"today in the bay" bob redell is live near the school with doors are locked and no trespassing signs are up. if you're a student, what are you supposed to do? >> bryman students are supposed to come back here at 10:00 a.m. this morning and they'll have their questions answered. such as will i graduate? will i get college credit? if not, will i get a refund? the santa clara county put up a green no trespassing office and students were in class at the time, received no notice.

"today in the bay" peggy bunker live in san jose with more on that debate. good morning, peggy. >> good morning, laura. i don't know about you, but back in school we had scary things
5:05 am
like horrible pizza, bad burritos and i stuck with the safe stuff like french fries and that is a battle that the first lady is waging. our kids are just eating junk when they go to school and believe it or not she's facing opposition on capitol hill today. today is the day the senate appropriations committee will meet to talk about what the standards are for food lunches. they have been getting healthier, less salt, less fat, less sugar. guidelines imposed after the nutritional content of what our kids are eating at school came under scrutiny. the school that adhere to the guidelines says a lot of the healthy food they ended up serving ended up in the trash and ended up costing them money. giving struggling schools a one-year waiver from the requirements. school nutrition association says the guidelines just go too far. >> you just need a little more time to get the kids used to what we're offering and have the products available that we can get at a reasonable cost and that students will accept.
5:06 am
>> now, as you might imagine, the first lady was so horrified by this concept that we might take a couple steps back on this issue. she called several people together and many health food advocates to the white house to discuss the issue. the people that attended that meeting say she was just outraged by it. in fact, she was so strongly upset about it, they actually spoke out to reporters afterwards. so they will hear about these guidelines relaxing them for certain schools for up to a year where, i guess, we'll see squares of pizzas coming back on school trays, once again. you can imagine, laura, parents will watch this one very closely. >> definitely, you want to know what your kids are eating, as well. for you and i, as well, we'll put down the doughnut and pick up the fruit this morning. >> i'm trying. >> so am i. thanks a lot. let's join meteorologist christina loren this morning. i see a lot of green behind you. >> i'm thinking about fried chicken not fruit at this point.

holiday weekend. that's coming up next. here's mike with your drive. >> looking christina at the south bay and northbound 101 and flow pretty typical volume and let's look at the entire south bay. typical right here with that green, but a little farther south heading out of los gatos and reports around a three or four vehicle crash and that direction looks a little slow. we have reports that one lane is currently blocked. this might be sticking out into the second lane, only two available through the area. that is a concern as you're heading south through the santa cruz mountains and still waiting for an update from chp and i do see the sensors and they tell the tale of a smoother drive. heading up towards the bay bridge. we get a look at that bridge because it has a wind advisory issued by chp overnight. same thing for the carquinez, benicia bridges and gusty conditions at times like it was yesterday evening and plan for that and no problems reported other than a warning.
5:09 am
>> all right, mike, thank you much. san francisco's famous tourist spot might be closed during the weekends and the summer. >> i like how you did that. a proposal is on the table to temporarily block off tourists because of safety concerns. "today in the bay" christie smith joins us live by laumbard street on details why neighbors support the possible closure, i would imagine. good morning, christie. >> good morning to you, scott and laura. we just drove it this morning on the way to our story and easy to forget what kind of white knuckle drive it is. you is have to hold on and pump the brakes. it is a fun ride, but you forget that there are neighbors nearby and what some of them are saying that the tourism they're seeing is just too much. the crooked street is packed with cars and spewing exhaust and people driving, hanging out of windows, snapping selfies as they go down and some rolling rocks down to see what they'll do. what is happening now is what
5:10 am
maybe they're saying is that it spills over into the russian hill neighborhood. so, today the municipal transportation agency will consider a summer shutdown. this is almost temporary for about four weeks between june 21 and july 13th from noon to 6:00 also on the fourth of july, which happens to fall on a friday this year. mta says that the long lines of cars can create safety issues spilling out to other streets. as you can imagine, for tourists, well, they're not too happy saying this is part of the san francisco experience. but what would happen is that this would impact eastbound traffic on lombard street between larkin and leavenworth at the times that i mentioned. it's only an experiment, though, that could eventually lead to more shutdowns but one thing is for sure. whatever happens back here live no matter what kind of shut downs they do, you can always still walk it. so, good exercise for you. reporting live in san francisco,

let's take you to live pictures right now. this is out of moscow, russia. this is what we were reporting on earlier. a train crash that has killed at least five people, apparently a cargo train had derailed and somehow ran into a passenger train. you are looking at live pictures beamed all the way from russia. we don't have a lot of information about what is going on. but we continue to monitor that and, again, in moscow, russia. about five people dead. >> looks like they're assessing the tracks and we'll keep tabs on that for you this morning. also, checking the forecast with meteorologist christina loren. >> one of those interesting weather days. we don't typically see thunderstorm activity in the state of california. a rare occurrence any time of year. if there is a time we see it more than any other season, it will be in the spring. getting the action on the radar and not in the bay area yet. we do stand a chance for isolated showers later on today.
5:18 am
temperatures too cool for it and temperatures mostly in the 50s and you can see that radar over the sierra nevada just lit up this morning. a lot of these lightning strikes have come in over the past two hours. so, it's getting more active. as the morning draws on and as that area of low pressure moves to the south. now, for us today, we're just going to see light shower activity for the first part of the day and then as we head throughout the evening hours, we bring in that chance for isolated thunderstorms by tomorrow morning that system is out of here and we start a warm up off shore flow. that's in the mix as we get into this weekend and it will bring our temperatures up just in time for memorial bay. comfortable conditions three to five degrees below seasonal averages. 64 degrees in san francisco and that cool air that is keeping our atmosphere here in the bay area nice and stable. we are going to see more instability as the day draws on. we stop that clock for you at 9:00 a.m. and you can see getting some action in the south bay at that point. just light activity. don't bring your umbrella with

5:20 am
chp arrived and monterey gives us that update and folks coming up from the santa cruz did not and the southbound is distracted but the lanes are open. that's a little better news for our commuters who are watching and heading south towards that side of the hill. the rest of your bay moves very smoothly and we prepare for a traffic break and we'll watch that and the reports, but no major slowing there and that shouldn't be a big issue. looking over here for the west 580. a stall at north flin in the backup here that is starting to form as folks are slowly driving over towards livermore and a typical pattern and the rest of your bay, very smooth. wind advisories for carquinez bridge and watch the richmond, san rafael bridge, as well. we have more traffic flow than yesterday and that's typical of a tuesday. we'll track it, but so far, no major slowing, back to you. >> thank you, mike. new this morning, actor best known for his role in "the shield" has been arrested in connection with the shooting death of his wife, april.

5:33 am
>> sarah, i know they have been implementing tougher building codes after this disaster. how is that going, how is the progress on that? >> the city council voted a couple weeks ago to vote in these stricter building codes. they now require all homes to be built to withstand winds of 135 miles per hour. that is the equivalent of an ef-3 tornado. obviously, it would not have helped if you were in the direct path of the tornado last year, but what officials are hoping is that it saved some homes and future tornadoes that are on the edges of that tornado. not getting hit by the direct force, but by those side winds. >> makes sense. thank you very much this morning. and we have an update now to breaking news in russia. investigators say a faulty track caused a cargo train to collide with a passenger train near moscow killing five and injuring 45. this is new video near the crash scene that was just into our newsroom. it is actually unclear what was wrong with the track, but we do

"today in the bay" bob redell live near that school.
5:35 am
some students left without any options. >> they are given how this went down. you can see the back of that green sign right there on the entrance of bryman college there. yesterday the santa clara county office posted those green signs in every single office and classroom door and what it says, the warning to people not to trespass. no trespassing sign and also without notice, students were told that the school was shutting down, some of these students were in the middle of class. >> we have no idea we're in computer class, guy came in, excused our teacher and came back in and she's like, you know what, guys, you're right. the school is being closed. >> and then they were told they had just an hour to pack up and leave. a locksmith arrived to change the locks on all 30 doors and would only tell us this was a landlord/tenant dispute. one of the signs reads eviction restoration notice. >> i had no idea. did they not pay their rent? did they not do something right?
5:36 am
why is it closing? >> that student whose name is amanda is hoping to get answers later this morning. our understanding that the students were told to come by at 10:00 and they will get an explanation to what happened. amanda who trained to be a medical assistant wonders if bryman college will be able to refund her some of her tuition. she spent $16,000 on this eight-month program and supposed to be graduating in two months. right now that clearly is on hold. she doesn't know if that will be restarted and that is a concern. we did reach out to bryman college and they had no comment. bryman college is owned by biohealth college. this location used to be everest college but bought out by bryman last year. reporting live here in san jose, bob redell "today in the bay." a memorial grew overnight at the scene of a deadly amtrak accident in san leandro. the police say 18-year-old brittany silva was wearing
