away. president obama comes to the bay area today and so will traffic jams. we'll take a look at where you need to avoid and when. and i'll also show you what's going on right now like over on the peninsula we have a disabled big rig and we will talk about that presidential trip coming up. a live look outside it's thursday, may 8th. this is "today in the bay." a very good thursday morning. i'm laura garcia-cannon. >> i'm scott mcgrew. fire crews on the scene of a mobile home fire that caught fire overnight in sunnyvale. dozens of firefighters able to keep the flames contained just to this unit. no one hurt that we know of, but the fire chief says it is still too soon to determine that cause.

not far from highways 101 and 237. a heavy police presence in two schools in danville in response to a couple threatening messages. the latest message found right on campus. found in the boy's bathroom at baldwin elementary and referenced hurting people on may 8th. that's today. the principal sent out an e-mail saying the staff does not think this threat is credible. they have contacted the danville police department and asked for increased supervision. several parents we spoke with say they're so concerned they're not going to let their children go to school today. baldwin is similar to some found near charlotte wood middle school last week. that prompted officials to cancel some school activities. the former san francisco firefighter accused of driving drunk and hitting a motorcyclist might enter a plea at his arraignment today. prosecutors say michael quinn was drunk when he plow under to

a motorcycle with his fire department rig. the whole thing was caught on surveillance video. you see it there. quinn is charged with three felony dui counts. the man he hit, jack frazier broke his leg, arm and his lung collapsed, but he did survive the crash. quinn resigned from the san francisco fire department last november. texas police back tracked late last night on claims they had captured a man linked to the massive target data breach. "usa today" reports a court affidavit filed by the georgetown police department earlier this week claimed this man was involved in a "large-scale credit breach" believed to be in excess of $70 million. according to investigators from target. however, late last night the department issued a new statement saying the man used a number compromised in the breach, but did not get the fraudulent card information himself. president obama is waking up in los angeles this morning.

he'll make a few more stops before hopping a flight to the bay area. last night he rubbed elbows with some of hollywood's elite including steven spielberg, samuel l. jackson and bruce springsteen. a series of democratic fund-raisers before air force one lands in mountain view. "today in the bay" peggy bunker joins us with more details on the presidential trip. good morning. >> good morning. the president will be here today at 4:00 this afternoon. dive into a very busy south bay visit. of course, a tough act to follow. how do you fill in after he has been meeting with steven spielberg and bruce springsteen. well, we'll give it a good try. ♪ there he is, the boss. bruce springsteen entertained the president last night with renditions of some of his favorite tunes. later today, air force one will land about 4:00 p.m. at moppet field and from there the

president expected to go to the home in los gatos hill and hold a roundtable discussion with 30 people. each of them paying $32,000 a piece to attend that event. the president has remained very interested in the tech industry here. you might remember this previous visit to silicon valley when the president sat down with a virtual who's who. you might see there on the right-hand side of your screen was very ill at the time. later this evening the president will head to the fair mont hotel for a dnc fund-raising reception starts at 6:30 tonight. smack in the middle of rush hour. tickets range from $1,000 to $32,000. now, that's the president's schedule for today. on friday he'll meet at a walmart store in mountainview where his focus will be about the importance of energy efficiency. he may face some opposition there as people there very divisive about walmart. the president is expected to

shake hands with about 100 walmart employees during that visit. if you're in mountain view, though, while he's there, trafficwise, boy, you'll know it. >> that's right, peggy, a big issue there because of the timing. that's what is most critical. not a lot of road covered but the timing is critical. arrived just before 4:00 at moppet field at mountain view. quite possible he will take a helicopter there over to los altos. but if he travels by car, how it affects your commute. the silhouettes of the hangars distinctive off of 101. air force one touches down at 3:50 and head to los altos. highway 101 affected near that area at the start of his trip. highway 85 and 237 likely impacted, as well. if he takes the highways to surface streets over towards the los altos residence. heads to a reception at the fair

mont in downtown san jose and we highlighted the route and we're assuming he will take 280 if he does take the ground route. all that way, though, this all occurs between when he lands at 3:50 and then travel to san jose between 5:30 and 6:00 tonight. a horrible time to get on to the roadway because you have everybody else. again, we talked about obama jam in los angeles and something very similar over here although we don't have quite as much traffic as l.a. looking over towards the current traffic flow right now and not too bad. this is the maze and looking at west 24 at the caldecott. that fender bender reported off to the side of the road and i'll track that smooth drive down the east shore freeway, as well. across the bay bridge without any issues. looking towards the rest of the bay, the south bay including right now moves smoothly but we'll track that. a disabled vehicle north 101 at willow e. watch that just north of university avenue. a live look outside. bay bridge toll plaza and a light, easy drive coming out of the maze and towards san

francisco. a good flow of traffic. christina, i can see clearly the east shore freeway. not the greatest view, but it's clear there. >> you can see clearly, although the rain has come this morning. i can tell you, showers on the radar. a lot of people are going to be caught off guard by this. so, if you're waking up with us, sonoma county, marin county and san francisco county, keep your umbrella by your side. temperatures very mild. in fact, this is a comparison from 24 hours ago. running four degrees milder up in santa rosa, three here in san jose and two in half moon bay. this will help us reach those temperatures just about as warm as where we ended up yesterday. we're talking about the upper 60s to low 70s, again. shower activity for now. not much to show you but this will intensify. just light activity and slice the bay area in half and dictate who is going to get the showers and who will not. san francisco clouds and drizzle for today and kind of a cool temperature for you 63 degrees and 69 for the peninsula and south bay is at 70 degrees with

clouds increasing all day long. we'll be at about 65 degrees for the east bay and north bay is at 69. comfortable conditions even with those showers coming in. hey, those showers are hillsides will stay green for probably another couple weeks. that's great news. a lot of people like to head to wine country for this time of year. for today this is what you can count on. light showers as we get into your mother's day weekend. big-time warming a few 90s out there and next week that heat cranks and potential for triple digits. dive into your extended forecast coming up in just a minute. back to you, scott and laura. may be back for a sequel. the century 21 dome theater in san jose one step closer to landmark status. a city commission voted yesterday to recommend special designation for the site. there's also a campaign to place the building on the national registry of historic places. the national park service will consider that next month. the property owner shut down the

we're in the 50s and running four to five degrees milder than this time yesterday as we head throughout the day today we will hit comfortable levels this afternoon and really temperatures staying put and your sky that is going to change as we head through the next couple days. today, mostly cloud y condition and temperatures on par with where we ended up yesterday. mostly clear to start you out and clouds thickening up throughout today and in san francisco, as well. you want to keep your umbrella with you and that evening fog will settle in. once things start to clear out of here, a big-time warm up coming your way. enjoy the 70s while they last for today and tomorrow and then that warm up kicks in as we get to your mother's day weekend. where showers are expected and mostly in the north bay, you notice the storm track stays well to our north until this evening but by the time you start to make your way home, fair game for showers along the peninsula and down in insouth bay by 9:00 p.m. everything clears out by tomorrow morning and a comfortable friday and then a warm weekend.

smoothly and no major delays and zoom in to the tri-valley and leading edge heading towards isabel and no problems here. south through sunol and 680 north heading towards walnut creek and over towards 24 that crash reported with activity near wilder and the tunnel moves smoothly in both directions and the bay bridge no problem as you approach there and we'll get a look with that live camera and we do have no problems on the roadway. we do have the flashing lights and the crews still here and activity, but it's not for traffic. send it back to you. >> thank you very much, mike. russian president vladimir putin oversaw military exercises involving nuclear forces. the exercise had been planned since last year, but it comes as relations between russia and the west have plunged to their lowest points since the cold war. russian news agency say the exercise simulated a massive retaliatory strike in response to an enemy attack. yesterday putin said nearly 40,000 russian troops stationed

near the border with ukraine would be pulled back, but so far there's been no sign of that happening. this morning, the government says it is okay to keep driving recalled general motors cars. the u.s. transportation secretary anthony fox says there is no need to stop driving the vehicles because there is little risk. recently, general motors recalled 2.6 million cars to replace faulty ignition switches. those ignition switches have been linked to 13 deaths. the car shuts down and the airbags fail. california back in the running to host tesla's massive battery factory. four other states are in contention and ilan musk says it comes down to how fast states can issue permits. also announced that panasonic has signed a letter of intent to sign with tesla. tesla stock tumbled 7% after concern about delays in producing innew model x.

tired of bird droppings on their trucks. a neighbor took cell phone video of the crew at work on saturday. at the bottom of the tree, you can see a small bird flapping its wings. they rescued five chicks from the parking lot with injuries that may have been consistent with falling out of the nest. some worry that chicks were killed during the tree trimming but they say that's not true. >> they took the nest and put it in another part of the tree away from harm's way and continued trimming those trees. >> they really made a big mistake and a lot of us in the city are really furious about it. >> handling the endangered species may be a violation of the migratory bird treaty act. the wildlife is investigating that incident. there will be heavy police presence at two schools in danville this morning in response to a couple of threatening messages. the latest message was found right on campus. it was found in a boy's bathroom at baldwin elementary and referenced hurting people on may

nbcbayarea.com. on to breaking news in su y sunnyvale where firefighters are on the scene of a mobile home fire. flames erupted around 2:00 this morning at the cape cod village not far from highways 101 and 237. "today in the bay "christie smith joins us live from the scene in sunnyvale. investigators say those two people are still unaccounted for. >> good morning to you. i had a second to talk to firefighters before we went on. an elderly couple believed to be in their 70s lived in this unit and they are still unaccounted for this morning. that's raised huge concern because you can see the extent of the fire damage to their mobile home. now, what firefighters are telling me just a minute ago before we came on, they were still spraying water on this. so, of course, they can't go in just yet because of the shape of the unit. they're going to wait for a little more daylight to assess the unit. they're also trying to get the cell phone numbers of that couple and see if they can contact them that way. i was told that their car,

though, is in the driveway. a son in his 40s made it out but neighbors say he has communication yisissues. difficult getting information between him and firefighters but apparently he mentioned he had been cooking. it was about 2:00 in the morning when this fire started. smoke and flames poured from this one mobile home unit in the cape cod park here. because of the closeness of the units, second alarm was quickly called. the neighbors evacuated immediately and got out. they were okay, but, again, the focus turned to this one unit where most of the damage is. a little bit of exposure damage, i'm told on at least one other. this is the focus right now. what they're telling me is that daylight they're going to try and take a look inside. but, again, at this point, an elderly couple in their 70s lived there is still unaccounted for. reporting live in sunnyvale, christie smith, "today in the bay." >> thank you very much. let's get a check at 5:36 of your microclimate weather

update. here she is with a bang. >> 55 degrees in oakland and 55 in mountain view and so it's mild out there to start. i want to show you the difference between yesterday and today. you'll probably notice when you walk out your front door 3 degrees does make a difference. it's certainly noticeable. as we head throughout the day today, those temperatures already in the 50s are easily going to boost us up to levels we saw yesterday. now, the difference is if you live in the south bay, mostly clear conditions for the first part of the day turning cloudy throughout the day and then we're already starting out nice and cloudy here in san francisco. so, two very different parts to the bay area's forecast. areas i'm going to say to the south of 92 are looking pretty good today. you don't need your umbrella if you're headed out there or you live south of 92. if you are headed to san francisco, keep it with you today. 65 degrees and drizzle in the forecast and that goes for the north bay, as well. east bay at 69 degrees and hit

about 70 here in the south bay staying nice and dry and the great news is we're just around the corner from fire season, so, every single rain drop we can accumulate is good news at this point plus keep our hills green for a little bit longer. as we progress throughout the next few days, you can see where we are headed. that warm up is on and very warm as you get into your mother's day weekend. look at the difference between saturday and sunday, much warmer. if you want to hit the beach saturday, fabulous conditions to do so. nice and clear in the city on sunday and 77 degrees and take a look at this. this is just the beginning, you guys. 93 degrees by monday and we keep climbing all the way through thursday of next week. so, another big warm up just around the corner. enjoy the 70s and the showers while they last. we'll talk more about this warm weather coming our way in my next report. let's check the drive, here's mike. >> folks, over towards the peninsula and we still have the issue just off of highway 101. on the right side of your screen you see the big rig on the

shoulder for willow avenue east just north of university avenue from north 101. see a car exiting right now you can get by and a tight squeeze there. you see the traffic moving smoothly here as well as on your maps. no major concern right now and as that commute builds and they don't clear that truck both a distraction and an issue for folks exiting on that portion of the bay, the peninsula. we're looking at a smooth drive for the rest of your bay right now and nothing unpredictable. san mateo bridge as you're approaching the toll plaza there. some sort of hazard. not a lot of detail, but a live look shows you a smooth drive once you pass the toll plaza, a little slowing but that is typical for our speed sensor to track that. back to the maps and we'll show you the rest of your commute and a smooth flow of traffic as you head up towards the bay bridge and north bay and no slowing from 101 or highway 37 continuing down to the golden gate bridge. we'll send it back to you. 5:39. new investigation into the attack of the u.s. consulate in benghazi killed a number of

benghazi. that attack killed four americans, including bay area native chris stevens and now republicans want to get to what they say is the bottom of it, get to the truth of what happened. did the administration try to cover up the terrorist links after the fact, did they ignore calls for more security before that attack happened. because those are some of the questions they want to ask. the democrats, as you said, are very skeptical about the timing of this. just a few months before elections. they're skeptical about the makeup of the committee it's now proposed to be seven republicans and five democrats. bay area nancy pelosi wants that to be even and she's put a request in saying that democrats won't participate unless there are an eastern number of democrats and republicans on that committee. and, finally, the question is the white house going to cooperate or claim executive privilege. just recently released an e-mail from that attack back in 2012. >>o interesting. thank you very much, tracie.

earthquakes willply here and the first game before the 49ers come in here. the fun just started popping, this is wonderful on the brand-new field. less than a month old and mid-april where they laid over 106,000 square feet of grass and 2.5 acres. if you can see the glistening, they just got done watering it for the day. come on down here, i know what you're thinking. isn't this a red, no, actually a ban dera bermuda. to anyone who can see this with their own eyes. what makes this grass a good grass, something that's new that they're trying is it doesn't take as much water and it drains well. right now i guess it is at about a quarter inch and get up to three quarters of an inch which is relatively short and good for playing and also really resistant for when you have the big guys with the nfl out there running and tackling and stuff. i would love to take a step out on there, but we're not allowed to, unless you want me to see if i could become the first person tackled by security or we don't

have to do that. anyway, the turf i can tell you i was out here a few weeks ago when they installed it. installed over a couple days and taking very nicely. the head groundkeeper this is his baby and what was funny is when we were speaking with him, hey, what is the grass like at your house and not so much. doesn't look like anything like this. if i recall berm spots and his wife is not very happy with him. there you have it. you can see the field taking very nicely and getting the morning watering in here for this early, what is it? thurz mo thursday morning here at levi's stadium. they're still installing some seats, if you look over to your right, well, you can see some of the back rows aren't in, but everything outside of, you qkno, the concession equipment and what not everything is in place and they're trying to open this in a couple of months. we'll try to get you upstairs for the grass roof a little bit

keys to fire gates, trails and cal fire facilities. a spokesperson for cal fire says those keys give him access to back roads and other states and facilities throughout california. fleming spent a lot of time in the santa cruz mountains, as well. believed to have two guns with him and is considered dangerous. new this morning, a small earthquake shook southern california last night. no reports of any injuries or damage. it happened just a few miles south of downtown los angeles. the magnitude 3.3 quake hit just before midnight, although no reports of injuries or damage. thousands posted on social media saying they felt that strong jolt. it's 5:52. texting in an emergency. there's new efforts to help you get help no matter what.
