well, happy monday morning to you. it's 4:30 in the morning, i'm scott mcgrew. >> i'm laura garcia-cannon. let's first say good monday morning to christina. >> good morning to you scott, laura, everybody at home. kicking off the workweek with pretty comfortable temperatures out there. mostly mid to upper 50s and interesting changes coming your way including some thunderstorms. brought in that forecast in just a minute and right now check your drive back to work monday. >> we have to warn folks. we have some wind out there and that makes the view of our bay bridge so clear. the san mateo bridge.

the wind advisory issue for the bay bridge, i should specify. not a weather advisory service. chp and the sign on the right high winds on the span and you see the easy flow and the clear view. the dumbarton bridge that chp also warns about. no issues as far as the flow of traffic and just a little slowing and overnight road crews in some spots and 680 and san ramon and watches the sensors clear a bit and those sensors may be reading that slow down as they do that activity. check for the updates from chp and i'll bring you an update in a second. back to you guise. california is bracing for its worst fire season yet. the governor appeared yesterday and said climate change is a huge factor. right now the state has 5,000

firefighters and $600 million to battle the blazes, but it may not be enough. there have been more than 1,500 wildfires since the start of the year and that's double the average. >> it's not really as green as you think it is. i watt out in the hills and the grass is dry and the fuel moisture there is ready to burn, down around 9%. so, the grasses right now, even with the higher humidity are ready to burn, as far as what we're seeing. right now we're in the thick of it and this is the only middle part of may. >> working with cal fire and other agencies to make sure they're ready for what looks like a very busy summer. state fire officials say there are several things you can do to protect yourself heading into fire season. first, create defensive space around your home. clear dead brush and vegetation away from your house. make a wildfire action plan

similar for your family and, third, be ready to leave as soon as firefighters issue an evacuation order. meantime, helicopters are dumping huge buckets of fires burning in the woods north of lake tahoe. in nevada, close to the california border. so far it's burned 1 550 acres. that means crews are relying on helicopters and hand crews to keep the fire from spreading. working to put out the flames where they can and it is only 5% contained. the worst is over in southern california, almost, after almost a week of destructive wirefers in san diego koundy. hundreds of people returned home after the fire evacuation orders were lifted. all but three fires are completely contained this morning. a dozen fires destroyed at least 47 homes and despite cooler temperatures and calmer winds

and a small brush fire popped up this weekend outside of san diego. proof that california is still right for more action. we are waiting to learn the identity of a hiker who was found dead after falling from a large rock in the berkeley hills. the apparent accident happened on uc berkeley property on gr griszzly park drive. investigators say it appears the victim had climbed a large rock and fell about 100 feet to his death. >> nothing appeared suspicious at this time, but because it is an unattended death we had to have crime scene come up and process the scene. >> in 2012 another young man fell from falling from that very same rock. police hope witnesses will help track down the person who shot a bicyclist in san jose. the drive-by shooting happened yesterday afternoon. the victim was taken to the hospital with minor injuries. witnesses say the gunman fired out of a late 1990s maroon

honda. a mother facing charges accused of attacking a boy she said was aabullying her daughter. 30-year-old garcia in santa rosa during lunch on friday. she didn't check in and told her daughter to point out the boy who had been bullying her. then they say garcia bracher grabbed the 11-year-old boy at the throat and threatened him in front of other children. deputies arrested her and looking into the bullying allegations. one of the 18 state san jose advisors fired last month from the university say he and his co-workers were the victims of a witch-hunt. the university was embarrassed over the recent alleged hate crime incident and eager to show the new task force it was not afraid to punish resident advisors. ras were unfairly targeted and

when school officials got an anonymous tip about underage drinking in one of the dorms they were quick to fire 18 ras. the firings were unrelated to the hate crime. 4:36. happening today, most san jose city council members will attend a forum to talk about more than 100 senior citizens that are about to be evicted from their mobile home park. the mobile home park sits in a desirable piece of land in west san jose. the park's owners want to sell. many senior citizens w s live t say they will not leave without a fight. let's check our microclimate forecast. major changes, including the possibility of thunderstorms are on the way. let's check in with christina this morning. good morning. >> good morning to you, scott,

laura, everybody at home. we only see this opportunity a handful of times each year here in the bay area. talking about thunderstorms as of this afternoon, isolated at best for today and scattered storms in the forecast for tomorrow. this morning a nice, brisk breeze and temperatures in the mid-50s to kick off the workweek. as we head throughout the day today, that cool ocean breeze will stay in place and really nice temperature wise out there. 71 degrees for the south bay and 71 straight up along the peninsula and 74 degrees out in the north bay today. i'll tell you all about the thunderstorms coming up in my next report and right now welcome back mike inouye and check out our monday drive. >> looking out here westbound through 580 towards dublin and well past el charra and further back on 580 you know they have the wind farms and the wind advisory from chp extends this morning for gusty conditions across those hills, keep that in mind, it happened overnight and they still haven't cleared that.

this live shot is where the arrow is approaching the dublin interchange. little slowing at the cluster where things move around and not a big deal for dublin. farther north, the slow lane reported blocked. north 280 there that was blocking two lanes and still blocking the slow lane by the activity and may be why we're seeing the slowing on the approach and coming through the construction zone on san ramon. slow for caution sake, of course. it is as you approach 101, though, reports of a stalled prius in lanes. be careful there. sounds like it's still blocking one lane and only a couple there at that point. a smooth drive south and watch the rest of the peninsula, again, wind advisories for the bay bridge and the san mateo bridge and the carquinez bridge because they did get caught with gusts in the overnight hours.

welcome back, everyone and a very good monday morning to you. taking a live look outside and a beautiful vista of the bay bridge. it's 4:42. a new warning from health officials saying the deadly virus mers the concern comes after a person in illinois contacted mers during a stateside business meeting. a brief hand shake from an infected man fromi indiana and the illinois man. the illinois man only showed symptoms such as a mild cold. he's no longer sick. the man who had been in the middle east spent several weeks in the hospital, but is better

now. the cases are raising some new questions about how that virus is transmitted. >> we have to be very careful about giving people this false sense of security. but right now we also have to state that the problem is largely limited to the middle east. >> the virus started in saudi arabia two years ago. no vaccine and cure and only symptoms can be treated. the virus spread to 15 countries sickening about 600 people in all. a third of them have died. the former executive editor of "new york times" who was fired last week will deliver the commencement address in the university of north carolina today. jill abramson was let go saying there was problem with her leadership style. she has accused top executives at the paper of sexism. over the weekend the publicist listed ways she was a bad manager. she will deliver a commencement speech this morning at wake forest university. buy directv for $49 billion

in a move that could affect customers. it would make at&t more competitive with other cable companies like comcast. comcast, by the way, parent company of nbc bay area. they expect a deal to be finalized by this time next year. comcast and at&t will need government approval for their mergers. at&t moves may make comcast case for a merger stronger. new this morning, no deal, british drugmaker astrazeneca rejected an offer from pfizer who wanted to buy the company for $119 billion. in a statement released just a few hours ago, astrazeneca's board said it had confidence in its ability to flourish as an independent business. pfizer the second largest drugmaker by revenue it has been trying to get this deal done by january. med students will start making a spectacle of themselves

with google glass. this month the school plans to hand out pairs of google glass to every student. several medical institutions are testing the wearable computers and a surgeon at ucsf started using google glass during procedure last year. used a pair to x-ray images while operating on patients. shelling out big bucks for twitch. a billion dollars. for that and the rest of the news before the bell, here's seema mody. >> google is reportedly striking a deal to buy it for $1 billion. the cash deal would be announced imminently. facebook is developing its own video chat app. the app would allow users to send short video messages using a touch screen. may be launched as early as this

month. features lower after stocks ended friday slightly higher rebounding from the worst daily performance in a month and better than expected reports. can the rally extend into this week? we have to watch. scott? want to check in with meteorologist christina loren. hopefully you're coming off a great weekend. >> really nice out there. back to business, though, this monday morning. you know, the weather is going to be nice where you don't have a heat wave to talk about. as we head through the next couple days that's what we'll watch for. north bay mountains and the western facing slopes surrounding san jose best chance for today and then tomorrow we'll all have a 20% chance for a few thunderstorms, really unstable air mass moving in. right now you can see what's happening. the wind is really starting to pick up in san francisco, but very isolated. you'll notice most of the cities here on the map are in the single digits to kick off the day, except for right at the immediate coast and in oakland. this morning take it easy if

you're crossing the golden gate bridge because the wind is pushing to the east and go from north to south on that bridge. temperatures today, these are some pretty pleasant conditions. i was able to give my ac a break and hopefully you were, too, as well over the weekend. 7 60s and 70s for today and then gradually bring those numbers up as you head through the next couple days. the models are actually picking it up at this point. we have the clock for you. at noon tomorrow a little thunderstorm cell surrounding the south bay and then we'll continue that chance for most of tomorrow, all the way through about 7:00 p.m. and then we'll start to see that situation improve. going to be kind of muggy around here as we get into the next couple days. remember, though, you can always get your seven-day forecast right there at the bottom of our screen and really comfortable numbers and by the end of the week, the weekend temperatures will start to climb, but not too

bad. >> we'll keep checking with you, thanks, christina. officials say that thousands of fish that washed up dead in southern california probably died from lack of oxygen. the l.a. county sheriff department found the fish on saturday after getting numerous calls from concerned residents. dead fish included anchovies, rays and other species. wildlife experts say the fish may have suffocated because there are so many of them in the water. >> it's scary. it's like one of those eke odocumentari doumentries where everything is dying. >> now, officials are worried about the stench left behind by all the dead fish. something similar happened in rodondo beach back in 2011 and eventually used as fertilizer. this week the chinese navy will start mapping out the sea bed in the latest search for the missing malaysian airliner. chinese, australian and malaysian authorities met over the weekend and agreed the ship would survey the floor of the

indian ocean, and automatic submarines already search ee ee square miles and found absolutely nothing. she will try to get rid of the country's coast guard after the failed rescue attempt in last month's ferry disaster. the president said she wants the coast guard to transfer its responsibilities to a new government agency she plans to create. root out corruption between regulators and shipping companies. more than 300 people went down with that ship, most of them students. new this morning, russian president vladimir putin has ordered troops near ukraine to return to their home bases. russian officials insisted there was no build up near the border. seeing the troops in the region were involved in regular training. this move appears to indicate putin's attention to de-escalate the tension in ukraine and also said she would support round table talks in the country, as well. 4:49. still ahead on "today in the

well, happy monday morning to you and good morning. 4:53 to you and here is a live picture of the bay bridge. i was saying the other day, it's a wonder this didn't have lights before because, obviously, that's what we need to be doing with that. oakland's triple a ball club is reportedly looking to cut ties with the a's to team up with the giants this morning. the "chronicle" reporting the sacramento river cats want to switch affiliation with the team when the a's agreement is up at the end of the season. oakland's triple-a club since 2000. so far no comment from oakland. right now the a's are in the process of trying to move to san jose but the giants have territorial rights to the south bay. california chrome could abandon his bid for the triple crown and all comes down to a

nasal strip. the central california horse wears nasal strips had to help him breathe. i could use that today. the final leg of the triple crown is the belmont stakes and that banned a horse from wearing nasal strips two years ago. the trainer suggested the horse might sit out the june 7th race if new york officials don't let hem wear that strip. the last horse to win the triple crown was back in 1978. i've been cheering on that horse since the beginning, i'm excited. over to the nba the warriors could end kevin love. love's contact with the minnesota timberwolves up at the end of next season. this basically forces the team to trade love or they'll likely lose him for nothing. love says he wants to play for a championship contender and the warriors and the chicago bulls are reportedly on his short list. all right, let's check in

everyone, thank you for joining us. i'm scott mcgrew. >> i'm laura garcia-cannon. california is bracing for its worst fire season yet. we have a team in place. bob redelll is live in morgan hill with how crews are gearing up. let's start out with meteorologist christina loren. we are expecting some lightning. >> lightning. a very slight chance for that today and a better chance for tomorrow but whenever you're talking about lightning in the bay area, as you know, our hillsides are mostly brown at this point and becomes a very dangerous situation. that's what we're watching for as we head throughout the next 48 hours. but this morning before you make your way out before you head out your front door. we have some really gusty wind picking up, especially at the immediate coast but you're okay in the inland valleys even through the elevations. as we head throughout the day today, tuesday, is when we're really expecting the thunderstorms any activity up in the north bay for today and higher elevations and same for the south bay and look at this. our
