5:00 am
good morning to you, thank you for joining us. i'm peggy bunker, laura is off this morning. >> i'm scott mcgrew. live look at san jose. temperatures will cool off. it will still be hot. we'll check the forecast. >> depends where you're waking up and where you're headed to work. right to the short sleeves and even the tank top if you're so inclined. mostly at the coast this morning that impact of the marine layer returning as a result of that increased onshore flow. temperatures will drop by three to five degrees and meanwhile five to ten degrees of cooling at the coast and around the bay. we'll talk about when we'll really return to spring-like averages coming up in just a few minutes. but, yeah, i'm happy to report the good news this morning, we're done with the hottest
5:01 am
point of this warming trend. back with more in just a moment. right now back to you, scott and peggy. >> christina, thank you so much. new this morning a funeral home in san francisco heavily damaged after a semi truck trying to make a turn jackknifed right into that building sparking a fire. this happened early this morning on market street near sanchez street. christie smith joining us live and two people were hurt in this crash and then subsequent fire. >> yeah. that's right, good morning to you, peggy. i want to get right to it because it really is an incredible sight. that truck involved in that crash is still here off of market street this morning. consider this, this accident happened nearly five hours ago. the truck still sitting here after it caught fire and burned, hit the side of the building at this funeral home here but, also, i want to show you the building itself. it is burned from the bottom. the street side here all the way up to the roof. i just spoke with the owner of
5:02 am
sullivan funeral home she is amazed no one was killed in this and for the most part the damage is cosmetic. also very thankful that this wood building didn't completely go up in flames overnight. the driver and the semi truck told police that he was going down market street near castro in this refrigerated unit. that is what he was hauling when the unit blew up. he lost control and just clipped the side of the building and the fire spread and driver and passenger able to get on their own. two people transported to sf general. their conditions unknown. but i did have a chance to speak with san francisco police this morning and we asked what was going on here, why there are actually three tow trucks here and what they're telling me is that they actually have to drain the diesel out first before they can get this truck out of here because there is a potential hazard. they're waiting for that truck to show up and then they'll be able to move this on.
5:03 am
for the funeral home itself, they're telling me for the most part not a whole lot of impact for their business. they don't have a service planned until next week and they think they'll be able to carry that one off. reporting live in san francisco, christie smith. >> a real inferno there in the front of that building, christie, thank you so much. the police chief in mountainview said he's saddened and disappointed by allegations that one of his officers had child pornography. 36-year-old kevin was arrested by san jose police after they found evidence of child pornography on his home computer. he is a seven-year veteran of the mountain view police force and he is on paid administrative leave during the investigation. the san francisco ceo accused of causing a woman's car to crash and then taking off is charged with hit and run. yesterday we told you about how the alleged victim was suing for an accident on highway 101 last

5:06 am
allegedly hit the daughter twice with a crowbar. tam says he doesn't know who this woman is and they believe this attack was random. reporting live here in san jose, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> thank you, bob. at 5:06. a developing story in san diego county crews are battling seven wildfires this morning and 9,000 acres have burned and none of the fires are near containment at this time. at least 13 homes and an 18-unit apartment complex have all burned down. schools in that area up and down the i-5 corridor many are closed in nearby cities, as well. jennifer bjorkland is live just north of san diego where one of the fires is burning. jennifer at one point yesterday it seemed like they were gaining ground on these fires and seemed to explode to the point they couldn't be contained. >> yeah, peggy, the fire really was just raging yesterday and it was erratic.
5:07 am
it was unpredictable as fires tend to be. the weather conditions, especially for this time of year, really, really have been, you know, handful for fire crews that are working on these fires that are burning over 14 square miles. as sun set on one of the warmest may days in southern california history, the unprecedented heat and dryness made for catastrophic fire weather. >> i never thought our house would be in danger like this. but it's really a scary. >> reporter: homeowners forced to evacuate as flames chase them out of their neighborhoods. some will have nothing to come home to, despite their best efforts to clear brush and be fire safe. >> i tried to make it as good as possible, but, naturally, who cares right now. house is gone. >> i've never seen anything like this in 20 years. >> reporter: a dangerous fire season. the hot santa ana winds howling through southern california neighborhoods are not typical so early in the year.
5:08 am
>> this is something i have not seen in my career. i've been in this fire service for 27 years and i have. seen it this dry, this hot for this long in may. >> they've been asking to evacuate. >> reporter: homeowners like christopher plan to make a stand to save his home. >> just trying to prepare perhaps embers or something might carry over into god knows what, but definitely trying to prevent a nightmare. >> reporter: a nightmare that may be far outside of his control. and as tempting as it was to stay behind and defy those mandatory evacuation orders, the firefighters really don't like it. they don't recommend it. they say the last thing they want to have to do is come back in and risk their lives to save yours. i'm jennifer bjorkland live in carlsbad, back to you. >> jennifer when we look at some of those homes, some beautiful homes that were in danger and some really very, very nice neighborhoods and are these the typical areas in san diego
5:09 am
county that get hit with the summer and fall fires? >> yeah. i mean, these are areas that are sort of, i guess, typically in the line of fire and, you know, san diego has seen catastrophic fires like this before. but for these homeowners, they've lived through this before and they've survived it before. so to lose their home so early in the season and so unexpectedly, it's just devastating, peggy. >> as you mentioned, jennifer, they usually don't get that until later in the year, thank you so much. the images coming out of san diego amazing. you can see this plane here swooping overhead and dropping tardant on the flames below. firefighters bring us an update in about 25 minutes. as always, get the latest on the situation there in san diego county on our website. you can find that at nbcbay area.com. menlo park will talk

5:17 am
degrees. but much cooler for today in san francisco it's still going to be hot out there in the tri-valley. 95 degrees there and 95 in the east bay and really sunny out there in the tri-valley. i can tell you, you don't want to go without the sunscreen there and temperatures will remain on the mild side for the weekend. keep the cool down coming and onshore flow will increase and that heat backs off substantially as we finish off the week. here's mike and that drive. >> keep that heat off right now. that traffic has backed off, as well. very early for any slowing. we see the yellow blips around the south bay and 60 miles per hour, no concern. the construction over here 880 and the 17 interchange and the connectors, though, have reopened after overnight closure. smooth drive for most of the rest of the bay. we told you we'd talk about that and that mois xhr off the coast and the cooling, you'll see some fog, as well. want to show you a little slowing leading edge west 580 coming through livermore and no

a very special and very emotional morning in manhattan today and just a few hours president obama will join the family members and victims of the 9/11 attacks as well as survivors and first responders to officially open the 9/11 museum and memorial. jay gray is live in new york city with a look at the museum. today is about the families getting a preview before this will be open to the public. >> no, peggy, you're absolutely
5:23 am
right. those most affected getting their first look. the museum won't be open to the public until some time of middle of next week. we did get a sneak peek inside it's emotional, overwhelming and at times really a journey back through what was a very dark time in our nation's history. the images and words immediately surround you. along with the haunting pieces of buildings and lives ripped apart. the world trade center tridents, the survivor stairs used by hundreds to escape. a msection of the massive antena and pieces of the jet that slam under to the north tower and ladder truck from company 3 mangled by debris as that tower collapsed. remnants of the terror attacks that now share this space with overwhelming memories, emotions and a strong message of

determination. >> you can't let this happen, again, but they didn't win. we came out of this stronger, more determined than ever. >> reporter: this museum and memorial is a clear symbol of that resolve. standing in the original footprint of the twin towers. >> at the very sight where terrorists sought to destroy us, we have rebuilt. >> reporter: creating a place where the world can gather to remember and reflect. >> for me, this is the beginning. the beginning of this institution's true mission to engage and inspire the generations that follow us. >> reporter: to make sure that they never forget. now, look, not only will we hear from the president in a couple hours but family members of victims, survivors and first responders all talking and the museum will be closed for a few days as those families and other groups get private tours. it will oepen to the public next wednesday, may 21st. that's the latest live outside the museum, i'm jay gray.

peggy, back to you. >> one of those installations we just saw in your piece there had that beautiful blue tile memorializing what a beautiful, blue tuesday september 11th was. many people think back to that day and how clear the sky was before everything happened. >> yeah, it was spotless. it was an amazing day here in the city and it all just changed so dramatically and so quickly. and you get that sense from being inside this museum. i think it's going to be a must-see for anyone traveling to new york. i can also tell you that while there's so many difficult memories there, organizers also want this spot to be one of resilience, one of pride and they want a message to ring from this area that it will never happen again. and that's something that you get once you finish the tour here. >> devastating day for our country, but a very moment to be proud, as well, as everyone recovered. thank you, jay, appreciate that.
5:26 am
let's check in with meteorologist christina loren. >> good morning to you, scott, peggy, everybody at home. we are getting so much closer to the weekend at this point and i'm happy to report, we are done with the hottest point of this heat wave. although it will still be hot out there. today temperatures starting out mild mostly in the 60s and a couple 40s out there with the return of onshore flow at the immediate coast. later on today, 93 degrees in the south bay and temperatures substantially cooler at the coast. 95, though, for the north bay. here's mike inouye and your morning drive. >> also want to show the best view from the foster city side that we get of the sun coming up and the san mateo bridge. you don't have to worry about the traffic right now, as well. peaceful traffic shot, i don't always get to show you that. san mateo bridge at the top and move smoothly in the peninsula and light flow of traffic and a tiny build for the south bay and a new crash, we may have one

semi truck slams into a funeral home sending two people to the hospital. and also take a look here at the san diego wildfires that are burning right now as we continue to follow more than nine wildfires out of control. crews there struggling to get control over these flames. meanwhile, we're going to get some heat relief for today. not as hot through your inland valleys, although it will still be on the warm side. coastal cities, though, getting significant cooling as that ocean breeze returns. we'll take you through your weekend forecast in moments. and we're looking at that build for your commute through the tri-valley. this is dublin and also the south bay. we have an update on that crash for highway 17, coming up. a live look outside at downtown san jose. this is thursday, may 15th and this is "today in the bay." well, good morning, everyone. 5:30, i'm scott mcgrew.
5:31 am
>> i'm peggy bunker, laura is off this morning. san jose alum rock park will be closed today due to potential fire danger. the weather conditions are just too dangerous to keep that park open. we'll check in with meteorologist christina loren in five minutes and find out exactly what temps can reach today. new this morning, crews will soon begin patching up a san francisco funeral home. it was damaged when a flaming semi truck lost control and slammed into the side of the building. this all happened early this morning on market street near sanchez street. "today in the bay" christie smith joins us live at the crash site with an update including what happened to the passenger and driver of this truck that was on fire. >> yeah, good morning to you, scott. you have to see this wreckage is pretty amazing when you look at it and see it's still sitting here this morning as it ended up. there was a small explosion according to the driver who says he lost control and crossed over market street and then clipped the side of this building and
5:32 am
then a ball of flames and even firefighters say looking at this wreck sitting here, they thought, there would be fatalities. the two people who were inside of this actually made it out on their own. it was 12:30 overnight when firefighters arrived to find a big rig had clipped the side of sullivan's funeral home here on market street. the corner exterior of the building was burning, too. the driver of this big rig told police he heard some sort of explosion inside the unit and that's when he lost control. at sullivan's funeral home there was actually one person inside when this happened. >> we have a lady that lives here, she was here and she thought it was just a traffic accident out on market street. she went to look out the window and there was fire and so then they called the fire department and they called us and we came down and, as you can see, it was quite, quite a deal. but looks like just superficial damage, we're very lucky.
5:33 am
>> now, the two people inside were taken to the hospital. we're told they had non-life threatening injuries and firefighters say that part is really amazing. the tires had burned off and there was actually burning fuel leaking and running down market street when they arrived. it was pretty amazing scene. right now what they tell us they're doing is waiting for a hazmat truck to arrive because they need to drain about 150 gallons of fuel from this truck before they can move it. now, the owners at sullivan, again, they think the damage is cosmetic and shouldn't affect them too much in terms of their business. westbound lanes still closed and eastbound could possibly open at 6:00 this morning. before we go, i wanted to show you the damage on the corner of this building and what firefighters are saying really helped save it is that on this side where the damage is, it's stucco. you can see towards the door maybe 25 feet down the building becomes wood. so, they say that had the truck gone a little bit further they
5:34 am
could have lost the whole building because it is wood. but at this point they're saying two people hurt, nonlife threatening injuries and the damage to the building is mostly cosmetic. reporting live in san francisco, christie smith, "today in the bay." >> okay, thank you. now to a developing story out of southern california. we showed you the pictures earlier in san diego county. life is on hold for many who live around that area. nine wildfires burning down homes and blackening the sky and right now the various fires have burned about 9,000 acres, as well. they destroyed 13 homes and an 18-unit apartment complex. the biggest of the fires are burning on camp pendleton, hundreds of marines have evacuated and crews will have to battle high temperatures today and also strong winds. schools in san diego, all of them and more than 20 schools in nearby cities will be closed today, that includes cal state san marcos which has canceled a graduation ceremony scheduled for this weekend. in some cases just moments
5:35 am
before the flames took down their home. now, a perfect picture here as the issue that has the wind and the very, very dry weather that we've had created a small twister of flames in this video. this was taken at the highway fire which is burning in the deer springs area. look at this little twister shooting up into the sky. now that particular fire right now is only 5% contained. walnut creek police looking for your help in solving three suspicious fires. the brush fire broke out from regional spaces. in fact, three fires. the cause of the fire is unknown but investigators do think they're suspicious. you are asked to call the arson hotline. the woman accused of attacking a little girl inside a south bay walmart with a crowbar was looking for a fight. this happened this week at the walmart on story road in san jose near 280 and 101. "today in the bay" bob redell is live outside the store where the woman was arrested.
5:36 am
the suspect is supposed to make her first court appearance today. >> yes, you are correct. expected at noon for assault with a deadly weapon for allegedly randomly attacking a 4-year-old child who was on a shopping trip here with her family at this walmart here on story road. >> if you just a little bit. >> reporter: and as you can see the young child is back at home with her father recovering from the crowbar attack while her alleged attacker is in jail. police have arrested an 18-year-old transient and faces one charge of assault with a deadly weapon. she entered this walmart already armed with that crowbar and attacked someone at random no matter what and they tell us it was this 4-year-old child. an exclusive interview with nbc bay area they tell us that she hit her first in the head and
5:37 am
then the shoulder. dad took the third blow from the crowbar and then she stopped. the father tells us he had never met this woman before and was a stronger to him and his daughter. >> every parent's worst nightmare. a random violence upon their child right in front of them. >> reporter: the father demonstrates how the woman surrendered. she lay on the ground, just gave up waiting to be arrested, which she was. again, her first court appearance expected a few hours from now later today at noon. reporting live here in san jose, bob redell. >> so random, so bizarre. thank you. a judge, lawyers and other court officers are headed to the beach today to tour a controversial piece of land near half moon bay. a nonprofit i suing billionaire cosla after he or someone working for him cut off access to martins beach. now this week in court his property manager says it was his decision to do this, to block a

5:39 am
there and a few isolated 70s out there and very mild. you probably don't need a jacket this morning as you walk out your front door. as we head throughout the day today, you won't need that jacket and five to ten degrees cooler at the coast and that will still lead to temperatures in the upper 70s to low 80s even at the coast for today. but, hey, santa cruz yesterday hit 100 degrees. the first time we've ever seen so early on in the season and we've been keeping records for about 100 years. the fog returns to the coast this evening and the golden gate bridge will be socked in and a lot of people will be happy to see the natural ac kicking back in. low 90s for the south bay and along the peninsula and upper 70s to low 80s in san francisco and the east bay and we'll hit about 95 degrees in the east bay and tri-valley. much cooler as we get into the weekend. show you the numbers coming up in just a minute. right now, let's check your drive, here's mike inouye. >> seeing typical commute patte patterns. we'll show you what's going on
