>> i'm scott mcgrew. new this morning crews will soon remove a semi truck cab from inside a san francisco funeral home. the truck slammed into the building after the driver lost control. this happened early this morning on market street near sanchez street in the castro. "today in the bay" christie smith joins us from the funeral home where the driver and the passenger, christie, escaped all these flames. >> yeah, good morning to you, scott and peggy. that's the amazing part of this whole story. when you look at how this burned wreckage looks just sitting here, the cab is completely gone. i have an update for you eastbound lanes just reopened and westbound lanes may be a while because they're waiting for more crews to show up. firefighters saying, again, it is amazing that the people inside made it out on their own. we do have a picture that was posted on twitter this morning of this big rig on fire after it slammed into the building here on market street between

sanchez. the driver telling police that he lost control and firefighters say that the truck crossed the center median and police say he heard an explosion in the truck which is refrigerated for food. this happened around 12:30. the truck on fire, at least diesel fuel burning down market street and sullivan's funeral home caught fire, too, on the outside. there was actually a woman inside who thought it was just a street crash, but then looked outside and saw the fireball and then the owners came down to see, too. >> stuff happens and, as i say, it's property damage and luckily nobody, i guess, they're maybe hurt, but nobody is killed or anything like that. and, luckily, looks like it's fairly easy to fix. >> fortunate that very little fire went in the building. where the char marks are that's primarily stucco.

look 20 more feet to the right of that, that's wood p. if the vehicle would have landed 20 more feet than what it did, we would have had a much more intense fire going. >> now, the two people inside were taken to the hospital. again, with non-life threatening injuries. in fact, firefighters say they don't even know if they suffered any burns. what they tell us now, though, is that they're waiting for a hazmat truck to come because they have to drain about 150 gallons of diesel fuel from inside the truck before they move it. so, again, what we have is that the eastbound lanes are open, westbound lanes may take some time. but again, the owners of sullivans are saying they think this is cosmetic. they say that they have an appointment next week and they don't think that their business will be disrupted at all. reporting live in san francisco, christie smith, "today in the bay." >> good no one was hurt. christie, before you know go, you said one lane of market is closed two muni tracks going down the middle. i assume those are still open, as well? >> what we were saying is that

the eastbound lanes on the other side of market those are open and we've seen some traffic going through and they said they want to get those open for drivers and for muni but the westbound lanes closer to us where the truck is they say they mat ta they may take some time. >> okay, fair enough. christie smith, thank you much. 6:04 a developing story. thousands of people in southern california have no where to go today as numerous wildfires are keeping them from their homes, their schools, their jobs. today all schools in san diego and in more than 20 nearby cities will be shut down. this includes cal state san marcos. a graduation ceremony scheduled there this weekend at the university. thousands of people in several cities were evacuated, in some cases, just minutes before flames completely devoured their homes. right now nine fires have burned about 9,000 acres and destroyed 13 homes and 18-unit apartment complex, as well, was taken down. the biggest of the fires is burning on camp pendleton and
6:05 am
it's caused hundreds of marines to evacuate. crews will have to battle high temperatures and strong winds yet again today. now, take a look at this situation here, a perfect mixture of fire and wind created actually a small twister of flames being brought up into the sky. this video here was taken at the highway fire which is burning in the deer springs area. now, that fire right now is only about 5% contained. a very serious situation there. >> indeed. so serious firefighters from the bay area are on their way south to help put out those fires including several from alameda county. the department sent several strike teams to san diego county yesterday and one team from santa clara county left from couupertino overnight. santa clara county putting together more strike teams down south. not the case here, although we did have a very toasty day yesterday. let's take a look outside for you right now on this thursday morning giving you a nice, calm look at san jose looking nice and refreshing with that sunrise and let's take you now to san
