5:00 am
everyone, thank you for joining us. i'm scott mcgrew. >> i'm laura garcia-cannon. california is bracing for its worst fire season yet. we have a team in place. bob redelll is live in morgan hill with how crews are gearing up. let's start out with meteorologist christina loren. we are expecting some lightning. >> lightning. a very slight chance for that today and a better chance for tomorrow but whenever you're talking about lightning in the bay area, as you know, our hillsides are mostly brown at this point and becomes a very dangerous situation. that's what we're watching for as we head throughout the next 48 hours. but this morning before you make your way out before you head out your front door. we have some really gusty wind picking up, especially at the immediate coast but you're okay in the inland valleys even through the elevations. as we head throughout the day today, tuesday, is when we're really expecting the thunderstorms any activity up in the north bay for today and higher elevations and same for the south bay and look at this. our futurecast models are
5:01 am
actually bringing in those thunderstorms for tomorrow. which is why the governor issued that alert yesterday. this brings us, bob redell who is live this morning. he is live out there in san jose and you're out there at cal fire this morning. what are crews out there gearing up. how are they getting ready for this, what could be a very dangerous fire season, bob. >> well, they're expected to be one of the busier fire seasons. good morning to you there, christina. i think the operative word for this fire season is early. cal fire here in morgan hill, they're already at peak staffing. that's a few week earlier than usual. the declaration of the start of the fire season that happened a couple weeks ago and that doesn't happen until a couple weeks from now. we are seeing conditions so dry, we usually don't see these type of conditions from mid to late summer and here we are in may and we're already seeing them and we have a number of fires and there's already been more than 1,500 fires this year alone
5:02 am
so far. that's about double what you would normally see at this point in time. governor jerry brown is appearing yesterday on one of the morning talk shows says that the state has 5,000 firefighters and around $600 million to fight these fires and sounds like a lot, but, apparently, according to the governor, it might not be. >> so, we have to gear up and we are going to deal with nature the best we can, but humanity is on a collision course with nature and we just going to have to adapt to it in the best way we can. >> firefighters say the one thing that you can do, if you live in a wild wind area where you have a lot of brush around a home or open field is make sure you have defensible space and that's usually clearance around your home of 30 to 100 feet. just 30 to 100 feet around that home, especially if that brush is dry. they want it away from there.
5:03 am
it will make it easier for the firefighters to defend your home if there is a fire in your area. christina? >> yeah, definitely something that is very early on in the season but something that we all want to be alert of as we head throughout the next couple months. very dry out there and looking hot. we'll tell you about the forecast for the week and right now i'll send it back to you, scott and laura. >> as you know, zwe have the weather covered even when we're not on the air. a look at the radar and the seven-day forecast for your neighborhood. it's all at nbc bbayarea.com. a mother accused of attacking a bully who allegedly targeted her younger daughter at school. christie smith joins us live. the alleged attack happened right there on school campus. >> good morning to you about lunchtime and the mom was arrested on suspicion of felony child abuse and she came to the

school midday apparently looking for what she thought was her daughter's bully. this isn't all of it a charter school here in santa rosa and found her 12-year-old son and asked to point out this boy who bullied her daughter. she then went up to this boy in front of other kids and grabbed him by the neck and then demanded that he stop the bullying behavior. the boy apparently ran in to tell adults on campus who then took pictures of what they say were marks on the boy's neck. no adult apparentlyc conferenrontation and she did n check out at the office before she arrived, which usually adults are required to do. she has been released on $30,000 bail, a letter, we're told, is being drafted from the district to parents to be sent home today to let them know what happened. she is due in court on thursday. reporting live in santa rosa, christie smith, "today in the

spring, you know, we do get thunderstorms traditionally in the springtime and as we head throughout the next couple days we're keeping our guard up with this go around because of the potential for some fires to break out. we do have isolated lightning strikes in the forecast, cloud to ground lightning strikes possible especially through the higher elevations where we do have the dry brush. that's what we're watching for. later on today the best opportunity for that up through the north bay mountain and the western facing slopes and higher elevations near mt. hamilton surrounding san jose. this is what we're working with the wind is picking up and area of low pressure will ride throughout our north and it's kicking up this really gusty wind this morning if you're headed out and about and you do drive a high-profile vehicle, if you do drive one, you want to keep in mind you could get by those strong gusts. as we head throughout the day today, this is what we're expecting that fog bank will set up right at the coastline and get that cool, westerly breeze and comfortable temperatures and as that area of low pressure comes through, a better chance

lunchtime without checking in at the office, which is something parents are usually asked to do and she asked her son, who goes to the this school to point out an 11-year-old boy that she believes was bullying her 10-year-old daughter. investigators say she confronted the boy about the bullying and then grabbed him by the throat in front of other students that were there. no adults certainly witnessed this at all but the victim did have marks on his neck that were photographed. then she was arrested saturday and then released after posting a $30,000 bail. we are told that a note is going to go home with students today explaining exactly what happened here and that the mom is due in court, we are told, on thursday. reporting live in santa rosa, christi christie smith, "today in the bay." waiting to learn the identity of a hiker after falling from a large rock in the berkeley hills. it happened on uc berkeley
