we are covering breaking news this morning. san jose police at the scene of a deadly shooting. the city's 17th homicide of the year. it happened late last night on gridly street in san jose just a block away from an elementary school. "today in the bay" peggy bunker just got to the scene. peggy, what can you tell us? >> good morning to both of you. the last time we chatted with you at san jose's 16th homicide and now we're at the city's 17th homicide. you can see the police activity here. we did talk to one of the san jose sergeants who said they were here all night long processing the scene and some activity tape over here. we'll show you earlier that they had around this house where they were trying to get some questions answered, but right now they're saying they don't have a lot of answers to this question. who was this adult male that was shot last night. was taken to the hospital by an acquaintance and later died at the hospital. no suspects right now that they can give us more information about. they are still actively processing this situation.

they've been here, once again, all night long. homicide is now involved as they try to get to the bottom of this situation. lots of questions left to be answered. they're still looking for what went down. the bigger question for, the elementary school is just a couple block away. we drove right by it on our way here. many people waking up hearing about what happened overnight last night and wondering about their kids going to school. they have gotten in touch with the school and notes being sent out to the parents this morning in case they have concerns about that. but, still, many questions left to be answered here in the 600 block of gridley in east san jose. in san jose, i'm peggy bunker for "today in the bay." >> that was 17, let's go back to 16. prosecutors will likely file murder charges today against the man who was found at the scene of san jose's 16th homicide. that happened last night on a home in canyon ridge drive in east san jose. officers say the victim is a

woman who was stabbed to death by someone she knew. according to police, the suspect was actually one of the people who called 911. when officers arrived, he was still there and they immediately arrested him. the victim died later at a hospital and investigators working on a motive trying to figure out how the two knew each other but investigators believed the suspect lived at one point. >> any time somebody gets stabbed, there's blood. the person died. now it's the detectives' job to make sure there is justs for the victim. >> neighbors tell us they think a teenager also lives in the home but no indication that child was present during the deadly stabbing. in the east bay officers shot and killed a reportedly suicidal woman. it happened last night just north of the concord b.a.r.t. station. officer say when they got there the woman came out of the house pointing a gun at them. one officer fired at her and she

died at the scene. the 57-year-old woman has a history of mental illness. a developing story new wildfire at camp pendleton forcing new evacuation orders in san diego county this morning. the fire broke out yesterday and completely uncontrolled. still no word on what may have sparked it. this comes as crews are battling a much larger fire at another part of camp pendleton. more than 6,000 acres, about the size of daly city has scorched in that fire. meantime, police have arrested a pair of suspects who allegedly started two small fires in escondido. >> we have people in cust dae. we don't know what this is going to lead to in terms of other fires, but certainly, in this case, a fire that could have started off kit carson park immediately extinguished and we had the suspects in custody. >> firefighters battling nine wildfires. nine homes and several businesses have been destroyed. more than $20 million in

damages. this morning another defect on the new span of the bay bridge. this time around, it's not the bolts, it's the rods, which hold up the long cables that you see around you when you drive through. in fact, there's new concern those rods may not hold up in an earthquake. "today in the bay" christie smith joins us live with details on how cal trans will think about fixing this problem. good morning, christie. >> good morning to you, laura. well, the problem is that these rods that have slipped are now close to a sharp edge steel plate. all of this is going on below deck. but cal trans engineers believe in a big quake the rods could be pushed against the sharp edge damaging the main cable and maybe even threatening the more seismically safe bridge. that according to "the chronicle." what this discovered is the rods moved and no longer wiggle room that is needed between them and the holes that they go through. the latest issue for the $6.4

billion bridge in 2013, 32 high-strength rods failed and then it was roadway leaks that were discovered in the rain. why these rods, but cal trans is looking at a number of fixes, like possibly trying to recenter them in the first place but they're saying that the repairs when they get started could take until the end of the year to complete. reporting live, christie smith, "today in the bay." >> thanks a lot. let's check your forecast this morning as we give you a live look at san jose. good morning san jose. and the sunlight and the sunrise and check in with christina. good morning. >> good morning to you. what a gorgeous start to the day in san jose. we're getting the same painted sky over most of the bay area and here's the deal when it comes to that sunrise. whenever we get those clouds, that's what it takes to get the gorgeous colors. we're going to start to see the reds and the purples as we head through the next half hour.

we'll show you those as you can see we have cameras placed strategically throughout the bay area. not too mild and probably easier to get to sleep last night in san francisco and really mild with temperatures overnight only falling into the 60s. today we're only going to climb into the 80s. i think we might see a couple very low 90s in the warmest cities and just isolated 90s for today. onshore flow is strengthen and that's what's cooling us off. heat relief continues as we get into your saturday. breezy to windy at the immediate coast and keep that in mind, not fantastic beach weather, but if you want to get to the weebeach sunday is looking pretty good. warmest beach city will be santa cruz. santa cruz hit 100 degrees on wednesday. so, definitely cooling down out there. they'll be at about 75 degrees for today. down to about 72 by sunday. so, here's where we're headed over the course of the weekend. comfortable conditions for us. 77 degrees in the north bay by sunday and beautiful wine country if you want to do wine tasting this weekend and great

conditions for that and then next week we'll cool you off even more. i'll show you how that looks on your seven-day forecast. let's check your drive and say good morning to anthony slaughter. >> good news to report all across the bay, we don't have any major accidents, nonetheless any minor accidents. i want to give you speed time and travel times if you're headed out right now. in san jose, 101 moving without a problem and let's switch over to the maps and this is where we typically start to see the slowing and already starting to see that and it's not too bad right now. speed sensors up to 50 to 60 miles per hour and moving without a problem. in livermore coming through the altamont pass and starting to slow once you get over towards 84 and speed sensors still about 40 to 50 there. so, again, moving without a problem. let's take you outside and show you what it looks like on the camera. traveling without any problems here and good news considering this is one of our slow spots and also on 880 and oakland you can see 880 northbound moving

without a problem, but once you get to the bay bridge toll plaza, the lights have been on now for about 25 minutes and it is stop and go through this location. laura, back to you. >> hope nobody is on their phone talking or texting. a bill that would more than double the fee for getting caught texting or talking on your phone while driving. it's now headed to the state senate this morning. california assembly passed that bill yesterday. under the proposal of first-time violation would cost $50. right now penalty is $20. second offense would cost 100, as well as a point on your driver's license. a new bill that is changing the way kids throughout the state can practice football. the state assembly just passed a bill that would limit full contact practices for high school football teams. high school athletes would only be allowed to participate in two full-contact practices a week. the bill meant to crack down on concussions linked to youth sports. that bill now heads to the state senate. 6:09. still ahead, two firefighters

taking a live look here over the bay. ripples not choppy but the wind will increase as we head throughout the day today and that cool ocean air that has dropped your temperatures substantially this morning. the cool down continues and we'll show you your forecast in moments. anthony slaughter in for mike inouye. you can see friday light really living up to its name and no major accidents or minor accidents to report. as you get out on those roads, take it easy, both hands on those wheels. we'll be back with a full report. here are today's top stories. police looking for clues in an overnight shooting in east san jose. a man was shot on gridley street and later died at the hospital. detectives still looking for the shooter. causing nigerian's -- officials did not say if there were specific threats against the president or if he plans to reschedule. people in southern california hope for cooler,

calmer conditions that will give crews a break as they fight numerous wildfires in san diego county. new evacuations ordered overnight and the weather will improve today. the police arrested two teenagers who reportedly started two small fires in the san diego area. in the meantime, two firefighters are recovering this morning after this blaze. gutted a business complex in southern california last night. it happened in the city of san gabriel. authorities say cell phones fueled that blaze when a t-mobile store caught fire. at least three businesses were destroyed. people in the neighborhood were told to stay inside because of the bad air quality. investigators say that fire started in the back of one of those buildings. no word yet on the actual cause. several people in santa monica can still not go home after a transformer explosion severely damaged their apartment complex. last night around 10:45 a witness reported hearing a loud pop and fire fwauls before the whole building went up in flames.

the entire top floor was deemed inhabitable. one woman suffered smoke inhalation but we are not told her condition this morning. unclear what made that transformer blow. donald sterling will not pay an nba fine according to published reports sterling's attorney wrote a letter to the nba refusing to pay the $2.5 million fine. in the letter the attorney says sterling should not face any punishment at all. he missed the deadline for paying the fine which was earlier this week. the clippers owner was banned for life after racist comments were recorded in a phone call and made public. "new york times" pushing back against claims that the executive editor was fired over pay. sent a memo to staff saying jill abramson was not paid less because she was a woman. he says her pay is comparable to previous editors, executive editors. abramson was hired at the first female executive editor in

september of 2011. the white house giving a look at how much president obama and vice president biden are worth in terms of their assets. the assets of the president and first lady were $1.8 million and his memoir "dreams from my father" continues to make the most money for the president. somewhere between $100,000 in royalties. vice president joe biden $276,000 and his memoir "promises to keep" earn less than the $201 in royalties last year. >> the sales weren't as great as obama's. in just a couple hours barbara walters will host her talk show for the very last time. >> she'll say good-bye to fans of "the view" the show will be star studded with oprah winfrey, michael douglas and hillary clinton. walters will end her 50-year career on television though she will still work on behind the

scenes projects. let's check your forecast as we give you a live look at san rafael this morning. looks like it's going to be a gorgeous day. let's check in with christina. good morning. >> good morning. that's the one spot we're still going to see the 90s up in the north bay. but everywhere else, considerable cooling for today. we made it to the end of the week and bay to breakers looking really comfortable for this weekend. that's on sunday. keep that on mind if you plan on going to the city, maybe you forgot about it. take you outside and take you to san francisco and you can see the low clouds really setting up shop over the golden gate bridge and that's a good sign. what happens is those low clouds hug the california coastline. we get westerly flow and that ocean air is then transported all it way inland and look at your wind speeds this morning. you can see that's exactly what's happening for the past three days. those wind arrows were pointing from the land to the ocean at this point everywhere getting that ocean influence this morning and definitely feeling a

cooler start to the day as a result. now, we are going to end up pretty warm today, especially out in the north bay. 90 degrees for you and 87 on the east bay, comfortable conditions returning at 84 degrees and once we get into this cooling trend, we'll stick with it all the way through monday. steadily dropping those numbers. so, cool with coastal clouds this morning and heat relief temps drop off by five to ten degrees on average. by this evening more clouds and by tomorrow morning overcast sky and nice, sunny finish to the day and overcast sky will keep your temperatures in the 70s for your saturday right here in san jose. kind of a cool weekend shaping up in san francisco, but not too bad. you'll be at 67 degrees by sunday. monday into tuesday, the cooling continues and temperatures will be cool enough for a jacket. hard to believe. we had triple-digit heat just a couple days ago. but by monday, yeah, you're pulling out the coat and maybe the umbrella with a little drizzle monday morning. we'll keep you updated. right now, let's check your drive, anthony is in for mike.

>> who says california doesn't have real weather? we get it all. let's show you what is happening on the traffic maps. through livermore hit 84 and things do start to slow down and stop and go coming through sunol and they start to pick up as you head over towards fremont. the other thing to note here. the dublin altamont pass through dublin, this is where we were seeing some slowing and no accidents, just the typical slowing that you would see this time of day and also even on 880 northbound and southbound, things are starting to slow more considerably right at the 92 connector in hayward. as we take you outside and 880 in oakland and nor on the southbound side and things moving without a problem. we want to show you the bay bridge, though. metering lights on now for half an hour and stop and go, jam packed here and at least you have a beautiful sunrise to look at in your rear view and get over to palo alto and the peninsula. no problems to report of and great news on this friday, no minor accidents and no major accidents. friday light living up to its

and the wiki house has something explain. >> the wiki house is a project that started to help people design and create new types of homes but in an open-source community. so, you would design parts and share them with other people and then people would use that design, try it, maybe make it better. >> elaborate. >> elaborate on it. >> so you can just download this design. >> you can download this design and put them into a c.a.t. program and put all the parts together and get it printed. >> so, for people who don't know, that is just taking a computerized router and you take the wood and put it on the router and cuts these pieces together and it becomes like a jigsaw puzzle. >> that sounds a little bit like this. so you have those parts and you go into the other one and you have little pegs like this one that would just connect all the things. you put some over there and assemble the structure. >> i look at it. hardly any screws in here.

"today in the bay" melissa mollet is live in washington, d.c., this morning. she joins us with more. good morning, melissa. >> good morning, laura. nice it see you this morning. a top white house aide appointed by the president just two days ago is now overseeing the entire investigation. this as the secretary is facing tough questions. thiz job at this point on the line. the secretary, as you mentioned, testified at that senate hearing on thursday. for the fbi to take over this investigation lawmakers saying he ignored repeated warnings about problems with the system. so far the v.a.'s top investigatior says none of the 7 deaths he reviewed is linked to long waits for care but the v.a. also says they're not sure how many deaths they're supposed to be looking at. now, a preliminary report on all the deaths is pexpected in thre weeks and an extensive review, this entire investigation is supposed to be done by august. >> thank you very much, melissa.

let's check your forecast, it's 6:31. a live look at the bay from the island. whoever made that climb, we thank you for it because that is gorgeous. good morning, christina. >> hey, good morning to you. it really is lovely out there. and we have some changes coming to your forecast. we're fought going it get the crystal clear steling starts at the coast. we're talking about overcast sky as of tomorrow. what we have in store for you really nice day shaping up. cooling clouds returning to the coastline. temperatures are going to result at five to ten degrees cooler as those low clouds continue. to move on shore for today. if you want to open up the windows in your home and good to moderate air quality and that wind will get that data in your home nice and mixed. you don't have to worry about a stagnant air mass overhead and cool breeze coming in, as well. all our wind arrows pointing from land to the ocean and today is the reversal and, as a

result, all that ocean air transported all the way through your inland valleys and even getting a little bit of a delta breeze into the sacramento valley. 84 degrees for the south bay and 81 degrees along the peninsula today and 87 cooler day shaping up for you in the tri-valley and oakland today in the low 80s. and 83 in san francisco and 90 degrees not as hot today in the north bay by any means, but, still on the warm side. 90 is a hot day. cool with coastal clouds for this morning. as we get into this afternoon, temperatures will feel five to ten degrees cooler and then tonight those clouds thicken up and a gorgeous evening shaping up and then beautiful conditions as we get into this weekend. just want to give you a preview right now. saturday into sunday, temperatures falling into the low 70s. so, it's going to be nice, a couple more warm ones out there. overall that cooling trend kicks in and then next week, anthony looking comfortable. so, yeah, you give and take. we're giving off the heat and bring in the cool. back to you. >> it is looking really good. past few days without air

the victims because they sold similar scarves and purses. a man conviced for trying to throw thiz wife off the san mateo bridge. he will spend no more than seven years in prison. he was driving on the bridge when he got into a fight with his wife and he grabbed his wife and tried to throw her off the bridge. he ended up falling in the water instead and had it be rescued. the cal football player accused of attacking another student will be in court this afternoon. drew is charged with assaultlegl ier this month. according to a sworn affidavit, drew exchanged words with another student after another student's dog reportedly bit drew. drew kicked the dog. unclear how drew attacked the stunt student. drew has been indefinitely suspended from cal's football

welcome back, everyone. taking you live outside one of our many vistas, this of the transamerica pyramid. san francisco. should be a nice weekend on tap. we'll check in with christina coming up. a developing story in bangladesh after a ferry capsized during a storm. rescuers have found at least 22 bodies inside the ferry which sank in a river in central bang dudesh overnight. they ignored passengers' calls to stay close to shore as a storm started brewing. hard to tell how many people were on that boat because the ferry operators do not keep a passenger list. take a look at this torrential rain causing major flooding in parts of europe over the last few days. thousands were evacuated from their homes. authorities say at least tlooef people have died. the rain is expected to last through the weekend. right now rescue crews are working fast to reach more

minors who are still trapped in that underground coal mine in turkey. as many as 18 people could still be inside. he expects the final death toll to reach around 300. authorities say most of those deaths were caused by carbon monoxide. 787 people were underground at the time of tuesday's disaster. new this morning, a landslide victory in the world's largest election. india's opposition party has forced a long dominant party out of power. its prime minister candidate has won his race. full results expected later in the day. record turnout with more than two-thirds of india's eligible voters actually casting their ballots. 6:40 right now. coming up an update to breaking news. a deadly shooting on san jose streets. a new problem on the bay bridge that could make the span unsafe during a quake.

and we begip now with an update to breaking news for you. police in san jose are on the hunt this morning for a shooter responsible for the city's 17th homicide of the year. it happened on gridley street just a block away from an elementary school. "today in the bay" peggy bunker live at the scene.

peggy, what are investigators telling you? >> good morning, laura. right now police, homicide and investigators are trying to gather information like we are. many unanswered questions right now as they try to piece together what went down here on gridley street. we'll show you the scene right here. there was actually a crime scene clean-up crew that came by and took care of the area here on the street. crime scene tape here earlier and a huge police presence because there is a school nearby here. they wanted to make sure the crime scene was cleaned up before kids started walking to school. they got here last night after is 1:00 after an adult male was shot and taken to a nearby hospital by an acquaintance. he later died at that hospital. when we got here this morning the crime scene truck was just pulling away. police were winding up that tape around the streets here where the victims fell. we spoke to sergeant brian spears. he told us that while they are still looking for the shooter, they do believe the neighbor

he hood here is safe. >> we've been here, i'm fairly comfortable that the school and the neighborhood is safe. >> now, you know, that's a key point. mccallum elementary school right around the corner. police have notified their school liaison about the shooting and the school is taking it from there in terms of notifying the parents. back here earlier today we talked to you from the foothills of san jose when we were looking into the investigation of the san jose 16th homicide and then we got new information about this homicide. this makes it the 17th homicide for the city of san jose. boy, police here have been very, very busy overnight and been up all night longlicki looking int these two cases. also in san jose prosecutors will file murder charges today against the man that was found at the scene of san jose's 16th

homicide. officers say the victim is a woman who was stabbed to death by a man she knew. in fact, the suspect was one of two people who called 911 to report the death. investigators are working on a motive, trying to figure out how the two new each other. but investigators believe the suspect lives at the home at some point. investigators in walnut creek are looking for someone who has been intentionally sitting fires near homes. four fires have been set in the arbolado neighborhood in the past week as the bay area has been dealing with scorching triple-digit temperatures. the latest fire happened last night on a hill above arbolado park. while the fires have been fairly small, there is growing concern because of the dry conditions. investigators say a witness spotted a group of kids in the area of one of the fires. a developing story, some evacuation orders have been lifted in an area near the fire of several, the cause of several wildfires in san diego county.

a live look at the fire that is burning in san marcos this morning. this one has given firefighters an especially hard time and they had to issue 18,000 new evacuations notices overnight. but at least two neighborhoods have been allowed to return home. crews did make some progress overnight. the fire is about 10% contained. here's a look at some of the major fires burning in san diego county, including that one in san marcos. two fires on camp pendleton have burned a combined 6,500 acres and nine fires have destroyed at least eight houses and 18-unit apartment complex and two businesses since tuesday. last night crews found the charred body but they don't know the circumstances. so far surrounding that death. let's check your forecast this fine friday morning as we give you a live look at san jose and san francisco. so much going on in san francisco this weekend. got bay to breakers. how is it going to be? >> comfortable this year. last year it was hot. really hot out there. but this year, there's reason to

keep all your clothes on. more than the fact that it is the law now in san francisco, i'm just saying. 6:47 as we head into this weekend we're talking about mid-60s on sunday in the city by the bay, which we're taking a live look at right now. golden gate bridge shows people what they probably want to see at this point. that's the return of those low clouds. that's our natural ac. we don't usually have to pay for it in san francisco. we get it right off the pacific ocean and this morning, yeah, that natural ac is turning right back on for us. temperatures right now mostly in the 50s and running five to ten degrees cooler than 24 hours ago. so, that cooling is really starting to kick in. you can see all your arrows here pointing from the pacific into your inland valleys and that cool ocean air making its way to the south bay this morning and you can tell when you walk out your front door, it's brisk some some changes coming our way. 81 degrees and cool breeze for the peninsula and sun and clouds and 70 degrees and that's it for today.

in san francisco low 70s at best with low clouds thickening up and returning. warm finish in the north bay and that's the warmest city today of santa rosa, napa and warm out there and otherwise we're a touch cooler out in the tri-valley and even 87 degrees. this is what you can expect. cooling trend kicks frin today. really kicks in as we get into saturday and a weak disturbance comes through. what this disturbance will come through is bring in gusty wind at the immediate coast. not a great beach day for tomorrow but that wind will back off as we get into your sunday and we're back to the 60s and 70s. so, comfortable conditions will persist all the way throughout this weekend and next week as onshore flow strengthens. temperatures looking really good out in the east bay. 69 degrees in oakland for saturday and down to 67 degrees by sunday. so, overall, the heat relief we promised you really going to settle in as we get into the weekend. let's check your drive and see how you're doing. is it heating up out there? >> friday light really living up to its name this morning.

you can see 101 coming through san jose and no problems here. this is really one of the thoroughfares once you get past tully approaching 680, 280 and really start to bog down and this main thoroughfare continues to remain free of a accidents or any stop and go spots even throw palo alto 101 there. southbound still picking up with traffic and, again, friday tloith as i mentioned really living up to its name. 880 northbound approaching the maze and southbound, again, picking up, as well. right at 92, things are stop and go there. keep that in mind. show you what the bay bridge approach looks look right now at the maze and it is stop and go all the way coming in from 80 and even as you just saw coming from 880 both directions really jam packed here. guys, back to you. >> all right, anthony. thank you. another defect on the new span of the bay bridge. this time around, it's not

bolts, it's rods. hold up the long cables arou s you as you drive through. christie, new concern this morning. those rods may not hold up in an earthquake. >> good morning to you, scott. that's exactly right. the concern is that these rods have now moved very close to sharp and steel plates that are basically below the deck there. cal trans is concerned what could happen if these rods suddenly move in a quake. that it could possibly damage the eastern span's main cable or even undermine the stability of the bridge. that according to "the chronicle" this morning. the issue came up during an inspection. the rods run through holes and now there apparently isn't just enough space left. cal trans isn't sure why these rods moved out of place, but this isn't the first issue to come up. certainly last year 32 high-strength rods failed then. it was discovered that there are

leaks when it rains. crews are looking at a number o possible fixes, including trying to center up these fasteners or even make the openings wider, but they're saying whichever one they choose, it would probably take until the end of the year to complete. reporting live, christie smith, "today in the bay." >> okay, christie, thank you. starting tomorrow sfo will shut down two of its four runways for the summer. the errant hairport has to shute runways to finish a mandated safety project. the airport is building construction zones. those are the northeast facing runways that handle most of the airport's departures. the work will cut the number of flights that could arrive during peak hours and send all southern california bound flights over san bruno and daly city. in fact, this summer those cities could see as many as 10 to 12 additional planes flying overhead during peak times in the morning and evening.

hawaiian airlines will resume nonstop service today. the airline says demand has been so strong, it's decided to reinstate the flight. right now the airline has nonstop service from san jose to maui. it will also change service in oakland next month adding a bigger plane so more passengers can catch the nonstop flight each and every day. 6:53. two south bay light rail stations were supposed to shut down today for construction, but now that work is being rescheduled. the nine-day closure will now take place in sunnyvale starting may 30th. both reamwood and vienna stations and riders should allow an extra 15 minutes to their travel time. preparing for the b.a.r.t. extension and games at levi stadium should be ready for the first preseason football game by this august. scientists, inventors, engineers across the bay area are putting the finishing touches on things they made just in time for this year's maker fair.
