in thailand. taking control of the country. just hours ago the army chief went on national television announcing the commission that imposed martial law earlier this week would now manage the country's administration. the army hosted talks between the country's two sides today, but got no where. the yellow sign have been arrested while leaders of the red side believe the army is against them and have promise to resist the coup. the latest unrest in the country started late last year when demonstrators took to the streets to force the prime minister to step down. they accused her of being a proxy for her brother who was ousted in a military coup in 2006. the thai army is imposing a nationwide curfew with no one outside their homes between 10:00 at night and 5:00 in the morning. also developing this morning, a series of bomb blasts have killed 31 people at a market in china, at least 90 others were hurt. investigators say two suvs crashed through barriers and into the market just before 8:00

this morning. the vehicles drove into crowds of people and passengers threw bombs out the windows. happened in the city of urumqi. the deadliest attack in the province since 2009. china blamed recent knife and bomb attacks on separatist militants. so far no one has claimed responsibilities for today's attacks. the southern california man accused of holding a teenage girl captive for a decade will be in court. peggy bunker here with this story. this girl apparently escape would the use of facebook. >> that is a wonderful thing. that's how she got out of this situation. this shocking case. now 41 years old accused of kidnapping his then girlfriend's teenage daughter and keeping her captive for ten years and forced her into marriage. garcia arrested on tuesday and being held on $1 million bail. accused of false imprisonment and a lewd act with a minor and

kidnap for rape. the victim who has not been identified said she was drugged by him ten years ago after which she was kidnapped and held captive in a garage. the girl reported that she lost all hope after garcia told her that her family stopped looking for her and that she'd be deported to mexico if she left him. here's a timeline of this ten-year ordeal. started in 2004 and then 15 years old when she was kidnapped from santa ana by garcia and drove her to a home in compton where he assaulted her reportedly. he forced the girl to marry him using false documents to hide their identities. in 2012 five years after that forced marriage the victim gives birth to a child with garcia and then now in 2014, the victim contacted her sister via facebook and comes forward telling authorities that she was kidnapped. now, after being rescued, the girl told police she tried to leave him many times before. >> my understanding is there was

continued and repeated sexual assaults. on two occasions she tried to escape. he caught her. he beat her for her efforts. >> now, garcia moved with the victim many times. she also got them overnight cleaning jobs so he could keep his eye on the victim and also avoid detection. back to you. >> peggy, thank you. also new this morning, we're learning more about the condition of a woman stabbed on a san jose trail overnight. so far police not releasing any information, though, on a motive or a suspect. this happened on a trail near the virginia light rail station in san jose, not far from downtown. we are continuing to follow the story and we'll bring you more detail as we get them this morning. ac04 and today a santa rosa mom charged with child abuse will make her first court appearance. she attacked a student she thought was bullying her daughter. "today in the bay" christie smith joins us live in the courthouse in santa rosa. christie, still unclear if her

daughter was actually bullied. >> good morning to you, laura. we may learn more about what really happened when this mom went to a school to confront this boy that she thought was bullying her daughter. the deputies looked into it and they're saying that they haven't established that any bullying really happened between these two. the question is, was this even the right child that she confronted? the mom, 30-year-old delia garcia-bratcher speaking through her attorney denies ever grabbing this fifth grade boy by the throat and the boy hurled racial slurs at her daughter. garcia-bratcher is native american. she was accused of going to the school last friday and confronting the boy that she believed was tormenting her daughter and grabbing him by the throat. as you can imagine, parents were stunned. >> just for someone to walk in like that and do something like that, it's frightening. >> it does bother me. but at the same time i

understand there is not a lot they can do. >> now, a letter from the school did go home to families on monday. no adults witnessed this, though. apparently was only kids at the school, but the school did take pictures of marks on the boy's neck and apparently that was enough to convince deputies to go ahead and make the arrest. garcia-bratcher was released on bail and will make her first court appearance this morning. reporting live, christie smith, today in the bay. >> thanks. marine biologist will head out to a peninsula beach to check out a dead humpback whale washed up near the sea wall just off highway 1. a lot of people pulled over and gotten out of the cars. take a look, this is actually a live picture of a dead whale. that caused traffic to back up in the area as people take pictures. it's not clear how long the whale there has been there. >> when i saw it, i kind of felt like it doesn't really look like a whale.

i thought it was a rock at first but then when a wave came in it kind of moved and, yeah. >> when i drove by earlier today i saw just some kind of a big, black mass out towards the tip of and i thought it was a boat or something like that. >> now, dead whales are always kind of an issue. no word yet exactly on what officials are planning to do about the whale. it is 5:07. santa clara county has filed a lawsuit against the world's five largest drug companies. claim the makers of drugs like oxycontin has manipulated doctors into prescribing more pain killers. drug companies are encouraging patients to ask for pain meds to treat common conditions like arthritis, headaches and back pain. the suit was filed in orange county. let's check in this morning with christina loren and our microclimate forecast. good morning. >> hey, good morning to you. we are so close to that holiday weekend at this point. if you have the day off on monday, yeah, go ahead and make those outdoor plans, it looks good. this morni ing temperatures prey

chilly out there. clouds span inland and temperatures are going to climb, but we'll have to wait until 10:00 to noon before we see that climb as the clouds are settled in for the first part of the day. here's what you can expect, though. overcast sky in the south bay and that will keep your temperatures from soaring just for today those numbers will soar. as we get into the weekend, we are talking about a return of the 90s, but right now golden gate bridge mostly clear. we can watch the progression of that fog developing as we head throughout the morning together but right now the best drive here all day long that fog will be settled in. we got one of those days where temperatures much cooler at the immediate coast than what we have for you inland and 67 degrees and in san francisco 80 degrees meanwhile. here in the south bay for today, that is not too hot. might be a little too hot for you as we get into this upcoming weekend. up to 88 degrees, but, hey, a lot going on in san francisco where it will be nice and cool. and we'll tell you about the free events for you and your family.

let's check your drive and welcome in mike inouye. >> some fog and clouds that you're talking about. the glow because of the moisture in the air and still see the tops of the towers and not see the city lights. keep that in mind here. smooth drive on the approach and look at the maps what we're talking about, as well. traffic flows smoothly across the area and no metering lights just yet. the issue is eastbound at san pablo avenue and a crash reported now and moved quickly to the shoulder and involves a big rig. a little distraction and a slight bit of slowing as they move the trucks and the cars to the shoulder. we'll track this, but so far your commute direction very smoothly off the carquinez bridge. no big drama for livermore, 580 westbound or highway 84 shows the build. san jose northbound at story just got word of a crash here and maybe a bigger truck involved here and sounds like it moved to the shoulder. no slowing shows up just yet and roads and rails and tracking those for the mass transit group

and no delays for any of the major agencies. and we'll look at the peninsula, as well. palo alto very light for the peninsula here for 101 and at speed between san francisco and the south bay. back to you. >> thank you, mike. a meeting tonight to talk about plans to expand light rail service in mountain view. the vta plans to add a second set of light rail tracks between the mountain view station and whisman station. the extra tracks would allow to offer expanded service in the area and help better accommodate people headed to levi stadium. tonight's meeting starts at 6:00 at mountain view city hall. another meeting tonight b.a.r.t. will hear from its public and staff on fare options and extension to the oakland airport this fall. the 3.2 mile ride will carry riders from oakland call setoom the airport. a set fare is expected to be finalized in the next few weeks. this meeting starts at 5:00 over in the kaiser center in oakland.

flakes could cost 30% more by 2030. climate change is already affecting the coffee crop. high temperatures killed 40% of guatemala's last year. former burrberry ceo officially took over as apple retail and online sales division head this month. aarons reportedly visited a number of stores talking to employees about operations. she is reportedly looking at overhauling a number of areas including changing the shopping experience. opening more stores in china, as well. the stores have basically been the same since the first one opened in the washington, d.c., area 13 years. reverend jesse jackson will be at facebook meeting today pushing for an increased minority presence in boardrooms. here's video from last week when he was at ebay's meeting.

there. i want to put that on your radar right off the bat this morning. but for today, not too bad. as we get into this afternoon, it will be three to five degrees warmer than where we ended up yesterday, but, overall, temperatures will be comfortable. this evening, fantastic for your barbecue plans and might be knocking off early. a holiday weekend around the corner and a lot of people taking tomorrow off. 67 degrees in san francisco and 74, good morning to you out in the east bay and 80 degrees later on today. it's going to be warm here in the south bay, but not too bad and we're not talking about triple digits. even as we get deeper into the warming trend and getting into that all-important ekend. up to 88 degrees on sunday in san jose. so, let me tell you, i told you, i promised you. i was going to tell you about free events happening. this is in santa cruz. you want to head out to the beach there. saturday and sunday they're having a longpboard surf competition and phenomenal out there. pretty large swells and

temperatures comfortable in the 70s. memorial day you want to get involved and pay tribute, you could head out to presidio memorial day. everybody who has served our country and everybody that has fallen. keep you updated and tell you what's going on across the bay area. welcome in our own mike inouye. >> a great note. remember, memorial day is not just a holiday for many businesses, let's go out here towards the roadways, folks with the change in direction. northbound is moving smoothly and southbound i saw a little slow down and a car pulled over to the side and that cleared and so did anybody who was distracted. the north bibound side, i was watching over here. reports of a crash approaching that 680 interchange and i don't see any slowing and no flashing lights and chp will track that. tri-valley and a little slowing

towards that dublin interchange and we're seeing a little slow down and an earlier bit of debris in the roadway and that cleared without incident. the leading edge of most of your traffic coming up towards the isabel interchange there. a smooth flow of traffic for 880 and picking up a few more folks and red blip eastbound and let's look at the live shot out there and i don't see any problems. don't see any slowing through the area and construction crew on that side of the bridge and that could be causing a little slowing as they start to clear and pick up. flashing lights, there you go. our sensors don't lie. >> nor do you, mike. alameda and contra costa county sheriffs say they will release inmates who are only being held because of their immigration status. a federal judge ruled an oregon jail violated a woman's rights by holding her without probable cause because federal agents wanted to deport her. according to the contra costa

times immigration and custom enforcement makes about 1,000 similar requests of the jail every year and says be honoring the requests any longer. they made the same decision in san mateo county officials say they will release people on that same position, at least on a case-by-case basis. new u.s. census data out this morning confirms what we already knew, san jose's population now tops 1 million people. solidify it spot as the tenth largest in the nation and san francisco population also grew in 2013 by just over 1%. the report found 7 of the top 15 fastest growing cities in the nation are in texas with san marcos coming in at number one. >> how do you get your mail? getting it delivered at your doorstep could actually soon become a thing of the past. under a new proposed law in congress, millions of americans may no longer get their mail delivered right to their door. instead those communial or

welcome back, everyone. and a very good thursday morning to you. taking a live look at at&t park out there. the giants play the rockies at 12:10 this afternoon. it's all covered up. they're getting ready for a big concert out there. i think cisco rented it out for a big concert that will be there because the giants are in colorado playing the rockies. 5:23. minor league player who reportedly bit off part of a teammate's ear during a fight has been suspended. veteran catcher will be suspended from the triple-a team until the dodgers complete an investigation into that incident. the allege victim still on the roster this morning. he's recovering, however, from reconstructive surgery on his ear and he's set to be in the

hospital for a few more days. ironically, in an interview this spring tell mundo he said if he was not a baseball player, he would be a boxer, like mike tisayson but without biting off ear. mike kruko getting all the attention. he suggested that troy tulowitzki was getting signs to help him play during home games. in other words, the accusation is he knew which pitches were coming. tulowitzki has batted over .500 at games at home in the past six weeks. now, cruko says he understands numbers like that for a week or a weekend but over six weeks that's unthinkable, he said. walt weiss chuckled at the comments telling "chronicle" teams accusing other teams of getting pitches in their

witnesses say the vehicles drove into crowds of people. this happened not far from the country of kazakhstan. this is the deadliest attack since 2009. china has blamed recent knife and bomb attacks in the area on separatist militants. and in ukraine, 11 troops killed in the deadliest raid in the region has seen in weeks. officials say pro-russian insurgents attacked a military checkpoint about 20 miles south of the city. in addition to the 11 killed, 30 ukrainian troops were hurt in the attack and some of them reportedly in grave condition. the pro-russian insurgents reportedly stole weapons off the dead and injured. this morning, the southern california man accused of holding a teenage girl captive for a decade will be in court and "today in the bay" peggy bunker joins us with this story. peggy, reportedly the girl was able to get out because of facebook. >> that proved to be the lifeline that she really needed reaching out on facebook to escape garcia, now 41 years old. he is accused of kidnapping his

then girlfriend's teenage daughter and holding her captive for ten years. garcia forced her into marriage and even fathered a child with the victim. garcia was arrested on tuesday and being held on $1 million bail and accused of false inprisonment and the victim who has not been identified told police that she was drugged by her mother's boyfriend, garcia, ten years ago after which she was kidnapped and held. she endured physical, mental assaults for years. the girl reported she lost all hope after garcia told her her family stopped looking for her and she would be deported to mexico if she left him. >> i didn't know anything. >> seemed concerned at the time? >> yes, she was concerned. >> you can't go home. you're here illegally. your mom calls the police, they will send you back. >> here's a timeline of this

ten-year ordeal. in 2004 this 15-year-old girl is kidnapped. in 2007, garcia forces the girl to marry him using false documents. five years later in 2012 the victim gives birth to their child and in 2014, the victim contacts her sister via facebook and comes forward telling authorities that she was kidnapped. now, amazingly a nanny who helped to care for the child of the pair said she never suspected a thing even going so far to say that they were the perfect couple who doted on their 3-year-old daughter. neighbors who lived near the pair don't necessarily agree with that sentiment. we'll have them coming up here in the next half hour. back to you. >> peggy, thank you. meanwhile, a man was arrested overnight for insighting a riot after police officers shot and killed a suspect on the streets of solinas. taunted officers and harassed a police dog and convinced others to join in during a demonstration. he and more than 100 others filled the streets last night in response to a police shooting tuesday. officers had shot and killed a

man because they say he lunged at them with garden shears. now, video of that shooting was posted to youtube leading to last night's protest. this morning a bay area mother who deputies say attacked a school bully will make her first court appearance. "today in the bay" christie smith joins us live at the courthouse in santa rosa and there's a chance we may hear from this mother this morning. >> yeah, good morning to you. that's exactly right and so far at least through her attorney, she's telling a very different story. she's saying she did go to the elementary school and confront the boy that she thought was bullying her daughter saying things like stop it, leave her alone, stop calling her names. she says that she never touched the boy and never put her hands on his neck, as she's being accused of and that's what got delia garcia-bratcher under the weekend. she got into it with a fifth grader that she believed was bullying her 10-year-old

daughter. the attorney said the alleged bully made a racial slur. garcia-bratcher is native american. the whole incident, as you can imagine, stunned parents. >> i'm a mother and, yes, it really bothers me a lot. >> just for someone to walk in like that and do something like that is frightening. >> now, the school did send home a letter to families this week. at least kind of detailing the incident and also talking about the policy for coming on campus because, apparently, she didn't check in at the office, which is what you're required to do. another twist to this deputies told us earlier they haven't established a link to show us that the bullying happened. there are questions over whether she may have actually confronted the wrong boy. of course, we're expecting to learn more. she appears in court this morning at 8:30. reporting live in santa rosa, christie smith, "today in the bay." >> thanks so much, christie. the cal football player

accused of attacking a man near the berkeley campus will be back in court this morning to hear evidence against him. drew pleaded not guilty to assault charges stemming from an alleged beating earlier this month. berkeley police say drew punched another student after the other student's dog reportedly bit drew and drew kicked the dog. drew had been indefinitely suspended from cal's football program. aldon smith will have to wait until the end of july to find out how much time he'll be in jail. yesterday the 24-year-old pledded no contest to three felony weapons charges and one misdemeanor drunk driving charge. the no contest plea means smith did not technically admit guilt, but the judge proceeds as if he is guilty as charged. he could spend a little bit more than four years in jail. it's 5:36. exterminators will spend several hours spraying parts of the south bay tonight in hopes of getting rid of mosquitos carrying the deadly west nile

virus. plan insected is near the san jos jose/campbell border. it is toxic to mosquitos but not toxic to people. the earliest they have ever found them in santa clara county. a reminder to clear out all the standing water and what not in backyards. let's check in with christina loren and any standing water or falling water coming our way? >> little drizzle over the golden gate bridge. socked in with fog and we'll continue to see that fog settle in as we head throughout the next couple hours. scott, laura, everybody, we have a gorgeous weekend coming your way. everything that you want to do when you normally associate the unofficial kickoff of summer. all your outdoor water sports, everything is going to be absolutely feasible as we get into this weekend with temperatures just about right. at the city by the bay, we're talking about san francisco, up to 71 degrees on memorial day. so, it's going to be nice, just about everywhere.

orders are in effect in arizona this morning as firefighters try to gain control of a massive fire. so far, seven square miles have burned near sedona, that's about the size of daly city. miguel is live in sedona. will the weather help or hurt that firefight today? >> laura, we're expecting the weather to change and help firefighters later on today but yesterday it was a hindrance. those erratic winds that fanned flames out of control. this fire doubled and tripled in size over the last few days. crews from all across this region and getting ready to go into the burn zone where they will face the slide fire. the is threatening the slide national state park, a beautiful area in this region. some 300 homes are in the threat or face threat from this fire, but some 3,000 home owners have been told they may need to evacuate at a moment's notice.

the conditions here are certainly positive and the crews that are walking behind me are headed towards fire camp right now and be on the front lines all day long. again, as you mentioned, it is the weather that is the big concern here today. if those erratic winds kick up, it is certainly going to be a tough day on the front lines, laura. >> miguel, do you know about the recreational area like the little city of sedona. do they have to evacuate, as well? >> the area of sedona is safe and people have asked people in that general vicinity to evacuate at a moment's notice. the slide state national park that area is also safe though billowing smoke has been seen all around this area and air quality is poor in certainly manyiaryias outside of the burn zone. >> thanks so much, miguel. we are learning new details about the accused boston marathon last few moments of freedom. documents released overnight by the u.s. attorney's office detailed what dzhokahar tsarnaev

this is a pretty amazing story. south bay mother being honored for her heroic acts. she delivered a baby from a dying mother in texas. iria wolnick was driving with her family when she saw an suv roll over. a mother, father, toddler were thrown from the car. she spotted a laceration and saw the baby was already coming out and she quickly reacted. >> you do what you can with what
