mayor michael bloomberg the chairman of the national september 11th memorial museum. i'm sure that was a moving experience for the first family and it has been for some of the other family members of the victims who died on september 11th and have seen it over the last 24 hours. >> it is absolutely heart wrenching. we have more in a moment. but first a big story in the west. >> 9,000 acres burned if san diego county. evacuation notices have been sent to many, many in carlsbad the city's school and attraction are closed today. joe. good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning, matt. we just learned this fire in carlsbad now 60% contained. 22 homes and condos have burned, including the house you see behind me here and this morning the fires continue to rage throughout southern california. the firefight raged into the night in san marcos. destructive flames lighting the

we do have red flag warnings all the way down to san diego. valley gusts 25 miles per hour. the mountain gusts about 30. this offshore winds continues, but, again, the good news is we are going to see at least a little less of a fire danger. for the next 24 hours, we have record temperatures. santa barbara 89, southern california fine in l.a. oceanside 94. san diego a temperature of about 91 degrees. so 24 hours more of these record-breaking temperatures. then things do start to cool down just a little bit. more importantly, relative humidity creeps up. >> thank you, al. now to the site of that tragic mining accident in turkey. more than 100 people are still trapped pence. the disaster is fueling violent anti-government protests across the country. richard engel has the latest for us. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. the rescue and recovery operation here has resumed after

closing for the night. rescue workers are trying to enter two chambers but will is still a fire burning pence this mine and there is little hope of finding any survivors. a funeral for twin brothers who work together and died together in this mine. just two of the many will be buried here today. in rows of graves dug up for the victims of the worst mining disaster. for more than 24 hours, no survivors have been pulled out of the mine, but desperate relatives are still waiting to hear what happened to their loved ones. "i have a grandson there," this woman said. "his wife is pregnant." the government's response has struck many in this country. the prime minister visited the country yesterday and said, "accidents happen." when he left, relatives of the missing miners heckled him and

survivors, first responders and families of victims at thor is.happening right now. it is important to remember this museum honors not only the victims of ground zero, also the lives lost at the pentagon and in shanksville, pennsylvania. >> it is massive, compriseing thousands of artifacts. national correspondent peteral zandter is down at the site. good morning to you. >> reporter: matt, good morning to you. a short time ago, we heard from a man named arthur gardner. his brother died at this site. he said this museum is intended to honor the dead also to inspoo irthe living as alice greenwald, the director, she described it not long ago. she says, this is museum without an ending. the experience for the witnesses world wide still 13 years after 9-11 the loss of so many lives. the president a short time ago

did have the opportunity to tour this site led by former mayor michael bloomberg himf he was there with his wife, first lady michelle obama and hillary clinton. they walked through a memorial hall. one of the messages says for the day shall erase you from the memory of time. this process has been 13 years in the making. the desire to build a location finally completed. this is a day many say is a promise fulfilled. matt, savannah. >> peter, thank you. we want to bring in nbc's tom brokaw who was there that morning along with matt, as you watched this horror in the central of manhattan and across the country as well. it is a delicate thing to speak to the horror of this event and the heroism. >> especially in new york, where everyone has an outspoken opinion. i take it as a tribute to the great city and the people involved. they not only did it. they did it magnificently.

i think it's an important physical reminder that this country was changed profoundly by what happened on 9-11. matt and i were there. at one point, i said, this will change us. i had no idea what that really meant. now all these years later, we had the longest war in our nation's history. >> those changes are big and little. huge in terms of geopolitics. . little if terms, you go to this murnlgs you go through a security checkpoint. they maid make the point, prior to 9-11, the intensity would have been much less. >> that's the point. my children are growing up everything is recorded on video cameras they have to go through some kind of security apparatus. they've adjusted to it. my hope is it will be dialed down at some point it goes beyond putting your toultries into a black bag. fsa came out of 9-11 the monitoring and controversy in

some of the injured huddled in the wreckage of the 78th floor. the fires were spreading. the air was filled with smoke. it was dark. they could barely see. it seemed as if there was no way out. and then there came a voice, clear, calm, saying, he had found the stairs. a young man in his 20s, strong emerged from the smoke and over his nose and his mouth we wore a red handkerchief. he called for fire extinguishers to fight back the flames. he 2e7ded to the wounded. -- tended to the wounded.

he led those survivors down the stairs to safety and carried a woman on his shoulders down 17 flights. then he went back, back up all those flights. then back down again, bringing more wuvend wounded to safety. until that moment when the tower fell. they didn't know his name. they didn't know where he came from. but they knew their lives had been saved by the man in the red b bandana. again, mayor bloomberg, distinguished guests, pair debellagio, governors christie and cuomo, the families and survivors of that day, to all

in that moment, allison knew, ever since he was a boy, her son had always carried a red hand kerr chief. her son wells was the man in the red bandana. wells was just 24 years old with a rough smile and a bright future. he worked in the south tower on the 104th floor. he had a big laugh, a joy of life, dreams of seeing the world. he worked in finance, but he had also been a volunteer fire fighter and after the planes hit, he put on that ban dan fa and spent his final moments saving others. three years ago this month, after our seals made sure that

justice was done, i came to ground zero and among the family here that day was allison crowder. and she told me about wells and his fearless spirit and she showed me a handkerchief like the one he wore that morning. today as we saw on our tour, one of his red handkerchiefs is on display in this museum and from this day forward, all those who come here will have a chance to know the sacrifice of a young man who like so many gave his life so others might live. those we lost, live on in us, in the families, who love them still. in the friends who remember them

. and a good thursday morning to you at 7:26, i'm peggy bunker. crews are picking up the pieces at a san francisco funeral home this morning after a big rig on fire slammed into the building. this happened about 12:30 amp. the driver of the truck said the refrigerated unit he was towing blew up, causing him to lose control of that semi truck and clipped the side of the building. the driver and a passenger were able to get out of that semi as it was on fire. both were rushed to the hospital with unknown injuries. the crash happened near market stre street and sanchez street. firefighters from the bay area are on their way to the south to help out with wildfires in san diego county. meanwhile, schools are canceled

let's start with an unusual document getting a lot of attention. foreign policy magazine discovered a 31 page unclassified paper that is being billed as the pentagon's plan for a zombie apocalypse. here is nbc's jim miklaszewski. >> reporter: afraid of the walking dead is th? don't worry, the pentagon has a plan. foreign policy magazine up covered a document called cono p-8888. a boring name for a remarkable paper, the you how-to guide for a zombie apocalypse. the stated purpose is to preserve nonzombie humans from the threats posed by a zombie hoard. >> i don't think they actually think there will be a zombie apocalypse. however, because the pentagon likes to plan for anything contingency, they do have a very detailed 31 page plan that outlines how they would respond should one occur.

it allows me to continue to drink my coffee and to eat healthier, and it was a real easy switch to make. we're back at 7:40 with the video that's lighting up the internet. it shows a young boy in bakersfield, california being attacked by a neighbor's dog. then an unexpected hero comes to the rescue his pet cat. we'll meet the family in a moment. but first a bit more on their story. take a look at this video captured by security cameras in a bakersfield, california neighborhoods. 4-year-old jeremy is riding his bicycle in the family driveway when the neighbor's dog runs around the parked car and attacks the boy. but then in a split second jeremy's pet cat the afternoon ra races to the rescue chasing off thing to and saving the boy.

jeremy's mother checks on her son, shocked by what she just witnessed. >> i never seen a dog just shake a child like that. so violently. and so i thought he had a hold of his pants. it wasn't until i got there and really saw that no, he had a hold of jeremy. >> reporter: after making sure the dog was long gone the cat returned to jeremy's side to check on him. jeremy had two deep cuts but after ten stitches he's feeling better and grateful for his fury hero. and the family is with us now. the cat, little jeremy who is resting comfortably this morning and his parents. good morning to all of you. >> good morning. >> jeremy looks good. how is he doing this morning. we saw pictures of those gashes. they look pretty painful. >> you know, he's just bouncing back from this.

he tells us it feels better. and he's just ready to get out there and run around and play with the other kids again. >> hopefully he'll be able to do that soon. let's go back to what happened yesterday. as i understand it, erica you were not far away. you didn't know this home surveillance video rolling. you heard your little boy scream. what happened next? >> honestly just a blur. i just remember hearing him and the next thing i know i see my cat flying out of nowhere on to this dog and just remember trying to get to my son and get the dog away and back in its yard away from both of us that it was trying to attack. and just save him, save all of us. >> it must have been incredibly traumatic. roger, as i understand it you checked the home surveillance tape. what did you think when you saw

tara the family cat three-point your son's rescue like that? >> it was a definite surprise. i didn't know what had happened so i didn't know any of the story. we rushed him to the hospital to get the stitches and get his wounds lookt at. i was trying piece back the story from the first responders that arrived and from what my wife told me before she left with jeremy. i'll check the tape and see if we got anything and see if it even caught what happened. and sure enough it was pretty amazing to see just a cat take on a dog and so selflessly put herself out there and not worry if she was going to get bit or injured herself and she just -- she really just -- i think that dog did not even know what hit him. >> exactly. score one for tara the cat. you've had this cat for about six years. have you ever seen this side of her personality?

does she have a lion complex? >> every once in a while she puts our dog back into her place but for the most part she's just the most mellow cat you've ever bet. all of our boys love her and take her on occasionally and she loves them right back anyway. >> very quickly, what about the dog. this is a dog that lived next door. i understand the dog is in quarantine. do you know what will happen to this dog? >> i was speaking with the animal control yesterday regarding the reports. it's looking like there's only two options unfortunately. the animal can be rehabilitated by the family possibly, but from what i understand that's a long and difficult procedure to get the dog back in their custody otherwise it will be put to sleep, unfortunately. >> i know everyone is so happy

mentioned but what are the long term effects of consuming pesticides? >> here's the issue. they can be toxic in larger amounts. when you look what's the exposure and when the epa looks at it it's for all ages especially children because they have the longest life span. it's based on toxic levels in animals and human effects that affects the nervous system. the issue is this. regulating the types of pesticides and the amount that can be consumed over a lifetime is important. so there's very low risk. having pesticide residue doesn't mean this will be damaging. that's why it's tightly regulated. >> this is confusing to some parents. you think you're doing the right thing. you want to feed your kids fruits and vegetables but yet there's some risks. >> the risk of not having fruits and vegetables is greater than the pesticide residue. careful washing or peeling may not be enough go organic because the same fda regulating

sit down, do it at a very calm time. it may help to do it in a restaurant where you're not likely to have a blow up. say look i've been hiding some things from you and i need to get this off my chest and i need your help. put it i need your help. >> talking to your children, i think about bill cosby when he says i'm rich you're not. that's the right approach basically saying it's my money. >> not necessarily. your kids, i like that scene too. your kids need to understand that money is a limited resource. that's the big message. we all have to make choice about what we need, what we want, and what can wait. and so that's the message you're trying to get across with your kids. if you don't know how to start the conversation ask them are you learning about money in school. because either way if they say yes, you say what are you learning. then you can continue the conversation. if they say no, can you say let's talk about saving today. let's talk about how much things are likely to cost in the

future. >> let's move on to one that's really tough because it's a bit of a role reversal over the course of life which is talk touring older parents about money. >> right. we know as people get into their 80s they lose cognitive function, being able to hand tell money often gets difficult. you want to try to have these conversations before you get there. you're trying to secure parents what do you want, and how i can help you get what you want in your life. that's going to include knowing where the important papers are, knowing what sort of assets are there and whether you're going to have to step in and help. i find it's helpful to put it in the framework of a friend of mine is going through this, talking to her parents and it made me think about what' going on in your life. it's a very sort of respectful low key way to start the conversation. >> great advice, jean. thanks so much. a lot to think about. we'll be right back. this is "today" on nbc.

control of the semi. it clipped the side of the building, as you can see if driver and passenger were able to get out of the semi as it was on fire. they were rushed to the hospital with nonlife-threatening injuries. that crash happened on market in the castro district. and firefighters from the bay area are on their way south to help out with several wildfires burning in san diego county. santa clara county and alameda county and also a fremont fire each sent crews overnight. meanwhile, schools in san diego were canceled for today as crews will once again see sky-high temperatures and very high winds. nine fires are burning in the county, scorching over 9,000 acres. 13 homes have been burned and an 18-unit apartment complex was also destroyed. we'll have a quick check of your local weather coming up here right after the break.
