rattles pakistan. more video of the damage, next. >> it is good to be back in san jose. today his visits will affect your morning drive. we'll tell you where. can we expect more honking horns and shaking fists on the golden gate bridge? the traffic change that could get you turned around. the weather is changing right now. we'll see a mostly cloudy start to the day, but a beautiful, pleasant finish as we get into your weekend, the warming trend kicks in and then triple-digit heat on the way for next week. lots to go over, bay area, in your full forecast this morning. we still have a little bit of a misty sky in some spots and that means a little bit of a damp road. i might have a new crash on the peninsula. i'll tell you what is going on for 101, next. taking you to the transamerica bidding now. just a beautiful shot to wake you up here on this friday morning. this is "today in the bay."

i'm peggy bunker in for laura garcia-cannon. >> i'm scott mcgrew. one person dead and 70 others hurt after an earthquake in pakistan. the original quake was a magnitude 4.3 a magnitude 4.6 aftershock has hit the area since then. pakistani officials say it caused 25 mud brick homes to collapse. this morning president obama's bay area visit does continue with a high-profile speech that will take place at a mountain view walmart. this is in downtown san jose where the president is waking up this morning. security, as you might imagine in this area, very tight. the president will be at the hotel for most of the morning and then take off for the walmart in mountain view some time between 9:00 and 10:00 this morning. if you have to be out there on highway 101 or 237, you might

want to reroute that drive. >> nannette miranda is live at that walmart. labor groups say walmart is a surprising choice for the president. it is going to knock him off message. >> well, very surprising but the white house insists this is not about wages today. we're talking about energy efficiency. i have a copy of president obama's speech and he's expected to announce a series of executive actions aimed at cutting carbon pollution by pushing energy efficiency. here's some highlights of the speech he's expected to make. mr. obama wants to build up a solar workforce, provide innovative financing for solar and invest in energy upgrades to federal buildings and improve appliance efficiency. the white house chose walmart to announce these actions because the giant retailer will commit to double the on-site of solar projects at u.s. stores, sam's club and distribution centers by

2020. the president will highlight other major businesses that have made similar commitments. mr. obama will be greeted by protesters, as you mentioned. labor groups and walmart employees don't understand why he chose the chain for this visit. they say walmart is known for its low wages and high profits, not exactly a model when democrats are fighting to raise the minimum wage. but the white house, as i said earlier, said that this stop is not about wages. it's about renewable energy. a security sweep is expected to take place shortly and clear the way for the president's arrival. his speech is supposed to start at 9:55. live in mountain view, nannette miranda. >> the president will expect some protesters there. obviously, many people with different issues but many people talking about the fact that walmart makes so much money and yet you hear over and over again. one person said she knows walmart employees who live in their car. >> that's right. one grandmother is expected to give the president a letter, in

fact, detailing what it's like to live on low wages in the high-priced silicon valley area. >> i think case in point that the president has already been knocked off message by the choice of walmart. mu rarissa meyer was on han and she is on the board of directors at wall marlt. so far it's unclear if she will attend today's event in mountain view. president obama will wrap up his speech at walmart some time between 10:00 and 11:00. air force one will leave from there around 1:00. highway 101 affected briefly as well as the central expressway. do stay with us for continuing covereniage of the president's visit. we'll be live streaming that speech and departure from moffett field when air force one departs go to nbcbayarea.com. a warning from san francisco officials who say if you don't pay attention to new construction near the golden gate bridge, it will cost you as

part of the new parkway project, crews will have to move the last exit in san francisco before the bridge. bob redell live on the bridge. this will have an impact on bridge this morning. >> could cause congestion if drivers become confused about the last exit. if you're not paying attention, you could end up inadvertently being forced to cross the golden gate bridge if your intention was to stay in the city. heading northbound 101 on the final approach to the golden gate bridge toll plaza, you see the sign that says last exit, right after you get through that tunnel. you see the sign and then you're allowed to exit right before the toll plaza. starting sunday workers will move that exit 1,000 feet to the south. 1,000 feet sooner than you're

used to. if you're not paying attention, you'll miss it and you'll be forced to go through the toll plaza and across the golden gate bridge. if you want to get back into the city, you'll have to make a u-turn. they want to give people a heads up about this. realigning the road and moving that exit 1,000 feet south than you're used to. they have landscaping and safety shoulders they have to add as part of this doyle drive presidio project. this is just a temporary realignment and should only last about a month or so. reporting live here at the golden gate bridge toll plaza, bob redell. >> pull over and, there you go. thank you. time now to check that forecast, just in case you're heading to marin county maybe this weekend. >> let's start in san jose. this is the weather that the president of the united states will be waking up to this morning and he is watching

christina's forecast. i say, good morning, mr. president. and then over to christina. >> of course, we always welcome you here to the south bay, san jose. chamber of commerce weather later on for the presidential visit, but i can tell you this morning it's mostly cloudy and those clouds are heavy enough to generate a little drizzle this morning. watch out for that. otherwise nice and mild and mid-50s to kick off the day and here's that golden gate bridge. even more reason to pay attention is the fact that we have quite a bit of fog out there. travel cautiously and probably a good idea if you're crossing the bridge today to give yourself some extra time. let me show you now the sky over san jose. sun trying to break through that cloud deck. it will. we'll have to wait until 10:00 a.m. mostly sunny conditions for us here in the south bay. just gorgeous conditions for today and tomorrow. 71 degrees in the south bay and 67 degrees for the east bay today and mix of sun and clouds there and then once you get far enough inland into the tri-valley, abundant sunshine for you today. 72 degrees and we'll trade these

numbers in for the triple digits as of next week. i'll take you through that heat wave in my next report. for now, let's say good morning to mike inouye. >> palo salto and 101. it's light but enough to dampen your bay area roadways. misty conditions and slick roadways early this morning and sun hasn't dried things out yet. look at the map we're talking northbound 101 near whipple avenue. on the peninsula and reports of a spin out in lanes there. i don't see any slowing on our sensors but there is still a car there and they will have to help it off of the roadway. highway 92 in redwood city. an the other side of the bay an issue because we had a disabled vehicle which i watched get clear and a smoother drive there and now don't get confused on the other side of the bay, east bay. whipple road, another crash. a spinout possibly slick conditions for the off ramp and that is cleared from the freeway, but might affect folks getting off of the exit and see

a build typical this time of morning out of hayward. slight build for north 101 and west 580 coming out of the al altamont pass. bay bridge nice traffic approaching coming out of the maze and we should see the metering lights on any second. there we go, metering lights are on and that is why it will continue to build. back to you. a sunnyvale fire investigators trying to figure out what caused a mobile home to burst into flames, killing two people. you may recall this is breaking news we brought you yesterday. fire crews say a woman and her boyfriend died in the fire at the seenjure communinior commund village. the son who has special needs managed to escape. the cause of the fire is not suspicious. 6:09. the woman charged in the robbery and murder of a south bay millionaire told a judge that she feels bad about not warning the victims that her brother was about to break into his home.

katrina fritz testified against her brother and his friend. she said that her brother, deangelo austin called and told her that he was going to rob riva kumra. fritz is a prostitute and kumra and she said at the time of the home invasion she had had not seen him in a year. she reportedly gave her brother directions to his home and also drew him a blue print of the mansion. fritz said that kumra and his wife were home when they broke in. 6:10. still ahead on "today in the bay" a 49er accused of using a racial slur. plus -- >> come outside! >> oh, my gosh, that is gorgeous. a first one of a kind ad at a bay area car dealership featuring a same-sex couple. we'll tell you why it is a mix reaction, coming up. an incredibly foggy look at pretty much nuth but san francisco and the bay bridge. we'll check your forecast in just a minute.

roadways. your commute building and where you're going to watch the crashes coming up. sounds pretty good. here is today's top stories. in just a few hours, president obama leaving the fairmont hotel headed for mountain view, where he is scheduled to talk about energy efficiency just before 10:00 this morning. he will head to moffett field where air force one will take off. starting sunday the last exit in san francisco before the golden gate bridge will be moved up by about 1,000 feet. if you miss the exit, you'll have to cross the bridge, pay the $7 toll to get back. the temporary move is part of the presidio parkway project. new research shows that more american women are putting off motherhood until their 30s and 40s. more women are waiting to have their first child until age 35 or older compared to 40 years ago. the family of a central california teenager is suing bmw after the girl reportedly died from heat stroke while trapped in the car. 14-year-old martinez was driven to school by her siblings last

year in the family's 1997 bmw. they got there and she wanted to stay and have a little bit more sleep before class, so she stayed in the car. her siblings went to class. her brother locked the car from the outside. when they returned, they found her dead in the car. the lawsuit alleges the car's double locking mechanism makes it so you cannot unlock the car from the inside if it's been locked from the outside. bmw has not commented publicly about that lawsuit. a bay area car dealership is standing up for marriage equality with a commercial that some believe is the first of its kind. >> i know i told you to meet me at the dealership, but i bought the car. >> the commercial begins with the woman on the phone talking to her spouse. she's out there in the driveway saying, oh, i just made the decision to buy the new car and i'm outside. the camera then pans to reveal her spouse is another woman and one toyota of oakland and one employee we talked to said it makes her pretty proud. >> we did not expect such feedback. really amazing to see all sorts

might be a good idea to take mom outdoor early. temperatures this morning are starting out very mild, mostly in the 50s. we are headed towards the 70s. just comfortable conditions. as that natural ac is on. you can always tell when our natural ac is on when we wake up with that full deck of clouds. overcast out there and 6:05 and sunrise happened and, yeah, it's now 6:17 and still dark overhead. and that is because the fact that we still have those clouds and they're going to stick around until 10:00 and clearing out of the north bay by 9:00 a.m. here in san francisco, you'll have to wait until mid-day but not a bad day shaping up for you. gorgeous conditions on the bay and light wind and not too choppy out there. sunset tonight at 8:06 and mostly clear by this evening and then that warm up starts. tomorrow another mild day and then we jump right into the 80s in your inland valleys as we head throughout mother's day.

71 degrees for the south bay and san francisco with those clouds and you'll lose that natural ac rapidly as we get into next week. let me take you through the changes as we head through the next few days. becoming sunny today, for the most part, greater bay area by noon. plentiful sunshine all weekend long and few 90s on the map and then triple-digit heat moves in as we get into next week. next five days work look like this. 10 to 15 degree in some cases and that is a warm up we are expecting. hot on sunday, but not as hot as next week. 98 degrees in this south bay by tuesday. hottest air of the year so far, mike. just want to prepare you for that. are you ready? >> you could never be ready for that temperature. well, i know, spoiled in the bay area. i don't live in arizona. looking over here to a nice drive and northbound 101 moves very smoothly and we had an early crash at oakland road that tied things up just a bit. i was worried about it, but, look, moving very smoothly now.

87 a little build and the rest of your south bay and kick in a little later and the president is going from san jose up to mountain view and then over towards moffett field and also towards mountain view and starting around 11:00 this morning. you'll be seeing some delays along those routes lately. we'll track that. meantime northbound 101 up towards whipple avenue and the earlier spinout has moved out of the road and whipple avenue off ramp on the peninsula side. 880 whipple road. see why things sometimes get confusing in the bay area. still have that spinout over off of the roadway, as well. off the off ramp and folks sometimes get off to the shopping areas, as well. get some coffee and a distraction for you, flashing lites. the misty conditions, maybe an issue for the off ramps until the sun can dry things out all the way. slower drive for the tri-valley and a stall reported somewhere just before you get to the sunol area out of pleasanton.

see a little slowing starting there, as well. typical pattern for highway 84 and approaching the bay bridge, caldecott tunnel nice drive there. over through oakland heading up towards the bay bridge, as well. looking at a smoother drive past the coliseum. our live shot past the coliseum and no problems up to the toll plaza where you do have the cash lanes and the metering lights are on and the fastrak lanes show good movement. that is a break for you. another 49ers player in the headlines this morning. chris culliver is being sued. pleaded not guilty after he was arrested in march. the suit stems from the incident the man whose car was allegedly hit said he blocked his car in a cul-de-sac until police arrived. he threatened the man's 15-year-old son with brass knuckles in an attempt to get away. police and prosecutors have not provided any evidence to back up that claim. the nfl draft continues

today. the 49ers have two picks in the second round while the raiders are down to one pick. >> so yesterday the raiders picked outside linebacker mack from the university of mexico and picked jimmy ward out of northern illinois. meantime, very emotional moments as the houston texans selected south carolina defensive end jadeveon clowney as the number one pick. clowney became the first defensive player chosen first overall. a very emotional moment for him, as you can see. this happened the first time since 2006. hey, by the way, each drafted player got to choose a song that was played as they walked out to stage and clowney chose "the man". >> yeah, that one. the beats commercial, basically. a nerve wracking day for one of the 32 men picked out of the first round. >> not what happened on the draft floor that had him sweating, but what happened before that. check out this video tweeted out by the nfl.

group of journalists who had been waiting eagerly for his arrival. earlier this month, he was ordered to spend four hours a week at the facility after he's completed six months of community service. he has a one-year sentence automatically reduced to 10 1/2 months. connecticut police are looking for the man who took a vinyl sign from a connecticut playground. the sign that was built in memory of a sandyhook shooting victim. the man not found told the girl's mother took the sign saying he thinks the shooting at sandy hook was a hoax. it was put up for grace mcdonald who was killed in that attack. the foundation that put up the sign is working to replace it. a brooklyn boy lucky to be alive after he got stuck under a metal parking gate. fire crews climbed atop a car right underneath that gate to get the 7-year-old out. it took them about 15 minutes. the boy may have been playing near that gate in new york city. he suffered minor injuries and

toll plaza and not that bad, guys. a fire report over the tri-valley coming up. from the new york stock exchange and also over at the nasdaq and there's the bell and the confetti. today is friday, may 9th. this is "today in the bay." well, good morning, everyone. thanks for joining us, i'm scott mcgrew. >> i'm peggy bunker in for laura today. whether they'll take part in a new investigation in the deadly attack in benghazi. set up a committee to open an eighth investigation. republicans say they just want to get to the truth of exactly what happened. some democrats say that the investigation is a political ploy before mid-term elections. four americans were killed during the 2012 attack, including bay area native and u.s. ambassador, chris stevens.

a scathing report and ongoing investigation as many as 40 veterans die while waiting for medical care. this morning, lawmakers trying to figure out who ordered a backup list of patients needing care destroyed. "today in the bay" tracie potts joins us live on capitol hill. president obama talked about this issue during his trip in san jose. >> he made comments about that talking about how congress needs to get involved and they are getting involved. they want to see the paperwork on who may have ordered those records destroyed. >> and i'm now going to sign the subpoena for -- >> reporter: lawmakers are giving the v.a. until may 19th to turn over e-mails and documents about who destroyed a secret waiting list at the phoenix v.a. hospital and had stage 4 prostate cancer. he had to wait three months for treatment. >> all the people that are dead

should be held accountable because it's a crime. >> reporter: president obama spoke about the controversy last night. >> if we are serious about making sure that our veterans are properly cared for, then we've got to fix congress. >> reporter: congress, democrats and republicans are backing v.a. secretary the american legion wants him to resign. >> it will not get to the solution that many of us are looking for. >> we need good information before we start chopping people's heads off. >> reporter: the back log of ca cases has been cut in half. shinseki testifies next week. he is testifying before the senate side and, by the way, that testimony is four days before he has to comply with the

subpoena. >> it is outrageous, tracie. the secret waiting list and the subpoena is not the first time the lawmakers have asked for this. >> no, but the staff here on capitol hill and the veterans administration are going back and forth trying to get more f info on this. they were in the process of going to an electronic appointment system. so, the names that were put on that separate list on the side, he's suggested were not for the purpose of putting people aside and making it look like they were getting appointments out faster. they were keeping those things to put them in the electronic system and by law, by regulation and once that was done once the bills were finished, they had to destroy them. completely different explanation they're getting here on capitol hill. the e-mails, documents, that's what the committee wants to see. >> bottom line, people died and we need to figure out exactly why. tracie potts, thank you much. at 6:33. we now know what is behind a

think probably pretty happy. i don't want to speak for the president. hard to beat temperatures at 772 degrees. lots of sunshine in san jose. here's the deal for today. we have a lot of fog at the coast and that fog is already starting to clear now that the sun is up. let me show you the difference between the coast and right over the bay where we have scattered clouds and seeing a mostly clear sky. so, for today, temperatures will stay put. the sky is going to change, but temperatures very similar to where we ended up yesterday. 71 degrees in the south bay and 69 degrees for the peninsula east bay today at 72 degrees. then the heat is on as we get into your mother's day weekend. one more comfortable day on saturday. look at your temperatures, comfortable here. and then that heat cranks. we'll take you through the changes and tell you just how hot it is going to be next week in my next report. right now let's check your drive and here's mike inouye. >> look at 580 moving very smothly from your camera shot. so, let's get a look at the map.

the entire stretch through the tri-valley. looking really good for west 580 and and travel through livermore and dublin. right around sunol boulevard. we did have reports of a truck bed that was on fire. like a pickup truck with a liner or something going on in the back there. chp went through the area a couple of times and did not see anything as far as fire goes. let me show you why i'm extra concerned. the traffic we widened out and the traffic shot not a big deal and from green to yellow and drier conditions are always a concern with any fire reported. back to the maps and we show a smooth drive and speeds are even better now back into the green zone all the way in towards the south bay. north 101 and earlier crash moved very quickly to the shoulder and the second of the morning and look how light that friday commute not presenting a problem. all your routes into san francisco and you have the backup for all lanes at the toll

the families of some killed on 9/11 plan to protest this weekend as the unidentified remains of those killed in the world trade center are moved to a repository site underground. they say that is disrespectful. the remains will only be accessible to families and forensic scientists and families said they would rather see the remains be stored above ground. 93-year-old golden was a fixture at her local grocery store in texas well known by her neighbors but now a mayor of a small texas town needs to fire a police officer who shot and killed her. golden was shot twice and grazed by another bullet after an officer went to her house on

hotel in downtown san jose. where the president is waking up this morning. security in downtown san jose very tight. the president will be at the hotel for most of the morning and then take off for the walmart in mountain view between 9:00 and 10:00 this morning. you might want to reroute your drive. all right, "today in the bay" nannette miranda is at the walmart in mountain view. the president pretty outspoken about a fair living wage and many people walmart say they can barely scrape by. >> that's right. you'll hear from a woman later on who's living out of her car and working here at walmart, but the white house insists today is not about wages, it's about renewable energy and the president has been big on solar this year. very big vowing to use the power to expand it.

this is video from the white house. solar panels made in america were installed in the first family's residence. it's estimated to pay for itself in energy savings over eight years. today the president will highlight walmart during his speech because the giant retailer has committed to double the number of solar projects at u.s. stores, sam's clubs and distribution centers by the year 2020. protesters will be out here in force at this visit because they say walmart pays low wages quite in contrast to the democrats' call for raising the minimum wage. they demand the president should also call for social invasions. >> i need the president to make things better for everybody. >> that's a walmart worker who lives in her car, as i mentioned earlier and she hopes to give the president a letter today talking about her living conditions. the white house, again, insists

turn it off on sunday and the heat cranks by next week. we're talking about triple-digit heat but this morning starting out close to 60 degrees and not see a great climb today. only by 10 to 15 degrees as we get into the heat of the day, but, hey, still going to be nice out there. the area of low pressure brought us cool air off the pacific and now clear over the golden gate bridge where we're socked in half an hour ago and same sky clearing and few scattered clouds at this point over the south bay. two more mild days and then high pressure builds in and this ridge has a great deal of energy associated with it. if you're going to be headed out today, coastal fog out there becoming sunny by mid-day and cool ocean breeze for you. then that sun will set at 8:06 this evening. beautiful conditions, clear skies. tomorrow morning, not a lot of low cloud cover to keep us cool, although we're only going to boost our temperatures up a couple degrees by today and tomorrow and then we soar sunday into wednesday.

concerned about south 680. earlier car fire is not there and this is here, two right lanes are blocked right around washington. maybe closer to vargas, somewhere between those two as you're heading up the hit of sunol closing a slow down once you're passing the golf course and two right lanes are blocked because of the time being. the rest of the south bay starting a new slow down and new crash around oakland road and first one over at mckie and the rest of your south bay then to moffett, also in mountain view later in the morning. 880 slows south and north towards the bay bridge toll plaza as well as the east shore freeway and san mateo bridge coming off the east bay and no delays for 101 or 280 over there and you have a backup there. the metering lights are on and the fastrak lanes you can see that movement and good stuff and

slow down off the berkeley curve. back to you. >> all right, thanks so much, mike. a big change is coming to a busy san francisco area popular with tourists and commuteres. crews on the presidio project are moving the last exit before the golden gate bridge and by moving it that could really cost you. bob redell is live in san francisco and this could create quite a mess if you're used to getting off at a certain spot. this could throw you for a loop. >> some confusion and congestion. if you're not paying attention, you could end up crossing the golden gate bridge having to pay the $7 toll to get back to the city if you don't pay attention to what's going on. if you're not familiar when you're heading northbound on 101 the final approach to the golden gate bridge toll plaza and then you see that sign that says last sf exit and then you can exit northbound 101 right before you get to the toll plaza. well, starting sunday, construction workers with the

presidio project will be doing a realignment and moving that last sf exit 1,000 feet south. so, 1,000 feet sooner than you're used to. if you're not aware of that, you could pass that exit. if your intention was to stay in san francisco you can pass that exit and be forced to cross the golden gate bridge and have to do a u-y and then come back in the city and pay that $7 toll. they are, of course, doing this realignment as part of the presidio project to install landscaping and safety shoulders and moving that exit 1,000 feet sooner. keep in mind this is a temporary realignment and only last a month or so. they'll be doing this on sunday. come monday if you have business down in this area, just be aware. reporting live here at the golden gate bridge toll plaza, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> head over to sam's there and make the best of it. this morning also hearing

from a tree trimmer accused of feeding baby birds into a wood chipper. tells "the chronicle" that he messed up by allowing his crew to chain saw the trees even though the nests of black crowned knight herons were sitting there. he didn't think the birds were being hurt and setting the birds and the nests aside. spoke to wildlife investigators earlier this week. they are protected by the federal government. more than a dozen cats and dogs recovered from a house now undergoing medical treatment. these animals found in a home in pacific grove. the monterey county says the 14 dogs and 4 puppies and two cats were living on top of piles of trash in the small home. the animals were covered with flees and had a number of infections. spca officers said they will submit the case to the district attorney for possible charges. the house, they say, is inunhabitable. the east county boys and girls club will reportedly lose its charter today. covers parts of contra costa

county meet the operating standards. the "oakland tribune" said it closed last month because of financial difficulties but was supposed to reopen this summer. it can reapply for membership when it meets the proper standards. state education leaders rejected a request from san jose unified school district that would make it more difficult for teachers to get tenure. according to "mercury news" the district and its teacher union both wanted to add an extra year of probation. now, schools have until halfway through a school's second year before they have to decide to offer the teacher teenier or dismiss the teacher. not enough time to eevaluate people properly. members of the state school board say changing the education code should be really be made by the legislature. the bill's author of san francisco had his proposal watered down quite a bit. the kill switch would apply to only cell phones and not tablets. the start date was pushed back another six months to july of next year. america's oldest independent black book store must now find a new home. marcus books was evicted from its home in san francisco fill more district earlier this week. there you see it under the stairs. 54 years after it opened. the store's owner said the property owner changes the lock on the shop. marcus books trying to buy that entire building, that whole house for the last year and a half. unable to raise the $2.6 million needed. going to look for a new location in san francisco. four months after the city banned tour buses at the famous san francisco landmark, nothing has changed. people living known for the iconic painted ladies home say the tour bus drivers are just ignoring a city ordinance that
