well, good morning, everyone. it's 4:30 on a friday. i'm scott mcgrew. >> i'm peggy bunker in for laura garcia-cannon this morning. a lot to get to. first a look at the forecast with christina loren. we made it to friday. >> there is some fog, i have to tell you about this and a little drizzle. this is, of course, the golden gate bridge. you can see a pretty foggy start to the day and light sheen and indication that your roadways are a little bit slick especially along the peninsula and at the immediate coast. temperatures right now in the upper 50s and down right mild out there and we're easily going

to make the 70s for today and then those temperatures soar. today, tomorrow our last mild days and our changing forecast coming up. let's check your drive, say good morning to mike inouye. >> misty a little bit. drove through fremont on my way here and mist on my windshield and i was using the windshield wipers from time to time. an easy drive as far as the volume of traffic. from the emeryville side you can see the incline or decline to or from treasure island and a smooth flow on the east side of the bridge and on the western side lose it in the low clouds and fog and drifting around and as christina showed you, the golden gate bridge. we can't see the south tower. the drizzle may be an issue for your morning commute, at least right now with slicker roadways. we'll track that and send it back to you. >> thank you so much, mike.

president obama waking up in downtown san jose this morning. taking a live look where he slept last night, the fairmont mot hotel. after a big day of fund-raising and meeting a lot of his supporters. in a few hours the president's motorcade making its way from san jose to mountainview where the president will speak at the walmart store. annette today's speech about energy efficiency, a lot of people protesting the fact that the president will be at this walmart. >> that's correct. right now at this walmart behind me making sure everything is secure before the president makes his motorcade way down to this part of silicon valley. and that according to an advance copy of his speech, he is going to emphasize and talk about boosting solar power and energy efficiency in the united states. today walmart will commit to

double the number of on-site solar projects at american stores sam's club and distribution centers by the year 2020. the president hopes other companies will follow reducing energy use, cutting energy bills either for families and, of course, creating jobs in the solar industry. mr. obama, though, can expect protesters, labor groups and some walmart employees say it does not make sense for the president to highlight walmart. he's been fighting to raise the minimum wage and the giant retailer is famous for low wages and high profits. one grandmother who worked at this walmart wants to give the president a letter about what it's like to living paycheck to paycheck in silicon valley. >> we don't make enough money, our wages already, just for a lot of people, you know, they don't have food and they don't have places to live. some live in their car. >> the white house says this stop is not about wages, it's

about energy efficiency and walmart is one of the retail industry leaders on renewable energy. the president is expected to begin speaking at around 9:55 a.m. he will take a series of executive actions to make sure to drive that solar development in the united states. live in mountain view. >> such a wealthy company, you can see why people have their issues with it. we appreciate that from mountain view. speaking of protesters, they turned out in force in san jose yesterday. >> you're not a guest of the hotel or part of the event, protesting signs, et cetera, you're welcome but please move to the sidewalks. >> now right after the motorcade rolled in they started crowding the front door trying to get the president's attention as he arrived. some hope to end with drone war fare while others in the crowd some 200 strong are calling on the president to key the excel pipeline issue. some say the president is not

focusing on issues during this trip. he is here to cash in. >> the bay area is an atm for republicans, democrats, you name it because so much money flowing, especially, especially in this part of the world because of high tech and social media. >> now, last night's fund-raiser at the fairmont capped off a busy day in the bay area for the president. when you add up the $5,000, $10,000 ticket that was sold at four different events easily the democratic party could bring in seven figures. he will wrap up his speech at 10:00 or 11:00 and then heading to moffett field where air force one will be departing from. highway 101 could be affected by that trip, briefly, as well as the central expressway. coming up in our next half hour, a closer look at possible closures if you're out and about in that area later on. mike will have that for you later on. stay with us for continuing coverage of the president and

streaming his speech and departure from moffett field, as well. scott? other news this morning, police think an oakland man who was arrested in a sunnyvale backyard. he was spotted by a neighbor in a nearby backyard tuesday afternoon. the neighbor told police he watched him knock on the door of a home. after nobody answered he went around to the back. police caught up with him there and arrested him. he was reportedly found with items that were taken earlier from a different home. police in richmond looking for a man they say pepper sprayed a jewelry store employee and made off with thousands of dollars in jewelry. it happened at a sears at the hilltop mall in richmond. investigators say the man asked a worker if he could see a piece of jewelry locked in a glass display case. the worker knelt down and pulled out some of the jewelry and when she stood up the suspect pepper sprayed her in the face and grabbed ten pieces of jewelry and ran away. the family of a central

california teenager suing bmw after the girl died from heat stroke trapped in the car. 14-year-old martinez was driven to school in modera by her sibling last year in the family's 1997 bmw. when they got there, she wanted to have a little bit more sleep before her first class. she stayed in the car while her siblings went to class. when they returned they found her dead in the car. the lawsuit alleges that the double locking mechanism so that you can't unlock the car from inside from any door. a bay area car dealership is standing up for marriage equality with a commercial that some believe is the first of its kind. >> i know i told you to meet me at the dealership, but i bought the car. >> the commercial begins with a woman on her cell phone talking to her spouse. she's in the driveway apologizing about the decision she made to buy the new car and

then the camera pans in to reveal her spouse is a woman. one employee we talked to makes her proud. >> it's really amazing to see, you know, all sorts of e-mails and phone calls come in to the dealership. >> now, that ad began airing on may 1st. the dealership has gotten about 100 e-mails so far mostly positive and just a few negatives. a warning this morning from san francisco officials who say if you don't pay attention to new construction near the golden gate bridge t is going to cost you. here's what's happening. as part of the new parkway project, crews have to move the last exit in san francisco before the bridge back 1,000 feet. this means your last chance to exit before your committed to crossing the bridge comes 1,000 feet sooner than you're used to. if you miss it, you're going to have to cross the bridge, pay your $7 toll to get back. a spokeswoman for the project says the change will be well

marked, but the confusion it might cause could cause some slowing across the bridge. the project expected to last about a month. but, a nice trip to marin county unexpected but always pleasant. >> a very good heads up. if you're not paying attention, very easily whip right past that one. especially if it's a beautiful day, christina, and you're just enjoying the view. >> what if it is really foggy. you have reduced visibility in the area. you may want to take a look at a map before you head out there. nice day today. foggy start in san francisco and look at the difference between san francisco and san jose this morning. we have plenty of low clouds overhead. they're just not touching the surface. that's the big difference. as we head throughout the day today, the fog will settle into san francisco for the first part of the day and then vanish as we get into lunchtime. this is what we can expect. if you're headed out and about this friday, you made it. sunrise 6:05 this morning and overcast and cool to start the day and we'll see a sunny day here in the south bay.

right around midday you'll have to wait until lunchtime down in san francisco and also up in the north bay. sun sets at 8:06 and comfortable conditions and then we have a hot trend to get through as we head throughout next week. i really want to prepare you for the heat coming our way. stick around, we'll talk about that in my next report. for today 71 degrees and becoming sunny into the south bay. really comfortable conditions there. 62 in san francisco and a mix of sun and clouds and a little bit breezy. the further you head inland, the more sunshine you're going to see. partly cloudy in the east bay and complete sunshine out in the tri-valley. 72 degrees and 76 degrees in the north bay. stick around, we're talking heat in my next report. right now let's see, though, is it friday light? we hope so, mike. >> it's 4:40 on a friday light. definitely. looking towards the bay bridge. as christina said, those low clouds turning into fog once they touch the ground. right now touching the deck of the bay bridge and low clouds

and we can kind of see the lights continue to move around and getting a little break over at the golden gate bridge from earlier. a little slowing as you pass by the overnight construction and a lane blocked on the bay bridge itself and no surprise and no problem. easier drive as you approach throughout the east bay and walnut creek and 880 through oakland moves very smoothly right now. the south bay also at speed and the peninsula no issues. watching the coast for possible fog issues and so far no problems reported. if you're local to the area, you know what to expect. back to you. >> thanks, mike. still ahead on "today in the bay" apple's biggest purchase yet. how much the tech giant is willing to dish out for a popular headphone company. the new menu item debut at mcdonald's today. we'll tell you about it coming up.

state education leaders rejected a request from san jose unified school district that would make it more difficult for teachers to get tenure. according to "mercury news" the district and teacher's union wanted to add an extra layer of probation. schools have until halfway through the teacher's second year whether they will be offered tenure or be dismissed. the district argued not enough time and members say that changing the education code should be made by the

legislature. and "today in the bay" follow up. a bill requiring a kill switch to be on all new phones is heading to the state assembly. passed in the senate yesterday. mark leno of san francisco had his proposal watered down quite a bit. the kill switch would apply only to cell phones, not to tablets. in addition the start date was pushed back another six months until july of next year. apple is considering buying its biggest acusition ever. beats by dr. dre. there are reports the cupertino company may pay more than $3 billion for beats. that would make it the largest accusation ever for apple. also one of its most unusual. beats has not created any new technology, just a fashion. this follows a string of high-priced deals in silicon valley that includes google buying nest for $3 billion and facebook's deal for whatsap.

seasoned freis could come to a mcdonald's near you. for that and the rest of the news before the bell is hampton pearson live at cnbc washington bureau. good morning, hampton. >> how are you doing, scott? futures are flat after stocks erased early gains on thursday and close the lows of the session and nasdaq posting the first three-day losing streak in a month. the russell 2,000 index is now down nearly 10% from its high putting it close to correction territory. now, we will get data later today and wholesale trade. the dow which had been up more than 100 points closed up just 32 points on thursday to close at 16550. the nasdaq falling 16 to close at 4051. snapchat has settled charges by the federal trade commission that it deceived consumers. promised photos sent by users will disappear after a certain period of time but the fcc said

photos can actually be saved by those who send them through various other methods. finally, mcdonald's is looking to shake things up. "usa today" said the fast food giant will start testing seasoned fries in northern california, as well as st. louis. there is a catch, the fries aren't preseasoned. they come with special packets which you have to pour into a bag and shake to cover the fries. mcdonald's introduced the concept to some of its stores in hong kong about ten years ago. my question is this, why mess with perfection. >> they are. they are the best fries. >> mcdonald's fries and i said it time and time. we will try these seasoned fr s fries -- >> you think mcdonald's fries are the worst? >> no, the best. >> hampton, thank you very much. >> i don't know, what do you think, christina?

salt and vinegar french fries. >> i think you just outraged hampton pearson. a man loves his in and out, hampton. here's a little trick for you. animal fries and get them cooked well done. oh, yeah, delicious treat there for you at in and out. of 61 degrees at the peninsula and temperatures comfortable today and clouds yesterday still an overcast sky to start the day but nice sunshine coming your way this afternoon. so, basically, your temperatures will stay put but your sky will change. this is what you can expect. becoming sunny by mid-day comfortable temperatures and then the heat cranked. you notice on your microclimate seven-day forecast right there at the bottom of your screen. as we get into next week we jump into the heat wave and really hot for a good stretch of time. at least seven to eight days of temperatures well above average. i really want to point this out to you, if you have outdoor plans, today and tomorrow look

good and then on sunday that heat is on up to 85 degrees in san jose and then monday into tuesday we keep on climbing and had a heat wave already this year, just a couple weeks back. and we hit 100 degrees in gilroy. that's what we're watching for. when the heat will break and just how long we'll be in the thick of it coming up in just a little bit. right now, back to you, scott and peggy. families of some of those killed on 9/11 plan to protest as the unidentified remains of those killed in the world trade center are moved underground. officials plan to house the remains under the national september 11th memorial museum. a movement they call disrespectful. families say they'd rather the remains be stored above ground on the adjacent memorial plaza. issued a subpoena to find out who ordered a back-up list of v.a. patients.

a phoenix hospital has ten days to turn over e-mails and documents about the waiting list. as many as 40 vets died while waiting for treatment at that hospital. democrats and republicans in congress are backing v.a. secretary eric shin russski. they want him to resign from san jose and president obama spoke about the controversy last night. >> if we are serious about making sure that our veterans are properly cared for, then we have to fix congress. >> house speaker john boehner said he does not think changing someone at the top will actually get solutions. he has ordered a review of all v.a. hospitals and he is scheduled to testify about the issue next week. turns out a few minutes of intex exercise before a meal could help you control your blood sugar. researchers found short bursts of intense cardio a half an hour before each hour lowered blood sugar levels compared to doing one moderate workout for 30 minutes a day. scientists are not sure why

here is a live look at at&t park and mccovey cove. you saw it on the ad. tonight the giants will keep the momentum going against the dodgers. game one of the series went into extra innings last night, again. the game tied at 1-1 at the top of the tenth. hector sanchez hits a sac fly to deep right field giving the giants a one-run lead. they would tack on another hold on to beat the dodgers, 3-1 all told. you can catch game two right here on nbc bay area. bumgardner on the hill and our coverage starts at 7:00. >> of course, the nfl draft. like the new super bowl. everybody left to watch it. the 49ers have two picks in the second round while the raiders have one. >> yesterday the silver and black picked mack from the university of buffalo. started all four years of his college did not miss a single game to injury.
