6:05 am
the sun's starting to peek through, good morning, christina. >> hey, good morning to you. 6:04 now. what a lovely day we have in store. it is going to be one of the days where it doesn't look like or feeling more like some of the subtropical latitudes as we have some mois xture coming up from e south and colliding with the low pressure from the north and that's why we have the chance for thunderstorms today. right now mostly cloudy in emeryville and the clouds will thicken up. nice chill in the air, 56 degrees and muggy conditions as we head throughout the day today and activated your doppler radar for a good reason. how unstable this air mass is as it comes up over the higher elevations and a chance for isolated thunderstorm activity and you can see most of this right now is up in the way high elevations of the sierra nevada. so, for us, if we do see any activity, best chance between about 12:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. but take a look at this, we're
6:06 am
getting rainfall, rainfall at this hour. and those showers are actually intensifying a bit, getting some organized activity at this point through fremont and all of this in the south bay as that system of low pressure tracks to the south. here's what you can expect as you head out and about this tuesday. widespread clouds, light mountain showers to start the day. that's a live picture of san jose and you can see even overcast here at this point. stray showers by mid-day and a few isolated thunderstorms expected over the east bay hills and then by this evening, just spectacular conditions. that system of low pressure moves out and that dry air mass will start to set up and, yeah, high pressure building in and a warming trend into the weekend. enjoy the 70s for today. this is the coolest day in the extended period and then we bring on that heat. we'll talk about that coming up in just a bit. right now a traffic tuesday, here's our own mike inouye. >> because it is tuesday we're watching that heavier volume of traffic and that's what we see here at the bay bridge toll plaza. we see a little different flow as we look out here, the live

"today in the bay" peggy bunker joins us from that home on sound point drive. are they saying why it's suspicious, peggy? >> absolutely. we were inside talking to the homeowner he was incredibly upset. he is trying to protect his family, he has five kids and he's events keep happening over and over again. he doesn't know why he's being targeted. let's show you what happened and the remnants here of the palm trees in his driveway. his two cars used to be parked here in the driveway, but not after midnight. this is when this was lit on fire. somebody from the surveillance video, you can see coming up, putting some kind of accelerant on top of the car.
6:09 am
we are going to be showing you that coming up as soon as we get that sent over here to the newsroom and it's pretty riveting video because you see these people approach these cars, put something on it and run away. we'll show that to you coming up. once again, talking to him inside you feel for this dad who is trying to protect his kids. he has teenagers and he doesn't know why this is happening. the first time someone came up and threw paint on his cars. we'll have that for you here. i'm peggy bunker "today in the bay." >> looked like fire ensh tinguishers out there. did he put them out himself? >> he did. he had the palm tree on top of the cars and because of the dry weather they lit up quite quickly so that's when the fire department became involved responding to the scene once he realized it was too much for him to handle. >> lucky the house didn't catch on fire, thanks a lot, peggy. coming up "today in the bay" a new happy meal mascot on twitter. the new character named happy

6:14 am
>> good morning to you. closed on certain weekends during the summer, the peak of the tourist season. we took a drive this morning, it is fun, but quite the white knuckle drive. one woman nearby said she was almost hit by someone not paying attention as they were flied down crooked lombard street. so, for four weekends this summer between june 21 and july 13th lombard plus the next block up may be closed to cars and also the fourth of july it would be closed. that falls on a friday this year. the neighbors say it's the exhaust, the lines of traffic, cars trying to get through, bikes, even people on ska skateboards trying to make it down lombard streets. just a little too much. the municipal transportation agency looking at an airport. between larkin and leavenworth.
6:15 am
tourists not too happy about this, but this is one of their quick stops. only two minutes with a huge payoff. beautiful views once you get past that wait at the top. now, they're going to just look at this as a temporary thing, but it could lead to more closures in the future. but one thing they say for sure, no matter what they decide to do, you'll always be able to walk it. reporting live in san francisco, christie smith. >> or in your chance rollerblade it. >> that's a little risky for me. >> thanks a lot, christie. great day for skateboarding down lombard street. a live look at san jose. and a good morning to christina, as well. >> isn't that nice? it really is. we traded in the fog and so far really no may gray this month and for the mid-levels clouds and feels pretty tropical out there and looks like florida later on today.
6:16 am
as we have some subtropical moisture sneaking up for the south colliding with the area of low pressure from the north and as a result we're talking about thunderstorms today with those two contrasting air masses. now, let's talk about where we stand right now. temperatures are pretty comfortable out there. it's going to stay comfortable all day long and even the warmest cities across the bay area. only jumping out of the tos where we are right now and reaching into the low 70s. but here's the deal, we're still getting the lightning strikes. these are real-time lightning strikes along the sierra nevada. as we head throughout the day today and we accumulate more daytime heating with this unstable air mass overhead. the chance for thunderstorms actually gets better we're accumulating some pretty good moisture at this point. you might have to use your windshield wipers this morning as you make your way up through 880 and fremont. we'll check with mike on that moment and one of those days active weather in the bay area and then things change. let me show you your futurecast for the day. as we head through the 9:00 hour mostly in the south bay and
6:17 am
start to light up a touch as we head through the afternoon and evening hours. this is what is so impressive about this system and dropping snowfall today in tahoe and going to see pretty good totals, as well, in the higher elevations surrounding yosemite. above 7,000 feet. very interesting. now, as we head throughout the evening hours system heads out of here and start to see a nice, dry set up take place and temperatures are going to climb as that ridge of high pressure sets up. 64 degrees in san francisco and 72 in the south bay and 73 in the east bay getting really pretty clouds out there this morning and this is where we're headed. the sun returns in full force by tomorrow, up to 78 degrees. we'll return to the low 80s in the south bay by thursday into friday and then looking comfortable, not too hot, but just warm enough for your outdoor activities near the water as we head throughout memorial day. keep that in mind, temperatures are going to be comfortable as we head throughout memorial day, but just nice enough, just nice enough to where you can get out to the water. let's check your drive, here's
6:18 am
mike. >> all right, christina. we'll take you out to the roadways and we'll see what you can see over here. westbound we see a lot of traffic. it is a concern because it is traffic tuesday and this dublin flow is typically lighter than what you see on a tuesday. let me show you on the maps tri-valley and lighter flow of traffic and upper speeds and flowing right at the dublin interchange and south 680 at the bottom of your screen and this, this traffic was held up westbound 580 and an earlier stall over on the shoulder and now a crash in this backup. this is a problem coming out of the altamont pass and then easing up and a benefit for folks traveling through livermore and eastbound getting out of the area also distracted by the activity and slowing eastbound just approaching that same area and we're looking at a smoother flow for 84 and slowing and typical for the tri-valley. here's the south bay with northbound 101 and slowing there and your typical spot, but, again, little lighter than we expect at this time on a tuesday
6:19 am
and 87 just a tiny bit, tiniest bit coming up into downtown. over here the rest of the bay give you a wider shot and now coming into the south bay, the earlier crash we had on 17 at the summit. if you heard about it earlier, it has cleared and southbound is moving smoothly. over here a little slowing for 880 through hayward and fremont and typical spot and lighter pattern over towards the peninsula for the dumbarton and san mateo bridges. actually just starting to pick up right here north of university towards willow and san francisco and we'll get another live look outside and see how the bay bridge toll plaza is holding up. no big drama and things are moving well here and slowing coming out of the maze and off the east shore freeway. we'll send it back to you. >> all right, mike, thank you much. the website the guardian is investigating these very strange claims this morning about the world's first drinkable sunscreen. >> so strange. first, "the guardian" points out all sunscreen is drinkable.
6:20 am
you first, probably shouldn't drink it. what they mean is a sunscreen you're supposed to drink, if you do, molecules of the product are said to vibrate into your skin and keep you from getting burned. the telegraph and the mail posted stories about the sunscreen without really posting the obvious questions, like how it would actually work. the product has not been approved by actual dermatolog t dermatologists, but there are plenty of testimonials on the company's website. >> i would say hold off until you learn more, yes. >> just lather it on for the time being. mcdonald's testing out a new mascot for its happy meals. >> the new character's name is happy. how bad could it be? well, let's take a look. yeah. the character is supposed to encourage kids to eat healthy, it is, that is a big mouth guy. mcdop ldz now including gogurt in its happy meals. >> that's a lot of mouth.

"today in the bay" sarah joins us from moore this morning. the down town is rebuilding, bu certainly the scars are still there. >> certainly, scott and laura. today is a delicate balance. the city wants to remember those 25 people killed in the tornadoes, while still recognizing and celebrating the progress that has been made since then. and it has been made. neighborhoods rebuilding, the two schools that were destroyed also rebuilding. behind me is plaza towers elementary. one of the two schools and it
6:32 am
was the school where seven students were killed. now, construction is well under way. it's expected to be completed by august, in time for the new school year and this building will have a tornado shelter, unlike the old building which did not. there's a push right now from some parents to make sure that every oklahoma school has one of those tornado shelters. believe it or not, only 60%, 60% of them are without tornado shelters. at this point. now, coming up later today there is going to be a ceremony honoring the 25 that were killing and then a groundbreaking of the moore medical center. it was ripped apart by the powerful ef-5 tornado that carved a 17 mile-long path through the community and on the ground for an unbelievable 39 minutes. and when it was all said and done, homes, businesses, schools just reduced to a pile of rubble. so, this groundbreaking will be very symbolic today. a way to honor the past while
6:33 am
still focusing on moving forward into the future. scott and laura. >> the people there are so resilient. >> we could hear all the construction behind you. sounds like a busy type of activity. >> yeah. that is the sound here in moore when you go to these neighborhoods that when we visited them last year were just piles of stick and concrete. a lot of work for construction crews here. and a lot of people, we're told, about half the people whose homes were destroyed last year chose to rebuild on their exact same lots and other people taking the opportunity to start fresh, perhaps in a new neighborhood and perhaps they wanted to be in a new school district but the overwhelming majority saying they are staying here in moore and it is their community and they're not leaving. >> wow, it's home. it's home to them. thanks so much. "today" show will certainly continue coverage of the first anniversary of that deadly tornado. matt lauer will give a report from the spot where the tornado touched down. that will come up at 7:00. that's right after "today in the

bay." >> hard to believe the devastation there. all right moving on to our own forecast giving you a live look outside. peek at san jose on your left and san francisco on your right. kind of a cloudy start to the day. checking in with christina right now. >> kind of muggy out there, as well, as we kick off your tuesday. take a look at this. these aren't the typical low clouds that you see in san francisco. these are mid-level clouds and we have some subtropical air moving in and as a result it will feel muggy with an area of low pressure just to our east. i will show you that in just one mnlt. here's the deal. lots of clouds in place for today and sh the chance for thunderstorms yet again. we'll keep those breezy to windy conditio conditions as well. here's our weathermaker. right now situated over reno. the best chance today for those thunderstorms and the showers as we get into the afternoon hours will be on the east side of the bay area. the east bay hills, in particular, that's what we're watching also. we could see action on the
6:35 am
western facing slopes surrounding san jose. but take a look at this right now. this is all the lightning we've had over the past three hours. along the sierra nevada, hundreds of real-time strikes and here in the bay area, getting a little bit more active at this point, as well. steady rainfall coming in at this point over the santa cruz mountains and organized cells developing over the east shore in fremont, so you might have to use your windshield wipers from time to time this morning but overall looking pretty good for today, for just light activity. if we see any of the thunderstorms. brief, heavy downpour certainly possible but that's isolated and confined to the higher elevations. temperatures this morning feels kind of muggy out there, but it is comfortable. 57 degrees right now in san francisco and only climb to 64 degrees with limited sunshine throughout the day today in the city up to 72 degrees in the south bay and 75 degrees is the forecasted high in the north bay. so, overall, a little breezy out there and travel cautiously in your high-profile vehicle. let's check that drive, here's mike inouye.

>> extremely ishilated showers and tim just reported that. the off ramp there but by the time we got about less than a mile away over at our station, had cleared and the dry road. there you go and that is moving nicely. 101 in san jose where traffic is flowing very nicely right there and we do have a slow down, which is just kicking in in earnest from alum rock all the way to the scene here at 680. the flow of the traffic slow for 101 and 87 is the one that seems to change over the last few. at the bottom of your screen at north 85 and saratoga reports a cone, a construction cone in lanes, as well. that will cause a little distraction until they can clear that. over here 580 westbound moves smoothly and smoothly out of the altamont pass and look at that over towards the dublin interchange and south 680 now shows the slowing into sunol. cleared all lanes and a slower drive for hayward and fremont but smooth getting over from the dumbarton and san mateo bridges. a little early for that, even on
