on. and so she owns her story. it is a part of her life. and if she wants to talk about it every year, folks don't have to read it, but i think that visceral reaction to why is she bringing this up again, it's a part of her journey and it still haunts her journey. >> a lot of people wondering about the timing of it as well if she's starting to talk about this as hillary is potentially mulling overrunning for the presidency in 2016.

so questions about that. >> but rand paul brought her name up now three or four times, including on "meet the press." so, the topic is not going away, if hillary clinton decides to run, including already with folks who may run against her, senator rand paul bringing it up multiple times. so why can't monica lewinsky? >> by the way, people were saying perhaps she did stay quiet for ten or so years and some people questioned whether or not she had been paid off during that time by the clintons. and she said absolutely not. she says the buzz in some circles is that the clintons must have paid me off, why else would i have refrained from speaking out? i can assure you that nothing could be further from the truth. >> bill clinton in realtime paid a price. there was an impeachment vote. but in the long-term, clearly she has paid the higher price. >> absolutely. another story that's caught our attention, this woman in illinois, she lost 170 pounds. that's something we would celebrate. 170 pounds. and she was to be featured, her success story, in "shape" magazine on the website.

very popular website. but when brooke birmingham -- that's a picture of her -- submitted this after photo of herself in a bikini, the writer asked her to submit a different picture, one perhaps of her wearing a t-shirt. because if you look closely there, you see that she has the excess skin that is very common if you lose that much weight, and you have that. so when brooke was asked to take a different photo, she was told it was policy to show success stories in tees, but after looking at other success stories, that was not the case. so there are several women who are now shown in their bikinis. they don't have a shirt on. brooke says the fitness magazine is hiding what weight loss really looks like and feels her body was not good enough to be featured on the website. she wants to start a conversation about what real bodies look like when you've lost that much weight. >> interesting. i mean, we should read -- "shape" magazine sent us a statement. they said this is a result of a misunderstanding with a freelance writer. this does not represent "shape"'s editorial values and the comments made about

good morning to both of you. a lot to get to. let's start off first with a sharp ache that you may feel between the shoulder blades. what could that be an indicator of? >> it could be an indicator of a heart attack. actually 30% of people who have heart attacks don't get the classic chest pressure symptoms. so for women, you want to pay attention for jaw pain, shortness of breath, pain between your shoulder blades, maybe nausea. it could be serious. >> doc, how do i distinguish between my shoulder's hurting me a little bit to i'm having a heart attack? that's a huge leap. >> it's a different type of pain. when you have a heart attack, you do feel chest pressure in your chest, although you may not. you can feel a sharp stabbing type of pain or a crushing type of pain. it's very different than a muscle ache that you know and are familiar with. >> go to the doctor right away if you're feeling that pain. >> in fact, you should call 911 if that's what you're expecting. partly because if you call 911 and you go, the emergency responders have a system to call the emergency room and set up a system where they can facilitate

you getting in through quicker. if you go yourself, by the time you tell the nurse and then they tell the doctor, that can be valuable moments that you need to save your life. >> good to know. next one, a thunder clap head ache. so how is this different, abby, from a migraine or just a serious head ache? >> it's going to be different. it's going to come on very suddenly. it's going to be very severe. it's going to feel like a thunder clap. it's a great description of it. so it actually could be a sign of an aneurysm. so you do not want to ignore it. >> is there something to do with popping aspirin? we always hear about that. heartaches as well. but with an aneurysm, can you pop an aspirin to mitigate the circumstances? >> the risk of an aneurysm is it can burst and cause bleeding. if you do take aspirin, you'll end up bleeding for a longer period of time. >> so don't do the aspirin. >> a dull stomach pain that gets sharper as it moves lower to the right of your abdomen? what is that a symptom of? >> stomach pain is a hard one because often when you get a stomach ache, the exact location can be hard to pin down. but if you have a dull pain,

gets sharper as it moves to the lower right side of your abdo n abdomen, it could be appendicitis. especially if it gets more intense over a 24-hour period, you want to be very aware of this. >> it's not going away. >> what is this next one? mid back pain with a fever. i'm not sure i've heard that combination before. what could that be? >> it could be a kidney infection that comes from an untreated urinary tract infection. essentially it's severe pain in your lower back, very tender if you pound on the lower back or mid back region. and it's very dangerous, because if you don't treat it, the kidneys can shut down and it stops filtering all the toxins in your body. >> so if you're feeling that and also a fever, you know you're in some trouble? >> absolutely. >> go to the doctor and treatment is pretty quick? >> treatments are antibiotics, if caught early enough. usually you can catch it with a urinary tract infection. >> you're getting the next one here. >> this next one, i'll take care of this one. menstrual cramps that don't get better with medication and it's more severe every month. so what could that be a symptom of?

mountain lion. the lion spots just last night. officers issued a shelter in place while the lion hid under a car for hours. animal control officers got into place and tranquilized it just after 11:00 last night. the mountain lion did have a tracking collar on from earlier. animal control officers released it back into the wild late last night. a lot more about this story during our next newscast in 30 minutes. we'll have a look at traffic and weather coming up after the break.

kids just be kids. it's so nice to meet you. >> you are amazing, by the way, we have to say. finding the strength to start an organization like this, when you yourself are going through such fresh pain, how were you able to do that? >> well, as a parent, we went through such, you know, trials and tribulations. and through the whole cancer journey, we saw that the treatment options just weren't available to our son. and it was very frustrating. my husband and i were constantly researching. as you can imagine, you want to do everything you can to save your child. >> you will. >> and you will. we were always asking what can we do differently? what might work this time? let's try something, and it just wasn't available. so my husband and i decided that we were going to dedicate -- we knew then that we wanted to raise money to help support the research, the promise that's out there and help fund some of the projects and the clinical trials and, you know, the muddy puddles project was a great platform to do that.

>> and it was just a rare disorder? not enough children suffered from it in a way? >> the truth is, that's with any child with cancer with the exception of leukemia, there hasn't been much progress made because there's hundreds of different categories and thousands of rare tumors. so childhood cancer is lumped together as a whole but really it's fragmented into hundreds of types of cancer and studied as childhood cancer as opposed to kidney cancer or prostate cancer or breast cancer. >> i hear a little voice from over there. i think your other son is there. >> my son is here. he's 5. >> your dad -- your husband. >> my husband, lou. there he is. the two of you together, you and your husband, are really a force because a lot of times, i mean, it's hard, but marriages sometimes have difficulty making it through something so tough. it seems like it was the opposite for you guys. >> it was. it made us closer because we both felt so -- i mean, the love for ty is just so strong. and it really helped keep our family together through it all. >> he's a magical little guy. >> he's a magical little guy. >> you said you're forever changed. tell us about that. >> you know, i was a typical
