ukiah today you may see some of the showers building in the hilltops and also out towards the sierra for the afternoon. we will see a chance, believe it or not, of seeing a little bit of snow with some of those showers above 6500 feet today. watch out for that if you're heading up interstate 80 toward the high country this afternoon. for us this pattern will reinforce northwest winds, picking up like we've seen over the last couple afternoons, wind speeds from 15 to 30 miles per hour today. windy and somewhat cool for one more day. the pattern begins to shift as high pressure heads in. we'll see north winds during the day tomorrow so mother's day we'll see temperatures in the valleys into the 80s and as winds start to turn offshore, not only will inland spot cease the 80s and 90s but down towards santa cruz as the air warms up and drys out as it heads towards seat shore -- the sea shore, santa cruz could see temperatures in the 90s wednesday. the storm track in this pattern, obviously staying way off to the north. the pattern change we'll

hopefully see next week, monday, tuesday, wednesday, notice high pressure keeping things clear and dry. a system coming in we hope will encourage the sea breeze to come back. the heat wave will get started most places monday afternoon. see the temperatures climbing up into the low 90s in a few spots, tuesday and wednesday, but we hope by thursday and friday temperatures will come back down again as the pattern shift returns by next weekend. so today, near 70 in san jose, upper 60s to near 70 around the peninsula. the winds pick up, may not feel too warm outside just yet. that will begin to change for tomorrow. we'll see highs in the mid 70s around santa rosa, low 70s closer to the tri-valley and east bay, upper 60s and 70s near walnut creek. the next five days look at san jose as the guide here. starting to see 80s showing up for tomorrow. mother's day forecast looks great but then a little bit too much of that sunshine as you see, temperatures climbing close to 90 inland on monday, low 90s by tuesday and then upper 90s

and i wouldn't role rule out perhaps close to 100 for livermore, sunol and pleasonton and areas south of san jose towards morgan hill. quite hot. you can see san francisco, mid 80s to maybe even near 90 around wednesday. then the sea breeze will start to pick up and cool things off as we head into thursday and friday. keep in mind the issues over the next few days. a heat watch will likely be issued for the bay area. fire danger going up and air quality suffering as the winds go light and summer like conditions set in by the middle part of the week. kris? >> thank you very much, rob. a long-time bay area congressman is leaving. next our exclusive interview with george miller who shared some critical words for president obama. >> good morning. i'm mike. lots to do in the bay. twin pine park in belmont is home for today's hungarian festival. their mission to promote share and educate about hungarian culture, language and arts

he's not flashy, not a multimillionaire but did inspire a tv show about his living arrangement in washington, d.c. george miller's 40 years in congress, he's stayed away from political scandals and focused on getting things done and now he's done and coming back home. roger has the interview with congressman george miller. >> reporter: if you've been to pittsburgh you know new mecca mexican restaurant, it's an institution. just like congressman george miller. now after 40 years in congress, miller is coming back to contra costa for good. >> when i ran for office in
7:51 am
1974, i ran to try to stop the vietnam war and to do national health care. and when the president signed the national health care bill and i was there at the white house it was the first time i sort of thought, maybe you've done what you came here to do. >> reporter: he's played a key role in starting obama care and fighting to raise the minimum wage again in his final months of office. but it's not just his office he's leaving, the soon-to-be 69-year-old will also leave the famous washington, d.c., house he owns. a house with three congressional roommates. this unique living arrangement inspired the show "alpha house." >> listen, are you still looking for a place to live? >> i am. >> a good arrangement, worked for us. it's some wonderful people people as my roommates. >> who's the messiest of the roommates? >> none of them are great. chuck schumer is a tough one. leon panetta had hospital corners on his bed. you could bounce a quarter off his bed.
7:52 am
i think we believe that chuck has not made his bed in 30 years. fortunately we have a person that comes in and helps clean the house every so often but in between it's a rough go. >> 40 years, i was expecting honestly, someone that was -- i just retired, i'm sick of it. >> oh, i do. it sounds corny, but it's been such a privilege and to play at this level in terms of national policy and to have really my successes is really very excitingpp. and it's, you know, hard to walk away but it's the right thing. >> i thought one of the best things i read recently, john boehner saying, no one would confuse us for political soulmates but we got things done together. >> we did. >> this is from john boehner saying this. >> that's right. most of my big national successes were bipartisan. i worked with very conservative members of the congress.
7:53 am
ted kennedy and i worked with john boehner to do education reform. >> if i can interrupt you. you can get things done in a bipartisan effort, at least some things done. how come that can't continue on a broader level? >> well, because you have the advent of the tea party and money that now threatens members if they do work cooperatively with the democrats, they're going to primary them. they're going to take them out. they're going to get them out of public office. and that's a huge intimidation factor. >> how hard was it for you, aside from politic, just as a father, as a husband, to have somewhat of a normal family life, to be commuting back and forth to washington every week for almost 40 years? >> it's tough. i think the real gift my wife gave me was she was going to raise the family here and i would commute and it would take the tension out of that. so it's a mixed bag. there's no great way to do it with a family. it's a tough life on families. >> you seem a lot of -- seen a lot of things come and go.
7:54 am
with president obama what's the biggest mistake in office he's made? >> he didn't engage the congress enough early on. for whatever reason. i don't know that. but the congress is his partner, whether he likes it or not or whether he thinks it's necessary or not. >> and no one told him or he just chose -- >> i don't know why. really, i haven't speculated on it. i wish it had been done in an earlier phase of his turn in office because he's so talented and he really i think understands what needs to be done. >> a very candid in those responses but one more note congressman miller said he's tired of commuting to washington, d.c. he has 5 million frequent flier miles on united. still ahead on "today in the bay," our wonderful pets from pets in need. this time, not the dog kind but the kitty kind.
