race is interesting to you. >> this is a doozy. this has got all the trappings of real excitement for somebody like me, anyway, because of all the things going on. in some ways, kris, the 16th assembly district looks like any other of a number of races. it's a largely suburban area, straddling alameda counta, and what is gone known as the trivalley. it's also fairly democratic, although not quite as much as state-wide. so on the surface, okay, yawn, it looks like another election, but it's not because of that. there's something else going on. primarily last year's b.a.r.t. strike. >> i heard some of the ads for that race. and i was surprised to hear tat it was like, here is my position on that b.a.r.t. strike. >> yeah. that's exactly the deal. you know, because bad feelings lingering in many people over the last strike, two strikes,
6:47 am
really, a couple months, and candidates positions on the issues. suddenly, we see the strike had a chilling effect on people. we saw a survey, a usa survey poll taken about the b.a.r.t. strike, and it showed much more support for b.a.r.t. than the unions. when you see this, 44% say we support b.a.r.t., 19% say we support the union, that tells you something. fast forward. that kind of information, you fast forward to the spring, and the b.a.r.t. strike has become really the centerpiece of the 16th district election, referring to the ads you were talking about. >> let's talk about how then if it is one of the cornerstone issues, how then do the candidates weigh in? >> there are four candidates in this district. three democrats. tony subronte, arnerich, and baker. the two candidates with the most votes going on. it doesn't matter, republican,
6:48 am
democrat, vegetarian, doesn't matter. two democrats, glazer and sbranti have amassed the most attention and the most money largely because of the b.a.r.t. issue. they have glazer, a former jerry brown consultant. he has criticized the strike and collected over a million dollars. then you have sbranti, an officer in the california teachers association with the action committee, and he defends the strike as largely important and necessary. he has received nearly a million and a half dollars largely from unions. these critical differences may well decide the outcome. >> so what does this tell us about the election? because we know that people were severely impacted by the strike. they have strong feelings about it. they couldn't get to work. >> yeah, 400,000 at one point. memories linger on this, sometimes a compelling issue, you never expect, you never expect it. why are we talking about
6:49 am
transportation? why aren't we talking about schools? no, no, sometimes a larger issue can dominate a race, irrespective of all the questions. if that's the case, the outcome may well have residual impacts for the bay area and the state down the road especially when it comes to the role of unions in california. this is a thing that could have, you know, rippling effects not only here, state-wide, and perhaps for years to come. >> all right, thank you very much, larry. we'll talk with you again soon. still ahead on today in the bay, the broadway adventure for the south bay teenagers, thanks to a hollywood star. >> and a view across the bay right now shows you sunshine and a warm start in some parts of the bay area, and much warmer changes ahead in the seven-day forecast. we'll look at that when we come back.

man: you know, it's funny, this baja quesadilla burger doesn't really look like burger. man 2: grilled beef patty? that's burger-esque. man 1: yeah, but the flour tortilla is, like, quesadilla-y. man 2: it's both, okay? you happy? man 1: dude, it's four bucks. i am definitely happy. [ding] waitress: welcome to denny's.
