this morning on our special series "by the numbers," we're tackling your money. >> here to help your sort your savings and the best way to save your salary is sharon epperson. >> good to see you. >> good morning, good to be here. >> for us, you kept this simple. let's start off with the number six. >> the number six is very important, to make sure that you have six months worth of your living expenses saved. i say this because this is the least amount that you probably should have. this is the minimum. you may even want to have more than this, depending on -- think about how long it could take you to find a job if you lose your job. what other emergencies you may have in your home. something breaks in the house, you need to get a new washer or drier. things that add up. and you want to make sure you have those living expenses covered and you don't have to dip into the credit cards and
9:49 am
rack up more debt. so that's why you need to have at least six months worth of living expenses saved. a lot of lenders want to see a nice savings account as well before they're going to give you a mortgage. >> that's your baseline. you start at six months, if you can do more, do more. >> absolutely. >> the next number is the number ten. >> the number ten is the minimum amount that you should be saving for retirement. fidelity has just come out with a report saying that a lot of people are doing pretty well. they're at about 8%. savings rates are going up. but you need 10% to really live comfortably in retirement. that, again, is the bottom line number. you want to try to save more. a lot of people starting out might say how can i save that much? start at 5%, increase 1% every year. if you're a late bloomer, you're an older worker, you may need to save 20% to 25%. >> moving along. less than or equal to the number 30. what does this number represent? >> 30 represents the amount of housing expenses that you should not really have more of your budget going to. so that you keep your housing
9:50 am
costs to 30% of your income, and that's a key number that a lot of lenders want to see in terms of whether or not they're going to give you a mortgage. i'm talking about the principal and interest on your mortgage as well as homeowners insurance and property taxes. so a lot of people figure, how do i create a budget? here's one number to start with and it's probably going to be your biggest expense, your housing cost. keep it to less than 30% of your income. >> next up, the number 35. and this represents an age. what do you mean by that? >> well, again, we're talking about retirement. you should have at least your current salary saved for retirement by the time you're 35. now, some people may not be at that point yet. this is a benchmark, just to give you an idea of where you need to be. if you're going to retire at the age of 67 and you're going to perhaps live 25 years in retirement, you're going to need at least that amount saved. fidelity investments came up with an interesting kind of benchmark for beyond that. three times your salary for 45, five times your salary for 55,
9:51 am
and by the time you retire at 67, have eight times your salary saved. >> i think you probably had some 35-year-olds going into panic mode when they heard that. >> i was doing the math here. >> it's like if you're 35, you're not even close to that number, what's a good way to play catch-up? >> well, are you at the 10% of your pay? are you saving that much? that's the first place to start. if you're not there, you're probably going to have to increase your savings somewhat, and that means cutting back on some of your spending. >> getting rid of like maybe that cup of coffee at the nice fancy place where you get the coffee? >> the cup of coffee. there are a lot of ways to cut back and there may be -- you know, there may be other expenses that you have in your home, whether it's your cell phone bill, whether it's cable television. there are a lot of things that people are doing now to cut back. what a lot of folks don't do is see how much they're spending every day on little things. and write them down. one of the best things i did when i was in my 20s living in new york was to keep every receipt that i had. and i would say going out to dinner doesn't matter because i'll eat the leftovers for lunch. it adds up if you're going out
9:52 am
every day. so once you get those and you see how much you're spending, that's a good way to really force yourself to then say i don't need all of this. i can take some of this money and put to savings. >> finally, the number seven. this is a percentage that refers to the available credit used. what does this mean? >> a lot of people don't realize what your credit score is based on. and one of the factors is the amount of credit that you use. not just the amount of credit on one credit card, but they're going to look at all of your credit cards and what you want to do is try to only use 7% of whatever that credit limit is. so if you have $20,000 of available credit based on the three or four cards that you may have, hopefully you only have one or two, you only want to use 7% of that. so only $1,400. and you want to pay that balance off every month. that's the way to get the highest credit score. we're talking about 750 or higher for your fico score. >> great numbers. thanks so much. tomorrow, your relationship by the numbers. but first, this is "today" on nbc.
