good morning, everyone. thank you for joining us. i'm scott mcgrew. >> i'm laura garcia-cannon. evacuations are under way right now after the smell of gas is reported in the south bay. it's happening on embedded way in san jose. this is where that silver creek sports complex is located. several fire engines are on the scene checking out and we also have a crew on the way to the scene and bring you any updates as soon as we get them. also breaking overnight in the search for hundreds of school girls kidnapped in nigeria this morning. it will free the girls in exchange for militant prisoners. released a video earlier this morning showing the girls who it says has been converted to islam. here you see dozens of girls showing wearing full veils and praying. if it is authentic, it would be the video that would be the very

first sign that the girls are still alive. the girls were kidnapped back on april 15th from their school. a tirrer gro terror group by th state states. a massive and well-known homeless camp up in flames in san jose. fire crews just put out a brush fire a short time ago happened at what is known as the jungle homeless camp off of storeiy ro. at first crew husband a hard time getting to the fire but once they did they were able to put it out pretty quickly. firefighters got a handle on a landfill fire. this was overnight. the fire burned for hours at the zanker landfill close to highway 237 and zanker road in san jose. the wind pushed flames around sparking flames and tanbark sparking several spot fires. at the height of the fire, 11

engines were on site. time to check the forecast now. taking a live look outside starting your monday morning looking at san jose, san francisco and the san mateo bridge. warm today, but things expected to heat up with temperatures hitting the 90s, even higher possibly by wednesday. >> that's right. today's spare the air, right, christina. >> unfortunately. we know the pattern around here. we get hot, we get dry and we usually have high pressure building in becomes stagnant. we could be sparing the air all the way through thursday, if we don't get any wind. i don't think we'll see much of it as we head throughout the next couple days. completely fog free in san francisco and you can see that sunrise which is occurring right at this very moment. very cool to get that right on time. you have to love the timing of "today in the bay" we try to do that for you. temperatures in the 50s. 54 degrees for the peninsula and east bay at 53 degrees and my friends this is the coolest day that we are going it see. the coolest start to the day all week long. temperatures are going to be

warm in the afternoon and, as a result, very mild to start. 88 degrees for the south bay. not a lot of cooling overnight as we get into these hot days and today, my friends, i kept telling you, only stuck in the low 90s and trade those numbers in for the triple digits. we'll tell you where else we're watching for that extreme heat. even in the summertime, mike, even in august and september, we don't typically get the triple digits. monitoring this and keep you updated and mike is tracking a couple things in the traffic department. right now, back to you. >> you know, christina, as the temperatures rise we are reminded for the need of water safety as the baby drowned in the east bay. the child is still at the hospital after falling into the pool at a home in concord between concord boulevard and clayton road. "today in the bay" christie smith with an update on that baby's condition. good morning. >> good morning to you. yes, the latest information that we have this morning is that the

baby is still hospitalized but in stable condition after a near drowning in a backyard swimming pool yesterday, mother's day here in concord. a timely reminder about water safety and children as we're head under to a warm week as christina was talking about. concord police were called to a home on ducker court 6:15 yesterday evening that an infant had drowned in a backyard pool. they found a nonresponsive baby being cared for by the family members. police took over the life-saving efforts until paramedics could arrive moments later. that baby was taken to the medical center a real joint effort to save the child's life who has been transferred to another hospital for treatment. now, police have not released the details of exactly how this accidental drowning. how that happened. but we certainly know that these situations can happen very fast with children. again, this week, expected to be

jamming up past the coliseum and northbound the distraction slows you as you're heading up out of the san leandro area. approaching the bay bridge, that is typical. aside from that portion of 880 and the nimitz freeway and typical pattern for a monday as you head through that area. 580 slows westbound over towards the castro valley. northbound 101 actually shows a little bit of an easing. that's what happened and then a second burst kicking in in 15 minutes from northbound 101 through san jose and a smooth flow of traffic there, as well. quick look at the bay bridge toll plaza. all lanes are backed up, however, the metering lights not registered on. the bay bridge metering lights are on. how is that for changing news for you? all right, new this morning donald sterling said he made a terrible mistake. the l.a. clippers owner sitting down for the first time to discuss his racist rant while also taking a few swipes at magic johnson, as well.

peggy bunker joins us with the latest. >> despite repeatedly calling magic johnson a friend, you wouldn't know it from this interview. sterling begs for forgiveness for those comments saying he's "entitled to one mistake." >> i'm not a racist. i made a terrible, terrible mistake. and i'm here with you today -- >> now the problem would say his 35-year tenure as an nba tenure is riddled with racist mistakes but he pleaded for forgiveness for his comments. sterling is now banned for life from attending any nba games, practices and all personnel decisions regarding the clippers. soon the nba will decide if he has to give up his stateam. sterling says he took a long time to apologize because he's just been so distraught. >> am i entitled to one mistake? it's a terrible mistake and i'll never do it again. i'm so emotionally distraught

as the new day begins. we have a completely clear sky and temperatures are going to soar this week. heat wave for the bay area. we'll detail it for your microclimate. your hour-by-hour forecast in moments. and your rush hour traffic shows you jammed up southbound 880. you see the flashing lights center screen just past those tracks overhead and looking at tow trucks that have arrived and two lanes of your four are open and heading south past the coliseum and how that ripples back to your east bay commute, coming up. here is a look at today's top stories. the terror group accused of kidnapping hundreds of nigerian girls says it will let them go in exchange for the release of prisoners. in a video released this morning you can see video of the girls wearing full veils and praying. the girls have been converted to islam. the girls were kidnapped from their school on april 15th. the european officials have

issued sanctions against 13 more people. keep the people from traveling to certain places and freezes their monetary assets. 48 others already face similar sanctions. a baby is recovering in the hospital after nearly drowning in a backyard swimming pool. family members pulled the child from the pool and called 911. the baby is in stable condition. we also have breaking news overnight. there was a deadly shooting at a popular tourist destination in southern california. police shot and killed a suspect at universal city walk. the strip of restaurants and shops that are just outside of universal studios. supposedly it all started when a fight broke out at a nearby lounge. according to news vidiographers at the scene. one person was injured in that fight and transferred to the hospital and one photographer was actually insxwrr jured, as . here's what the police department had to say. >> they responded here to universal city walk and while at

the scene a large crowd that was leaving. people leaving various entertainment facilities and they heard gunshots ring out in the crowd. the officers took cover and while in positions of cover, they saw the suspect, a male, who was armed with a handgun. at that time an officer-involved shooting occurred. >> officers didn't say what else provoked them to actually shoot but one we're keeping an eye on this morning, universal city walk very popular among tourists that come to california. let's get ack of the forecast this morning as we give you a live look at the bay bridge. oh, look at that. i do love this time of year because our live cameras have lots of sun. sunrises and sunlight and that beautiful shot right there. good morning, christina. >> good morning. so many of them strategically placed in all the spots across the bay area to show you. 6:15 right now. you know, it is pretty nice out there right now. all things in perspective a

big-time heat wave coming your way this week. today the coolest start that we'll see all week long and temperatures in the 40s and 50s which is a good thing for the tour, i can tell you right now. otherwise, if they were out here tomorrow or even wednesday doing that, very strenuous bike race it could be dangerous. for today this is what we're working with. temperatures in the 50s to start the day. happy monday to you. want to show you your hour-by-hour changes. basically, this is the trend for the bay area. the hottest point of the day is right around 3:30, 4:00 in the afternoon. let's start here right now at 54 in the peninsula by 9:00 a.m. full sunshine and 62 degrees. as we climb into the lunch hour, temperatures will shoot up from 62 at 9:00 a.m. and up to 79 degrees along the peninsula as you break for lunch and then by 3:00 p.m., you're up to 86 degrees. even when that sun starts to set tonight because it's going to be so warm out there, temperatures still very mild. 67 degrees even when the sun goes down at about 9:00 p.m.

i want to show you the hills of sunol still kind of green here, not for long. as we head throughout the next two weeks we're expecting the hillsides to turn brown. photographers you want to get your pictures, you still have 14 days to do so before our hillside dry up again. then we're talking about fire season. for today temperatures on the warm side and i want to show you where we're headed as we head through the next five days and the temperatures will be warm especially midsection of the week tuesday into wednesday in the south bay and 95 degrees tuesday and we could see 105 degrees in the warmest cities across the bay on wednesday. and then that heat will start to break a touch as we head wednesday into thursday and considering the fact that 74 degrees is average this time of year in san jose. let's check your drive awith the traffic alert, here's mike. >> showing folks what you're talking about. sunshine heating things up and this is making for a tough, as you're traveling southbound 880 and flashing lights and more flashing lights and another tow

truck, thank goodness, arriving on the scene south 880 just past 98 and crash still blocking two lanes and two of them are open and jammed up past the call sol and much clear and add more mileage and transition into and out of the area and surface streets and you might want to use international, as well. again, that's a surface street and this is a slow drive and all the way down past the coliseum and then clearing once you get past all that snag that you saw. the rest of your approach to the san mateo bridge moves slowly and then the real slow down because of the bay bridge metering lights are turned on. forming for westbound 580 and more slowing down the westbound freeway about 55 miles per hour and that's not bad at all. a smoother drive as you approach the san mateo bridge and westbound 580 that's the build we're looking at approaching 680 and now south 680 through sunol and speeds coming down to 55 and

maybe 50 and by the time you reach fremont, back up at speed, again. and even the first burst we saw, i thought that would kick in and more traffic heading north 101 towards 880 and 87 should also start to kick in because it is monday, we have folks that have to head to the office. around the rest of the bay a nice, easy slow. palo alto for a live shot and northbound not an issue past willow and southbound look at all the sunlight and bring the sunglasses because the sunrise/sun down will hit you. back to you. >> always keep the shades handy in california, thanks a lot. cal trans supposed to start paving today. according to the "mercury news" the project will add both directions and supposed to be finished by the fourth of july. crews will do ramp work later this summer. a cal trans person says it has

to be 55 degrees to lay asphalt and nights have been too cold to pave. as of today the last san francisco exit before the golden gate bridge might be closer than you're used to. the exit 1,000 feet earlier than it did before as part of the presidio parkway construction. officials say the next exit is well marked if you miss it, you're stuck. you're going to have to cross the bridge and then you have to come back and that will cost you 7 bucks to get back into the city. still ahead on "today in the bay" a parking problem that is pitting the 49ers against joe montana. back out live to san jose. mike was talking about the sunglasses and we'll check in with christina, as well.

that due to fraudulent billing. and the city doesn't even have a professional team. anger over possible corruption and the cost of the world cup has already fueled massive protests in brazil. speaking of the world cup, today we find out who makes the initial roster for team usa. 30 players will be announced and they could include a pair of players from the san jose earthquakes, forward and defender clarence goodson. u.s. coach has until june 2nd to finalize his 23-man roster. the team will train sat stanford university starting on wednesday though all practices will be closed to the public. the 49ers threatened to stop joe montana from building a massive hotel and entertainment center in santa clara unless the team gets more parking. >> "today in the bay" bob redell across the street from where montana wants to build. good morning, bob. >> good morning, lauren and scott. the former star quarterback for

the 49ers wants to develop that eight-acre parcel of land behind me. montana wants to put in a $400 million entertainment center. this is land that he started leasing from the city of santa clara before the stadium deal was ever finalized. >> i called beach front because we're right across the street from the stadium and we're looking at doing a hotel, a couple office buildings, some entertainment and food and beverage, obviously. >> but the 49ers his former employer could crush those plans. the chronicle reporting that the team is threatening to force the city to nix montana's development because the team needs to use that land for parking for its new stadium. the city is already guaranteed that the 49ers could build almost 800 parking spots there. of course, now, with montana wanting to develop there, that would cause a problem. the city is trying to come up with a solution to make both sides happy. the city has proposed 4,000

other parking spots, but the 49ers have said no to them for various reasons. some are under water or have drainage issues. the 49ers have said, okay, well how about we use the youth soccer fields next door to the stadium for parking on game day and the city says, no, that's not going to happen. the team has indicated that sharing the parking spaces with montana's development wouldn't work either and this is an issue that needs to be resolved very soon. you've got a 68,500 seat stadium. they clearly are going to have a lot of cars when they have events here and that stadium scheduled to open in just a few months, august. bob redell, "today in the bay." stage two of the tour of california starts in just a few hours in folsom. it's a short race and right past the main entrance to folsom state prison. in the league going in today's race mark but just the width of a tire. tomorrow stage three of the race

and several fire engines were on scene checking it out. they are now leaving so things seem to be back to normal and you will have to go exercise this morning. >> we already saw people going into the club sport there. so, the good news is that it is all clear. 6:31. pro-russian forces say people in two eastern ukraine regions have voted overwhelmingly to become sovereign states. they say 89% of people who voted and as much as 98% who voted for sovereignty. russian officials say the results should be respected and implemented. the western powers have called the referendums a sham. members of the european union are meeting today in brussels to expand sanctions against russia. also new this morning, the washington monument is set to reopen to the public. it's been closed for two years while crews fixed big cracks. those ripped through the stone building during an earthquake in 2011. tracie potts is live on the national mall this morning where

people are lining up to get tickets. good morning. >> hey, scott, good morning, everyone. they are lining up, but they're probably going to have plenty of tickets based on what we saw this morning. 1,800 tickets and maybe 100 or so people were in line this morning. the tour starts this afternoon before that. they've got a big ceremony happening, but the real pictures here were from 2 1/2 years ago. august 2011 when that earthquake shook d.c. and shook this monument so violently that there were big cracks in the monument in the marble and the granite. so much so that you could even see light through some of them. they spent the last 2 1/2 years spent time trying to repair it and putting in steel slates to help hold it altogether. 2 1/2 miles i'm told of mortar that they wanted to, that they needed to use to hold it altogether and now it's time to reopen it to the public. the public gets its first chance to look at it this afternoon, although for tourists who are

hoping to come this summer they might want to go online first. first 16,000 tickets went in 15 minutes, believe it or not. i was just checking online this morning and it looks like they're booked on from what i can tell june 23rd. >> well, okay, send us a postcard. >> tracie potts live in washington. >> will do. >> we have our own beautiful view of the bay area as we take a live look outside this morning. there's one iconic golden gate bridge. today is a spare the air day. we're looking for actually a big warm up this week. >> let's check in with christina, good morning. >> good morning to you, guys. good morning to you at home. getting you started as you kick off the workweek. monday, right now, temperatures are comfortable. this is the coolest start that we're going to see all week long as we have this big-time heat wave and this morning still seeing a marine influence and starting out in the 40s and 50s and you can see that indicated here by the light blue. we're actually running eight degrees cooler at this hour at

oakland and san francisco because of that rain influence and then 24 hours ago. however, i can tell you what's happening out there in the upper levels of our atmosphere and our winds are shifting and seeing this dry pattern develop. the warm, dry sloping winds that warm up as they move from land to sea and that will take place as we head throughout the day today. not enough wind. a mix of our atmosphere which is why we're sparing the air. let me take you through your day in detail. remember, your seven-day forecast always rights there at the bottom of your screen throughout all my broadcasts. you can check in and see how warm it is going to be in your specific microclimate. mostly clear, breezy hills to start the day. as we head throughout the afternoon, we'll see temperatures in the upper 80s to low 90s inland and plenty of 70s at the coast for today even when your sun sets at 8:10 tonight. still very mild out there with highs in the upper 80s. 88 in the south bay and 76 degrees in lovely san francisco for today. 89 in the tri-valley getting hot out there. 83 for the east bay and 90 degrees hot and sunny in the

north bay. so, i'm going to show you when we're going to peak as we head throughout the week and finally when temperatures will moderate a touch towards the end of the week. stick around for that right now, here's mike and your drive. >> a much better drive right now 880. this is how quickly things recover when your countercommute direction. the earlier jam up at the rail project and the overcrossing there. and all lanes cleared about six minutes ago and how quickly it recovered. map shows you just south of 98 is where we'll see a burst of traffic still slow in patches and 23rd all the way down towards the area and that will quickly recover over the next couple of minutes. northbound side your commute not a big deal as you head past the coliseum and over the bay bridge. we want to show you the try-v try-valley and approaching sunol for that build in the commute continuing down into the south bay. your approach towards the bay bridge toll plaza and the south bay shows a little slowing for north 101 and 87 coming into downtown and nothing dramatic

there and a live look at the toll plaza, as well. the sun is in your eyes and all lanes backed up and down the east shore freeway, i just got reports of a turkey grazing on the shoulder. i didn't know turkeys grazed but i'll send it back to you. make a dent in the parking shot shortage in san francisco. it's called spot-on parking. lets home owners and businesses rent out their driveways, garages or parking lots. it has access to more than 500 spaces in san francisco. spot-on officials tell "the chronicle" their goal is not only to help users find spots but to also create more spots. costs about $3 an hour or you can pay a monthly fee for a guaranteed spot near your home or office. having lived in san francisco, that's pretty valuable. >> like the parking meters except you pay in somebody's driveway and they have a sign out there. still ahead the search continues for that missing malaysian airline plane but who should pay for it? new details about the ongoing

welcome back. and welcome to a new record on the dow industrial. 16658. in fact, a little bit higher a moment ago. this is another record after we sent one, set one on friday. at 6:40. as the search for the missing malaysian airplane continues this morning, new discussion of who should pay for it all. an australian navy vessel currently scanning the floor of the indian ocean looking for signs of the plane in more than two dozen other countries also taking part in that search. the flight disappeared more than two months ago and the 239 people aboard. australia's prime minister said it could take eight months and cost more than $55 million to find that plane. malaysian officials say it's time to talk about who exactly is going to pay for the search. the tech titan billionaire who owns a piece of land near

landfill close to highway 237. crews say the wind pushed the flames around sparking flames and tanbark and starting several spot fires. at the height of that fire, nearly 55 firefighters and 11 engines were on site. no word on how that fire started. this morning a baby is still in the hospital after nearly drowning in a backyard pool. the baby fell into the pool on a home on ducker court in concord between concord boulevard and clayton road. police in san jose spending much of the night canvassing the area where a man was stabbed last night. officers say the man had been stabbed at least one time and taken to hospital and has not been told his condition so far this morning. the suspect has not been found or even identified at this point. investigators say they're still looking for a motive. the case against the 49ers aldon smith expected to move forward in a santa clara county courtroom today. a procedural hearing. smith not expect today be there and he is facing felony gun charges and a drunk driving charge. the los angeles city attorney is still considering misdemeanor charges in a separate case after smith made a bomb threat at los angeles airport last month, despite the recent legal troubles, the 49ers exercised an option to keep smith through the 2015 season. the downfall of former joe

montana's project could be the old team himself. 49ers organization says it will kill montana's project unless the team's new stadium gets more parking spaces. >> "today in the bay" bob redell live across the stadium where montana wants to build. good morning, bob. >> the former star quarterback for the 49ers wants to build a $400 million entertainment center right there in that eight-acre parcel land which you can see is located directly across the street from the brand-new levi stadium. this is land that the montana star is leasing before a stadium deal was ever finalized. develop it with office space, hotels, shops and restaurants. >> it's where i'm supposed to be right now. people are going to love the area and they're going to block off the street like right in front of our property. going to be all walk. >> it's a dream montana has and a dream that could be crushed by his former employer.

"the chronicle" reporting that the 49ers are threatening to force the city to nix montana's development because the team needs to use that land for parking for its new stadium. the city has guaranteed that the team could build 789 parking spots there. now, the city is trying to come up with a solution to make both sides happy but it's difficult because there's just not much space around the stadium. they have proposed 4,000 other parking spots, but the team has said no to them for various reasons. some have draining issues, for example. want to give you a better lay of the land and a map that we put together here to give you a better situational awareness. you have the stadium right there across the street and you also notice that there is a soccer field. used soccer field on the other side of the stadium. the 49ers opposed using those for game day for parking and that is not going to happen, indicated the city. and this is an issue, a big issue, an issue of parking.
