sea breeze which is reaching solano county and inland towards the tri-valley this morning with areas of low clouds for the morning. as we head towards the afternoon patches of low clouds near the coast and high clouds coming in. temperatures today in the 60s and 70s. and those onshore winds will be picking up as we approach the evening. now the source of the two types of clouds we got the fog on the coast, also some high clouds dropping in from north to south. we'll see that during the day today. so our temperatures outside this morning, you may still need a jacket through about 10:00 or so. we have upper 40s and low 50s outside and as we head into the afternoon, highs in the upper 70s in san jose, east bay temperatures upper 70s to near 80 before things turn cooler as we finish off the weekend, plus a slight chance of showers showing up in your seven-day forecast. a closer look coming up in a few minutes. >> thanks, rob. this morning, fire crews are standing by in the santa cruz mountains watching for any flare-ups after this brush fire burned west of gilroy and morgan hill. the fire is now fully contained and it wasn't big, just about five acres, near mount madonna,

but given the extreme fire danger in the bay area and the wildfires burning in southern california it certainly was unnerving. it started before 4:00 yesterday afternoon off summit road along the border of santa cruz and santa clara counties. it's a remote, rugged area, far from homes but there was a greenhouse type of treasure that caught fire. -- structure that caught fire. no word on the juice spehe caus. crews in san diego county are making progress this morning as thousands of firefighters man the front lines, several people are now charged with arson. a 57-year-old man is charged in connection with one of the smaller fires and two teenagers are also facing arson charges related to other fires. firefighters also found one burned body in a homeless encampment. more than ten wildfires erupted in southern california this week alo alone. bay area firefighters joined the firefighters from all over the state in that fire fight and

a santa clara county strike team e-mailed these photos to us showing the work that they have ahead of them. they have 26 firefighters on the ground. they worked on the fire in san marcos and the poinsettia fire in carlsbad. wildfires are not only burning in san diego and the bay area, the central valley getting hit. this is modesto where five homes were destroyed and three others were damaged. this wildfire burned friday in a grassy area then quickly spread to a neighborhood. the cause of the fire is unknown, but we do know that heavy winds may have fueled the flames. back here in the bay area, a family is still desperate for answers one month after an apartment fire killed a 3-year-old san francisco boy and his mother. family and friends gathered for a vigil on brookdale avenue in front of that apartment where 3-year-old santana williams and his mother esther loane died in a fire on april 16th. a report released last week says the fire started in the living room of their two story

apartment. mother and son were found in the bathroom on the second floor. the report also said that smoke detectors were not working in that home and crews could not find a fire extinguisher. >> i just want answers. like i'm definitely not here to point fingers. my son, i mean, man, his smile speaks for had itself. so much life. he didn't get to go to kindergarten. he ain't got to start his life yet. you know, this could have been prevented. >> we've asked for the last time they maintain these units. the last time they inspected them, the last time that they had any type of trouble. nbc bay area reached out to the fire department and the san francisco housing authority and a spokesperson from each department told us that they cannot comment on the fire because the investigation is not yet complete. to oakland now where police are looking for the gunman who shot a young child and a man in his 40s or 50s. it happened around 6:30 last

night on 66th avenue off international boulevard. both victims are now in the hospital. their conditions have not been released. police say they have no suspects nor motive at this time. a 25-year-old husband and father is now san jose's 17th homicide victim of the year. officers were called out to gridley street in east san jose on thursday night. callers told police someone had been shot but before police arrived, family members took that victim, jimmy copas, to the hospital and that's where he died. >> was a very helpful person, good man, good father, good son. i'm going to miss him very much. son, i love you. my only son. i love him very much. he was a good man. that's all i got to tell you. >> family members say that copas was coming home from the gas station when he was shot. police have not identified any suspects at this point and they're not saying whether the shooting is considered gang

related but the mayor's gang task force -- the director of the mayor's gang prevention task force says that city is about to start its safe summer initiative providing recreational programs and other options to keep kids off the streets. expect delays all summer long. construction at the bay area's busiest airport is expected to throw quite a monkey wrench into the summer travel season. sfo is expected to close two of its four runways in order to make federally mandated safety improvements. all arriving and departing flights will share the same two runways. an airport spokesperson tells us that departing travelers will feel the biggest impact as planes taking off will have to wait longer. >> i am flying june 4th to hawaii, so i guess maybe there will be a delay. we are going to sit on the runway and say our prayer, night. >> it's pretty tedious. everyone like dreads it. >> as you book your flight out of sfo you will have fewer

choices because airlines have voluntarily cut back on the number of flights in an effort to minimize delays. and even if you're not traveling, you may still feel the impact. takeoff patterns will change, putting more planes over south san francisco, san bruno and pacifica. residents got letters in the mail explaining the shift and noise that will come along with it. airport security may be getting more high tech. fallout from that teen stowaway in san jose. east bay representative eric sewwell pointed out the thousands of acres each bay area airport has to secure. he said fencing like this could never be the answer. existing technology made in southern california could improve it. it's equipped with a microphone and sensors compared to a spider web. >> tellsnot somebody is cutting the fence or climbing the fence or digging under the fence or for that matter, shooting over the fence such as you had in california last year, people shooting at

good morning. looking live at sunol in the distance. not really any clouds to speak of. in san francisco, a little different story. we see some clouds and certainly some cooler temperatures as well. this is the photo that sparked a controversial move by sacred heart in san francisco. the school did not like that jessica urbina wore a tux for her senior portrait so it pulled the photo from the yearbook and that's when students heard about that move and showed up to school wearing ties to show their support for their classmate. >> honestly, i've cried multiple times overwhelmed with the support. i want to thank everybody who is supporting me now. >> the school says only boys are allowed to wear the tuxedo but in statement released yesterday afternoon the school says, quote, these events have sparked a campus-wide dialog which will result in a revision of policy. a reality tv show about michael sam is now on hold. the oprah winfrey network announced it will postpone the production after the rams'

rookie faced criticism this week. sam became the nfl's first openly gay draft pick last saturday. during a news conference sam said he wanted to focus on making the team and eliminate any distractions. after own announced the documentary project, people wanted to know if he wanted to be a pro football player or a tv star. his agent released a statement saying his client and the team felt it was better to delay that project. if you find a container like this, make sure you stand back and call in the authorities. silicon valley soil engineering told police the container has radioactive material in it and it was stolen from the back of a company pick-up in san jose yesterday morning. that material could pose a health risk to the person who is directly exposed to it or who tampers with it. if you see it, you should leave it alone and call police. car burglaries are unfortunately very common, but sometimes it's what's stolen from a vehicle that is really the bummer. 94-year-old betty leery's hands are bare for the first time in

74 years. that's how long she's been wearing her wedding rings. she only took them off while she was hospitalized and her son put them in her wallet and tucked it too a laptop case while at a san jose restaurant. even though he carefully parked under a light didn't stop a burglar who smashed the rear window. >> expected, of course, to get a laptop. that's what they thought they were getting. but all they got was a bunch of papers that would mean nothing to them but meant a lot to my son and then he just happened to have my wallet. first time he's ever had my rings. >> what a terrible coincidence. the family is devastated. they're passing out flyers hoping to get the rings back no questions asked. betty's father was a jeweler and he made those rings himself. they were taken three days before betty's 74th wedding anniversary. still ahead on "today in the bay," palo alto hits the big screen and the hollywood

lrs are all right. it's breezy when folks are out flying kites. this one sadly got cut. isn't that cinderella up there, i think? to palo alto now, we're going to talk about james franco's new movie in a few minutes. first, a dose of hollywood on the peninsula. it is a coming of age movie and many say the story could be about any u.s. town though this one is about palo alto. and that's what has some people upset about the movie. "today in the bay's" kimberly tere has reaction. >> reporter: for many this is palo alto, a city along the peninsula known for its high-tech prodigy, a bustling downtown and stanford.

but for gia this is palo alto. >> don't know why you do things. >> reporter: the 27-year-old made her debut with the film she wrote and directed based on james franco's book, "palo alto a collection of dark and racy short stories about troubled de teenagers. why palo alto? franco grew up there. >> it's short stories he wrote. i assume that's his impression because he lived here in palo alto and went to school here. >> reporter: franco worked with coppola to develop the movie. those who saw it say it's not an accurate reflection of its namesake. >> if i lived in palo alto i would be incensed that they named my city after this movie. >> i liked it. but the name -- don't just like put a blanket label. i think it could be anywhere. anywhere usa. >> i think the movie expressed a part of palo alto but it certainly didn't express the whole story. it seemed to focus on one

segment of the kids' population. >> reporter: moviegoers say the film doesn't back down in tackling tough issues like teen suicide, sex, drugs and pedophilia. >> seems like it was very real. and it was sort of uncomfortable to watch. >> reporter: coppola was in san francisco to speak to moviegoers herself. >> i hope that, you know, people can connect with their emotions and -- especially teenagers and can relate to some of the stories that are being told. >> reporter: kimberly tere, "today in the bay..." >> say what you want about the movie. the weather in palo alto will be nice today. rob mayeda's look at the forecast. >> the weather will be quite nice around the bay area and continuing the cooling trend that kicked in for inland spots yesterday and so far this morning. mostly 50s outside, though, a few upper 40s closer to the north bay. the view from emeryville towards

san francisco shows you the hazy skies, close to 56 degrees right now and into san francisco, nice view, just outside at&t park for you this morning. we have 58 degrees and temperatures should not be running much warmer than that as we head towards game time, coming up just after 6:00, should see low 60s, patches of low clouds and turning breezy. breezy all day long in san francisco which will keep our temperatures down into the 60s closer to the peninsula. areas of low clouds this morning as we lead into the afternoon, we'll also see high clouds passipass ing by from north to south. the onshore winds will pick up as you approach the evening. sunset arriving later each day, 8:15, as we head towards the evening. the wind speeds around the bay area onshore reaching antioch, fairfield into livermore and an early start for the sea breeze. the marin layer deepening above 1,000 feet thick so as the winds continue to come off the ocean during the day it's going to supply that ocean air conditioning we've come to

appreciate here over the last couple days. the source of the high clouds will see a system here dropping out of the north is going to come closer to the bay area. today just tossing some high clouds but what will be interesting to watch the weather that will be coming up late tomorrow for the mountain areas. today partly cloudy skies, tomorrow you start to see a few showers heading towards the sierra, possibly by tomorrow evening and areas around lake county might see a slight chance of a shower. the rest of the bay area will have a brief chance of seeing showers as we head into monday night and tuesday. as we watch the system from the north it will bring in cooling as we head through tuesday and most of the energy dropping down over the sierra. there will be a slight chance perhaps on tuesday, mainly in the hills of the north bay, and now towards the sierra of seeing showers. in the second half of the week, high pressure building in once again, at least strongly enough to get us back into the mid to upper 80s inland, but at this point, by next thursday and friday, it doesn't look like we'll see temperatures climbing as hot as the heat spell we got out of. temperatures for the second half

of your seven-day forecast there you should see climbing into the 80s again. cooling through the weekend and turning warmer again as we head towards the second half of next week. 77 degrees in san jose, 82 in saratoga. should be the warmer of the two weekend days around the peninsula. we'll see highs in the low 70s. 74 degrees in palo alto. san francisco mid to upper 60s. but we should see temperatures turning kind of chilly as we head towards the evening as the sea breeze continues to strengthen. you'll want the jacket as you're heading to san francisco even through the afternoon. north bay, fremont 75, tri-valley around sunol and pleasanton, low 80s possible today but the temperatures towards danville and dublin should be in the upper 70s and 79 degrees in livermore and then the trend will be at least five degrees cooler tomorrow, kris, if you like the cool temperatures, good news in the seven-day forecast. boy the allergies getting kicked up by the breezy conditions we'll be seeing at times this weekend. back to you. >> so i don't get to whine about

from nbc bay area, this is "today in the bay." >> good saturday morning. and a good look at the golden gate bridge. it's not shrouded in fog today, folks. looking live in dublin as well, we see emerald glen park looking lovely on this saturday. thanks so much for joining us. i'm kris sanchez along with meteorologist rob mayeda who has a very good looking forecast for today. >> yeah. comfortably cool for a change. we're getting that free ocean air conditioning this morning. winds onshore. temperatures mostly in the 60s near the coast and some 70s inland around the valley, heading into the evening we'll see the winds picking up a bit.

i think they'll get up close to 25 miles per hour time. a bit breezy into the evening and we'll also see high clouds at times drifting from north to south during the day. nothing that's going to bring us showers today, but you'll get two layers of clouds, the patchy low clouds and during the day some of the high clouds too. the all day sea breeze, temperatures in the 50s, should finish the day mostly in the 70s inland, though cooler 60s closer to san francisco and the trend will be even cooler as we wrap up the end of the weekend. full look at those changes in your forecast in few minutes. >> thanks, rob. the fire in the santa cruz mountains is now contained but firefighters remain on standby near mount madonna west of gilroy and morgan hill looking for flairups. it was small, about five acres, but a big reminder of the extreme fire danger looming in the bay area. it started before 4:00 yesterday afternoon off summit road along the border of santa cruz and santa clara counties. it is a remote area far from homes but there was a greenhouse

type of structure that caught fire. no one was injured and no word yet on the cause. there is word on the cause for several fires set on a hillside in novato. police added extra patrols to the crossroads neighborhood where many of the fires happened within minutes of each other yesterday and now officials are saying it appears they were set on purpose. the fires burned grass and brush, but thankfully never got very large. crews were able to quickly collect evidence and fire officials say the brazenness of the crimes is stunning. and turning now to a developing story in southern california where the wildfires there have charred more than 31 square miles leaving homes and businesses destroyed in their wake. authorities are looking into the cause of each of the nearly dozen fires in san diego county and already one man is charged with setting them on purpose and police are questioning two teenagers in a separate incident. jennifer borkland has the latest from escondido.

>> reporter: firefighters race against the wind carrying embers hop scotching between tree tops and up in swirling columns the people here in san diego county are calling firenados. >> fire was going down the mountains. >> reporter: neighbors hoping the shower of sparks coming down won't overtake their homes. one today exploded with propane tanks going off like rockets. >> black columns of smoke just took off like crazy. >> reporter: and with it, more homes lost in san more kose to the advancing flames of the fire. in the city of carlsbad seven homes destroyed plus a complex that housed 18 condos. bob thought his place was next, but firefighters won that battle. >> they didn't stop the fire here. it easily went into these houses and we would have lost this whole neighborhood. >> reporter: so many neighborhoods are still at risk. >> this is just the beginning from what could become a very dangerous fire season, the worst

fire season that we have seen in a long, long time. >> reporter: a dousing from above, as crews dig lines under, it's a struggle, fruitless, until the weather offers some relief. while the winds kicked up an additional 13,000 evacuation orders in the san marcos fire area late in the afternoon, we also learned that all the orders in carlsbad were lifted. everyone here is free to come home. in carlsbad, california, jennifer borkland, nbc news. he was hiding in plain sight. authority says the former cal fire chief accused of killing his girlfriend never ventured far from his home after the may 1st killing. police arrested orville fleming outside san francisco as he was boarding a public bus. authorities say he had been hiding in dense vegetation in the area for the past 16 days, but came out to go shopping. he disappeared after the body of his girlfriend was found inside their home in sacramento.

answer and now not just pets are getting sick, people are getting sick too. pet jerky treats mostly imported from china are linked to more than 1,000 dog deaths, more than 5,000 other dog owners complained that pets got sick and for the first time three people claim the meat made them sick, including two toddlers who ate them accidentally. but the fda cannot identify a specific problem with those treats. gm gets hit with the maximum fine over its failure to issue a recall, but some people are outraged that the $35 million is not 1% of the automakers annual profits for last year. the automaker admits its ignition switches were flawed on more than 2 million gm cars and trucks but did not issue a recall. that flaw can cause the engine to shut down which then shuts off the power steering and eventually keeps the air bags from deploying.

it's led to 32 crashes and deaths. victim families are stunned gm kept silent for so long. >> i am extremely angry, furious, i mean i just don't understand their way of thinking. >> since at least november of 2009 gm has had information linking ignition switch problems with air bags failing to deploy. they have that information and they told no one. >> gm's ceo says the company has learned a lot and is focusing on becoming an industry leader in safety. a bay area chemist accidentally discovered a new form of plastic which is stronger and recycleble. the research facility, says she stumbled on that discovery and her new type of plastic is not just stronger but can be more easily recycled and they're just trying to figure out which new ways they can use it in. >> definitely proud of, you know, my work, proud of the paper, and really excited for,

the bay." >> good morning to you. the a's are on the road but we still look at their home turf this morning. looking live at at&t park which is nice and cool this morning but hot last night. the giants have been on a roll winning 16 of last 21 games and look to continue that hot streak against the marlins in a game you saw right here on nbc bay area. it was metallica night at at&t park. now to bottom of the sixth, giants down 1, blanco looked to provide heavy metal of his own, singling to right to tie the game. the marlins would spoil the party with two runs in the ninth and miami beat the giants 7-5. the a's kicking off their nine-game road trip in cleveland against the indians and did it with authority. second inning, josh redik steps up to the plate with bases loaded an the game tied at one. he unties it with the grand slam and then later in the same inning, josh donaldson hits a three-run shot to left. the a's tee off on the indians for eight runs in the second,

view of the bay and 55 in san jose, upper 40s around the north bay where we're seeing high clouds coming in and closer look just outside around at&t park, there in san francisco, you can see a few down the coke bottle, 58 degrees, with low clouds, not much sun right now in san francisco. in fact, the game time forecast does look pretty similar there out by san francisco. we're going to see 62 degrees first pitctch coming up after 6:00. sweatshirt weather at the ballpark and the winds gusty between 6:00 and:00 in the evening and then we'll see those winds back off approaching 9:00 and later on tonight. so today's weather you got the onshore winds not just for places like san francisco but even into livermore and fairfield and we'll see those areas of low clouds breaking up except they'll linger near the coast and see patches of low clouds west of the golden gate heading into the afternoon. coastal temperatures in the 60s, valleys in the 70s. the change from wednesday and thursday when we had the inland highs close to 100. the sea breeze is cooling things off.

into the weekend, may be too much of a sea breeze today. notice around the peninsula and out to the coast we'll see the wind speeds up about 15 to 25 miles per hour, occasional gusts that could get close to 40 around sfo later today. we will be watching those breezy conditions closely and we see the winds when they are reporting onshore that's one half of the cool down. the winds coming in off the ocean. we also have a marin layer that went from about 750 feet thick yesterday now almost up to 2,000 feet. now that slice of cooler air has no trouble spilling over the coastal hilltops and will ensure our inland locations as the wind speeds pick up will stay comfortable. weather pattern turning interesting. the spin of the clouds off the coast of the pacific northwest. showers today, north of eureka but eventually this system will drop towards northern california for early next week. right now the outer fringe, tossing high clouds and things should be dry to the high country for today.

today partly cloudy skies and as the system starts to drop closer, near lake county and the sierra could see a few showers late tomorrow. plan on that if your sunday plans include the sierra you could see a few showers and then as the low forms briefly into a cutoff low over northern california on tuesday, that could bring us a slight chance of showers. again given it's moving inland off to the east the best chance in the hilltops to the north of santa rosa and toward the sierra for tuesday. second half of the week. high pressure builds in and we'll see our temperatures climbing up. you can see the trend in the seven-day forecast starting thursday on into friday approaching memorial day weekend for next week. see the temperatures around san jose in the upper 70s, close to 82 in saratoga but quite a bit cooler in san francisco, mid 60s in the forecast today around the north bay. we'll see highs in the 70s and the tri-valley, some of the warmer spots, close to 80 in pleasanton, 70s around livermore and danville. >> thank you very much, rob. we are supposed to be conserving water, some of us by as much as

santa clara's board asked the public at large to cut their water usage by 20%. that had some folks stirred up, claiming residents have to shorten their showers and cut back on wearsing their lawns while businesses don't have to do anything. it turns out that's just not true. as californians jockey over a water supply drained by a multiyear drought, accusations surfaced that not everybody is shelling out the same. that businesses play by one set of rules while residents scrape by on another. in a recent op-ed to the san jose mercury news titled "businesses need to cut their water use too" one woman asserts, quote, we all applaud each other for our conservation and look for new ways to save. it is time to make the businesses accountable too. is this true? >> are people playing by different rules? do businesses have to abide by different standards of everyday residents or everybody on the same plane? >> everyone is on the same plane, our call is county wide, businesses, residents,

everybody, hoping to save 20%. >> reporter: that's the man who manages water convervation. his board makes recommendations for cutbacks and it's up to the individual retailers to figure out how they're applied. the san jose water company says it's asking people and businesses to shrink their usage by a fifth but neither faces penalties for breaking the rules. while it is true water dependent industries like golf courses are exempt from those rules, about one out of three courses in santa clara is using recycle water and the notion businesses are standing. >> sustainability is a huge part of fairmont resorts. >> reporter: not at the hotel which is replacing 600 decades old toy lets and taking advantage of rebate money to do it, shoring up more than just their bottom line. >> we did projections and we're expecting in the 10,000 per year, but for us it's much more impact the impact we're making

on the water situation in california. >> reporter: it tell us it used to go through 3.6 million gallons of water a year from toilets. you can flush that number away and replace it with 1.3 million gallons now. businesses like this coupertino ice rink are reaping the rewards. ebay has applied to use the money for landscape conversion. this business park has done it. the water district says the program is popular. >> some of the programs, the business response is i think tripled or 300% increase compared to last year. our phones are ringing off the hook right now. >> are all of these measures working to cut our water usage? we'll find out in about a week when the water district releases the numbers for february and march. then they'll adjust their recommendations accordingly. recommendations that go for everybody. pretty much without exception. i'm sam brock, that's today's reality check. back to you. >> just in to our newsroom, former golden state warriors head coach mark jackson has a
